Interlude 1: Incident Investigations

Interlude 1: Incident Investigations

At the Ardsville Police department (3 hours after the incident)

George West was the police chief for the city of Ardsville. Most days were pretty quiet. Over the years, he’d had to deal with the occasional high-profile murder or robbery, but nothing like the current situation. In fact, in 25 years of being a police officer, he’d never heard of a case like this. He sighed.

“Ok… I know you just told me everything. But let’s go over it one more time just so everyone here has the facts straight. Officer Slorn, once more from the top please”

“Yes sir.”

Office Slorn pulled up photos of two people dressed in police uniforms getting into a police car.

“These two men whose identities are currently unknown stole police uniforms and a police car this morning. Then, they met up with a currently unidentified man who is in the hospital awaiting further questioning. At that point, they broke into the home of another man whose identity is currently unknown. The victim was found dead at the scene, along with the two suspects dressed in police uniforms. The third suspect sustained injuries that he is currently being treated for in the hospital.”

George stroked his chin in thought.

“Can you be more specific on the injuries please? Just to keep the record straight.”

“Yes sir. The two suspects dressed in police uniforms died of gunshot wounds, while the third suspect had his hands blown off. The cause of the third suspect’s injuries is still under investigation.”

“What’s the status of collecting evidence? Do we have the pictures from the scene yet?”

“Sir, the pictures just haven’t gotten here quite yet.”

“We’re going to need to get those as soon as possible. We’re going to need help from higher up law enforcement agencies for this investigation, and they’ll need the evidence as quickly as possible to put this case together.”

With that, the police chief got up and moved to leave the room, only to be stopped by Officer Slorn.

“Chief, I don’t think we’ll need outside help for this case. I mean, we’ve dealt with murder investigations before this one.”

“Yes. We have dealt with murder investigations. That being said, you’ve just told me that the one suspect had his hands blown off. Meaning we’re now dealing with an explosive investigation. I appreciate your confidence in our department, but I’m still going to get help from higher agencies.”

“Chief, we can do this just fine. We don’t know if his hands were really blown off by explosives. Maybe his gun just blew up in his hands or something. Let’s just not deal with outside entities.”

“Officer Slorn. We’re getting outside help. As soon as any investigation potentially involves explosives, whether or not explosives are actually involved, I am legally required to get extra help for the investigation from higher up law enforcement agencies. The decision is final. Do I make myself clear?”

Slorn glares a bit at the police chief.

“Crystal Clear chief.”

“Good.”

The police chief walked out of the office. But then, rather than returning to his desk like he normally would, he instead walked outside the building and got into his police car. Things weren’t adding up, and he didn’t like it. Pulling out of the police station’s parking lot, he began driving over to the hospital.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Walking in the doors was always a sobering experience for him. Over the years, he’d seen people walk out these doors after surviving things they should have died from, but just as many times he’d seen the opposite. It held a deep significance to him. A burning reminder while life was limited, it could be much shorter if you weren’t careful. And the situation he was in required extreme care.

George walked straight up to the counter and stopped in front of the Hospitals Secretary

“Chief George! Good to see you. How are you today?”

“I’m sorry. But I’m in a hurry. I need to see the pictures of the two suspects disguised as police officers as well as the man who lost both hands.”

“Yes sir. Give me just a moment. “

The secretary made a quick phone call to check if they had the pictures available yet.

“Alright. The photos are in the morgue. You know how to…”

The Secretary watched the police chief quickly leave as soon as she had given him the location.

“Okay. That kind of day…”

George got to the Morgue as quickly as he could. And after meeting with the doctor and seeing the photos for himself, he quickly got back to his police car, and made a phone call to a certain person. Once the phone call was made. He typed in a new location into his GPS, turned on his sirens, and began to drive. His destination? A certain house that belonged to a certain person before their untimely, and now highly suspect demise.

The house was a 45-minute drive, but George made it in 30. Arriving there he was greeted by a standoff between the two Officers that had been assigned to the crime scene and the Investigation's bureau SWAT team that had just arrived to take over the scene. To his horror, his own officers had their weapons drawn and pointed at the SWAT team. What was going on here? The SWAT Team shouted at the officers to put their weapons down. Quickly getting out of his car, George grabbed his shotgun and joined the SWAT Team.

"We know what you did! Put your weapons down now! Don't make this worse for yourselves!"

The officers laughed.

"Well, if it isn't the dumbest police chief to ever serve the office! Aren't you full of yourself?"

George growled, but he wouldn't let himself get goaded that easily.

"Drop your weapons now, you will be fired upon! This is your last warning!"

The officers laughed again. Then the one on the left turned to his partner.

"Well Al? I guess we better (snorts with laughter) drop our weapons. Wouldn't want to be (laughs again) fired upon!"

Both officers dropped their guns, but just as George started to breathe a sigh of relief, the unthinkable happened. Both officers charged at the SWAT Team with speeds George couldn't believe. The SWAT Team was also so shocked at how fast they were moving, that by the time they moved to react, the two officers had already reached them.

One SWAT Team member tasered the first officer, only to then be thrown 50 feet into a tree with a sickening crunch. Another SWAT Team member was thrown into the SWAT truck with such force that the metal bent from the impact. One SWAT member began to unload his rifle into one of the officers to limited effect, knocking the one officer down for the moment. The other officer went to take down the SWAT member but was quickly met with a shotgun blast from George straight to the chest.

To George's shock, the officer began to get back up. George unloaded another blast, only to have the officer quickly getting back up again. Only after a full 4 more shotgun blasts straight to the chest did the officer finally stop moving. The 3 remaining swat members had, to a limited extent, detained the second officer... by pinning him under the SWAT van. Somehow, despite that amount of force being enough to kill anyone else, it was only enough to prevent the officer from moving.

"What the hell did you do? What the hell are you!" George screamed at the pinned officer.

The officer laughed.

"By the time you find out. It will be too late for you, or anyone else in this country, no, this world, to do anything about it."

With that cryptic statement, the officer pulled out a bottle and drank it before anyone could do anything about it.

"The Stained Crime Syndicate will have all of you under its rule soon enough." The officer gurgled out laughing in his last dying breath.

George quickly went and called for medical support and to report the situation on the ground. 15 minutes later, a helicopter touched down in the yard, and a woman in a suit got out. George quickly went over to greet her.

"Agent Green! Good to see you. We have a hell of a situation on our hands..."
