Chapter 2

Seiko

She is staring off into space like she is at a drift with herself. I never really understood her... I tried to and very, very want to. I know little about her, but enough that she allows me to be by her side. Her name is Ricca, Ricca Ira Nastusia; her name means Protective Watcher, who is Stronger than Death. She is eighteen years of age, living day by day in a world she does not really love nor understand. She is an excellent student when she can focus, but when she drifts off it is over. Ricca seems to be obsessed with weaponry and magic. Her spiritual beliefs are beyond most humans' understanding.

Sometimes I wonder if she is really human or some kind of fae. Her skin color is astounding, she looks the color of the moon sometimes, but in the sun... she has a more warm glow. Her figure is perfect; she is not a super skinny model but more of an athletic, dress-wearing figure. Okay, if I said that to any female I am sure they would laugh at or punch me, but I don't know how else to explain it. Her big, wide eyes are piercing to my heart; her eyes just hold so much knowledge of hurt and pain that it is incredibly unbearable.

The weird thing about her eyes is they seem to shift like waves or fire. Her eyes are generally green like emeralds but sometimes they change to this intense dark grayish indigo shade with the green. It is miraculous to watch it happen because it seems to be a reaction to something Ricca is thinking about at the moment. Her facial expressions are priceless and of too many to count, though I would not mind sitting there counting them all forever for her. She prefers to wear dark colors in clothing, but never something that is all one color.

She is truly something magnificent. I feel the need to protect her, even though she probably does not really need it. I want to be at her side always. I want to understand her! It's frustrating not understanding her because I think I am in love with her. Though it might be that I am just possessed by her mysterious qualities. She told me once “Do not love or sympathize with me.” I still don’t really understand what she meant by that, but I already broke that promise. If she finds that out she will probably abandon me forever. She already has a low trust level, so I am sure when it comes to breaking our promise she will be utterly disgusted with me. Why will she not allow me to love her, or cry for her, though? It’s not like that is a horrible thing to do… I wish I understood her…

I turn around staring endlessly up the staircase I just came down, from where I spoke with her. I wonder how she can just sit there for hours and not move; every time I come over here she is always up in her room sitting on the bench looking out the window. I am not really convinced she is watching anything out the window... Just lost in thought. The only time I've seen her out in the common areas of her house was when her mom was alive and even then those times were few and in between.

I thought about going to see her brother, but he let me in with a snarl of hatred today. Remedy's hatred for me lately is rather confusing. Sometimes he acts like a great friend, and other times it's like he views me as an enemy. The three of us used to be extremely close when we were younger, but the older we all got the more defensive Remedy got. I lay my hand on the knob shaking my head, about to open it to leave. Obviously, Ricca and Remedy were in no mood today for me to hang out today, but then I heard Ricca start screaming and crash from the other side of the house. The two could be unrelated but it's unlikely when it comes to this family.

So obviously, I start dashing my ass back up those stairs to her. When I open her awkward carved door, I see her in tears huddled in a corner. I examined her before entering her room, there was blood dripping from her hand and glass fragments lying next to her. Before I even make the motion to step forward to her, she turns her head and stands. I stand cold in my tracks while her eyes turn the darkest shade of indigo, there is barely any emerald left. Her eye color is swaying at tremendous speed.

“Do you know?” she whispers in an almost unhearable voice. “Where's Remedy at?”

“He let me in earlier. He went towards the kitchen after he let me in. Ricca, I think-“ I respond with sincerity.

“Don’t think,” She replies cutting me off. She tries to pass by me but I grip her in a hold to try to stop her.

“You don’t need to go down there. You can just meet out in the car, and I'll get Rem-“ I declare before she turns around and slaps me. “RICCA!”

“Mind your own business Seiko!” she retorts as she hurries to the stairs and slams into the rails. She is always so clumsy I think as I sigh.

As I go to the staircase to follow, she's already rounding the corner, a little more smoothly this time, shaking her head. I watch her under-layer purple hair go over the black cherry color section. She has the most intriguing style. I make my way around the corner observing Ricca helping Remedy to sit his back towards the cabinets. Ricca does the same and then leans her head on his shoulder whispering words to him. Probably about how it's okay, and soon they can leave. Her eye color begins to change back to their emerald color. Her brother is trying not to release tears, but losing the battle.

I was about to leave when I saw Ricca’s father turning the corner. He was no dad to his children, just another drunken ass. He is in a raging fit; if this were a cartoon, he would have red smoke flaming from his ears. Not to mention that he was dragging a lamp along with him would be like the TNT in the show. He was heading towards the kitchen. Even the dumbest of idiots would know that the fight was not over yet. He did not even notice my presents until I tripped him to save Ricca and Remedy some time.

“Ricca get out!” I scream as her father grips my foot and pulls me down. “RIC-“
