Volume 1- Chapter 2: A test of strength!

I was still looking everywhere when a cart bumped me that I almost fell down the stairs which lead to the Statue of Freya sculpture that was behind me.

“Hey watch it you! My merchandise almost got thrown off! Damn noobs standing around everywhere when we merchants need to work!” Said a merchant with a cart filled with loot while he passed me by with an aggressive look in his eyes.

“Damn I need to get away from this crowd and check my stats and test things out.”

I tried flexing my arms and did a few lunges before walking to a corner behind the Statue of Freya to check what items and skills I had.

“This place seems quite enough for a bustling city, now let me see… Status Window!”

“Woah, the organization wasn’t joking around when they said they want this done! So much benefits from the capsule and the account. Hopefully this doesn’t make stuff too easy.”

I was overwhelmed with the additional effects of being the first of this race. I bet the base stats are based on my physical performance from the electronic impulse given by the capsule, I don’t know where they got that much intelligence and wisdom from though, maybe from the Elf race seeing as I’m not the brightest kid in the block, heh.

“Let’s see what skills I got from this race, Skill Window!”

"OMG" My eyes were bursting out there sockets seeing as how the given skills are very useful for the long run, especially the Blood Elf skill.

"This is something that would let me catch up to the guys on top!" I cheered for the fortunate events that happened when I just started. People were looking at me like I was some kind of creep but I didn’t care, soon they will all know the name Gilgamesh!

After closing the skills window I looked at what was inside my inventory and found that I only had a canister for water, 10 Barley Breads and an unidentified dagger. The dagger was emitting a faint red glow almost transparent to the eye, it had several Elvish markings and had a Ruby at its core. Curious I went and asked the people near me where I could get the dagger to be identified.

“Eh? Where to get items identified? Go to the Wizards Guild and try your luck kid.” Said a guy wearing heavy plated armor that I asked.

Well I guess I better go look for the wizards guild.

I spent 2 hours roaming the west side of the town of Morata and saw a tall building with people wearing robes moving inside and out. I hurriedly went inside and inquired about identifying my dagger.

When I went inside I saw a few players reading and practicing magic a few tables away. There was an old lady near the entrance of the guild so I asked her about my predicament.

“Well take the stairs up the first floor and go in the first room you see, there will be someone who could help you there lad.” She said and smiled. I thank her for her help and went upstairs and went inside the first room I saw. There was a girl behind the counter who was polishing a few items and was looking at me with shrewd eyes.

“Good day my dear lady, could you please help me identify this dagger?” I asked here and took out the dagger and showed it to her.

“Well this is the basic identification section, it only costs a few copper to identify your dagger.” She said as she was eying the dagger in my hand.

“Hm, as I have no money at the moment I shall come back when I have the money needed.” I said with a dejected face.

Sigh, a few hours wasted for nothing. I’m glad I had inner stamina boost so I don’t need to waste my bread.

“Well, if you need a bit of cash go to the blacksmith shop a few blocks from here and ask for Bartholomew, tell him Lilith sent you for work.” She said with a smile, sighing as it was another traveler without cash.

“Thank you Lilith, you will not regret this!” I went down and exited the guild and looked for the Blacksmith Shop, I was hungry so I took a piece of bread and ate it as I walk. People seemingly gave way when I pass by, some girls were trying to get my contact number and some were trying to recruit me in a guild.

Guess they don’t see much of an elf here in the north huh.

I saw the smokes of the forge before I even got to the blacksmith’s shop, I went inside and asked for Bartholomew, the receptionist went to the back and called Bartholomew.

Bartholomew was a mountain of a man, easily topping my height by 5 inches, with arms coiled like steel ropes he bellowed and ask what did a kid like me want from him.

“Sir, Lilith sent me here and asked if you have a need for more hands in your shop. I kind of need a few coppers to identify my dagger at the guild.” I sheepishly told him my story while keeping my head down avoiding eye contact.

this guy can kill me with a punch

“Well I do need a few strong pair of arms in the bellows, you’re welcome to work here for a few coppers an hour, come on back here and I’ll show you how to hold a hammer.” He was gesturing his hand saying lets go to the back.

Triing!

Quest: Bartholomew’s Forge

Bartholomew needs a hand in his blacksmith shop. He asked you if you could work for him for a couple of hours a day.

Rank: E

Reward: 25 Coppers/Hour Additional rewards are given depending on performance

Quest Requirement: Must be endorsed by Lilith, must need a few coppers.

“Sure, I’ll help out for a while.” Smiling as I received my first quest. This is going to be a piece of cake!

I went to the back with him and saw tons of armor and swords scattered on the ground, it was hot in the forge so I took a step back and he noticed my reaction.

“First time in the forge eh? Take that apron and hammer behind you and come nearer; I’ll teach you how to repair some items first before anything else.” He pointed at the items behind me and he went back to the forging hammering on a sword.

I took both items and tied the apron while walking towards Bartholomew, I could feel the heat radiating from the forge and got a system message:

Gained Fire Resistance 1%

Hm maybe working in the forge for a bit to get a boost in my resistance aint bad

“Bartholomew, where should I start?” As I was just behind him watching him taking the sword back into the fires.

“Take that shabby sword on the right and put it on top of the anvil and let’s get you started on repairing, by the way what’s your name kid?”

“It’s Gilgamesh sir.” I took the sword and set it up the anvil and readied my hammer.

“Hmm, since you have strong arms try to focus on hitting the parts that look like it’s about to crack, pour some iron that I had in stock and cool it a few times to get a decent sheen on the sword.” He then took his hammer and demonstrated how it was going to be done, he heated the sword on the flames first and hammered it when it was of orange hue, he then dipped it in water producing steam. He then took it out and reheated it and laid it back to its place.

“Go ahead and try it, take your time till you feel it’s repaired enough.” He said that as he went back to his work.

This will take a while, let’s try it nice and slow then.

I began to work sincerely and hammered away concentrating on how to make the sword better. I spend about 2 hours constantly hammering, heating and cooling the sword till I heard a sound.

Wow, I learnt the repair skill by doing it on the first try.

“Bartholomew, it’s done! Come see!” I was happy for repairing the sword that I painstakingly worked on for 2 hours.

“Hmm that is good work, you have a knack for this, since you have already learnt repair, how about I teach you proper blacksmithing eh?” He said this with a wide grin on his face, I couldn’t help but agreeing to what he proposed so I said yes.

“Well let’s test you with sharpening swords and maybe after you get an intermediate in sharpening you can make a basic sword.” He took me to the grindstone and taught me how to sharpen different kinds of weapons and swords and after a few hours of sharpening I finally heard the melodious ringing of a new skill.

“Gilgamesh, that’s fine work you’re doing right there. I hope I had a son like you one day and help me in the forge.” He was wiping away a tear from his eye, it made me awkward seeing this mountain of a guy being emotional, makes me want to slap him to get his senses back. hoho

“Well the only thing left for you to learn is how to make weapons and armor, but let’s save that for another day since its getting dark. Here is your first payment for the day, since you did well and worked for four hours I think you deserve this.” He handed me a few coppers and the sword I repaired a while back.

Triing!

You have Completed the quest Bartholomew’s Forge!

You received 80 coppers and Training Sword of the North

“Thank you for this Bartholomew, I really appreciate this! I’ll come back tomorrow early in the morning, but first I got to check at the guild to try and identify the dagger.” I was walking away from him when he called back to me.

“Let me try identifying that dagger you have there, I might look like this but I have you know I have Identify Basic level 5! Hohoh come on and take it out! Identify!” He cast the spell that would reveal the dagger’s information when I took out the dagger but seemingly it didn’t work even after a few times.

Identifying failed.

Identifying failed.

Identifying failed.

“Oh well go to Lilith then and let her try it out, she has Intermediate level 1 on Identifying so she could do it.” He pushed me outside with more force than necessary so I could get out and not look at his red face from embarrassment.

So I went back to the guild and walked up to the room where Lilith was and took out my dagger putting it on top of the counter.

“Oh sir you’re back! Did Bartholomew help you by getting a few coppers? He looks scary but he’d gladly help anyone that needs it!” She was speaking with a knowing smile on her face and was waiting for me to put the money on the table.

“Thank you for introducing me with Bartholomew, he did help me out and now I got a job with him; by the way call me Gilgamesh, you are a player right? He told me you had Intermediate level in Identifying and I was hoping you could really identify this dagger of mine.” I was pointing at the dagger that was lying on the table.

”Bartholomew couldn’t identify it with his skill.” I told her as I was putting 50 coppers on the table hoping that she could help me out. She had a puzzled look on her face and I wonder why she had it on.

“Yes I am a player, Wizard Level 70, trying to save up for a new staff. Anyway it is weird Bartholomew couldn’t identify it if it came from you since you are a newbie. Let me have a look at it then.” She grabbed and cast the spell identify but she also failed on the first try.

She was getting flustered and had a bead of sweat running down her cute face, I was amused on how much concentration she was using trying to identify the small dagger. After more than 10 tries she finally identified the dagger but she was shocked to see that it wasn’t fully identified. She gave it back to me while pocketing my copper. (tsk taught I could take it back.)

“What you have there is a very unique dagger! Let me buy it for 2000, no 4000 gold!” Lilith was frantic about getting her hands on the blade but I only smiled and told her that it was by rights handed down to my race. She puffed her face and told me to register her as a friend and I went and got out of the guild.

Stretching my body from the long day I had I took another bread and ate it while holding the dagger that I just had identified. It felt familiar in my hands and I decided to try it out at the training hall that I saw on my way to the Wizard’s guild.

I arrived at the training hall and saw that only a few people had plans to train at night. I observed the few players training till I was satisfied with what I saw and picked a training dummy on the far side of a corner, I then took out my dagger and practiced the Kata’s that I had learnt long ago when I was under the tutelage of Rikku a.k.a “Ripper” the first general of the knives division in the organization. I shivered remembering the days where I was barely defending his stabs and slices near my groin. *shiver*

I took the first stance and practiced a few slashing motions till I got to the stage where I was practicing with the flow of battle assimilating the dummy with my shadow fights, pak papak papak swoosh! Slices on the dummy were almost invisible and the rate with how I was moving was too fast for some of the players to see. I was doing this for three hours till I heard a familiar sound that brought music to my ears.
