Chapter 23: In the Face of Disdain

Chapter 23: In the Face of Disdain

On my coffee table I spread a huge white paper and borrowed on of Winters big blue markers from her bag.

Gladiolus.

I wrote in big letters right in the middle. I traced a line from the middle. Random Person. Another line. Viola. Another one. Leon. My fingers tips shivered a little and I shake the nerves away. I grab a black marker and crosses out Leon's name until it wasn't visible.

It's not going to be him.

I circle Viola's name. Now that I hunk about it she has the best resources to find such information. As for the crimes themselves she might not have committed them personally for all I know but I have a feeling she may know more than she should. I got lost in my thoughts as I continued to doddle random stuff on the paper.

Winter puts her elbows on the table and flops her checks on her palms with a pout on her face. "Uncle I'm bored with the toys I brought. Can we go to the store and buy new ones please?" She blinks and gives me puppy dog eyes. I hate cute little kids. You can't say no to them. But I'll see if I can convince her to stay. I have too much on my mind I'm not feeling energetic enough to walk around for hours tell she picks he toys she wants.

"How about you paint?"

She shakes her head, "I used up all of it. I just want new toys that are more fun!"

I roll my eye with a smile. Maybe walking will help clear my mind a little. "Alright fine let's go."

----------------------------------------

I followed her around as she would pick up a toy ask me what I think about it then she puts it back on the shelves.

This is gonna be a long day.

As I followed her some one called my name and I turned around. He sounded familiar.

"Mr. Cameron! I can't believe I keep running into you like this. It's like we're neighbours." He stops to take his breath and beams at me with sparkly eyes. It's Jake.

"Hey, Josh right?" I know exactly who he is. I mean Leon and I have been stalking him and we know more than most of his friends would know about him. I need to pretend like I don't remember him much.

His smile fades a little but it was still almost from ear to ear. "It's Jake actually." he corrects. A little hand wrapped around his.

"I'm sorry." I chuckled awkwardly, rubbing the back of my head. "Who's this little one?" I point at the little girl who hid behind Jakes legs.

He picks her up in his arms. "This is my daughter. Lia, say hi."

"Hello.." she whispers then hides her face in her father's jacket.

Jake pats her head and mouths as he pointed at her with his chin."She's a little shy." He puts her down and holds her hand. "We were actually here to buy her some toys." He explains.

Winter hands me a toy she was looking at earlier. "I want this." She says then stops to look at Jakes little daughter.

Jake smiles at Winter. "I didn't know you have a daughter."

"Oh no, I'm taking care of her for someone." I hold her hand because I know she'll use this opportunity where I'm distracted to wonder about.

A phone rang and it wasn't mine. Jake pulls out his phone and checks who it was.

"I gotta go. It's a pleasure to keep meeting my most favourite author of all time like this. I think Lia wants to be friends with Winter too. Bye." He takes the toys from Lias hand and jogs with her to the check out. I wonder why he's in a hurry like this.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Winter took another hour to pick her toys. The bill was crazy but apparently I'm about to be a millionaire so it didn't matter anyway. We headed back home.

Winter played with her toys well through midnight. Trying to take her toys away would result in a temper tantrum and I really don't know how to deal with them so I just let her be.

Yasmin come to pick her up the next day and ordered me to get ready for the fan meeting. I picked out the most expensive coat I had and wore it with a turtle neck. I've seen this style multiple times and I think it makes me look classy and much more elegant then I am.

I walk out to find Yasmin waiting for me in a brand new car. I've never seen something more fancy or as expensive in real life before. A Pangani Huayra. She's been dreaming about getting one ever since I knew her.

The door opens upwards just like in those sci-fi movies and Yasmin pops her head out. "What do you think?" With the biggest smile I've ever seen she motions for me to come sit.

"It's really nice." It's way more than nice but I'm dumbfounded for words.

"It's amazing. Did you check your bank account?" She asks carefully backing up. She's usually a reckless driver but how can she be after buying a car worth more than a million.

"Not yet." I wonder how much I have now.

"Well do it after the fan meeting. I don't want you to faint on me."

"Where's Winter?"

"You think you're the only friend I have?" "You know I don't trust nannies i left her with another close friend of mine."

She pulls up into the furthest parking spot away from people's eyes so no one tries to touch it. Before we leave she kisses the steering wheel goodbye.

Right when the elevator pops open, as if the sound barrier has been suddenly lifted, my ears fill with the mixture of peoples conversation. A baby crying. No babies. A toddler whining in the distant. Someone fighting with the cashier. The rest where all mediocre conversations as people walked around buying clothing, shoes or any other item you can find at a mall.

To the left is a line. So long that I don't exactly know here it starts or ends. The line extends all the way upstairs near a table.

"Let's go." Yasmin starts heading towards the table at the top of the stairs. I found myself counting as I passed but the number of people lining up . I lost count by the time I reached up.

They're all my fans. I was acutely aware of the fact that I had started to gain popularity after gladiolus appeared I never expected this many people to show up to my fan signing event.

I smiled at each fan and signed the book they choose. All my smiles where genuinely from my heart. As time went buy my hand got tired any my signature became slopped and I get bad so I took a five minute break as Yasmin sat in the back typing her heart away on her phone.

Just as I lean back and strep chef my fingers and arms someone in the middle of the line started to yell loudly.

"Excuse me you can't skip in the line we are all waiting." A women holding her son glared at a man who seems to have skipped her in line.

I get up off my chair and walked towards them. I hope I can calm this before it escalates.

The man looks her up and down and crosses his arms with a conceited look on his face. "I can do whatever I want. Look at you of course I deserve to skip you in line at least." He intones.

The women's jaw drops. She seems to understand what he's trying to get at. "What's that supposed to mean?" Her son hides behind her with a terrified look on his features.

The rude conceited man points at his hand and punches his own skin, "You see this? This means I'm more superior to you."

He really did it. He really sad that. I can't believe what my eyes are seeing.

"You what do you think you're doing?" My voice went deeper without my intent. I was starting to feel physically angry as I trembled with rage.

"Oh you're him. "The man recognizes me and hands me his book for me to sign. "Here can I have your signature?"

I take the book and an overwhelming urge to rip it to shreds took over me. It's a hard copy so I couldn't do much damage so I threw it on the ground. The man looked at me with a gaping mouth.

"What the fuck? This is how you treat your fans?"

"I'm ashamed to have a fan like you."

"Why are you standing up for him? Could it be your mother is the same? Cause it makes no sense otherwise."

My fingers curled into balls and my jaw tensed up. A raging fire surged through my veins. It felt as if I was losing touch with reality. Anger plagued my mind.

The man was on the floor, his hands on his cheek with a horrified look on his face. Next to me was Leon. His knuckles with a little hint of blood. They shook by his sides as he tried to calm himself.

"And who the fuck are you?" The man screamed as he groaned in pain, clutching the side of his face.

Leon' stares him dead in the eye. "Sue me." he breathed and turned on his heels, stomping away with heavy steps.
