The Press Conference

The Press Conference

After my father was taken away Will stopped coming to class and I was left alone unable to do anything except watch. The feeling in the pit of my stomach had turned into despair as I watched the press conference being broadcast on television.

There he was, the cause of this feeling, the Prime Minister of Mars in all his bald, overweight glory. The suit he wore looked as if it were hanging on for dear life. I watched as he sat at the long conference table with the President of the United States along with the respective leaders of Jupiter and Saturn as they discussed several things before, they reached the main topic of the day, the distribution of metal.

“Gentlemen I will now push forward the primary reason that this meeting was called.” The Prime Minister of Mars started as he sat erect in his chair and placed his hands on the table.

“I firmly believe that there should be a 40-60 split on the distribution of metal resources between Mars and Earth in favor of Mars. Given that Earth already has an overabundance of metal without the need for having to acquire more.” He continued.

“Nonsense! Earth relies heavily on metal. It would be foolish of us to reduce the quantity by forty percent.” The president responds.

“What are you using all that metal for exactly? Could it be that the rumors were true about Earth wanting to remove itself from the union by any means?” The Prime Minister of Mars responded as he tried to hold back his grin.

I could tell by the several minutes it took for him to answer, the President wanted to keep his plans a secret at all costs. Meanwhile the harder the Prime Minister of Mars tried to hold back his grin the more you could tell he felt as if he had checkmated Earth.

“With the peace and order that we, the Union of the Solar System uphold we cannot afford for a war to break out between us. Wouldn’t you agree gentlemen?” The Prime Minister of Mars asked those in the room to which they all nodded their heads in agreement.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

“Therefore, I suggest that the metal supply be cut entirely from Earth’s supply chain. If they will not agree to the 40-60 split between Mars and Earth. “The Prime Minister of Mars concluded. With Earth cornered it seemed as if Mars was about to be declared the winner. Until the leader of Jupiter decided to come to Earth’s aid.

“I do agree that it is…odd that Earth is determined to monopolize all of the metal resources with its checkered past involving widespread gun violence.” The leader of Jupiter said as he shuffled the papers placed in front of him.

“So you agree with me!” Mars’ Prime Minister interrupted.

“However, Mars’ motive for wanting to manufacture more metal is equally as questionable. Jupiter’s leader continued.

“Exactly, so what do you want to use the metal for?” The President of the United States asked the Prime Minister of Mars while he narrowly escaped death.

“I’m requesting additional metal resources to further increase our infrastructure. Lest we run the risk of having our buildings topple over as they have on Jupiter.” The Prime Minister of Mars retorted.

“Your motive doesn’t make any sense I’m afraid, Prime Minister.” Jupiter’s leader retorted.

“You say that you are requesting additional metal to further increase your infrastructure, but I couldn’t help but notice the increased amount of security you brought with you. Also, since you wish to bring rumors into the conversation, what were the rumors about Mars researching a new type of Aegis?” Jupiter’s leader continued, to Mars's Prime Minister’s dismay.

“Are we sure we should be sharing classified information while we’re broadcasting to the universe?” Mars’ Prime Minister retorted in an attempt to get the heat off of him.

“Fair enough.” Jupiter’s leader conceded.

“Therefore, I suggest that we continue this conversation at a later date, behind closed doors.” Jupiter’s leader suggested.

“No, we will decide this now.” The Prime Minister of Mars demanded.

“What are you in such a hurry for?” The President of the United States asked to provoke the Prime Minister.

“I don’t owe any of you answers anymore.” The Prime Minister of Mars coldly responded as several gunshots were heard being fired from outside of the conference room, then soon after the broadcast was cut.
