Chapter 25.6: The End Of The Beginning

Cole can’t help but ponder, More Blood Hunters… Are they special? What could they be?

Cole’s thoughts are interrupted by sounds knocking on glass. They look to discover Lucky floating in a cylinder with a breathing mask over his face. He’s furiously kicking the glass trying to get free. Blazer jumps to action by activating his strings. He swings with great precision breaking the glass. Lucky splashes onto the ground gasping, “Thank you! I was running out of air! The machine was turned off!”

Lucky points further down the row at ten more Ultrasapiens contained in cylinders, “Help the others!”

Those with powers allowing them to break the glass run to their aid. Blazer uses his glowing strings, Cinder ignites into flames melting the glass, and Cole breaks them with wind blades. Ten freed Ultrasapiens splash to the floor coughing and dazed.

It looks like they have all survived. Cole thinks to himself.

Cole questions Lucky, “Are you ok?!”

“I feel different, no, I feel great! Like my luck has been changing!”

“What do you mean?”

“Once Death started to fight I could feel a pull on my energy. He kept pulling, and you know what? I think he got greedy. I think he sucked up a dose of my bad luck!”

“That’s very possible. Do you remember what happened here?”

“The hunters got me! They dragged us into the bunker. Then the next thing I knew I woke up in that, thing. Then you guys broke me out. You guys might not believe me, but I’m positive my luck brought you guys here. I mean I was running out of air! What was that cylinder anyway? What were they going to do to us?”

Em moves over examining the machines, speaking, “Of course I can’t be sure until I do more tests, but I think one of the purposes of the cylinders is to siphon your Ultra energy from you. Not to mention keeping you in a dormant state while you were experimented on.”

Lucky jumps excitedly, “You’re saying they were taking my luck energy? Ha! No wonder I’m feeling so good. I’m so lucky you guys rescued me! Don’t you see? Don’t you know what this means?!”

Cole replies with a raised eyebrow and a slight expression of losing patience, “That you’re lucky to be alive?”

“They sucked up my bad luck! My luck has been reset! Tell me, what happened outside? Are we safe? The last thing I saw was a black creature crashing through everything with waves of water.”

Arch pulls on his goatee, “I think we’re safe. Well, I suppose I’ll count this one as a win. Though, I don’t know how we can say we won with such casualties. Given the circumstances I think we did pretty well. Cain, is who knows where, the demon is still alive but we can’t explain how or why. Shado is stuck, probably in hell, and it sounds like now there’s more Blood Hunters out roaming somewhere. Don’t even get me started on that. Not to mention Byson is stuck in a stalemate with an infinitely powerful Ultra Blood Hunter for who knows how long just outside.”

“Demon? Ultra Blood Hunter? I literally have no idea what you’re talking about. Let me ask this way. What will I find when I step outside?”

Cole replies with a bit of a sigh remembering everything just before speaking, “You’re going to find the forest is gone, everything is covered in blood, a mountain is missing, and Death is dead. But I don’t think anything will try to kill you if that’s what you mean.”

“Ah ha! See! We are alive because of my luck!”
