Wolf and Orphan
Feeling Free

Feeling Free

She glared back at Dimitri with a side eye, curious about what and how any of this was even remotely possible. He appeared to be any ordinary middle-aged man who seemed entirely human in her eyes. What she liked to understand is whether the new soul that had taken over her recently departed body was the best candidate to look after the child. To be precise, alone. She paused for a moment to consider whether if it was appropriate for him to answer all of her questions.

She closes her eyes and puffs out enough air from her chest to fill a balloon. Looking around, she remembered a group of humans and beasts in Twain's village, who mentioned that this divinity lived in a horrible place. With her own eyes, she could see that they had no idea what they were talking about.

It appeared to be a typical venue. One is filled with various types of flowers and tall and small bushy trees. With a nice, smooth walking path above a small creek, among other things. Dimitri was followed by the wolf, who passed the water to a round wooden table. She looked around and saw ordinary animals, regular beasts, and humans across the water. Both young and old. However, it appears that they are too preoccupied with their own business to notice the wolf.

It was kinda refreshing to be able to walk out in the open like this, there was no need to cover her fur, ears, or tail from anyone. No one here cared if a purplish blue wolf pass by.

She looked up at the sky. Feeling the breeze push her fur along with the rays of the sun. There were more flying-type beasts gliding and playing in the sky. She focused her vision, watching their huge smiles as the wind was blowing through the colorful feathers. They didn't appear to be afraid of being shot down with magic or other weapons at any time.

All of these wonderful sensations that she had never had enough time to acknowledge managed to bring her so much joy. It was enough to bring her to tears. The warmth, the breeze, and, most importantly, the soft green grass beneath her feet. Something she could never do without leaving a trail for some cheap trick hunters to follow.

The weight she had always been carrying ever since she was left to fend for herself felt as if it were lifting off from her shoulders. She felt somewhat lighter than she had a few minutes before, as if there had never been anything there in the first place. The hassle of hiding and attempting to escape is over and done with. It was something she can finally leave behind. This was something even the prince could never fully accomplish. The feeling of finally being free from everything was incredible.

The wolf dashed forward, arms wide open, leaping full force into the steady flown crystal water. She smiled at Dimitri as she drew her head out of the water. She unintentionally displayed her fangs toward him. Something beasts aren't supposed to do to humans, it mainly frightens them away. “Many thanks!” She yelled at Dimitri with ardor. “Many thanks!” The wolf howled loudly, which she had never been able to do freely before. The other residents heard her howl and joined in. Creating their distinct sound; the humans mimicked her howl.

They all sounded so happy. That world took our freedom away, and Dimitri was capable of giving it back to us, in return for our body, back in our old world. Witnessing it all, Dimitri joined in on the howl. Catching her breath, she swam back to shore, where the middle age looking man named Dimitri waited with his arm extended out towards the wolf, who still wanted to play in the water.

It didn’t matter if they were human or beast, He will never get tired of seeing the smiles on their faces carved out in front of him. He had no idea how much pain and destruction he had caused simply by transferring some souls, but it felt good to see the damage and fear being lifted from his children.

“Ms. Jayne, Please tell me you didn't think this place was going to rain fire. With meatless humans and beasts crawling around on the ground, bones decay into dust that covers the entire land. With a masochist running the place… Did you?” A towel appeared above him as the all-powerful human-looking old man flicked his fingers. The towel hung over the wolf like a flock of white birds, draping her from shoulder to shoulder.

“I apologize for disappointing you, Ms. Jayne. Most of this is just a rumor. The last person I brought here wouldn't stop crying and talking about how he wanted to be tortured for all eternity. I mean, come on. I live in a place like this, but I won't confirm or deny the masochist aspect. That is my private life, so get that thought out of your head.”

The wolf nodded, her head cocked. “I never considered how this world might look, I just recalled some words, I had heard some stories about this place, with the torture you inflict on the poor souls you selected. But I'd never heard of the story about the father of Beast, Dimitri, being a masochist before. You're now instilling ideas in my mind. But, more importantly, how did you find out what my name was?”

Dimitri placed his thumb and pointer finger above his eyes on his temple. He flicked his entire wrist with his left hand, casting the wooden table set from before to appear right under a tree near the mirror. Dragging his feet, he slumped onto the softly patted chair, muttering a prayer under his breath. Jayne stood silently on the sidelines, unsure what to say. Dimitri's gleaming skin had faded to a pale, sickly hue.

“Don't end up like her.” The only soul capable of turning Dimitri into a dying ghost was one he brought over and regretted killing so many years ago. After a few deep meditations on unintentional trauma from his past, he looked at Jayne and motioned for her to join him in facing the mirror.

“Your time is up, Ms. Jayne; you agreed to give someone else a second chance. Making you into something more than just a soul passing on to the next life. You'll get to see everything until the end. But first things first. We need to see their previous life to figure out who this mysterious soul is and why they were chosen to transmigrate to the new world and into your old body. And by everyone, I do mean everyone.”
