Act 2: Beginning of a Journey; chapter 9: Waking Up part 3

Realizing the predicament of the old man, Lumawig tried to help, but he found out that he cannot escape the cave-like structure he was currently in. An invisible barrier is preventing him from going out and helping the old man. He tried to punch the invisible barrier, but there was not even the slightest reaction. He also tried ramming his body against the invisible barrier, achieving the same result as his earlier action.

Just as he was getting desperate, the scene in front of him shifted again. This time, the old man is no longer fighting against the multitude of the black, fog-like beings. However, he is now facing something more sinister – a being whose whole body is like smoke and faces that shows malice made up of its whole body. Lumawig also noticed that the creature does not have any facial features except for a single mouth that is full of sharp teeth.

Lumawig is nothing but a spectator in this dream, however, the terror he felt when he saw the creature facing off against the old man, made his very soul shiver as if it was dropped in a bucket full of ice. It was at this point that Lumawig realized something. He does not know the old man, nor the creature he was fighting. He does not even know why he is having this dream, but he could feel that he is somehow connected to these events.

While Lumawig was in a stupefied state, the old man and the creature started fighting. When Lumawig saw the scene of the two of them fighting, he was dumbfounded, as it is more accurate to call it a one-sided beat down. The moment he snapped out of his stupefied state, he saw that one of the old man’s arms was torn from his body. However, even with such a grievous wound, the old man seemed to only get stronger as he slashed his weapon multiple times in a few seconds against the creature. Nevertheless, no damage was done against the creature.

Then the scene shifted again, this time, the old man was standing in front of the entrance of the cave-like structure Lumawig was in, and the creature that the old man was fighting has somehow grown six additional arms and is relentlessly stabbing the old man’s body. From Lumawig’s side, he can see that the old man has now become weak but is unable to tell how it happened. Then Lumawig saw that the creature was “looking” at him despite having no eyes and it flashed a horrifying smile at him; next, Lumawig saw the old man looking back at him, even though his face was blurry, Lumawig was certain that the old man also flashed a kind and warm smile to him. Lumawig then heard the old man say:

“Mawi, I hope that one day you become a splendid babaylan!”

Just as he was about to rush forward, everything around him disappeared and only darkness remained. Lumawig was even certain that he was no longer standing on solid ground for he could not feel them under his feet. It was so dark that Lumawig could not even see his own hands, and somehow he knew that there was no difference if he closed his eyes or not.

Suddenly Lumawig felt that a sinister energy was enveloping him, causing him great fear. He does not know what was causing it, but he feels terrified. Then a heavy pressure fell on him. Even though he was not standing on solid ground, he could feel his body being flattened by the heavy pressure. He tried to shout, out of fear and despair, but no voice came out. He also tried to struggle to no avail. Just when he was about to be crushed by that heavy pressure, a warm feeling suddenly erupted from his chest. A golden glow started to envelop him and the heavy pressure that was pushing down on his body started to become lighter. The terror he also felt earlier disappeared, and only a warm and comfortable feeling remained.

Suddenly tears started to fall from both of his eyes, however he has no idea why, he only has a feeling that he lost something…or someone important to him. His chest, rather his heart felt painful, like a knife is being stabbed into it, but he does not know why. At this moment, in his dream, Lumawig is confused why he is feeling this way.

At the same time that Lumawig was experiencing various events inside his dream, Lola Yma, who was already awake, was standing beside the makeshift bed where Lumawig was lying down. Seeing Lumawig’s expressions, Lola Yma sighed in relief.
