Long Road

Edward was seriously starting to get hungry and thirsty, although he wouldn’t die because of it, the constant hunger attack and dry throat were beginning to take a toll on him mentally. He couldn’t even recount how many days he had been walking on the road.

He had been attacked multiple times by bandits and thieves but all of them were deep underground at this point. If they were normal humans then there was no way they would be able to beat him.

His Heart Full of Pride was a serious cheat. Not only did it heal him from injuries but it was also the thing preventing him from dying of thirst and hunger.

Edward seriously lamented his bad luck. He had hoped he would eventually meet some merchants on the road and borrow their horses, food, and water. Unfortunately, he hasn’t met a single one yet.

He had a guess why already. The roads between the three kingdoms were outrageously long not only that there were countless difficulties along the way. These merchants would have to hire guards and other protectors.

The cost clearly didn’t outweigh the benefit. Only merchants who were selling expensive goods between the kingdoms and had confidence in their strength would take the roads.

As Edward walked under the scorching heat, he wondered if his eyes were deceiving him. He saw a farm girl working on the farm. He rubbed his eyes a few times to see if it was a mirage and the results proved not.

In excitement, he sprinted towards her.

As the girl was plowing the fields, a gust of wind blew towards her. She held the plow in her hand tightly. She was a serf and if she lost the tool, she could only imagine the punishment that would be dealt.

Releasing her grip she noticed a figure looming over her. He was so handsome and beautiful but his eyes shined with insanity.

“Farm girl, do you know where we are?”

The girl stared at Edward and blushed. He was the most handsome figure she had ever seen before.

“We’re at Turnip Town my lord.”

“Does your town have a mayor or something like that?”

“I’m sorry sir, but I don’t know what the word mayor means.”

Hearing her words, Edward seriously lamented the lack of education among the common people.

“Just someone who has a lot of power in this town.”

“Oh, you must be talking about Vettel, he’s in the center of the town, his house is the biggest in the town.”

“Thank you, my lady.”

Clasping her shoulders Edward swiftly departed. Although he felt bad about her situation, he had more pressing things to do. He wasn’t a saint nor would he try to be one, if he worried about everyone’s suffering then when would he have time to worry about his.

As he continued looking around the town it didn’t take long for him to find the place the farm girl was talking about. The house was currently surrounded by countless guards and mercenaries, as they were packing goods and weapons inside horse-drawn carriages.

Walking with confidence Edward ignored the guards and mercenaries and walked towards the door of the house.

“Hey pal, you can’t go there, our bosses are-”

A grizzled man stopped Edward in his tracks as he held onto his shoulder and was promptly sent flying. He spewed out blood as an imprint of a fist was indented onto his steel armor. He was punched before he could even finish his sentence.

Seeing the situation the guards and mercenaries became extremely worried and tense, staring at Edward as if he was some sort of beast. They had been in this line of work for a long time, of course, they had heard about these so-called super humans who held immense power and were beyond the understanding of common men.

Edward ignored them and brazenly walked inside the house. 4 men were sitting at a table. All in deep discussion, their conversation was abruptly interrupted by Edward’s shout.

“Who here is Vettel?”

A plump man who was sitting at the table stared at Edward. He had been the lord of this town for a long time and he could tell by intuition that Edward wasn’t an easy person to deal with. Not only had he walked past the countless guards stationed outside, but he didn’t even look injured.

“It’s me, my lord.”

A plump man respectfully walked towards Edward as he bowed respectfully. His bald head reflected the light onto Edward’s eyes when he bowed. Edward could even see his reflection in his head.

“Do you have a horse, water, and some food?”

“Yes my lord, I’ll get you the items as soon as possible.”

The plump man quickly retreated as he told his attendants to get the things as fast as possible. Edward was basically a thug who he didn’t want to mess with. Seeing as how he strictly demanded things, there was no possibility of forming a relationship with him.

While Vettel was trying to get Edward to leave as soon as possible, the other three men were staring at him differently. They saw him as someone who could help them in their journey to the other side of the kingdom.

As Edward waited patiently for his items. One of the men approached him.

“Do you want to travel with us on our journey?”

“Why do I need to travel with you guys?”

“Isn’t there safety in numbers?”

Edward gave him a deadpan look.

The man in blue suits sighed, as he dealt with Edward’s stare.

“We can help you get into the Kingdom of Frost Iron, without having to deal with the inspection of the guards at the entrance, and we’ll pay you with gold coins.”

Seeing how sincere this person was Edward agreed to the arrangement. He only had to act as a bodyguard for them, and they would help deal with trouble he hadn’t even thought about. It was a win-win situation for the two parties.

“Okay let’s shake hands then.”

As Edward reached out his hand the man stared at him in confusion, this was very unfamiliar to him, but seeing how it looked like the strange man agreed, he also reached out his hands.

[The Author’s Privilege has been Activated.]

[Character: Leo Burns]

Titles: None

Biography: He was the son of a rich merchant, who inherited his father’s teaching and craft. The merchant group that his family had owned for decades has faced serious declines. Seeing as how the merchant group would eventually face its end, Leo Burns decided to make a risky deal and team up with two other merchant groups in decline and make a profit by trading with another kingdom.

Personality: Virtuous, clever, and calm.

[System’s Remark: A weak character with a noble personality.]

Reading his biography and personality, Edward was even more assured. A good person wouldn’t do this, instead, they would squander the rest of their family’s wealth and live a life full of debauchery, but seeing how determined they were, he would probably stay true to their agreement.

Reassured, Edward asked the man.

"When do we depart?"

"Soon, we were just talking with Vettel about the road ahead, countless bandit groups are stalking the road."

"You don't have to worry about them, I'll deal with them, we just need to hurry as soon as possible."

Seeing how confident Edward was, Leo just sighed and agreed. He already heard the loud ruckus outside, it also didn't help that the guards and mercenaries they hired were staring at Edward in trepidation.

He had heard a little bit about the noble circle, this was probably one of the super humans who the nobles heavily controlled. But he wasn't in the kingdom so why would he care about the nobles, also a stronger person would just mean more safety on the road.

Informing the other leaders about the agreement, Leo and the two other leaders prepared as the group left the town at noon. Edward was riding on a horse alienated by the others, but he enjoyed this peace.

He liked dealing with smart people, as they could easily read your intentions. As the group marched, Edward, who had been on high alert, had already seen a group of bandits stationed on cliffs that were on the left and right side of the road.

He now knew why the road was very dangerous, with such cliffs, merchant groups only had the option of traveling through the cliffs.

Edward yawned as he prepared for combat.
