Chapter 27

Kaguya opened her eyes and flinched a little before her eyes quickly adjusted. She blinked a couple times, confused that she wasn’t in her room at the main house or in the dorm. After a moment, she looked around and found she was in a hospital room on a bed, and next to her was Samantha in another bed. Souma and Thea were asleep against the wall, his arm around Thea and her head on his shoulder.

With a small smile towards them, she focused her attention on her body. She was sore, and she couldn’t move her hands very well, but other than that she didn’t feel as bad as she was expecting. Her eyes went to Samantha and frowned, knowing that the girl had been low on healing energy considering her slowed healing rate.

She lifted a hand and saw it was wrapped up really well, and shook her head. “I was so stupid,” she mumbled to herself. Then she reached over and put her hand on Samantha’s, surprised when it caused Samantha to stir and opened her eyes.

Samantha grinned sleepily. “I could get used to that,” she mumbled, yawning as she reached over and put a hand on Kaguya’s arm. “You’re still hurt, but I’m bone dry now. It’ll be days before I have anymore healing.”

“You shouldn’t have used any on me in the first place,” Kaguya scolded her. “You were in worse shape just a few days ago. You needed that healing a lot more than I did.”

Samantha shook her head. “Nah, your concussion was really bad. Your brain was starting to swell, and that could have been deadly. And one of your ribs was at risk of snapping and puncturing a lung, which would also have been deadly.”

“And you were stabbed in the lung,” Kaguya pointed out. But Samantha just shook her head and waved her hand. Kaguya sighed and relaxed. “I guess there’s no point arguing about it now. You’ve already done it.”

“Exactly!” Samantha grinned widely before her expression slipped to something more solemn. “Kaguya, there’s no way I could have sat here and not tried to heal you. You’re way too important to me. I love you, remember? I don’t want to see you hurt, and especially not like this.”

Kaguya shook her head, her cheeks warm as she looked down at her lap. “This isn’t that unusual for me, Samantha. This is the worst I’ve ever been hurt, but it’s not like I’ve never been concussed or had broken bones.”

“Which is bullshit! No one should have to just get used to being hurt like this!” Samantha scowled as she moved closer to Kaguya, wincing a little but ignoring it to get as close as possible. “I’m gonna kill that bastard.” Kaguya turned to her, prepared to defend her father, but was stopped by Samantha kissing her deeply. It didn’t take her long to forget what she’d been about to say, her attention completely on Samantha’s mouth. A hand ran over her chest and rested on her stomach, and then a throat clearing made Samantha pull away.

Kaguya blushed darker, closing her eyes and pretending her brother didn’t just watch her get kissed like that.

“I’m glad you guys are feeling better,” Thea said. “Souma and I are going to go get something to eat.”

“Huh? Why? And hey, why’d you interrupt them? It was getting good!”

“You’re such a pervert. That’s your sister sitting there!”

“I mean, that’s a little weird, but like… It was still two girls kissing. All I had to do was pretend that they weren’t your sister and my sister swapping spit. They were just two random girls making out in front of me, and that’s hot.”

“Ugh, you’re impossible!” Thea exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air. “I’m starting to question why I like you so much when you act like this half the time!”

Souma grinned. “Because of my rugged good looks?” he asked, wagging his brows up and down. “You like my wit too, I’m sure. And I’m an amazing kisser!”

“I don’t want to hear about you kissing my sister,” Samantha groaned, covering her eyes.

“See? That’s the correct response!” Thea pointed out to Souma, who just shrugged and grinned at Kaguya sheepishly. His sister just shook her head at him, and pretended he wasn’t there anymore as she leaned into Samantha’s shoulder to hide her still bright red face.

“Fine, fine,” Souma said finally, sighing. “I guess Thea and I are headed for some food. Don’t do anything that I wouldn’t do!”

“Which apparently isn’t much!” Samantha called as they left the room. She huffed, and Kaguya peeked to see that Samantha was pouting. “Stupid siblings and their interruptions,” she heard Samantha mumbling under her breath, making her smile. She took a deep breath, and then lifted her bandaged hand to move Samantha’s face.

“I suppose we can continue, since they’re gone now,” Kaguya murmured before closing the distance to kiss Samantha. Just before they connected, the door to their room opened and an older man entered. He rose a brow at the two of them, and Samantha quickly dropped back with a wince.

“Uh, hey there, Pops,” she said with a small smile. “There’s a perfectly good explanation for why I’m not in the Thomas infirmary, I swear!”

“I know what happened,” the man said with a nervous smile. He turned to Kaguya and hesitated a moment before he moved a seat from the corner of the room closer and sat down. “You are Kaguya Kazegami, Takeda’s heir despite him having an older son, correct?”

“Yes, sir,” Kaguya told him quietly, gripping the blanket on her lap. She wasn’t sure what he wanted from her, but when she felt a hand cover hers and forced it to open so that they could entwine, she figured it didn’t matter as long as Samantha was there to support her. “Mr. Tho-”

“Milo,” the man interrupted, his smile becoming less nervous as he looked at their hands briefly before moving back up to Kaguya’s face. “You don’t need to be formal with me. It’s a bit of a pain to be called formally by my child’s partner, isn’t it? I’d like to think that, should you two be together for a long time, we can also be on friendly terms.”

“Not that you’re used to the idea of me being with a woman,” Samantha teased him with a smirk.

“That is true. And really, if I hadn’t seen how faithfully she stayed with you while you were asleep, I would have been even more upset with you being with a Kazegami woman,” Milo admitted. “The reason I’m here is to let you know that as long as you and Samantha see each other in a favorable light, together or not, you’ll have a place with us.”

Kaguya could feel her eyes burning with unshed tears, and nearly held them at bay until Milo stood and stepped closer to pull her into a hug. She couldn’t fight them at all after that.
