"A man in his late sixties was found dead in his house. He seems to have been strangled to death by the use of several layers of magnetic films taken from cassette tapes. He was surrounded by yellow and purple flowers, the same that are found in the gladiolus cases. The forensic team is yet to figure out the identity of the man and the exact cause of death. People are wondering what crimes this old man has committed to attract the wrath of gladiolus. We will update once we have his identity." She ended with a fake smile and the theme music came on.
The news anchor seemed to be more enthusiastic than normal. For the past few month they have been following the same four topics so it slowly turned into a monotone robotic report everyday but it seems like the change has sparked a little excitement. The appearance of a vigilante is probably another reason why.
We had cracked the code but the night of the man was already dead before Viola can figure out who gladiolus was talking about. We wanted to stalk outside the man's door so when gladiolus leaves we can quietly follow him until we figured out who he was but now that plan has gone to waste. This guy is merciless he doesn't even have us three days to actually do something with these codes he keeps throwing at us.
I shut down the TV and threw the remote controller to the side. The end of the week is nearing and I need to write a filler chapter in two days time but I have no idea where to start. Yasmin, my publisher has been sending me emails every seven hours threatening if I don't send the editor my draft by tomorrow she'll come personally I make me do it.
Last time that happened... well let's just say I was extremely sleep deprived. She kept me up for twenty-eight hours straight and whenever I would sleep or even take a little while longer to blink she would poke me with a pen. It haunts me to this day.
I shiver at the thought of that happening again.
I need to get inspiration for my story so I took Oreo on a walk to the lake. She skipped around happily as I tried to slow her down so I could take in the never changing beauty of this simple garden.
The sound of the birds chirping and the melody of the wind filled my ears. The swans and little ducks swam around in swirls. Little pieces algae filled the edges of the lake pooling around. The smell of dew on the emerald grass in the morning and the sight of vibrant wildflowers. Whenever I come here all of my senses are enlightened and I get a boost in creativity of tenfolds. My bestselling books are a product of breathing in the air of this place.
As I was drowning in my thoughts but desperate scream pulls me back from the depth of my mind. A few meters in front of me there was a lady holding head head on her hands and screaming help. Her face pale and her eyes shook. My eyes follow the path of her horrified gaze.
It's a little kid and he's drowning. He kept his head up as he tried to maintain himself afloat. Thrashing around trying to grab something but he was close to the middle of the lake by now and their was absolutely nothing for him to grab onto.
On instinct, I let go of Oreos dog leash and dived into the water. I didn't have time to think if it was deep enough to be safe for me to dive.
The adrenaline added to my speed as I cut through the water and pulled up the kid who was starting to go under.
He was unconscious.
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
I drag him to the side and pushed him up on the pavement. My heart was beating out of my chest. I jump over next to the kid.
I need to save him.
The mothers face paled and she fainted. She needs help as well but I only have one pair of hands and the hold is the one in the dire situation.
I immediately started CPR and all the resuscitative measures that I've learnt in my last course of swimming. After a minute of chest compressions the kid spit up the water and his eyes opened wide.
"I'm so sorry you're going to get a cold like this." She starts looking around but i mean where can she get a jacket in the middle of a park. It's okay because my house is near anyway. I can jog there and maybe that will also help heat my body up. I'm shivering but I heard that it is a good sign because once you stop shivering, that's when your body buckles under the cold, and gives up in keeping you alive.
"It's fine." I took of my wet jacket and shirt because the wind was cooling it and I was starting to shiver. My teeth began to chatter. I should've at least taken off my jacket before I jumped but I'm glad the kids alright so it doesn't matter.
I wave at the little kid who hid behind his mom and peaked at me and gave his mom a little smile before turning on my heal and grabbing Oreos leash so we can go home.
"What happened to your back?" she asked.
My back? What's wrong with it did I cut myself on some glass or something? I try to peak at my back but it was to no avail. I felt like a dog chasing his tail so I stopped and asked her with an inquisitive eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"These scars how did you get them?" Scars? So I wasn't cut right now. Thank goodness I was thinking about getting a tetanus shot but they're so painful. But I don't remember having scars on my back.
"What scars are you taking about?"
She looks at me with a stunned face. Like 'how do you not know about them'? As a kid I hurt myself quite a lot of times so I have scars that I don't even remember getting.
It's probably something I got when I fell of the monkey bars back in elementary school. I remember it hurt quite a lot. There was something sharp in the sand and I fell right on top of it. It didn't need stitches so it must not have been too bad but since it was on my back I've never seen it so I don't know how big it really is. Maybe scars grow with you so it probably looks bigger than it really was.
The lady blinks twice, shakes her head and a wide smile formed on her lips. "Thank you so much you saved his life. I owe you everything." She prevaricated. I mean it is impolite to ask strangers about their scars and I think she realized that but really I didn't mind all that much they're just playground scars.
"I only did what I should do. How can I see a kid drown and not save him when I know how to swim?" Thats the equivalent of a doctor not standing up when someone has a medical emergency on a plane.
The lady looks me up and down and finally seemed to realize that I'm drenched and need to get home as soon as possible. "I'm so sorry your clothes got wet." She pulls out her phone. "Can I have your contact number? I must thank you properly."
I shove my hand, "It's fine you don't have to."
"I must."
She's the persistent type and I wanna go home before I get hypothermia. I mean I understand she's trying to be nice but there is no need to pay me back for something anyone with the ability would've done. "Then you can donate to a cancer charity. A family member of mine had succumbed to that disease. If you donate anything to such a charity that would mean a lot." Hopefully she would settle with this.
The lady nods "Alright I will, thank you again." She grabs her bag and I saw it coming so I said a quick bye and jogged away.
I could feel the cold deep in my bones. A drop of water from my head which I hadn't manage to dry trailer down a strand of hair and onto my shoulder I shivered as if stole the heat bit my bit as it traveled down my arm.
Oreo started running faster and the leash was almost yanked out of my grip but I didn't complain as I wanted to get home as fast as I could before I develop hypothermia.
