Chapter 2: new life

Chapter 2: new life

I opened my eyes and looked at my surroundings. The area nearby was a medieval setting with cobblestone pavement and stone buildings. The buildings had thatched roofs made from straw and tar. most buildings were only a single story except for the inn she could see which was two stories. looking down the path to the south was a gate and a tall crenellated wall made from stone. To the north a large fire could be seen near a river with a bridge leading to the castle.

From experience I knew that it is wise to pay homage to the god’s upon entering a town, unless you really wanted to be punished. The gods can be spiteful for neglecting them. The most important thing to do when entering a city or town to pray to Hestia at the cities hearth in order to be accepted as a friend. Therefore, I went to the hearth and prayed “Hestia please allow me to stay in the town of stormbridge.” a simple prayer was all that was needed as long as you tried the god’s were happy.

A blue box appeared in front of my eyes

You have received the protection of HestiaUntil you leave the city you will be under the protection of hestia as a friend of the city

Having finished praying I decided to sit down near the hearth and view the changes in my character since the beta. “Display status window” I shouted loudly.

Some skills could be useful such as cooking, identification, bandaging and my language comprehension. The magic is all useless without a magic based class, they will have a huge penalty so I either need to become a mage or forget about the spells. Still using fireball, or even ice bolt as a distraction could be useful depending on the situation. Bandaging was a skill I picked up in the beta due to the lack of players. As a solo mage I needed to be able to heal myself and stop any bleeding whenever I got hit. Without the bandaging skill, any deep cut could cause your health to drop rapidly causing death.

My throat was dry. I hope theres still the starting items in my inventory. In Wing’s of Tomorrow, all basic needs in real life are needed within this world. If you fail to satisfy your needs for food and water you can die or receive status penalties. Water can be collected from any water source including fountains in cities.

“Display inventory window.” within my inventory was the standard 3 bread, and an empty canteen but, what was surprising was the two items that shouldn’t be there. There was an unknown black leather bound tome and a letter. Taking out the letter I saw that it was written by hand. The letter read:

Hello Adventurer,

Thank you for participating in the beta test. As a special reward for playing the beta more than anyone else, we have decided to reward you. Inside your inventory is a Tome. This tome is a rare S class item which once read allows a player to obtain two separate classes.

Regards,

Genesis Interactive

Wide eyed I immediately pulled out the tome and tried to identify it.

Tome Rank S

Immediately standing up with a huge grin on my face I squealed “woo hoo.” the people nearby started staring at me which is really embarrassing, so I darted down another road bright red from embarrassment. I kept running until I saw a fountain. Items in Wing’s to tomorrow come in graded ranks. The lowest rank is Rank F, which would cover any item that is extremely common such as a fox pelt. The grades followed through to A and finally S which was the rarest with exception of uniquely crafted items. This means that with rank S an item would be very difficult to find, it may be unique or require some extremely difficult quest to be awarded the item.

At the fountain I took out my canteen and filled it up then, I sat down to read the tome.

You have unlocked Dual Class

As the message popped up the tome disappeared. acquiring the dual class made I immediately made the decision that since this is a new life, I should create a different life to that I had in the beta. I had decided to play as a character other than a mage as I had done in the beta.

In order to be able to survive in Arendula I needed to make sure I had money for food and equipment. Thinking of this I decided to head to the information guild. Unsure of where the information guild is I looked around for a guard as one does when they are lost. The guard nearby told me that the information guild is down the street to the left and it is the building with the magnifying glass image on its sign.

I followed the guards instructions and found the guild. The guild was noisy with many people walking in and out. I could not tell if they were players or NPCs, Non player characters. The building looked like a 3 story stone and thatch building with wooden tables and chairs out front. The wooden sign of a magnifying glass stating that it was the information guild was attached out front to the awning by chains and was swinging freely.

As I entered the building, I was greeted by a middle aged woman wearing glasses who gave off the air of a librarian. “Welcome to the information guild, how may I help you?”

“Hello I am looking for a temporary job” I shyly replied.

“Over there on the boards, take one. the details are on the paper.” The woman replied coldly pointing to an area crowded by people.

I headed over to the crowd and after a couple minutes made my way to the front. In front of the crowd were three boards with postings for jobs pinned up. The first board had requests for short term temporary jobs, the second board had full and part time jobs, and the third board contained contacts such as building houses. Seeing this I went to the first board for temporary jobs.

The board was covered with jobs categorized roughly by the amount of time required for the job. I went to the section which contained 3-4 hour jobs and selected one. The job stated that I should report to the orphanage for babysitting.

Reward: 15 copper/hour four hours total.

This is your first job. To view jobs please open your jobs menu by saying display jobs.

After closing the windows I went back to the receptionist and asked for directions to the orphanage.

“huh?” she scoffed. “Right next to the temple of Apollo down the street like in every other city”

Bright red like a ripe tomato I stormed out and headed towards the orphanage. Right next to the temple as stated was a large single story thatch building with kids running around out front. walking in the city I saw a young woman and showed her the job request flyer.

“Oh, so you’re here about the babysitting request? i’m glad, we have been really short staffed today because some of our carers are sick. Have you had any experience looking after children before?” asked the woman with a gentle caring voice.

“No never, this is my first job.” I replied shyly.

“Not to worry” the woman said with a smile. “we say babysitting but, really you just need to play with them to keep them out of trouble. I’m Elena by the way.”

“Elyssa” I replied

“Well Elyssa, if you have any trouble come to see me.”

“Thank you Elena.” I replied. due to the beta I found out that if you are polite and friendly to NPCs, they can offer you special quests or jobs as well as deals from merchants or gifts. Although i’m generally shy around players, I don’t have that problem with NPCs.

I spend the next 4 hours at the orphanage playing with the children. We played games like hide and seek, tag, and threw around a ball. At one point I headed inside and we did some painting.

Once the 4 hours were complete, Elena came up to me and said “thank you for helping Elyssa, The children loved you. Please feel free to come back and help out in future.”

“I may just do that” I replied with a smile on my face. It turns out that even a shut in like me really enjoyed spending time with the children too.

“Here is your pay, I gave a little extra since you did such a good job” smiled Elena handing over a bag of copper coins.
