Today in monster class they were attempting to communicate with a water creature. The creature is called a Sealick. It’s a walrus that absorbed the light element. They become incredibly smart and knowledgeable, but also apparently, they act like children. This one was swimming around completely ignoring them. They were in a room with a large in-ground tank. They were instructed by the teacher that the creature had valuable knowledge and they were required to find out what that was. They had been placed in the same group as before. And it would seem Sarah’s attitude hadn’t changed.
“This stupid fish,” Sarah said. Suddenly it swam past and splashed her. “Arghghg.” Her face was red, and she was staring daggers at the beast. The rest of the group did their best to stifle their laughter.
“Ok, come on guys, we only have 20 minutes to figure this out. Any ideas?” Jared asked.
“What does the book say?” Norea said. Jack flipped the bestiary they had been given to the designated page.
“The book says that we need to find something it likes or wants,” Jack responded.
“Well, it seems to like splashing Sarah,” Sable chided. She looked over at him angrily. It looked like she was about to say something, but Jared stepped in.
“What could we use? Any ideas? Everyone empty their pockets.” It was very interesting to see what each student carried around in their pockets. Jack had some schematics and random magic equipment. Sable had snacks in his pockets. Jared had a few coins and a small keychain. Norea didn’t have pockets. And Sarah had some change and a small crystal.
“What the heck is that crap,” Sarah said pointing towards Sable’s pile. Sable scratched his head.
“Uh, sometimes I get hungry in class, so I like to carry snacks with me.” The food was all junk. Treats and candies.
“It’s a wonder you’re not fat!” She walked over and lifted a distinctive pastry that Jack recognized. It was a doughnut. When she held it up the Sealick made a sound of curiosity.
“Wait, what was that?” Jared asked.
“What?” Jack asked.
“It just made a sound when you lifted that doughnut.”
“It did? Really?” Norea asked.
“Yes. Gimme that” Jared held the doughnut towards the tank and the monster swam closer to the group. It still seemed very wary, but it was clearly interested in the pastry. “that’s it, we can use the treats!”
“Ok little buddy, we have something you want. You have something we want. Let’s make a trade.” Sable said. The creature swam slightly closer and looked to be listening. “We will give you this donut, and you will tell us the important information.” The creature seemed to mull it over, but it was taking its time.
“We don’t have all day,” Sarah said angrily. When she spoke, the monster seemed to back away.
“Sarah stop. You’re scaring it.” Jared cut in. The monster was staring at her with alarm. Suddenly there was a soft splash sound. Everyone looked over and saw that Sable had thrown a tidbit into the tank. The monster didn’t move for a second, then it dashed through the water and quickly nabbed the pastry.
“Haha. Nice,” He threw a second one, and the Sealick happily chased the treats around. Sable seemed to have a lot with him. After a minute he slowed down and made it come closer to the edge. “Come on.” Sable was calmly ushering the beast closer. He seemed to be a natural with animals, and monsters too.
“So can they understand what we are saying?” Jared asked.
Jack continued reading through the book’s information. “Uh, I’m not sure. It doesn’t say exactly.”
“Well, what does it say!?” Sarah asked angrily.
“it’s pretty vague on how to communicate with it. The book seems to be more focused on its strengths and weaknesses. Apparently, it can swim up to 50mph, that’s really fast.”
This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.
“Focus Jack,” Jared said.
“Right, sorry.” He continued to scan the page for any useful information. Sable did his best to keep the Sealick distracted.
“Wait, uh. It says here something about why it’s called a Sealick. Apparently, its tongue is super long.”
“Uhhhh guys,” Norea said nervously. The group looked over to see that the Sealick was crawling out of the tank and was chasing Sable. Once it was on land, it would hop. The beast was easily over 1000 pounds.
“A little help,” Sable whined.
“I do declare. Stop teasing me and give me that darn pastry.” It was the Sealick talking. Its voice was very pompous and had a thick pompous accent.
Everyone just stopped and stared for a moment. The Sealick looked very similar to its original shape as a walrus. Once it absorbed the light element it seemed to have grown 2 more tusks, so it had four. The voice of the Sealick was nothing compared to how it looked. It was very confusing.
“Uh, I’m very sorry. We would love to give you the rest of our treats. We uh just need the information first.” Jared said.
“Information. Well, I don’t know about that. I don’t know such information.”
“Please, sir,” Norea said quietly.
“Sir? I am no sir. I am lord Flatfin of the three coral reef houses.”
“My apologies lord Flatfin. We meant no disrespect.” Jared said. The Sealick folded his fins in front of his torso, just like a human would. “so uh, we have been tasked with getting some important information from you. We are highly honored by your presence, your uhm grace.” Being polite to the Sealick was working well. Something about the way it was acting reminded Jack of Chad.
“This is ridiculous.” Sarah stomped towards lord Flatfin with no decorum.
“Do you know who I am?” he asked.
“I don’t care, do you know who I am?” She asked angrily.
“I most certainly do not.”
“Well, I’m the one who is gonna shove my foot so far up your...”
“Sarah! That’s enough.” Jared cut in. He seemed to be the only one Sarah listened to. She grumbled and walked away.
“This is stupid.” She said.
“Sorry about that lord Flatfin. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jared Tremscale.” Jack loved having Jared on his team. He always took everything seriously. He didn’t talk too much, and he seemed very nice. “We have been tasked with getting some sort of valuable information. I am sure such an impressive individual as yourself would be willing to help us.”
“Ah, finally. A man of culture. Well, sire Jared Tremscale it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I would be happy to begin a discussion if you would just give me that last pastry.”
Sable was still doing his best to stay away for lord Flatfin. But he was running out of space. “My lord, it would be our pleasure to give you the last pastry. We just need reassurance that you would still be willing to converse with us.”
“Yes yes. Just give me that darn pastry.”
With nowhere to run, Sable tossed the donut high into the air, and lord Flatfin did an impressive jump to grab it from the air. He landed with a very large crash. The group barely stayed on their feet. “ahhh, that is delectable. Thank you very much.” The Sealick started slowly heading back towards the water.
“Wait, we had a deal,” Jared said.
“I’m sorry my dear boy, we in fact never made a deal. And since you no longer have any delectable treats, you no longer interest me.”
Jared opened his mouth to protest, but he seemed flustered. It was Sable who cut in. “Who said I was out of treats?”
The Sealick froze. He slowly turned back, eyeing Sable. In Sable’s hand was a huge looking flaky pastry that looked like it was overflowing with chocolate. Where the hell was he keeping that? Lord Flatfin’s eyes narrowed at Sable then he eyed the pastry. You could tell he really wanted it. No one had said anything. After a moment it was Sable who spoke again. “Well if you don’t want it, I guess I’ll eat it.” He brought the treat up to his mouth and was about to take a bite when the Sealick quickly held his fins out in a warding gesture.
“wait wait, I’m sorry.”
Sable paused and eyed the monster. “You lied to us earlier.” The monster looked down in shame. “Sire lord Flatfin of the three coral reef houses. I offer you this treat only if you swear on whatever it is you hold dear to give us the information we require.”
The Sealick tried to look angry and defiant for a moment, but then Sable took a small bite. Lord Flatfin turned into a begging mess. “No please, I beg you. I want that treat soooo badly.”
“Swear you will give us the information.
“I swear, I swear.”
“Information first. Then you can have the treat.”
“Fine…The code phrase I was given is the color of the sky is blue.” Everyone stared at him blankly. “I swear.”
“If you are lying, we will make sure you never get a treat ever again.” Sarah had walked back over and was standing dangerously close to the monster. She didn’t seem scared though. She actually seemed to be intimidating the beast. It was trying to lean away from her.
“I swear.”
“Ok, you can have it.” And with that Sable tossed the donut back toward the water. The Sealick happily hopped back into the water and scooped up his treat.
The teacher was surprisingly happy with the squad. “Hahaha, very well done. So far you have been the only group to get the information from Lord Flatfin.”
“Wait, what? Really?”
“Yes! I may have made the challenge slightly too hard for first years. But you all did great at finding something he wanted and did an even better job at bargaining.” As mentioned in the book they are extremely childish. Sometimes they can be hard to work with. But you all did great. Congratulations.”
