20 - A Spark of Shopping

Jack had been saving all his income for a while and had finally decided to go and spend some money. Jack had never really been much of a shopper, but the delights of the capital city were too much to pass up. Jack invited his two friends with him: Chad and Sable. Chad and Sable had quickly hit it off and they swiftly found themselves doing everything they could together. It seemed like none of the boys had friends before the academy, so they were all very happy to have someone their age to explore and have fun with.

They started in the clothing district. Jack needed some clothes besides his uniform. There were all sorts of stores for every type of clothing. Jack walked down the streets still marvelling at the abundance. Eventually, he found a shop that appealed to his eyes. The shop had more basic-looking clothing that was crafted extremely well and wasn’t priced too absurdly. Jack had a problem with all the prices, they all seemed insane. But his supposedly small income was incredibly high to compensate so he didn’t really mind. Some of the clothes had incredibly advanced enchantments on them. Some enchantments were simpler like a nice shirt that was made with a material that was able to change color. Jack found some socks that he loved. The thread they were made of could shrink and grow depending on the size and shape of the foot. They always fit perfectly. Jack instantly purchased multiple pairs.

Another piece of apparel was these ridiculously useful shoes. They were like a multi-tool. The shoes had multiple settings that helped the wearer to perform those functions. First was the ability to muffle the sounds, next they could amplify the person’s motion. When Jack tried this function, he fell over the first couple of times. The effect wasn’t anything compared to what someone with the motion element could do, but it did help you move a little faster. The results weren't quite perfect. The rest of you would be slow and noisy because the benefits only applied to the shoes.

After getting himself some nice pants along with some other simple accessories Jack moved on to the other districts of the city. The district Chad had been so excited to visit was where they went next. It was the weapons and armor district. The city had many different areas and the general design and outlook of the city changed depending on where you were. The weapon and armor district was an interesting combination of modern and traditional. Some stores seem to be generalized and had all types of weapons. Other stores were specialty stores that only dealt with one type of weapon or armor. Jack had no idea where to begin, luckily, he brought the most knowledgeable person he knew. Jack turned to Chad. “Well, where do we begin?”

Chad was like a kid in a candy shop, but that kid had a map and knew what he was doing. Chad apparently had already been to the district and knew his way around very well. He quickly brought Jack around showing him the different stores that had the best wares. Chad as it turns out seemed to be a bit of a wealthy spender. All the stores he brought Jack to looked like they were the most expensive around them. But as Jack examined the wares he had to admit, the products were incredibly nice. All the places seemed to even offer custom work. Chad has brought them to a fancy gun store. The store only sold mechanical models and they were all fairly simple. It was the quality of the guns that was the reason Chad had brought them here. “These are some of the finest works I have ever seen. The way they cold pressed the steel before milling it ensures the gun will never deform from heat. The rivets they used to hold the internals together are all solid brass which means you won’t get any rust or corrosion. All the internal gears, springs, and cylinders have been milled to 100 thousands of an inch. The riffling on their barrels is a twin-tapered spiral. To put it simply the weapons sold here are designed and built to perfection.” Chad was holding an old lever action rifle that had a wooden stock. He handed the rifle over to Jack who had never really held a rifle that was built in the older fashion. The rifle had a wooden stock that ran halfway up the barrel. The rifle had a smooth lever action below the trigger that would eject the spent cartridge and load a new one. “That mechanism is simple and won’t jam even with dirt, mud, or snow. That there can hit accurately within 200 yards and fires the common 200-grain hollow points that can blow a hole the size of my fist in anything that isn’t steel or magically protected.”

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“Uh, I mean it’s very nice, but I don’t know if it’s my type.”

Chad looked almost insulted, but he took the gun back and continued to browse the shop’s wares. A few moments later he brought over another gun. This gun looked much more distinct and abnormal. It still had the same obvious shape as a gun, but it looked very abstract and conforming. The gun was a new model that was made from an advanced polymer. The grip and stock were moulded into one piece and the clip smoothly fit into the large piece between the trigger and the stock. The handholds were smooth and conformed to the hands very nicely. The handle along the barrel was tilted slightly and had a very nice tacky grip. The gun was incredibly advanced looking, and Jack had no doubt this gun was at the pinnacle of science. “The Tristan P9X9, it’s the exact model used by spec-ops. Has a 45-capacity magazine, that can be equipped with digital tracer rounds that can be locked onto through the digital thermotech scope.”

“I mean Jesus Christ.” That was all Jack could say. “Wrong way man, I’m looking for a simple gun.”

“What the fuck does that mean? What is a simple gun?

“I don’t know… like….” Jack looked around the shop. Then he saw a simple-looking pistol and picked it up. “This maybe?”

“Whoa, wait really.” Chad’s demeanour instantly changed. “you want that gun?”

“Uh wait. What is this gun?” Jack looked at the innocuous-looking pistol in his hand. It looked like a mix between a revolver and a newer generation gun that had its clip in the handle.

Chad slowly approached him with something like awe on his face. “That is a handheld mini arcane nuke launcher.”

It was quiet for a moment as Jack had to think about what that meant. After a few moments, his face slowly paled and he put the gun back without saying another word. After slowly turning back to Chad and Sable. Jack said. “uh, no.”

Slowly the boys made their way through different weapon shops. Jack was hard to please but Chad was determined to help him find a weapon. Eventually, they came across a slightly different store. The store featured customizable weapons that came in pieces. It was Jack’s favorite store so far and he found a gun he liked.

Finally, he found a firearm that worked for him. He spent way too much but he got a very useful weapon. It was a very customizable model that came with a bunch of options. The gun came in pieces, and they would click together. Depending on the situation you needed you could change anything on the gun. The firing chamber could easily be turned into a slow-shooting high-calibre rifle or a fast submachine gun. It was a very customizable weapon that had Jack giddy with interest. Jack was more interested in how all the pieces fit together than the actual gun, but he had to admit it was a nice gun. He planned to use it in its compact form. A small submachine gun that when holstered was folded and shrunk into a small cube, almost the size of a brick. It was amazing how much it could shrink. If you pressed one button it would expand and slide open almost silently. Just a very subtle buzzed and whirring as the barrel expanded out, and the stock and mag also extended. Then the sight would pop up at the end. It was very satisfying to watch, and Jack messed around with it a couple of times before finally putting it away. Thinking about everything he had bought and the fun he had with his friends today, Jack smiled to himself. Today was a good day.
