The werewolves howled in pain as the magical acid ate at them. The Acolyte’s size and the Sorcerer’s spell couldn’t save them, however, as the acid finally brought them down. It wasn’t much, on the face of it, but this ability would be a game changer in long fights, I could already see that.

Darting forward, I coated my fist in that acidic green power. Frostmane had done a good job on this warrior, but there was no reason to just let him have all the fun. My fist made good contact, and I could see the warrior looking at me with new, hate-filled eyes as the acid burned.

The white wolf chuffed at my sudden appearance beside him. “Finished playing with the other ones, little bird?” When I stuck out my tongue at him, he just chuffed again, before snapping his jaws on the werewolf’s leg, and throwing him back to the ground again.

Vestele strode forward, and smacked the werewolf warrior with her morningstar. The power of her new gauntlets proved itself, as the decidedly non-silver weapon hit with the full force of a silvered one. “Let’s finish this up, and I’ll heal you all.”

The werewolf in front of the twins struggled, but couldn’t break free of the enchantment binding him. Meanwhile, the second warrior managed to evade both Frostmane’s jaws and my kick as he rose to his feet. A slash of his sword cut Frostmane’s side where the breastplate didn’t cover, adding another bleeding wound on the white wolf’s hide.

Siora’s Attack Roll (FW1): 1d20+11 = 24 (Hit)

Damage: 1d6+1 = 6 (Piercing, Silver)

Siora, not wanting to use any more spells on a fight that was as good as won, brought another silver arrow to the string of her bow, and fired it at the werewolf. She grinned as the wolf snarled in pain. “We’ll finish in just a sec, don’t worry, sister.”

Maura’s Attack (FW1): 1d20+9 = 13 (Miss)

Maura brought up her crossbow, and fired at the warrior. Unfortunately, she was not very accurate, but that was most likely due to her being a mage rather than a warrior herself. The bolt skipped off the chain shirt he wore.

The acid from my previous attacks was enough to finish off Frostmane’s werewolf, the wretched creature writhing as the acid claimed him. I turned, and flew over to the final warrior, my fist once more wreathed in acidic green light. I hit him just behind the shoulder blade as I moved into a position to try and distract him if he managed to break free from Siora’s spell.

Frostmane’s Attack (FW2): 1d20+15 = 21 (Hit)

Frostmane, however, made sure that there was no need for such things. His jaws closed around the werewolf’s head, and practically ripped it from his shoulders! Panting with the exertion of the fight, the white wolf shook his head. “That was no easy fight. The foes are getting stronger.”

I recoiled from that blade the moment I touched it, as my skin burned from the merest touch. Hissing, I stepped back from the blade, and said, “Sorry, the metal in that blade reacts badly to me. Someone else will have to carry it.” Siora nodded, and slipped the dagger into Frostmane’s bag.

This set of enchanted bracers are enchanted to provide a +3 Enhancement bonus to AC.

There were only a couple other interesting pieces that we hadn’t seen before. I replaced my old bracers with these ones, and Siora and Vestele switched their less powerful rings for the more powerful rings. The rest went into Frostmane’s bags, with all the other things we’d picked up but couldn’t use.

Vestele pulled out the wand we found earlier, and spent a few moments healing our wounds. As she returned the wand to her bag, she looked to the rest of us. “Should we check around the room? If this is where everyone’s been sleeping, we might find something useful.”

Siora’s Search Check: 1d20+20 = 37

Siora nodded. “Might as well. This isn’t a permanent lair, but they may have brought things from home when they came to Moonwood. They probably would have some trade goods, at least. And there may be things taken from anyone they captured.”

With that said, the Beguiler began to look around. Searching the room took several minutes, but after Maura pointed out where the Priest in charge of this group slept, Siora quickly uncovered a hidden compartment in the floor, a rough-hewn hole in the floor covered with a large, flat stone and some furs. Shifting the stone, she grinned. “Hello there. We’ve got a sneaky stash!”

Moving up next to her, I saw a cloth-wrapped bundle and a sack in the hole. Opening the bag, I saw that it was full of platinum coins. I handed it to Vestele, who started counting the coins and sorting them. Looking back to the hole, Siora opened up the bundle, and I smiled.

Inside was a copper chain necklace with a gem inset on it, a choker that looked to be made of electrum and had what looked to be a noble house’s crest engraved upon it (something to do with a griffin and a crown, but I didn’t recognize it), a platinum-colored cloak made of fine cloth, with the same crest, and a platinum necklace inlaid with silver runes. Siora looked up at me, and I just shook my head. None of it was magical, at least as far as I could detect, but all of it would be worth some gold when we got back to civilization.

Siora’s Appraise check: 1d20+9 = 23 (Success)

With a critical eye, the Beguiler checked each of the pieces in turn. “Hmm. Well, it would have been worth more if they were magical, but can’t have everything, I guess. The chain is worth perhaps a hundred and forty gold? The choker is another six sixty. Twenty-one sixty for the cloak, especially if we find the house it belongs to. And another twenty-two fifty for the necklace. Of course, what we’ll actually get from a shopkeeper or fence for them is another thing entirely.”

Vestele chuckled. “You know as well as I do that you’ll use your wiles to trick them out of a bit more coin, perhaps throwing in a tumble to get a better cut. And the coin comes to four hundred platinum pieces exactly, just so you know.”

I nodded. “All right. Frostmane, we’ll slip these things into your pack, and we’ll find someone to offload them to when we get to Northport.”

With the loot accounted for, we began moving back up the hallway. As we moved towards the stairs, I looked to our pet sorceress, and asked, softly, “Maura, you said that the ‘pantry’ is located below, and is guarded. What should we be expecting?”

Maura nodded. “Well, there should be three down there, tending to the pantry and standing watch. Bharmea and Rhirgon are brother and sister, and they are berserkers who hail from the lands to the north and west. I’ve only seen them fighting once, and their greataxes just shredded the beasts we were fighting.”

She took a breath, and said, “Edelin, on the other hand, is another acolyte, like Francis was. She still goes by Edelin, rather than trying to name herself something silly, like Bloodhowl, but she still can channel the Beastlord’s power. I wouldn’t take her lightly.”

I groaned softly. “I grew up with barbarians. They can be fearsome foes when they let the rage take them, becoming stronger and able to shake off wounds that would otherwise fell them. I shudder to think what werewolf barbarians could accomplish.”

Vestele nodded. “And they’ll be backed up with a priest, too, who could try and heal them. That is… less than ideal. Do you think that you and Frostmane can keep them off us while we use our spells to help?”

My eyes met Frostmane’s. He nodded. “It should be fine, though we’ll probably be relying on you, Vestele, for healing. At the very least, we should be able to hold on for a bit.”

I took a breath. “All right then. I doubt that sneaking would accomplish anything for us. Sound carries in these tunnels, and the wolves were howling in pain from the acid. No way they didn’t hear it, even if they didn’t know where it was coming from. They’ll be on guard, for sure.”

Vestele nodded. “Then we’ll have to not hold anything back. Maura, you said that there were three down there, right? That leaves five left. You know where they might be?”

Maura shook her head. “Well, Mistress Rena should have Gylaw, Reinfred, and Fann with her. Gylaw and Reinfred are warriors, and Fann is a sorceress, like I am. They’ll be downstairs, in the ritual chamber, working on the seal around the temple. But the second of the serpent twins? I don’t know where he is.”

I smiled at our little information source. “And how long before the seal falls?”

“If left alone? A few days, maybe a week? Mistress said that her ritual could bring it down by tomorrow night.”

Frostmane chuffed. “Then we’ll just have to stop her before then, give us enough time to rest before the wolves break in and get what they came for.”
