Chapter 1: The Serpent princess

Bloom 800 Lucach

The brothers watched in amazement as the entirety of the Goserra forest was engulfed In crimson flames. Impressed, Xolo let out a whistle. "She's going to be ready long before the next bloom." "Indeed. Mother will be pleased with her progress." Camazotz agreed while watching the various animals and creatures flee the burning trees. Not long after, a giant pair of wings with black contour feathers and red remiges breached the smoldering canopy. The wings belonged to a huge white rattlesnake covered in a black and red plumage. The feathered serpent spewed from its maw scarlet flames that washed over a small part of the forest that wasn't already set ablaze. Xolo took a deep breath and called out in a loud thunderous voice. "Okay Tabs, that's enough." The serpent flew over to the two of them and shifted into a little girl before falling out of the sky and landing in front of them. "Did I do good?" A young Xtabay asked. Her eyes not yet taking their human shape. Xolo patted her head. "You sure got some power Tabs, that's for sure." Camazotz gave her a stern look. "But your control needs work." He pointed over to a small bird pecking the ground. "Your quarry escaped the woods. As well as a slew of other animals and creatures. I surmise that you failed to track the bird and in your frustration decided to scorch the entire area. You need to reign in that temper Xtabay. A cool head is more valuable in a battle than unbridled fury." Xtabay frowned at her brother's words. Xolo kneeled down so he was face to face with his sister. "But listen kid. A little fury can go a long way in a fight. So it's good to hang on to a bit." "Indeed." Camazotz added. Xtabay's frown persisted. She looked over at the bird and formed a scarlet ball of fire in her hand. She launched it at the bird, incinerating it where it stood and stomped off towards the palace in a huff. "Children." Camazotz commented. "Yeah." Xolo replied following after her.

Back at the palace, Xtabay burst through the palace gates prompting her attendant Kay to approach her. "Is everything alright Your Highness?" Xtabay ignored her and continued to march up the palace steps. Her brothers walked through the gates soon after. "Is everything alright Your Majesties?" Kay asked. "Yeah. She's just throwing one of her tantrums." Xolo replied. "Oh dear. Well at least it's a mild one this time." Kay commented. "Indeed." Camazotz added. Xtabay stormed into her mother's war room as the meeting she was having with her generals concluded. "Mother!" Xtabay's voice echoed through the room. "What's control mean?" Some of the generals chuckled to themselves as they exited the room. Queen Xochi smiled at her daughter who didn't see the amusement in her question. Xochi beckoned for her daughter to sit on her lap. Xtabay complied. "What makes you ask such a question my dear?" Xochi asked while beginning to braid her daughter's hair. "Camazotz said my control is lacking. And something about being furry. And that's not good on the battlefield." Xochi laughed. "It isn't funny mother!" Xtabay protested. "I need to know what control is so I can lack it no longer." Xochi kissed her daughter on her head. "My dear, sweet, child. Your brother speaks wise words. But just between us, when it comes to you on the battlefield, control isn't something you yourself require." Xtabay smiled at her mother. "Really?" Xochi smiled back. "Yes. When you are on the battlefield I want you to only do one thing." "What is it?" Xtabay asked with an endearing light in her eyes. Her mother hugged her, slowly stroked the back of her head, and whispered softly. "Burn it all away."
