"......"
"Brother Wu, you are looking a little pale." Baixiao looked over. "Shall I call for someone to fetch you a glass of wine? Attendant, bring me two jars of your finest wine!" The young master's words were drowned out by a thunderous roar of applause.
Everyone's attention turned towards the front of the room, where there stood a dark silhouette atop a wooden platform. It was a man with hands clasped behind his back. His appearance was plain, with black garments bearing stitched golden branches. The man’s sudden appearance brought with it a second wave of applause.
The man smiled and began speaking. “Fellow daoists, my name is Bai Yinchuan. I express my thanks to all of you for attending our humble auction."
"Tonight will be an assortment of merit laws, sealed inheritances, martial wills, cultivation pills, and even dao treasures up for bidding. The auction will be divided into three segments, the preliminary auction, the alchemy conference, and finally the inheritance auction."
"The preliminary auction will consist of martial techniques, merit laws, and sealed inheritances. Parties will be able to openly bid on items, using spirit stones or merit points. After that will be the alchemy conference. The pills concocted during the alchemy conference and its subsequent competitions will be auctioned off to members of the audience. We then will close out the night with the inheritance auction. You can expect the most sought-after treasures of the night to appear during this time, so please look forward to that."
Without time for pause, the host motioned to a nearby attendant, who approached the podium, revealing a glass container containing a mass of colored branches intertwined in a spherical shape.
Fermented Wine Thistle.
"Measuring roughly three inches in height or across, with green and red branches folded over a mulberry root, it is a common ingredient in many popular dishes, and a supplementary material in pill concocting. Fermented Wine Thistle can only be found in the plum blossom valley. Its green bristles are sweet and crunchy, rich in nutrients, and the red bristles can be crushed sprinkled onto dishes for a salted, brine taste. As everyone knows, the ingredient's greatest advantage is its medicinal properties. When crushed into a powder, Fermented Wine Thistle can be used to quickly clot wounds and stabilize infections. The starting bid is 300 spirit stones."
"This will be a great aid in surviving calamities. I will open with 300 spirit stones."
"Bid, 310 spirit stones!"
"I hope that you lot will give this old man some face. Bid 330 spirit stones!!"
"I raise to 331 spirit stones."
"You fu-
...
Before long, the bidding war for the Fermented Whine Thistle had even reached the one thousand spirit stones mark. The crowd of onlookers, Sean Wu and Baixiao Tiangu included, watched with abated breath as the bidding war between competing factions grew ever more intense. 1001 Spirit Stones... 1007... 1031... Several broken bones later and after three people had to be carried out on a stretcher, the Fermented Wine Thistle was eventually sold to (起重机颈部折断) Otherworldly Crane Sect's Long Feitan for 1412 spirit stones.

The auctioneer allowed the room a moment or two to settle down before continuing. "What I have next for you all, is something very rare. In all my years hosting auctions, I have only seen it auctioned four times."
Cloud-Wreathed Hanging Gardens*.
"Each of these is carefully crafted out of folded clouds and glass blown for three hundred and thirty consecutive days. Tonight, we have not silver quality, but a star grade treasure up for grabs. Everyone, please take a look for yourselves." From behind the host, an orange and white spotted object appeared. It was about the size of a thumb, and floated in the air, drifting at a leisurely pace. Audible gasps could be heard from the audience. A koi fish slowly circled the host, floating in midair.
To Sean's left, a faint sobbing could be heard. Glancing over, Sean saw a heavily tattooed cultivator, wearing a scarlet robe with animal skin grafted onto his forearms and black markings on his face. The demonic sect elder was holding onto a club with multiple jagged spikes and was sobbing loudly, with tears streaming down his cheeks. "Beautiful, simply beautiful. I have never seen anything more profound."
Sean made a strange face.
[What do you mean beautiful? I don't see a damn thing!]
Baixiao Tiangu was sitting upright, with crossed arms and a satisfied expression. "It is good to see a treasure such as this show up so early. My family owns two, one of which is locked away in the immemorial vault that can only be accessed by clan elders."
The host continued. "Flowers formed of cold winter air, fruits woven from condensed nimbus; this is a garden imperceptible to the five senses. Meditating inside for an incense time every day will greatly improve one's spiritual sense and cleanse the mind of inner demons. The gardens cannot be left outside for longer than half a day, or it will disintegrate and become indistinguishable from the surrounding atmosphere. The fish in the pond only need to be fed with brine once every 28 days. We will start the bidding at 2700 spirit stones!!"
"I must have this treasure by any means necessary! None dare to compete with me, or you will face the wrath of my Wei Clan! I open with 2700 spirit stones!!"
"The Wei Clan are worth less than the dirt beneath my feet. Bid, 2720 spirit stones."
"Bastard, you dare!"
"The Wei Clan swing from vines and drag their knuckles across the ground. I bid 2753 spirit stones."
"You-!!"

A gust of wind swept through the twin doors of the auction house. Inside the building, hundreds of auction hall staff and hired labor frantically shuffled to and from the main hall, hauling large stone cauldrons and iron woks. These workers expertly weaved through the dense crowd, loudly shouting for visitors and guests to move out of the way. The workers were on a strict deadline. Once the first half of the main event auction concluded, the alchemy conference would commence following a brief intermission.
The sheer scale of the festival meant the auction hall could not accommodate the hundreds of thousands of attendees into one hall. Even with the large numbers of guests filling up both auction rooms on the upper and lower floors, there were many more that turned their attention elsewhere, to places such as the market square and gambling parlors.
Not everyone visiting was a cultivator after rich resources, worldly treasures, or cultivation manuals. The thousands of pill alchemists in attendance were only concerned with trading materials, showing off their creations, or concocting pills. The initial auction was of no concern to them. Despite the alchemy conference being eclipsed in sheer magnitude when compared to the auction hall, it was still one of the main attractions of the night.
Within a matter of breaths, the hundreds of workers had already managed to erect a 300 foot stone pillar, with the engraved characters spelling out, '106th Consecutive Year Since the Saint Devil's Ascension, Bai Feng Auction House. 51st Alchemy Conference'. A number of guests had formed into four separate lines, converging at a large open area, surrounded by wooden stands. This open area was filled with thousands of stone cauldrons, all spaced 20-heads apart from one another. Beside each cauldron were a mortar and pestle, a sealed rectangular box, and a table lined with various herbs and medicinal fragrances.
Mu Yanbei stood in line behind 300 other attendees, many of them with commoners with no or unremarkable cultivation bases. Contrary to the auction hall, where guests regularly fought for seats nearing the viewing area, the alchemy conference required their guests to reserve seats on a first come, first serve basis. Attendees were strictly prohibited from bullying or snatching seats through means of cultivation base or background.
It goes without saying that like many places with rules and regulations that enforce equal opportunity and equality, there is always a method to use one's affluence or backing to come out ahead. However Mu Yanbei was not at a level that he could request preferential treatment. That ws a courtesy reserved for the heads of various families and sect elders.
Hence, the young master was simply another face in the crowd. It would not be long before it was his turn to reserve a seat, so Mu Yanbei simply took this time to internally rehearse his provocations and taunts to the other families' young masters in the meantime.
