Chapter 12: the body

"You foolish , why did you open your eyes?"

Randolph hit vincent hard, to the point that he remained silent for a few minutes from the pain. He held his head in pain, looking at Randolph with anguish and anger.

"Damn it, why did you hit me?"

"Who allowed you to open your eyes, huh?"

Randolph was filled with anger; he didn't like it when someone made a mistake in front of him, it made him furious.

"Why did I open my eyes? The lights suddenly went out, so I was surprised."

He hesitated a bit in his last words, feeling that what he had done was wrong.

"It disappeared because your focus may have been scattered. Have you noticed that your focus has become sharp and you no longer feel what’s around you when you started sensing the mana?"

Randolph asked, it was clear that he was trying to calm himself down.

"Yes, why did this happen?"

Vincent was wondering why he didn't feel more about him than why his focus became so intense.

"When a person gathers mana, their focus must be at its highest levels, because mana consists of very small particles that cannot be easily seen. Therefore, when a person pours all their concentration into sensing and collecting mana, while not paying attention to their surroundings, at that moment, mana becomes manifest. But when a person's attentionis distracted, of course, their focus will be disrupted, which is why the person's awareness of mana disappears, and that's what happened to you just now."

Randolph believed that it was difficult for a person to gather mana on the first attempt; only the greatest of geniuses had a chance at it. This was because it required not only high concentration but also a suitable environment where mana was abundant. Therefore, most mages failed in their first attempts to gather mana.

There was a look of surprise on Vincentface; he hadn't expected that he would have to focus all his attention on sensing and gathering mana, to the point that he shouldn't even breathe.

"Now try again."

He returned to his old position, closed his eyes, and focused on sensing the mana once again. The lights appeared again, more lights of different colors began to show up. Vincent tried to move them, but only some of them moved and disappeared in an instant. He tried again, but the same thing happened. He didn’t know what mistake he had made, or if there was even a mistake at all; he focused more on the mana, but to no avail.

Suddenly, he felt a terrible pain in his chest and throat, his awareness returned to the real world, and he opened his eyes as wide as he could. He gasped for breath, as if he had been underwater for ten minutes, feeling like his lungs were about to burst.

Randolph seemed to expect this; the process of sensing mana was incredibly exhausting. The reason was that when a person focused entirely on sensing mana alone, it made them forget even to breathe.

After a while, Vincent breathing calmed down a bit, and his condition returned to normal. He did not like failure, no matter what he was doing. This made him the best thief in his original world. It was rooted in his past, a past he did not want to remember. Now, due to his inability to succeed in gathering mana, this situation left him feeling bitter. He returned to his old position and closed his eyes, without even allowing Randolph to speak.

That made Randolph smile a little, even though the process of sensing and gathering mana is tiring and often some give up after a few attempts; the determination he saw in vincent's eyes made him feel a bit of happiness.

He stayed in this state until nightfall, unable to gather even a single mana, but he is improving over time. In this attempt, he managed to activate all the lights for a few seconds before his attention wandered.

He opened his eyes; the forest was now dark. The only light came from the moon and the glow on the trees. He tried to move his hand to yawn, but was met with a terrible pain throughout his body, causing him to lie on the ground without moving.

Randolph saw that, and quickly opened the small bag in his hand and took out a small pill, which could disappear in the palm of his hand. The pill was gray with some other colors on it. Randolph knelt down, held Finn's head and lifted it slightly, placed the gray pill under vincent's tongue and closed his mouth, lowered his head, and waited for a while.

He began to feel that the pill was starting to dissolve under his tongue, and the pain was beginning to fade away. He was drowning in sweat, opened his eyes slightly, and felt as if a heavy rock had been lifted off his body. He took a few breaths and sat up with difficulty.

"How do you feel, little one?"

There was a smile on Randolph's face.

"What happened? I felt as if my body was starting to tear apart and convulse."

He was panting a little, and he said these words in a broken manner. There was a hint of anxiety in his voice about the pain he felt.

"What a precise description!. What happened to you just now is very common, because when a person confines themselves for long periods, sometimes up to hours, and their focus becomes extremely exhausting, the body automatically stops moving in order to recover."

The anxiety inside him eased a little after he heard that it is a common issue and not serious. But he remembered that pain and asked:

"But that doesn't explain the pain I felt."

He looked at Randolph with questioning eyes.

Randolph knew that Vincent might ask that.

"That's because you haven't passed the mana through your blood and bones yet, which is why they are very weak to endure this level of exhaustion, and that's why they express it as pain like what you felt."

He sat for a while, thinking, and then he resumed his position and prepared to try again.

"Stop right there, you won't try again!"

Randolph shouted in a firm voice.

He opened his eyes, wondering about the reason.

"Why? I want to try. Maybe I won’t fail this time”

"No, it’s not about you fail or succeed, if you try again, your body will be severely harmed, and it won't be easy to treat. And I can’t always give you this pill, because of a side effects. So no”

He felt a bit disappointed.

"Come on, let's get back. You will come here every day for training, do you understand?"

He nodded with his head while Randolph followed him to the hut.
