Chapter 25.5: The End Of The Beginning

Em follows the smeared blood questioning, “Hmm, you say you went this way and it was a dead end? Look at where this blood goes. There’s a false wall here. One sec.”

Em walks up to a section of the wall examining it. He presses his hand against it. A computer terminal ejects from the wall. He joyfully rambles on while typing, “Well would you look at this! I designed this system. I thought only the military had my designs. I had no idea they were giving my tech to other bunkers. I mean look at this they didn’t even try to use their own code. They just did a copy paste, the idiots. I always leave a backdoor in all of my systems. One moment ooone moment.”

Em jabs the enter key causing the wall in front of them to rise up. What they find inside is a boundless chamber. It’s dark, not allowing you to see the ceiling or walls except for hundreds of green glowing cylinders. Most of them are empty except for some of the earliest failed versions of the Blood Hunter experiments. Em cries out making everyone put their hand to their forehead, “Oh! Look at this technology!”

Brody asks again, “No really what’s wrong with you.”

“This lab is beautiful! Look! Look at this! This appears to be some sort of energy conversion modifier. And these! These cylinders must be used for storage of Ultra energy. Amazing how he’s using the fluid as some sort of biological battery conductor. Just fascinating really. Then look at all the rows! This lab must have been so much fun to build.”

“Well I’m pretty sure you can do whatever you want with it now.” says Cole snidely.

Arch calls to the group, “Hey guys… I think I found the source of the blood.” He points to the trail of blood leading up to a human figure collapsed by a large terminal. The man is clutching his chest with blood bleeding profusely through his white coat.

Cole questions him, “Who are you?”

“Bah! It doesn’t matter anymore.”

“Fine then. I’m ordering you to answer my questions. Who are you and what are you doing here?”

The man's face winces with the command. He finds the answers are ripped unwillingly from his mind, “They call me Doc. I’m the creator of this lab, of the Blood Hunters. What am I doing here? I’m dying, isn’t it obvious?”

Cole bites back harshly, “You know what I meant. What happened here?”

“It seems Death was not pleased with me. He wanted more crystals. I told him I didn’t have time to fill the rest. He obviously didn't like my answer. He thought he did me in. What did he expect he released all of my children, the fool… Well, not all of them.”

“There’s more? Where are they?!”

“Yes there’s more. I had to hide them, even from Death. They were too important for the future. You’re too late, you won’t find them here. I’ve already released my son along with the others.”

“Tell me how to stop them?!”

“Heh, there’s no stopping them. I released them from the controls of their programming. They are writing their own purpose now. Even I don’t know what they will become. They are truly free.”

Cole points to Justice, “Hurry! If you do a reading on him we can learn what he knows!”

Doc smiles with just enough energy for a broken chuckle before his life fades from his eyes. Justice takes his hand, “I can’t, he’s already gone.”
