Act 1: The Gift; chapter 30: Decisive Battle part 1

It was already close to midnight when Lolo Gani opened his eyes, his recovery process was complete. While he was able to fully restore his stamina, his other injuries would require more time to heal, especially the hole in his thigh that was left by the giant bal-bal’s claw. The moment he opened his eyes, Lolo Gani immediately felt shivers run down his spine. Although there were only those zombie-like humans standing outside the barrier, Lolo Gani felt like a bloodthirsty animal was looking straight at him.

A short time later, rustling sounds could be heard from the direction he and Lumawig came from, and a figure came out from the woods. The figure that came out was a shadowy figure whose whole body seems to be composed of ferocious looking faces. This creature does not have eyes and nose, there is only a mouth that is full of sharp teeth and looks like it is salivating constantly. War cries and howls of sadness and anguish could be heard from the many faces of making up the body of this creature. It was precisely Busau who came out of the forest. The moment Busau came out, Lolo Gani felt a pressure so heavy that he almost fell flat on the ground. After Busau came out, the monsters and creatures it brought also came out from the forest in large numbers.

Seeing the direction which Busau came out from, realization dawned on Lolo Gani as he went pale in fright. His body started shaking visiby, and anger and hatred could be seen in his eyes. He need not be there to know, but he could tell that everyone from Dumadalig is dead. He wanted to charge out of the barrier and kill all these monsters, but he stopped himself from doing so. For he knew that it would be certain death the moment he came out of the barrier.

Busau did not attack Lolo Gani immediately, instead, it looked at the group of humans that had been standing near the barrier and charged towards them. In just a blink of an eye Busau reached the middle of the group and started slaughtering them. All the faces that covered its shadowy body opened their mouths and started sucking the blood spilled by Busau. Whenever he gets a hold of one of its controlled humans, a chewing sound could be heard as the face that is on its hands would start eating the human. Of course, Busau itself would also take a huge bite out of every human he touches.

The scene was too gruesome even for Lolo Gani. What made it more gut-wrenching is the fact that these humans made no painful screams while being killed or eaten by Busau. Instead, a look of fanaticism could be seen on their faces. Brains, hearts, entrails, all were eaten by Busau, and for every human it consumes, the deity of destruction gets more powerful.

Lolo Gani was aghast at the sight, and he could not help but have his stomach churn at the scene unfolding in front of him. It was one thing for him to see a dead body, but it is a whole different thing seeing a person get eaten alive but still have an expression of bliss. He noticed that for every human the creature killed, the pressure he felt from it got stronger and heavier.

“Is that the one who controlled all those humans and the group of bal-bal? It is eating those humans to get more powerful!” Lolo Gani then realized what Busau was doing.

“I must stop him! Forget about defeating him, once he kills all those humans, even escaping with my life will be impossible!” the old man thought to himself

Lolo Gani slowly stood up, and collected all the bamboo spears he had, his trusty sundang already on his waist and on his right hand the buntot pagi. He then closed his eyes, inhaled deeply, and started chanting. As soon as he started chanting, a gentle white light started to cover his body, and the agimat that was dangling on his neck emitted the same white light. However, this was not all, another chant was heard, and a dark green glow also started to show on his body – this glow was a buff from invoking his abyan. After his chant ended, Lolo Gani picked up one of the bamboo spears and hurled it toward Busau who is now consuming its thirtieth victim.

Stolen story; please report.

The speed and power of this throw is like that of a cannon ball. A loud whistling sound was heard as the bamboo spear tore through the air towards its target. However, Busau noticed the incoming attack and grunted, in no time some thirty monsters jumped in the bamboo spear’s trajectory, shielding Busau from the weapon. The first monster it hit, a kapre had its whole torso vanish, which caused it to die immediately. The force on the spear, however, did not dissipate and continued to the second monster standing in its way. It was an aswang called a wak-wak, that has large bat-like wings on its back, an elongated tongue with a mouth full of sharp teeth, arms twice the length of a normal human’s and claws for hands. The spear also punched a huge whole on its chest the moment it came into contact with the monster. This continued up to the thirtieth monster, and the bamboo spear lost all momentum; additionally, the once green color of the bamboo spear has now become brown, and became brittle, signifying that it lost its usefulness.

Seeing that his attack was blocked, Lolo Gani was a little disappointed. However, he did not waver and launched another attack towards Busau. In reaction to the second attack, Busau became irritated for having its meal disturbed and it released a roar of fury towards the sky. The moment it roared, all of the monsters it brought with him all charged towards the barrier. Multiple ancient Filipino scripts that spelled ‘shield’ appeared when the large group of monsters collided against the barrier.

Some were killed instantly on impact, while some were grievously injured. However, those that were injured did not retreat to tend to their wounds. Instead, they started attacking immediately again. They seem to be in a state of madness, and only know how to attack or charge against the barrier. The onslaught of these creatures continued, with almost no end in sight. Lolo Gani on the other hand knew that the barrier can only stop them for a few more breaths before it directly collapses. So, in order to inflict more damage to the enemy's number, aside from throwing his bamboo spears towards Busau, he would also throw them towards the great flood of these mad monsters.

After ten more breaths, the barrier that had already been damaged in the earlier fight collapsed, and a sound of glass breaking was heard. The moment Lolo Gani heard it, his eyes narrowed, and his face turned a shade paler. With the collapse of the barrier, his first line of defense has been effectively disabled and he will now face this horde of monsters alone.

Lolo Gani, however, could not stay shocked for too long as Busau is now consuming its sixtieth victim, and has grown stronger than before. Retreating nearer the entrance of the cavity, and with only six bamboo spears left, Lolo Gani reached out for the opened bottle that released a pleasant aroma earlier. He then tossed it up in the air and struck it with one of the bamboo spears he was holding. The moment he broke the bottle, a thick white fog immediately covered the whole clearing and even extended some ten meters into the forest, and a pleasant aroma suffused in the surrounding.

The whole area became white and the monsters that were caught inside the fog started to combust. It seems that this concoction was harmful against evil spirits like them, and now that a majority of them was covered in it, the damage that was done on them was massive. Some of the weaker monsters immediately caught on fire, and no matter what they did, the fire cannot be put out. Even Busau who was happily munching on a human felt some pain inflicted on its skin.

The fog also covered the monsters' eyes, and their sharp sense of smell were useless as Lolo Gani’s scent was being hidden by the pleasant aroma. The battlefield immediately fell into confusion and just attacked randomly, adding to the fact that some of them would catch fire. Taking advantage of the confusion, Lolo Gani immediately went to work. He too is not able to see clearly in this white fog, however, this did not hinder him in killing the monsters.

Before he attacked, right after he broke the bottle, Lolo Gani chanted for a short time, and the dark green glow on his body became stronger and stronger, then a small mouse-like deer came out from his glabella. This mousedeer is Lolo Gani’s abyan, is no bigger than a rat and it has translucent appearance, with a dominantly black fur covering its body with brown strips of fur on its face, three narrow white stripes of fur on its throat and neck; all its four feet, however, are covered in brown fur. The most striking feature of the spirit is the sun mark on its back with the blades of kris for its rays – a total of eight rays.
