~ CHAPTER 22 ~
THE MAGIC OF TRIAL AND TEAMWORK, PART 3
So, it turned out you really can accomplish better things when you work together. It wasn’t that I hadn’t believed the Keeper when she said that, but teaming up with Demi had really driven the point home. Sure, I mean, I’d basically been useless… it was just that she didn’t seem to see it that way.
“I’m still confused why you couldn’t have just gone into your detailed log and reviewed where it said what to do?”
“Um, well… I don’t even know where that is. Or what that is.”
“Oh. Um. I see. Sorry.”
“It’s cool. So what is it?”
“There’s a button right beside the quest’s name in your log that lets you go over everything you’ve learned so far. As long as the game thinks it’s relevant.”
“Shit, really? So I could have just, like, read over the whole quest in the middle of the fight?”
“Yeah, you could have. It probably would’ve told you exactly what you had to do.”
“Oh. Wow. Um… Sorry.”
“Nah, it’s cool. I… probably should have mentioned it earlier.”
“Haha. Yeah, it might’ve helped. But seriously, this game has such a… like, what’s the word for it? A minimalist UI, I didn’t even think there would be something like that. Why not just have all the info right there when you first look for it?”
“Ah. Yeah. Um. I dunno. That would kinda make sense, wouldn’t it?” Of course, it would have also made sense for her to just pay attention in the first place, but… I wasn’t sure I was qualified to judge her on that.
After we defeated the [Defiler of Fates], Demi had asked what quest I’d been on and how she could help me in return. Then we’d both gone around picking [Neit Ear]s for what felt like half an hour. It was easy and kind of relaxing: a nice change of pace after fighting for our lives. Some loot would have been nice, though.
I had gotten Karmic Flow from the whole episode, a whopping -and very suspicious- nine points of it in fact, but the problem with delayed gratification is just that it’s, you know, delayed. The Flow on my status icon had vanished the moment the fight ended, so I could only assume it must have been one of the monster’s mechanics, and only conceptually related.
Apparently Demi had another quest or two or maybe three in the area, so she shared it/them with me. After I explained how. She was great at talking. She was even great at listening, I found out. It was just paying attention she wasn’t great at.
Or maybe it was more like paying attention to things that didn’t interest her? Or she was paying attention to so many things, she forgot which ones were important? Or she was paying attention all along, but had the short-term memory of a goldfish? I wasn’t sure which, but she had been a pretty good tank in the end, which suggested she at least had the ability to pay attention. Every time I tried to tell her that, though, she reminded me of that one time she failed to block a hit coming for me, and then simply didn’t hear anything else I had to say.
She apparently also didn’t hear whenever I tried to point out how little I’d actually done in the fight. “Stupid River, what are you talking about? You were amazing! Like when you ran right between its legs and smashed it with your force punch move so hard you almost knocked it over!”
“Yeah… Almost. And I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration, isn’t it?”
“No way, you were so cool. And then there was that bit were you just hopped on its arm and rode it up like it was nothing!”
“I was holding on for dear life, and you were literally swapping out your own gear mid-fight.”
“I know!!! Why’d it have to go and break like that? In the middle of the fight. We almost died and it was all because of me!”
“We didn’t die, because of you.”
“But we almost did, and you saved me so many times! Like that time right at the start, I so thought I was dead, and them BAM! Orb of fire out of NOWHERE!”
“Um. Ok. So I guess it was a team effort?”
“Yeah! It was so awesome!”
There was a moment of silence. Then Demi broke it again.
“Um, but, like… can it be repaired?”
“Can what be repaired?”
“My shield. It’s like a part of me, I don’t want to be without it.”
“Yeah, of course it can. I mean, depending on how many enchants it has on it. If there’s a lot you might not be able to afford it, but the NPCs in any of the blacksmiths’ shops can probably do it. Or maybe the Mage’s Guild.”
“Oh man. That’s a relief. If it’s expensive I can just earn more, but I was afraid maybe it couldn’t be done. Thanks so much! It’s like you know everything.”
“Um, well, I have watched a bunch of the videos and livestreams and stuff like that, so I guess I do know quite a bit. Maybe? I mean, not that much, but I am a gamer, so I know how games work.”
“Aww, I’m a gamer too. But I guess this is my first VR game, so that’s a bit different.”
I decided I didn’t need to mention that it was my first one as well. I went back to picking.
Yes, I wasn’t qualified to judge. Thinking about my Karmic Flow had drawn my attention to one very interesting fact: that so far, the number had only ever gone up, and not down. The only supposedly actual Discovery I’d made, that is my [Eyes of Wonder] Skill, hadn’t subtracted even a single point from my total. In other words: either my getting the Skill hadn’t really been random at all, or what I’d Discovered hadn’t really been the Skill, but something else. Or both. Either way, it was another piece of the puzzle, and another one that had been staring me right in the face the whole time if only I’d been paying attention.
Speaking of attention, I returned mine to the task at hand. [Neit Ear]s came in pods of about thirty on every fronde of the [Neit Bell]s, arranged in spirally lines along the undersides. We didn’t have to be too careful about gathering them, because they mostly just fell off on their own when we ran our hands along the frondes, but we did decide to err on the side of caution by keeping the blue ones and the orange ones separated. It was the kind of work that, other than in MMOs, you only found in the very lowest of AR or mobile games, but it was exactly what both of us needed.
Eventually we’d gathered two piles that we thought would be big enough, and had an uneventful trip back to the Mill. Apparently Demi had been looking for that as well, but it had just never occurred to her she could try looking along the road. I was sure her quest had definitely not mentioned anything about where to look. Or included that info in the detailed log.
As we crossed the drawbridge to the Mill, I looked up again at the crystals floating around its tip. I’d become fairly good at watching the silly little flows of colourfulness even if they weren’t nearly so obvious as earlier, so when I didn’t see anything, I was pretty confident that wasn’t an accident. In other words, the crystals, which seemed to be called [Magebound Aegis Lacrima] just to be pompous, were something different from the Eyes of Twilight. It was a little satisfying to have my suspicion confirmed. The puzzle was coming together.
Demi caught me looking and gave me a questioning look. “They’re pretty, aren’t they?”
I smiled back at her. “Yeah, I think so too.”
After a few more steps, she frowned. “I think there’s ones like them just outside the city, right?”
I nodded. “Yeah, on the walls, but I don’t think they’re the same.”
“Oh? Why not?”
“It’s cause these ones aren’t showing anything with the Skill I mentioned earlier, where those ones did. I think the ones around the city are actually something called the Eyes of Twilight.”
“Interesting! It’s like a mystery! I bet you’re great at those.” She grinned.
Ugh. “Thanks. I think? The game certainly seems to think so.”
“Haha, well I was going to say the game probably knows, but after everything that’s happened today I’m not so sure anymore.”
“Yeah, I know what you’re feeling. It’s been weird. I guess if you only ever got what you want, though, it would get boring after a while, wouldn’t it? You’d never try new things.”
“Hahaha, yup. Well it’s certainly been new!”
The conversation ended there, as we stepped through the doorway into the Mill. Demi had some NPCs she needed to talk to for a personal story quest, so she wandered off to do that while I went downstairs to start milling. Moments later, I was left standing by myself with two rather large piles of things that looked like a cross between Solstice Lights and extremely miniature cobs of corn. Or almost by myself. A freechild NPC was supervising a pair of Onsuni walking in and out carrying sacks of flour that I could probably fit myself inside. I approached him to find out what I had to do next.
Apparently the blue [Neit Ears] were female and the orange ones were male, because of course plants would have different sexes: that’s not weird at all. They were both fine for milling, though, so it turned out we’d only wasted our time collecting twice what we needed. On the other hand, the NPC did offer us a staggering six Silver Gemdust for our efforts… I felt robbed. I decided to keep a small handful of each as extra, and I milled the two piles separately just because. The whole process took about five minutes.
Then I met up with Demi again to head back into town. It wasn’t so much something we’d planned as just, I guessed, an assumption we’d both made. I mean, we could have dropped party… I waited for her at the same door we’d come in through, and when she caught sight of me, she ran over and grabbed my hands with a look of joy on her face before pulling me out towards the road.
As we walked, we enjoyed the slightly cooler air and the occasional wisps of colourful light or peculiar smells that danced in it. The cobblestones of the road were small and unevenly shaped, so the tufts of grass or little cream-coloured weeds that peeked between them made the ground feel pleasantly springy yet still firm. Demi commented that she really liked the birdsong, so I played a game of watching her reactions to try to figure out if it was any bird in specific. It was, I found, but there was no way for me to know what it was called, or even what it looked like. We were both keeping a close watch on the surroundings, but that didn’t mean we couldn’t also enjoy them, and having company meant that enjoyment could be shared.
Demi was on the lookout for [Starfire Wasp]s as well as [Spider Monkey]s, and I was on the lookout for [Thwart Grass]. In the end, I was the one who found all three. All at once: the monkey was wrapping the wasps up in webbing and eating/drinking them while standing in the grass, all in the centre of a bright green meadow filled with tiny flowers.
… and it occured to me we should probably leave it like that.
A few moments laters, I heard a soft, low-pitched voice from somewhere to my right. “Ah… if we leave it like that, it’ll crush all the Thwart Grass and there’ll be none left for us. I think it would be quite upsetting.”
I turned to see who the speaker was, and found him a short distance away, hiding behind a bush with big purple blossoms. Should I have been surprised to see a familiar face? Well… I wasn’t. He was still carrying his mini-shovel, but now there was a glowing of green leafy-viney stuff in his other hand. He looked fierce. Sortof. And annoyed. And still super bubbly. I could almost imagine the feeling that would inspire a person to pinch someone’s cheeks, but I decided to bury that thought securely somewhere no-one would ever find it. His fur did look really soft though…
“It’s Gadrin. I’ve seen the two of you around a few times. It’s nice to see you decided to team up.” He made a move to shift his shovel-thing into his other hand, possibly so he could shake one of ours, then thought better of it after glancing at what was already there.
“Ah, I’m River. It’s nice to finally mee-”
[Gadrin] has joined your party.
[Gadrin]
Health 34/35 ~ Mana 38/45 ~ Stamina 25/30 ~ Seeds 13/14
[Infused: Novice Mana Salve (37 min)], [Charmed: Minor Green Touch (38 hr)], [Blessed: Eliri’s Favour], [Seed of Lifespring], [Spell Primed]
“-t you face to face.”
I stumbled at the sudden development.
“You need that Thwart Grass, right?” Demi sounded cheerful. I had yet to hear her not be.
I turned back to Gadrin. Demi had already made the decision for us about what we were going to do. “Do you think your spell will be enough to kill them?”
He frowned slightly, then gave a slow nod. “I think it should be, though it will take a few hits. However, unfortunately I’m not able to cast it while they’re attacking me.”
“Then if Demi charges in and builds up some threat, I can try taking out as many wasps as I can one by one, and Gadrin you can try to get the monkey once she has its attention?” I looked at him hopefully.
“Hmm. It sounds like a good plan. I am a little worried about the wasps, though. Demi’s arms and legs are only protected by cloth, so if she gets stung, it might hurt quite a bit. Do you mind if I help you out with those to begin with?”
He had a point. A character’s Defense value was more of an indicator than a rule, and the wasps didn’t look like they’d be easy to block. “Yeah that sounds like a better idea. Ok, then when the wasps are dead I’ll try to get some punches in on the monkey. I might not have much Mana left by that point, though.”
Gadrin considered something in the air only he could see. “Hmm. Yes I see that. I do have a Seed that might help. Do you mind if I cast it on you?”
A Seed. I wondered what what kind of class he might have. It didn’t matter. “No, absolutely! Go ahead.”
“Um… you guys, if we don’t start soon I think it’s gunna be too late.” Demi cut in. She sounded nervous.
Gadrin shook his head. “I can cast my Seed from a distance, so there’s no need to hold back. Please go ahead. I’ll support you from here.”
I glanced at Demi. She glanced at me. She was clearly nervous. “Lets go in together. Ready?”
She looked slightly less nervous. “As much as I’ll ever be. You’ll use your Sign, right?”
I nodded. “Yup. Ok, let’s go!”
We both ran forward, me slightly in front of Demi. I slowed a little so she would get there first. She tripped. Something green and leafy spurted over our heads to land in the grass. Every monster on the scene turned like iron filings towards a power magnet and charged at the Balar standing behind us. Oops.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
My [Force Infused Palm] had a particular feeling when I used it, so I mustered that up and thrust at the passing wasps. Light immediately burst from my hand, catching one almost directly and knocking another off course. Pathetic.
Demi let out some kind of wail from where she’d fallen. It sounded like she was trying not to cry? Suddenly, the iron filings all had a much more powerful magnet pulling them in the opposite direction. I targeted Demi through her status icon and empowered my Sign.
There was a *thwok* followed by a series of high pitched *piii* sounds, and the buzzing of the wasps’ wings faltered. “Oh my god River you are amazing! Thank you!!” I could hear Demi trying to stand up behind me. It didn’t sound like it was going well.
I had enough Mana for one more [Force Infused Palm] or potentially two more [Myriad Fists]. Any more than that and I’d risk getting [Shocked] while the Creator Flame refreshed. It should have been an easy choice, but I didn’t want to bet on my chances of successfully punching a wasp out of the air, let alone several. The wasp I’d hit earlier wobbled back into view. It had one Health left. A direct hit hadn’t even been enough to kill it.
Something pierced my side. Was that…? It didn’t hurt, exactly. A strange warm sensation started spreading through my body in sharp little tendrils.
[Seed of Spiritspring]
Grade 1 Seed. Draws upon your Health to grow a Seedling of Spirit inside of you. Consumes 1 Health per 42 seconds. Blooms every 14 seconds to restore 1-2 Mana. Cast by [Gadrin]. Estimated duration remaining: 7 minutes.
Overpowered.
Also dangerous. I checked my Health. I still had eight left. In other words, this spell was literally going to kill me. I had done my math right, right? That was even assuming none of the monsters hit me.
I glanced towards Demi just as another spurt of green leafyness landed at her feet. Vines sprang upwards like they were spring loaded, spearing at the wasps and… mostly failing to catch them. Then they withered and disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.
Demi spun and used whatever her attack Skill was on the monkey. Actually, calling it a monkey was being too generous. Only… admitting it was a spider was too scary. Her attack lopped off one of its limbs. Only seven three to go.
I mustered up my courage. Come on River, pull your weight! “Myriad Fists!”
*Swish*, *swish*, *swish*, *bzzzawt!*, *swish*, *biiiiiii*
I pulled my hand back. There was… oh no oh nononononoNO! NO!! NO! There was… a wasp. Latched onto my fist. Crawling towards me along my arm. Its stinger was as long as my finger. It had four big blue wings each longer than my entire hand. It was evil and crawly and vicious and HORRIBLE! I panicked.
At some point later I became aware that I had successfully defeated three of the wasps on my own. I also became aware that I could no longer speak or cast spells or really do anything at all.
I saw Demi moving her lips with a look of concern on her face. Gadrin said something in reply and she looked slightly relieved. Then a wasp landed on her own arm and her eyes went wide. She opened her mouth to… maybe scream? Whatever it was, she immediately snapped her mouth shut again and made a fierce face. Demi, you are my hero. One of Gadrin’s vine spheres hit the ground at her feet and an almost instantly impaled three wasps, including the one on her arm.
There was a sensation like a bubble bursting inside my body, and my Mana ticked up by two. Sounds came crashing back into my world. Sortof. Also feelings. Again sortof. Mostly pain. The Inscription on my chest burned. It felt like it was trying to suck all of the blood in my body out through my skin all at once. I thought the game was supposed to have a limit on pain? Lesson learned: getting [Shocked] is a bad idea, but getting [Shocked] while a Rune is refreshing is a worse one. I scrambled away as fast as my mostly numb body would allow and counted the seconds until the effect wore off. Curling up in a little ball didn’t really help.
Interestly, the Creator Flame refreshed before my status ailment wore off: apparently the Runes could still draw Mana from me even when I couldn’t use it myself. I’d gone up to five Mana before I could finally hear and speak and use Skills again, so I went straight back to fighting.
Well, at least I tried to, but by then the fight was mostly over anyway. I helped mop up the last of the wasps, and lifted a little of the pressure off Demi with another use of my Sign. Six out of ten. The final tally went something like this:
Me: seven [Starfire Wasp]s.
Gadrin: thirteen [Starfire Wasp]s and about ninety percent of the damage to the [Spider Monkey], all done using his vine spheres.
Demi: The other ten percent.
On the other hand, there was no question who had been the MVP. Demi still had nineteen health and about thirty Stamina left, despite her face being frozen in a permanent expression of stark terror. All of the bodies were at her feet, arranged in a neat little circle.
We watched as the bodies slowly went transparent, and then a glowing orb appeared in the centre of them, coincidentally right inside Demi’s body. She stepped away from it with a pleased exclamation. “Oooh! We’ve got loot!”
I waited for the notification to appear.

I broke the silence. “If we go back to town together, we can all turn in the quest at the same time so we all get credit.”
Gadrin nodded slowly and somewhat absentmindedly shifted his shovel to his left hand before wiping the right on his robe. “Would the two of you mind if I took some time to gather the remaining Thwart Grass before we leave? I don’t believe it should take very long.”
I felt a tug of guilt. “Um, actually… would it be ok if I took four of those for myself?” I hadn’t exactly earned them, but I really didn’t want to have to go through the same fight again.
Gadrin gave me a bright smile, made all the sillier by the ginger patches on his cheeks. “Just four? From the way you were looking at them earlier, I thought you might have wanted the whole patch. Go on. I think you’ve earned them.”
That was… I wasn’t sure what exactly I should say to that. “Um. Thanks a lot. I just need four for my quest, though. You can have the rest.”
“Aww, that’s really generous of you. Well if you don’t want any more, I won’t hold back. I can replant them in my own garden and make plenty more.”
“Ooh, I suspected you had some sort of gardening based class since you had Seeds as a resource. That’s really cool. I just couldn’t figure it out cause it seemed like gardening would be a crafting class.”
I heard Demi mutter something beside me. It sounded like she said “so adorable”, but that didn’t really make sense in context.
Gadrin snorted. “The trowel didn’t give it away? Actually it is a crafting class. I only have one offensive Skill and it requires preparation to use. Luckily I’ve been doing my preparing all day for a situation like this, or I would have run out half way through the battle.”
Now I just felt bad. If only I’d had full Mana he wouldn’t have had to fight at all. Not that… not that I’d actually have wanted to fight those wasps for any longer than I had. All I could think of to say was “thank you.”
“You’re absolutely welcome. Do you want me to show you how to harvest them, or would it be easier if I just gathered them all myself and gave you four?”
“No, I’d like to learn. If I find any more later on I can bring them back for you.”
His eyes went wide and then he burst out in laughter. “Ahh, you’re too sweet! That’s really generous of you. If you’d do that for me I’d be very grateful, haha.”
Demi muttered something else, but I really didn’t pick it up this time.
I felt my cheeks burning. I hadn’t meant it like that! “I… I meant, like… if I brought ingredients back, you could help me get potions and stuff like that. I know a couple of Witches and an Enchantress, and there’s the Keeper as well who obviously uses herbs for the inks, so, like, it’d be really useful to know someone who can grow things.”
Gadrin nodded seriously, but the twinkle in his eye didn’t go away. “Yeah, you have a good point. I realised that was what you meant. I’d be happy to work with you and your friends. It can only benefit everyone involved, especially if you can help me get rare seeds.”
And thus it was another fifteen minutes before we made it back to Cowl’s Landing. Gadrin was able to withdraw the [Seed of Spiritspring] so I didn’t die, but not before it had regenerated half my Mana pool and consumed all but two of my Health. Both my movements and thoughts were painfully sluggish with ninety percent of my Agility and Celerity missing, but it was ok. I remembered to ask him if he knew anything about the Nimbus Flower, but I wasn’t surprised when he said he hadn’t heard of it. I was going to send a message to Essy later anyway.
These thoughts were still drifting through my mind when we rounded the final bend in the trees, and I caught sight of the city walls once again. My eyes went to the crystals. My eyes stayed on the crystals. What?
Demi saw me staring. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Um… remember how I told you about my Skill showing me these weird wavy lines?”
“Yeah, I do. I remember it had something to do with the crystals. These ones were different from the ones above the Mill because only these ones had wavy lines.”
“Right.”
“Let me guess: they aren’t anymore.”
“No. they aren’t.”
“Hmm…” Demi pondered. “Let me think. What was it you said they were called again?”
“The Eyes of Twilight.”
She glanced around, up at the sky, then back at me somewhat timidly. “What if… is it possible they’re not showing up because it isn’t actually twilight anymore?” A moment later she blushed. “Sorry, that was a bit…”
I stared at her. “That’s…”
And the pieces slid into place.
Twilight, the Skystream, Runes, the Mist, Fate… No, none of it had been random at all.

“Demi, you’re a genius.”
Gadrin glanced at Demi and met her eyes. I had no idea what their expressions meant. Demi reached out her hand and took mine. “Just putting it out there. Glad I could help!”
I heard a deep voice mutter something softly. It sounded like “I think the Nimbus Flower might be closer than she thinks.”
Hey! I heard that!
It seemed… well, apparently you didn’t even need to be working together to accomplish better things: it was enough just to be in each other’s company. I wondered what the Keeper would say to that.
