Am I Seriously The Only Gamer?!
Chapter 18: Deep Diving

Chapter 18: Deep Diving

“Mother…fucker,” William said, rolling on a hard surface, a mixture of pain and numbness flowing through him.

He let out a low cough, winded from the hard impact he had just received. He mentally saw that his HP was currently at a measly fifty five He groaned for a few moments more before he started to open his eyes. What he saw made his eyes go wide, making him briefly forget the state he was in. Luminescent mushrooms and glowing moss plastered the ground and cavernous walls. It was a truly beautiful sight.

“Finally, a fantasy environment!” he cheered, excited to finally be somewhere alien.

He took in the sights as he got to his feet and turned about taking in everything. His eyes however, were drawn to the corpse of the fell beast he had fought. It spoiled the view, but William then felt that he had prompts waiting. Silver linings and all that. He decided to collect and clean his various weapons still embedded in the beast first. It took a good while for him to collect the array of blades he had used in the fight. The beast had selfishly landed at a bad angle and two of William’s daggers were underneath the hulking mass. After what felt like an eternity of hacking, he had carved a tunnel of meat into the beast until he found the tips of the blades sticking out of the beast’s innards.

William finally collected all of his weapons and after wiping them down, sheathed them. He stepped out from the meat tunnel he made and scanned his surroundings for a way out. He was in a massive cavern, and could see a hole in the ceiling, the part that unnerved him however was the lack of light at the end of it. He was very deep underground it seemed. With a sigh, he finished scanning the shining cave, and saw a large crack in the wall towards the south west of the space. William almost started walking there and then, but seeing that all three of his resource pools were low, he decided that he needed to rest and recuperate first. He was worried about natural predators down in the underground with him, and couldn’t see a truly defensible spot nearby. It was then with reluctance that William decided to copy the actions of a certain sci-fi character on a snowy planet, and climbed inside the beast to take shelter.

William chopped a small chunk of flesh out of the beast’s insides to make a barrier, blocking the entrance. It was mostly effective, leaving a two inch gap at the top for air and to let in some of the bio-luminescent light from the cave. Inside, William grimaced then sat down feeling and hearing a meaty squelch under himself, making him cringe slightly. He had priorities however, and took a meditative pose.

William held the pose for an indeterminate amount of time to his senses until the rest of his resources had replenished. It was also harder to tell how long he spent, due to the lack of sky to mark time. William hurried out of the beast, getting frustrated with the strong meaty smell inside and soggy environment. He took in a breath of somewhat damp cave air, not exactly fresh air, but better than what he had inside the beast. He would however need a thorough wash later, as his clothing and gear was mostly dyed red from his brief shelter. With determination to get back to the outside, he walked towards the possible exit.

William reached the crack without issue and peaked inside the roughly meter wide crack. He saw a rough and rocky passage leading into darkness. No light appeared within, but he had a small source of light fortunately, as he tore one of the larger mushrooms from the ground and wrapped the straps of his old shield around the stem, making the grip firmer and the faux torch easier to wield. He took a final look at the cave and decided to scoop some of the moss and smaller mushrooms up into his pack before continuing on his way.

William decided to consult his prompts as he walked, starting with one he had expected, but was still elated with:

His Mouth was agape at the prompt. He expected one level up across the board, but he had gotten two. Forty attribute points to splurge in addition to the class and race specific points. He made his changes and viewed the total changes afterwards.

The changes made William feel powerful after passing the fifty point stage of Strength and Dexterity. He felt strong, and limber, and he could feel his movements were more elegant and feline. William didn’t let himself get too distracted however as he decided move on to his second prompt:

{Ascension_Protocol}

{New Title Offered: Fell The Mighty}

{Description}

Achieved through the determination to slay denizens of the fell. You walk the path of the saviour, protecting the land from the fell incursions. Let the fell crash against your shield and succumb to your sword.

{Effect}

All EXP gained from Fell-kin is doubled.

All Damage dealt to Fell-kin is doubled.

[Notice – Accepting this Title will make it appear on your identity if the spell Identify is used on you. Description not included.]

Do you accept the title?

{Y/N}

{End}

William stopped moving and re-read the prompt to make sure he understood it clearly. Fell-kin. That must be the type of beast he had fought, and from the term incursions it implied they were world invaders of some kind. Did they have demonic portals or something like in games? He had a feeling something of that ilk was most likely. The world already seemed incredibly gamified as it was so it wouldn’t be too surprising a conclusion.

The effect was significant but slightly underwhelming. William appreciated double any benefit, but would have preferred a stat boosting title in this case as he had no clue when he would encounter another fell-kin. He wasn’t going to decline it however as there wasn’t any downside and accepted it.

William's journey got even more interesting as the surroundings began to smooth out and turn into a stone passageway as he went. Anticipation crept up in him, thinking that this might not be the exit, but instead an entrance. What could the entrance be? William pondered it, maybe an ancient Dwarven city, or other forgotten civilization. Maybe it was an entrance to a populated city, or, maybe, just maybe, it was a dungeon entrance.

William wouldn’t mind it being a populated settlement, as maybe he could learn more about the world and potentially pick up a side quest or two if that was a thing. He however, would prefer it to be an abandoned settlement with treasures, or a dungeon, as that would really sate his gamer taste buds. He got his answer shortly after the thought as he came face to face with a chamber holding a twenty foot high pair of metal doors.

He had a sneaking suspicion that this was a dungeon. And as he got closer he smiled with anticipation and read the prompt that had popped up:

{Ascension_Protocol}

{Dungeon Notice}

You are about to enter [Lost Dungeon of the Arcane Sword].

You are the [1st] to discover this dungeon. Bonus Rewards available for completion.

Once you enter, you may only win, or die.

Enter dungeon?

{Y/N}

{End}

William paused at the prompt. He considered whether to enter or not, knowing its a sink or swim situation if he did, but then again, he had no other possible exit, so he had no real choice. At least if he died, he wouldn’t have to worry about anything any more. He appreciated the potential silver lining of the prompt however as higher rewards were always good. He also had high hopes that clearing it may give him a title or two if he beat it, being the first to discover and do so. With a firm determination at the thought, he drew his sword, and accepted the prompt.

The colossal doors slowly opened inward and he stepped through. As he passed the threshold, he felt the vibrations of stone grinding as the doors closed behind him and darkness surrounded him. He could only see five feet around himself as the darkness seemed to fight the glowing light of the mushroom for dominance. This only lasted for a few moments as torches of blue flame lit up one by one, illuminating a large chamber with three doors. The door directly north was golden and had an emblem engraved in the center comprised of three swords crossed over each other like a star. He then glanced to the westward door next and saw a bronze door with one sword in a vertical position engraved upon it. Finally, the eastward door had two swords crossed over each other on it.

William had a feeling they were different difficulties, which raised some concerns. There was a chance that if he did the easiest one, that the dungeon would award him the lowest reward and punt him out. He had no way to validate if he could repeat a dungeon, but he had a feeling that he couldn’t. However, if he could do all three, then it would be a phenomenal gain of treasures. He could also go from easiest to hardest and hopefully level more through the process. He was close to level ten Fighter and cashing in the milestone bonus would enhance his efficacy in the dungeon. The pros outweighed, the cons and he decided to risk it for the proverbial chocolate biscuit.

William walked up to the door and pushed on it, opening the door inward. Inside, he saw a plinth protruding several feet opposite to the door and a ten meter by ten meter square chamber beyond. The floor was smooth and marbled tile. A line of chalk created a square arena of sorts and as he returned his focus to the plinth he saw that a stone square like a pressure pad of sorts was on top of it. He had a feeling that he knew what this trial was going to entail then. He spent several minutes summoning his resolve and approached the plinth. He pushed his hand down on the pressure pad. It took some force, but he pressed it down all the way.

The sound of cogs turning beyond the walls created slight vibrations and this forced a small gap to form in the ceiling above the arena. Out from it fell a spectral figure with a longsword sheathed at its side.

“Greetings, disciple. Please step into the arena. Your training begins now,” The figure said in a haunting low voice.

William did so, and as he walked towards the duel to come, he said, “Hello, I’m William, and you are?”

He hoped that he could ready himself slightly before fighting so a brief respite of talk would be a boon for him. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t meant to be as the figure just watched him walk, eerily inanimate. As William stepped into the arena taking position opposite his opponent, he saw a prompt appear:

{Ascension_Protocol}

{Dungeon Trial}

{Goal}

Ring out, Incapacitate, or kill Spectral Swordsman – Level 12

{End}

As he closed the prompt, the swordsman drew his blade and took a two handed offensive stance. William levelled his sword at his foe in a one handed manner, keeping a hand free for his daggers if needed. The two stared at each other briefly before the swordsman dashed at William and the duel began.
