Chapter 8: The Price You Pay

Xochi sat in her study going over some texts about the hero Aeolus that she had received from Lucian. The religion built around the only name to survive the blinding had always intrigued her, and to find out that one of the World Kings actually hailed from that time period was a pleasant surprise in itself. Her concentration was broken by yet another explosion which seemed to be more commonplace now that her daughter was of age. Nevertheless she figured she'd go see what caused this particular outburst, sighing deeply Xochi stood and made her way outside.

Xochi emerged from the palace to witness a brilliant display of multi-colored balls of fire being launched into the air and exploding into various shapes and patterns. It seemed like the entire palace staff was gathered outside watching. "What's going on?" Xochi asked Kay who was standing near the door enjoying the show. "Oh my Queen, I didn't realize you were there. Please forgive me." "It's fine. What's happening here?" "Well it's Xtabay your highness, she just received news from the physician." "What news?" "Oh, I don't think it's my place to say." "Out with it!" Xochi barked. Startled Kay answered. "Well it seems she is with child and she is celebrating." Xochi's eyes narrowed. "How?" She asked under her breath before she hastily made her way back inside. A visible look of confusion washed over Kay's face.

Xochi barged into her study and quickly put away her books and notes on the hero Aeolus. "Piasa!" She called out. The room fell silent, not even the boom of the explosions could be heard. The symbol that was burnt into Xochi's neck began to tingle slightly causing Xochi to rub it. "Quite the display." The silence was broken by Piasa's sultry voice. Xochi turned to find Piasa sitting in her chair facing the window. "This wasn't supposed to happen, Piasa. This wasn't part of the plan." Piasa chuckled. "Are you really complaining to the envoy of chaos that a plan didn't work out as intended? You're adorable little Xochi." The chair was empty. Xochi whirled around to find Piasa examining the trinkets that lined the top of the fireplace. "They weren't supposed to be able to produce children but somehow Xtabay is pregnant! How is that possible?" Xochi asked. "Oh I do love a little drama, who's the daddy?" The amusement in Piasa's voice angered Xochi. "Mul." She answered. Piasa thought for a second. "The boy the crow spoke to?" "Yes." Replied Xochi. "Oh, I see. Well you're going to have to kill the child, wait for it to be born of course there's no way to harm it while it's inside Xtabay, not that she'd let you. And I suggest you kill that boy and any other children he's associated with. Cousins, siblings, nieces or nephews and the like." Xochi remained silent, staring into nothing with a blank expression. Piasa was behind her now and she leaned in and whispered into Xochi's ear before vanishing. "That's the price you pay for power little Xochi."
