Chapter 20: Magic, Skill and The Church

It’s been few days now, since Kai had come to the mansion. He started to get used to his new life there, getting to know the workers in there, reading different books, eating together with his newfound family. But on one day, Kai found himself being helped into a noble attire, a sigh escaping his lips. He was not used to being dressed, preferring to wear on his own. “I said I can do it myself,” he thought to himself, a hint of frustration in his voice. As he was being dressed, his mind wandered back to the breakfast table.

Earlier that day, Hiro, Sakura, Elysia, and himself had gathered around the breakfast table in the dining room. They were enjoying their breakfast with laughter, when Hiro spoke up. “Oh right! Isn’t today the day?” he asked, a knowing smile on his face.

Kai and Elysia exchanged confused glances. “What do you mean?” Sakura asked, her fork paused mid-air. Hiro’s smile widened. “Weren’t we going to check Eli’s unique skill today at the church?”

Sakura’s eyes widened in realization. “Ah, right!” she exclaimed, setting her fork down. “With all the happenings in the past few days, I completely forgot about it.” Elysia’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “So today I will get my skill?!” she asked, barely able to contain her excitement.

Hiro patted her head affectionately. “Right. Today you will get your skill and learn how to use it,” he confirmed, his smile never wavering. Kai watched the exchange, a thoughtful expression on his face. “Magic is an everyday part of life here, but some people here were able to possess unique skills. These skills depended on the type of magic they use or what they are best at. However, only a few people were able to obtain them, and they were very rare among commoners. Even among nobles, not everyone had such luck.”

Elysia’s voice brought him out of his thoughts. “I want to get a powerful skill just like dad!” she declared, her eyes shining with determination. Sakura reached out to ruffle her hair. “You can do it! Mommy is sure of it,” she reassured her, a warm smile on her face.

Elysia then turned to look at Kai, who smiled at her with a nod when, “But what about brother?” she asked, her gaze innocent and curious. “Can brother check his skill with me too?” Hiro chuckled. “Right! We didn’t check your brother’s skill since he was away back then.”

Kai sighed inwardly. “Normally, they checked these skills when kids turn 6 years old. Since it was very rare in commoners, the church didn’t bother to check in them. Also, if I am correct…” He looked at Sakura conversing with Elysia. “She didn’t have any unique skill, but he did.” He then looked at Hiro, "War cry" when Elysia’s voice interrupted his thoughts again, “Then will brother check his skill with me!?” she asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Sakura beamed at her. “Right! Hiro, let’s do that,” she agreed, looking at Hiro first, then at Kai. “Let’s check both of your skills.” Hiro stood up, his decision final. “Then it’s decided. After breakfast, we are heading straight to the church.”

Kai could only sigh. “No one wants to ask for my opinion, eh?” he thought to himself.

Back in the present, he finished dressing up, ready to face whatever the day had in store for him. Just before he was about to head out of his room, he paused. “Ah… wait. Maybe I will do this.”

Outside by the mansion, Hiro stood there along with Sakura by the carriage, when Elysia came running to them. “Eli? Your alone?” Sakura asked. Hiro added to it, “Where’s Kai?” to which she replied, “Brother asked me to go ahead. He said he will be here after me.” Sakura looked at Hiro in confusion. Just then, the main door opened, when the three of them looked towards it. They saw Kai’s wheelchair, “Ah, there you-” Hiro, as he spoke was stunned. All three of them were shocked upon looking towards him. The sight of Kai, dressed in noble attire, was a sight to behold. But there was something that was more shocking.
