A friend in need

A friend in need

Have you ever read so fast, like your whole life depended on it?

I did that for 12 minutes, without engaging the mind implant to prevent the poor aid from exploding in my head. Then I marked a dozen Words, and wrote them in my blood on the last page, and sent the book to Ordella's hands.

Just in time, as two large Necron fleets arrived, with a dozen C'tan Shards in front to soak up any damage I could throw at them.

Trazyn the Infinite wasn't here, but Orikan the Diviner was, having switched sides and deserted his old Dynasty to join the entourage of the Silent King.

I raised one finger, and the chronomancer tensed up, raising his staff to defend himself from a future threat. Yeah, this won't go so easy, this time.

Time to test my other trick.

I drew a small Breath, and touched Trazyn's head inside the tesseract, while mentally arranging the right Words to transfer the C'tan Yoke to me.

A blinding light erupted from the dimensional well that led to the Weapon, most likely a sign of the ancient Weapon activating for one of the wolfmen inside the Lock.

No time to wait, as the Necron fleet drew closer at high speed, plowing though the minefield like it didn't matter. Without giving an outward sign, 40000 Nova Mines detonated at once among the Necron ships, reducing their number to only 42 Tomb Ship battleships, and a few hundred Cruisers melted to slag. The escorts had evaporated completely.

A red Annihilation Beam streaked across the void and obliterated the Defense Laser and the asteroid it was placed on, while thousands of Necron soldiers and Constructs, including walker tanks and antigrav Monoliths teleported on the surface of Sortiarius to engage the Iron Warriors.

There were things I rarely saw, like the Seraptek Heavy Construct and Canoptek Doomstalker as well as the Triarch Stalker and several anti-air vehicles called an Obelisk

led by a Catacomb Command Barge , with a Necron Overlord inside.

Another dozen C'tan Shards appeared to protect the remaining Necron ships, and two of them even standing on the hull of the largest battleship.

One looked a lot like Zath, in his original flaming form of Nyadra'zatha, while the other could only be Mag'ladroth, the Void Dragon. The Dragon's eyes were still closed, but that didn't mean much for a C'tan, especially one not broken into Shards.

'Surrender now, and you may keep your ships and your lives, such as they still are.' I sent towards the Silent King, but the Necron king refused to answer, instead using my transmission to pinpoint my location and point his staff at the Singularity.

I fell into the tesseract with my entire ship and emerged in a different spot, with the Void Claw ready to fire. This time, the Blade went for broke and used the big gravity beam, catching a dozen Tomb Ships in the firing cone and even a C'tan Shard, who broke into little symbols and flew back to its Tesseract Vault.

We vanished again, dodging a Transdimensional Thunderbolt and several Annihilation Beams, while the Necron Fleet was bombarded by an even stronger attack by my own C'tan allies. Shockwaves, maelstroms and antimatter meteors fell upon the Necron ships, but only a few ships exploded, as if C'tan powers had become too weak.

The Void Dragon had moved an arm, and blocked the rest of the bombardment in a radius around the Silent King's ship.

The remaining 30 Tomb Ships drew closer to enter the immunity circle, and they broke through the minefield and into the chained asteroids like a tank through a chain fence.

Oh well. I tried. But my ship would be useless now. I drew a big Breath that made the sun twinkle, and stepped outside as a giant Blackstone golem the size of two battleships combined. Glorianna-class, not the tiny ones of the Imperial Navy.

Jumping lightly, I stepped on the Necron army fighting and massacring the Iron Warriors, then collected Perturabo in my dimensional pocket as well.

'I am ready, my lord. I will Speak on your word.' Ordella whispered on the Sounding Board, and despite not using her voice, the menace of Enuncia was there, in the back of my mind.

'Even less of your people will live, if you surrender now. I will not offer thrice.' I sent towards the Silent King, who raised a hand from his Dias to halt the Necron fleet.

'A mere human, even with the Breath of Gods in his hands, cannot hope to stop me. Where is your confidence coming from, Pef Lancefire?' the Silent King answered with his own question.

'Ask the Diviner, Orikan. Is there anyone who fought me and lived?' I replied with a careless tone, then stepped on the Command Barge and whatever Necron Overlord was in command of the insect-sized army around my titanic feet. Probably also crushed thousands of innocent Warriors and Constructs, and maybe a few Iron Warriors that were engaged in melee.

'That stolen Blackstone and your golem will not even tire the Void Dragon. And your little tamed wolves won't be of use anymore. Wake, Mag'ladroth ! Squash the vermin that pollutes my Nexus.' the Silent King ordered in a confident tone.

"Transfer primary Yoke functions to Pef Lancefire!" I Enounced out loud, and the Void Dragon halted with a Tachyon Arrow in his hand. That had been close. But it worked!

The Star God opened an eye to observe his new master, then laughed. "Yggra is still around then. That lunatic! Makes me wonder why the Ancient trusted a mortal instead of..."

"Be so kind and release Zath from the Dias, and the blue Shards as well." I ordered my Dragon while shifting into space to stand at his side, facing the Necron fleet and their captured Shards.

My other allied C'tan Shards formed into a wolfpack around me, with Zath growing as large as my golem for some reason. Likely to maintain an image.

"Wolves? You were reduced to animals by this human of yours, Zath?" The Void Dragon laughed gently as his powers liberated the captive Shards and they drew at the side, perhaps surprised at their own newfound freedom.

"It's a form of celebration, Void Dragon. The humans call it Wolftime. For that Divine Wolf being born behind you." Zath grumbled in a reluctant voice, just as Lash jumped out from the golden light and shook off burned fur and bits of charred necrodermis.

"I stayed as long as I could, Captain. But the merger has reached its peak now, and it's not safe anymore. Did you intend to merge that Wolf Primarch with Canis? Because it was a genial move, I admit. None of us expected this to work." Lash commented in awe at my undeclared genius.

I could deny it, but nobody would belive me. Too much luck could be a curse sometimes. So I just shrugged and pointed at the Silent King and his two Triarchs awaiting their fate on the Dias of Dominion. "What do you want to do with this guy?"

The other Zath in his flaming form appeared before me, and stared into my soul. "You offered him his life twice before, and he refused. Why not end it?"

The Silent King stood up and jumped off his Dias, and his fellow Triachs joined him at the sides. "Am I to be judged by you, Pef Lancefire? You're not even a Man of Gold, like your ancestors. What do you know of biotranferance?"

I brought Perturabo next to me, as the closest thing to a Man of Gold around. "Primarch, we have a problem to solve. What do we do with the Silent King, and the Necrons that follow him?"

Unlike the Necron King, Perturabo understood too well which side the die was cast. He had been in the same situation, when I captured him, after all.

"The utility of a Necron ally would be great, Warmaster. If a measure of trust could be obtained." the Primarch spoke in a level voice, as if he wasn't fighting a Necron army just minutes ago.

I held my hand out, and displaced the Staff of the Silent King into my golem's palm. It looked miniscule, but it held so much power.

"The crux of the problem is biotransference. The robot guy wants to return to his flesh and bones, as do most of his fellow robots with a modicum of sapience left. I can make it happen. The big Dragon can do it too." I spoke as an additional argument.

The Void Dragon tugged at his Yoke, but it was meant to hold a God. "We consumed the Necrontyr souls 60 million years ago, Lord Lancefire. They cannot be returned." the Star God replied in a polite tone.

I nodded. All true, but irrelevant. There was a higher truth. There were things in this universe that defied causality. Especially the right Words.

"Plead your case, Silent King. You have until the Big Bad Wolf comes out from his Ascension. After that, it will be too late." I urged the Necron King, who glanced behind me with his green, soulless eyes.

"You can use Enuncia. With enough power to tame the Void Dragon!" he noted in a wise voice. That was true, but I cheated and simply shifted a minute part of the Dragon's Yoke towards me, instead of crafting an entire Yoke from nothing. My throat and teeth would have exploded if I tried to control a God with a few Words.

"In the beginning, was the Word. And, I've been told I am a superb wordsmith. Right, Lash?" I asked a bit rhetorical.

"Grrrr. It was a joke! Plus, you're not a strong Pariah, Captain. Maybe one of your girls...of course. Always with a plan inside another plan!" Lash muttered, then realized I did have a Silent Sister able to speak the right words.

"If you can reverse the damned biotranference, we will be your allies, Lord Lancefire. Or at least those Necrontyr that will obey their King." The Silent King proclaimed in a loud voice, and his Lychguards and Triachs bowed towards me.

Good enough, I guess. The golden glow behind me became a furnace, and a new God emerged into the universe. Or maybe he was always here, waiting to be born. For a God is just a dog turned to 11.
