"So that's how it is," I said with a laugh. "Since you don't like her, why are you still with her?"
"It all started from the beginning," Yu Chengfei explained. "When our group first started making a name for ourselves, we aimed to take down the most notorious big shot in the vocational college to establish our reputation. Since we wanted to make a name for ourselves, we had to prepare thoroughly and consider all possible outcomes. The vocational college was different from other schools, full of gangsters. If a fight broke out, it would be a real mess, with police intervention being a common occurrence. In the history of fights at the vocational college, there have even been deaths."
I shivered, realizing how difficult it must have been for Yu Chengfei to rise in such an environment.
Yu Chengfei continued, "We considered all the possibilities and concluded that we had to confront them head-on, with no room for tricks or shortcuts. Since we were unfamiliar with Beiyuan, we needed someone to back us up if things went south. So, before deciding to fight, I found us a patron." He pointed to the internet café behind us and said, "That patron was Nan Nan. She was a big name at the vocational college; nobody dared to mess with her. Everyone avoided her. I won her over, then launched the fight that shook three schools a year ago. Afterward, Nan Nan helped us with the school and the police, allowing me and my brothers to emerge victorious from the battle."
I stared at Yu Chengfei in amazement, not expecting such a story between him and Nan Nan. A thought crossed my mind, so I asked, "So you and Nan Nan have been together for a long time. But last time, Yuan Shao said Nan Nan was your new girlfriend. By the way, where is Yuan Shao?"
Yu Chengfei said, "I'll tell you about Yuan Shao later. Don't worry; he's fine. Nan Nan and I have been together for a long time, but we've broken up countless times, about once a week on average. But no matter how many times we break up, we can't stay apart. If you come to see me next week, I'll tell you she's my new girlfriend again. Yuan Shao and the others joke about it all the time. Every time Nan Nan and I get back together, they say, 'Yu Ge, got a new girlfriend again?' It's just like that."
I nodded and said, "Yu Ge, you really can't dump Nan Nan. She's been a great help to you."
Yu Chengfei took a drag on his cigarette and said, "Who said she wasn't? And Nan Nan is so sexy; having her around is impressive. Although my initial motive for being with her wasn't pure, there was a time when I genuinely wanted to be with her. But over time, I found this girl increasingly unreasonable. Her capriciousness, fierceness, and stubbornness are almost incurable."
"Ahem, everyone has flaws," I said, seeing Yu Chengfei's headache, trying to comfort him.
"Flaws? Are those flaws? They're more like defects!" Yu Chengfei said indignantly. "Nan Nan and I aren't in the same class, so either I go to find her, or she comes to find me. One time, she came to find me and saw me chatting happily with another girl. Without a word, she dumped a whole desk of books on that girl's head..."
My jaw dropped. I hadn't expected Nan Nan to be so wild. The time she twisted my ear was nothing compared to this. And I used to think Xia Xue was capricious, but compared to Nan Nan, she was practically a refined lady from a painting.
"It's a headache, you know?" Yu Chengfei pointed to his head and said, "Just seeing her gives me a headache. I just want to avoid her, either hiding in the internet café or staying in my dorm. When I saw her at noon today, I immediately pretended to be asleep. But she just sat on me and wouldn't get up, no matter how nicely I spoke to her."
I remembered the scene in the internet café and couldn't help but laugh.
"You're laughing?!" Yu Chengfei reached out to pull my hair.
"Yu Ge, Yu Ge, listen to me." I dodged his hand and said, "I actually think you love Nan Nan a lot."
"Are you out of your mind?" Yu Chengfei looked me up and down.
"Really," I explained. "Take the simplest example. Just now, she was sitting on you and wouldn't let you get up, and you really didn't get up. Actually, Yu Ge, Nan Nan is just a girl. If you used a bit of force, pushing her off wouldn't be a problem. But you didn't do that because you couldn't bear to. Because you can't bear to, it means you love her."
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
"That's nonsense," Yu Chengfei said. "Is it because I can't bear to? I'm just afraid she'll beat me up!" Then, suddenly lowering his tone, he said, "Wait, it's strange. She can't beat me, so why am I afraid she'll beat me up?"
I laughed again and said, "You're afraid she'll beat you because you know you would never hit back."
Yu Chengfei lowered his head, deeply contemplating this issue.
"And another thing," I said. "If someone really wants to avoid another person, they wouldn't be found even if the other searched the ends of the earth. You always let her find you, which means you actually want to be with her."
"Nonsense," Yu Chengfei muttered. "Nonsense."
"It's easy to miss things when you're involved, but it's clear to an outsider," I said with a smile. "Yu Ge, I can see it. You two are a pair of quarreling lovers. If you really wanted to break up with her, you would've done it cleanly by now. Don't talk about her being feisty or her dad being the deputy mayor. Matters of the heart can't be forced. You break up and get back together, and this will likely continue for a lifetime."
"No way," Yu Chengfei said, holding his head in a painful manner. "I don't want to spend my life with a feisty girl."
"Hahaha," I laughed. "Yu Ge, you should be grateful. If the day ever comes when you two are forcibly separated, you'll probably go crazy, crying that you can't live without her for even a day." When I said this, I was just joking, but little did I know that it would come true. In the future, Yu Chengfei would indeed face this calamity.
But that was a long, long time later. For now, let's turn our attention back to the front of the internet café. Looking back, we were quite relaxed at that time. I was the newly crowned boss at Chenggao, eager to make a mark, while Yu Chengfei was already a well-known figure at the vocational college, feeling troubled by the girl named Nan Nan in the café.
"Don't worry," Yu Chengfei said, laughing too. "If that day ever comes, I'll beat drums and set off firecrackers to let the whole world know how happy I am!" In hindsight, that statement was incredibly foolish.
"Alright, enough about that," I said. "What's up with Yuan Shao? How are we handling Maizi?"
Yu Chengfei said, "Yuan Shao is laying low for a few days. He'll be back soon. As for Maizi, let Nan Nan handle it. She knows many second-generation officials and wealthy kids. That circle has already formed, so it won't be a big problem."
I breathed a sigh of relief and said with a smile, "Nan Nan is great. I should thank her properly."
"Call her sister-in-law!" Suddenly, someone grabbed my ear tightly. "How many times have I told you to call her sister-in-law? Why don't you listen?" Nan Nan had somehow sneaked up behind us and was now tugging at my ear.
Yu Chengfei was so startled he almost fell off the steps. He said in shock, "Nan Nan, when did you come out?"
Nan Nan thought for a moment and said, "Just when you said 'beat drums and set off firecrackers'. Why do you need to beat drums and set off firecrackers? What happy event haven't you told me about?"
I saw Yu Chengfei's face turn pale, but he still tried to cover it up by saying, "I was thinking about the day we get married. I want to beat drums and set off firecrackers, and hire a long motorcade to bring you home!" The reason I said Yu Chengfei's words were foolish is that, many years later, on the day Nan Nan got married, he really did beat drums and set off firecrackers. There was indeed a long motorcade slowly moving through the streets of Beiyuan City. Everything was perfect, except the groom wasn't Yu Chengfei.
On that day, Yu Chengfei cried like a grandson mourning his grandfather.
"Really?" Nan Nan smiled brightly and kissed Yu Chengfei on the cheek. "Honey, you're so sweet. You promised, you must marry me."
"Of course," Yu Chengfei said, patting his chest. "You wouldn't dare marry anyone else, would you?" His face, however, looked terrible, though he forced a smile.
"Hehe, I wouldn't dare!" Nan Nan hugged Yu Chengfei's neck affectionately. "And you can't marry anyone else either."
While they were doing all this mushy stuff, Nan Nan's other hand was still tugging my ear.
"Nan Nan jie, let go of my ear," I said, almost in tears.
"Still calling me Nan Nan jie?!" Nan Nan glared at me. "Kid, do you want to go to Thailand?"
"Nan Nan jie, listen to me!" I quickly said, "I feel closer calling you Nan Nan jie. And if you're my sister, I can openly stand up for you if Yu Ge ever bullies you."
Nan Nan immediately saw the sense in this and started laughing. She let go of my ear and said, "Hehe, that makes sense. Good little brother, you must stand by your sister's side. If Yu Chengfei ever bullies me, you have to stand up for me!"
I patted my chest and said, "No problem. If he dares to bully you, I'll make sure he doesn't get away with it!" I thought I was really good at adapting to the situation. It was a shame I wasn't in politics.
"Good job, Haozi, betraying me like this!" Yu Chengfei cursed. "You're a traitor!"
"Don't insult my brother!" Nan Nan grabbed Yu Chengfei's ear. "From now on, Haozi and I are together!"
I pounced on Yu Chengfei, pretending to be vicious. "Don't bully my sister!"
The three of us laughed together. The sunset's warm glow enveloped us, making everything feel warm and cozy.
