~ CHAPTER 18 ~
THE MAGIC OF SEEKING AND DISCOVERING, PART 2
Step One: the Town Hall Archives.
The inside of the Town Hall was exactly as imperious as the outside would suggest. Stained marble tiles polished to perfection marched through a hall that was at least four times larger than it had any reasonable excuse to be, and tucked away in a tiny corner was a counter behind which sat no less than five clerks. For some reason, every one of them was occupied, and had been occupied since I entered.
There was just one small issue: “I sincerely apologize, but it’s just like I said, the Archives are restricted access to official personnel only.”
I gave the stuffy Freechild man-in-tailored-suit my best bug-eyed glare. I’d already tried upturned pleading and gracious reasonableness, but neither had had the slightest effect. It didn’t help that he was a head and shoulders taller than me. His spectacles were crooked. I felt the urge the point that out to him, but decided I’d better not.
It seemed… I would just have to give up. I’d been trying for what must have been at least ten minutes.
Well, it’s not like I didn’t have anywhere else to go, right? Right? The stairs to climb the Clocktower were accessed from one corner of the lobby, framed on either side by sets of potted trees grown so their trunks formed spirals around each other. The beads of glowing blue moisture on their leaves felt weirdly appropriate as I trudged through the archway.
But most gracious, kind, and noble sir, is it not the case that I have already seen not one, not two, but actually three obviously non-official personnel go through the exact same door in the very time we have been having this lovely conversation? I could only imagine what his response might have been.
Yeah, anyway. Clocktower. It was worth taking a look. There were a bunch of stairs to climb. The view at the top was pretty cool, too, I guess. Very, like, blue and green and stuff. The Skystream sat there in the sky mocking me, but I didn’t think taking its taunts would get me any closer to solving my problem.
Oh sure, they can go in. They’re normal. It’s not that we don’t like you, but… you know?
Before I turned to leave again, I took a moment to observe the strange web of vibrance running through the city, thinking maybe the different perspective would give me a different… perspective. I immediately noticed one thing that was new. Not all of the rivulets started from the same place, but there was still obviously a centrepoint to the whole thing, located somewhere near but not inside the Mage’s Guild. The city now looked even more like a spider’s web when seen from this high up. If I took that impression further, though, suddenly I wondered if it wasn’t the eyes that were important at all, but whatever was in the centre. Mulling over this new thought, I started back down.
As I once again crossed through the archway and stepped back into the downstairs lobby, I walked head first into a wall of red. Kind of soft. Smelled warm, and slightly overly sweet.
“Hello, excuse me. Sorry for that.” I blinked up. And up. And up… a fluffy black goatee twinkled back down at me. “I was trying to get your attention.”
“Um. Sorry. I wasn’t looking.” My face was actually burning.
“Yes I did notice.”
“I’ll, um, just be going now. If that’s ok. Sorry again.”
“I believe I also noticed why you weren’t looking. Quite upsetting, wasn’t it?”
“Yes. I mean, I guess. Yeah. I don’t know. What was up with that?”
“My name’s Jeshire, by the way. I work here. Is this your first time visiting the Town Hall?”
Jeshire the Asyr. It had a ring to it. He had a ring to him as well. Left ear, near the top. I observed him as I took a few steps back. He had a face, also, I just hadn’t been able to see it until now. His expression was clearly intended to be friendly, but now that I realised what had happened, I was starting to feel like it was my personal space that had just been violated. Still, there was no point running away now. “Yes, it is. I guess I was just surprised. I didn’t know the Archives were restricted.”
“Yes, I suppose that would have come as a surprise. To me as well. I’m sure they had a good reason, though I can’t fathom what it might have been. Do you mind telling me what it was you were looking for? Perhaps I can be of some help.”
“Oh, um, yeah. Maybe. It was about the eyes. Around the city. The Eyes of Twilight. I saw them maybe a bit more than half an hour ago? And I wanted to find out what they were for.”
“Oh? Now that is curious. The Eyes of Twilight, you say. I haven’t heard of anything like that. Where did you say you saw them?”
“Um, like, everywhere? Like seriously they were huge. It was some effect of the crystals on the walls, but I guess it was only like that for a few minutes?”
“Oh the crystals? Those old things? I can answer that. They’re just for defense against threats from the jungle. They form a lattice that prevents harmful magical creatures from flying over the walls. It’s interesting hearing you describe them as eyes, though. I never would have made the connection myself.”
That… was I just crazy? No, they had definitely looked like eyes. Also it was in the name of the quest. That little detail had to count for something. Jeshire seemed like he was honestly trying to help, though, so… what? Another clue.
“Huh. You said you work here, so you must have seen them pretty often, too. Weird. I wonder what it was I saw, then. Anyway, I was just thinking I’d try to find out more information about the crystals from the archives, but I guess, well, that’s not happening anyway.”
“Right, well, so it seems. I can’t apologize enough for that, by the way. I’ll definitely take a look into it. In the meantime, is there possibly anything else I can help you with?”
“Um, well.” Oh wait! Opportunity! “Oh, yeah, actually maybe there is. I have this whole list of ingredients I’m trying to find, but I’m not having a whole lot of luck so far. Like Cloud Salt and Thoril’s Needle. Maybe you can think of where I could find some of them?”
“Hmm, Cloud Salt? Absolutely. Cloud Salt comes in from the Salt Skiffs every morning, at the docks. The Salt Refinery is right there as well, so it’s convenient. If you want to buy some, I should expect all you need to do is go there and you can get as much as you want. As for Thoril’s Needle… hmm, that’s a bit trickier.”
“Supposed to be a common ingredient in a lot of Witches’ brews?”
“Oh, yes. That’s right. Well I suppose the place to start would be by finding a Witch, then, wouldn’t it? That isn’t always as easy to do as say, though, I know. Hmm. Why don’t you try going down Hazeroot Row over in the eastern part of town? If I know Witches, they do like places with a lot of good ventilation. Does that give you a place to start?”
“Oh yeah. It does! Thanks! Ok, I’ll go do that!”
“You’re welcome. Do let me know how it goes when next you’re around.”
“Absolutely. Of course! Thanks again!”
I gave him what I thought was a decently bright smile while walking backwards and waving, then turned and scurried towards the east.
[The Eyes of Twilight]

Somehow, I wasn’t surprised.
The moment I was out of sight, my smile vanished like a puff of smoke. I knew exactly where Cloud Salt came from, it wasn’t like I was an idiot. I just wasn’t going to go there. Between my current location and the docks, I’d need to go past the Crystal Smithy.
Step Two: a [Witch] for [Thoril’s Needle].
Finding Hazeroot Row turned out to be somewhat more difficult than expected. Simply knowing it was in the east was apparently not enough. When I did find it, finding anything else inside of it was also more difficult than expected. ‘Good ventilation’, he’d said. Nice one.
There was no shortage of thick cauldrons or people in thick robes stirring them, and there was also no shortage of thick roots to trip over or duck under on the way, but what there was a shortage of was any sort of signage to know who was available to approach for a trade… and who was actually a zombie with only half a face and maggots crawling from the other half.
I may have screamed. Just a little.
What really did make me scream was when I finally stood up from the corner I’d run to and felt spider’s web in my hair. Real spider’s web.
I heard a voice. “Hey, be careful, if you thrash around like that you’ll just get more on you. Here, let me help.”
I didn’t want to look, but I did anyway. The girl who came to help me had long straight black hair, unrealistically flawless white skin, and an elegance that couldn’t possibly be just from in game. She also had two extra eyes on her temples, two massive black fangs, and four extra limbs sticking out from her back, each one longer than I was tall, and covered in black chitin. I didn’t run because I couldn’t, I was too tightly entangled. I didn’t scream because I thought it would be rude. I did try to give her a reassuring smile, but I don’t think it worked.
Somehow the smile she gave me wasn’t very reassuring either. Maybe it was the fangs. Still, it only took her a moment to untangle me, and then I was off again like a rocket. A memory of the Keeper’s voice popped into my mind. I stopped and turned around somewhat guiltily. “Thanks!”
I still didn’t meet any of her eyes.
After that, I tried to be a little more choosy about how I went forward. I mean, I’m sure the zombie was just doing its job, right? I was glad it hadn’t been a player, with, you know, feelings. Finding anyone helpful was still a slightly tricky job, though, given that street didn’t have ‘haze’ in its name for no reason, but I thought could manage. Especially after my eyes started to adjust. No, it wasn’t particularly dark.
Apart from the spider’s webs, and the zombies, and the roots, Hazeroot Row had no shortage of other things to gawk at. The whole area was illuminated by bright yellow paper lanterns, standing out like will-o-the-wisps where they were strung across the alley, but there were also at least four layers of them, one for each floor, creating an optical illusion that made it almost impossible to judge distances. Calling it a street would have been a grave injustice to any street with half a modicum of self-respect, but I didn’t think calling it a mall would be inaccurate. The way the roots were grown made it obvious that business was conducted all the way up, and all the way down, but I could only wonder at how one would find out what most of the shops even did. Without going in and asking, of course. I observed a Freechild in the process of getting his tongue pierced, seen from below through one of the window openings. WTF. Well, that would be one way…
“Hey! Watch it!”
When I finally did find a suitable [Witch], it was only because he practically fell into my lap. Well, the only reason he missed was because I was already face down on the ground. Just because I could see didn’t mean I did see, and that root seriously came out of nowhere, ok? Also the swirly colour thing from my Skill had just surged up for no reason. Also also, I’d been busy watching the planter full of [Thoril’s Needle] that was… had been… dug into another root connected nearby.
“Oomph.”
“Damn two-legs. You have any idea how much a brew like that’s gunna cost me?”
“I’m so sorry. Do you think it can be saved?”
“Not unless you wanna lap it up off the cobblestones, sweetcheeks.”
I could see the remains of the potion smoking nearby. The smoke was dark green and bubbling. Yes, the smoke was. I waited for him to get off me, then scrambled to my feet, turned around, and tightly clasped my hands together. My attempt at an apologetic stance ran into a slight snag when I discovered I was now looking down at him. Far down. He reared up on his hind legs and glared at me from behind a set of long grey whiskers, his hairless tail held stiffly behind him and still wrapped around a wooden stirring spoon. Maan, why did Ratmen have to be one of the races in this game? Couldn’t they have just gone with, like, Gnomes or something instead? At least it was still better than the Sathanid I’d met earlier… but not by much.
My whole being was telling me to get away as fast as I possibly could, but I realised this situation kind of was my fault. “I’m really sorry.” Yeah, it was still worth a try.
“Fuuck you. You trying to play the cute card on me there or something? Bugger off, seriously. Can’t you see I’m trying to level up my brewing?”
“Um, not really, I just… I really am sorry. I’ll um. I’ll pay for it, but it might just take me a little while.”
“Yeah? You will, huh? Ok. Two violet and you can scram.”
Before I could answer, another male voice interjected from somewhere off to my left, causing my panic to spike again. “Tendrit you ass, give the girl a break. You know you were only making Ruvalu Essence.”
Tendrit, to his credit, decided to look vaguely embarrassed. He lashed his tail a few times while looking somewhere off to the right of my calf.
“Whatever.”
“Did… did you just try to extort me?” Now it was my turn to glare.
“Only by about, oh, I can’t do the math. A hundred and ten silver gemdust?” The other guy suggested helpfully. “A bit more than thirty-one ochre anyway.”
“Dude! What the fuck? Bros before hoes!” Tendrit spread his paws and shot a look of incredulity off to my left.
“Yeah, I don’t think that applies here.” The other man finally appeared where I could see him, preceded by a twist of light so obvious I wondered how it was possible for nobody else to see it. He was at least a head and shoulders taller than me, or probably more, and had an uneven jaw and eyes that glowed pale yellow. That made him the third Mistborn I’d seen since leaving the Keeper’s sanctuary. For some reason that number felt surprising. Hadn’t it been more?
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
“Ok, well, whatever. Fine. Sorry. The brew I was making probably cost about two and a half silver. Happy now? But you still screwed me over because I haven’t got enough to try it again.”
“Um… maybe I can help? I don’t have much, but I have got, uhh… fifteen Amarh Elbow Gristle? Can you use that?”
“What the fuck? NO! I can’t use that! I don’t even know what the fuck that shit is.”
I saw the other guy smirk. He looked down at the Ratman, then shook his head. “You know, she does have one thing you could use. Two actually.”
“Yeah? What’s that? And how do you even know that?” Tendrit did his best to sneer, but coming from his tiny snout it didn’t have quite the same effect, especially given how far he had to crane to look up.
“Think for a second. I’m sure you can figure it out. What do Witches do?”
Hold up? “Um, wait, so you guys are Witches? Really?” Isn’t that, like, only for girls?
The Mistborn man gave me a slightly condescending smile. “Yes, we are. This guy is my co-apprentice. Trust me, he’s not as bad as he seems, he’s just had a rough day.”
“Rough day my ass. Tejana here is just a demon pretending to be human.”
““Mistborn.”” We both spoke at the same time, glanced at each other, and then snickered.
After that a moment of silence descended while we waited for the Ratman to figure out his answer. Suddenly he got a self-satisfied expression on his face and snapped his fingers. “I’ve got it! A drop of her blood!
“Wait, what?” Noooo way!
“Good job.” Tejana said in a flat tone.
“Umm… you sure that’s what you need?” I glanced up hopefully at the taller Witch, but he wasn’t looking at me.
“No, that’s definitely it!” Tendrit’s voice sounded excited now.
I didn’t like where this was going. Still, I felt like I’d learned my lesson now as to how to deal with him. “Ok, wait. Stop for a second. Lets think about this. Supposing I did agree to that deal, you can’t forget that you just tried to extort me out of a hundred and ten silver gemdust. With that in mind, my blood has got to be worth more than two and a half.”
Tendrit’s glare returned like it had been spring loaded. “Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, darling. Wake up already, you’re not some special snowflake.”
That was his opinion, but regardless of my own opinion on the matter, somehow it didn’t feel like his held a whole lot of weight. I turned back to his co-apprentice. “You have a whole planter full of Thoril’s Needle over there. I want fifteen of them.”
Tejana’s grin was infectious, but it had a devilish quality to it. “No way. Five.”
Oops… should have started out higher, shouldn’t I? Well, I couldn’t back out now. “Fifteen.”
“Eight.”
“Fifteen.”
“That’s not how this works.”
“I know. Fifteen.”
“Fine then, Fifteen. Fifteen Thoril’s Needle and two-and-a-half silver’s worth of Ruvalu Essence for one drop of Mistborn blood and a scraping from your cheek. Deal?”
“Deal.” Woot! I won! You go River!
Wait… this… oh. Uh oh.
It was already too late to back out.

Somehow, I wasn’t surprised.
What were a pair of [Witch]es going to do with my blood, anyway? Also, did I really want to know?
[Sapphire Mud] has the property of pain reduction. Apparently Tendrit used more of it than he was supposed to, based on the scowl he got from his co-apprentice.
Step Three: a [Tailor] for [Myrl Rose].
As it happens, [Witches] don’t tend to have [Myrl Rose] on hand. That was a little surprising, considering it’s only listed property was anti-adhesion. Also very relieving. You want to know who does, though? Tailors. I didn’t know why, but I had a bad feeling.
“Oh hey! It’s you again! Welcome to our shop!”
Yes, a very bad feeling.
The shop in question hadn’t been terribly difficult to find. After I’d agreed to let my finger get sliced open, I’d decided I couldn’t lose anything by asking for my next clue. They’d actually both been really helpful, so I guess I should have known how it was going to turn out. Who was most likely to be running a tailoring shop two stories above ground in the dimmest, most cramped, most difficult to get to part of town? Sathanids.
It had taken me a minute to get up the nerve to go inside, and now I was already regretting it.
I still couldn’t meet any of her eyes.
“Um… hi… ahh… I’m River.” Idiot, don’t go and introduce yourself! Get the item and run!
“Wow! Hi! River. It’s so nice to finally meet you properly! I’m Inkitina, or you can just call me Tina like my friends do, if it’s hard to pronounce. Oh, I bet we’re going to be great friends, I can see it already!”
Yeah, that’s why. Unfortunately, too late now. I tentatively stuck out my hand to shake the one she offered me. “Nice to meet you too.” There was no way she didn’t hear the tremor in my voice.
“So how do you like Hazeroot Row? It’s pretty cool, right?”
That… I could agree with actually. It was cool. All of it except, you know, the spider’s nest!
“Yeah, it actually is. I was surprised. I didn’t know there was a place like this in the game.”
“Oh you never saw any of the videos? Wow have I got places to show you, then! We’re gunna have so much fun!”
Oh no. This conversation was not going in a good direction. It had barely even started! “No, I did, I just didn’t see any of this place. It’s cool how there are still so many things to see even though the game’s been in beta for so long.”
Inkitina was either oblivious to my tone, or purposefully ignoring it. I wasn’t sure which was worse. “Right?! I know what you mean. There’s still a tonne of places I need to visit, and that’s just inside the town! Lets not even mention all the places I’d like to visit outside of town! So what part of town are you from, anyway? In game in mean! Sorry! I meant in game! Or, don’t you have a home base yet?”
“Um… well I guess I sort of do, actually. It’s the rooftop terrace area near the centre of town, just west of the Mage’s Guild.”
“Oh wow! Really? I didn’t even know there was an area like that! On the rooftops, really? See, we’ve both got places we didn’t even know existed! We’re like sisters, haha! You’ve got to show me how to get there!”
Huh? I was lost. I wanted to steer the conversation back to where I needed it, but how could I do that without being rude? Sisters? Maybe try the non-committal approach? “Well… I guess I could do that some time? Maybe when I’m free?”
“Oh you’re amazing! We’re going to have so much fun! We can invite a bunch of our friends and have a rooftop party. I bet you have such amazing friends, I want to meet them.”
Now I was feeling slightly insulted. How could she even know that? We’d barely met! She didn’t know anything about me! Argh!
Before I could open my mouth to express my frustration, she kept going like she’d never stopped. “So anyway! We’ll have to do that! But right now, I’m sure you came here with something in mind, right? Can I help you find a new dress? Get you out of the starter equipment. If you let me, we can find so many good things for you, you’ll look amazing!”
No! Well, actually... maybe? If it was with someone like her, I might be able to just watch and learn, and she probably wouldn’t even notice. I still didn’t have any Gemdust, though. “Um, thinking about it, I think I might like that? But I can’t do that right now. I don’t have any Gemdust.”
“Aww! Never mind that! I can get something for you! We’re sisters, so of course I can do that. Come on, lets try some things on, I’m going to make you look so good!”
For free?! Really? I was still in the starting equipment, so that wasn’t something I could exactly turn down, but it felt like I was exploiting some benefit I hadn’t done anything to earn. What was the catch?
“There’s just one catch, though.”
Knew it! “Oh, ok. What’s that?”
“You’ve got to add me to your friends list! That way I can contact you for that party!”
That’s a catch?
…
Shopping didn’t take very long. Unlike when I’d been browsing with Imura, Inkitina knew exactly what was in her shop and exactly what would look good, so the only bit that took any time was trying everything on. I couldn’t help but feel curious what kind of life she lived in the real world: you didn’t get this good at picking out clothes just by living normally… did you?
Thinking about it, what kind of person would you need to be for the system to make you a Sathanid? They weren’t as rare as Faeries or Ratmen, in fact they were only a little rarer than Mistborn, but they were still rare enough that it was probably not just random chance. She was the first one I’d met so far, but, looking around me, I realised that that was probably not random chance either.
Where I was, what I’d hoped would be an ordinary tailoring shop, was very obviously a nest. It was hidden in an alcove branching off from just above where I’d seen the zombie earlier, but I couldn’t see how far in it went due to the webs in the way. Far from being the only Sathanid in the place, Inkitina wasn’t even the only Sathanid player, and the number of people coming out from inside was definitely more than the number coming in from outside.
It was still a tailor’s shop, though, and I quickly learned that trying on clothes was a lot more involved of a process than I’d realised. Some of them really did look amazing. Some of them… well, I didn’t think I was ready to start showing off my absolute territory in public, no matter how good it looked, or how much I made Inkitina pout.
In the end, I almost forgot to ask her about the [Myrl Rose]. When I did, she didn’t even hesitate. The payment was that I had to let her keep all the screenshots she’d taken of me while we were trying things on. Somehow… I had to wonder if this deal was actually any better than the last one.

She also gave me a bracelet. I felt less bad about it after she told me that it was literally free to craft. Apparently Sathanids are overpowered. I just had to not think too hard about where she got the silk from.
Step Four: a [Chef] for [Crushed Red Longshore Prawn’s Shell].
Inkitina had been nothing if not helpful. Excessively so. She knew exactly where I could find my next item, and even offered to take me there. I wasn’t sure if that was because she genuinely wanted to be friendly, or if she just didn’t want to let me out of her clutches.
“Oh, I don’t want you to go! I’m so sad now! You have to come back some time!”
“Um… yeah. So anyway, thanks again for taking me all the way here, and for the rose and bracelet!” It’s not that I didn’t want to be grateful…
“Promise me you’ll message me!”
Well… I was grateful. Also she was nice… fine. “I promise!”
“YAY! River! We’re going to be such great friends! It feels like I’ve already known you for forever. Ok, I’ll let you go now, but message me!”
I knew she wasn’t desperate for friends. I’d already lost count of all the people she’d tried to introduce me to on the way. “This is my new little sister! Her name is River!” What I couldn’t quite figure out was why she seemed to like me so much.
Anyway.
The next bit was pretty boring. The [Chef] I’d been introduced to, but had forgotten the name of, was all too happy let me help him out in return for some [Crushed Red Longshore Prawn’s Shell]s, explicitly as a favour to Inkitina. So, I did that. My job was to do the crushing. At some point he also gave me some [Red Prawn and Pepper Stew Jelly Popsicle]s, which were unexpectedly delicious. I also gained an upgrade to my [Elementary Ingredient Preparation (Passive)] Skill. I had not equipped it for the job. Maybe I should have?
