Chapter 16: Forgotten Past Part 4: Aftermath

She stormed out of the auditorium, trying to stop the tears from flowing, she was overwhelmed with emotions and she couldn't think straight. She held her phone tightly in her hand, trembling as she scrolls through the number of messages that she received from her father.

[ There was an urgent] She read the last message her father had sent her before the messages stopped.

She calls her father, checking to see if there has been any news on the matter at hand.

" Hello? Is everything okay? What happened?! I saw your last message!!" Her voice cracked as she said those words

" Harper! I'm so glad I got through to you. Sorry I couldn't send any more updates. I only have a little bit of battery life left so I wanted to preserve what I have left."

" It's okay! What was the urgent message you sent me about?"

" Oh! That one. It was nothing, it was just that they needed to make some decision and I'm not sure what we gonna have to do. Anyway, everything is all settled now, no worries. You should make your way here. I'm sure he will be glad to see you."

" Yes, I will most definitely be there. Let me just grab what I need." She rushed to the locker room

As she reached the locker room, it was too dark to see anything.

She sat on the bench zoning out as she stare through the empty room that she was in. Her mind started to wonder about the thoughts of what had happened and what awaits her.

Her mind took over, she couldn't help but think about the worse possible outcome. Afraid of what was ahead of her, she continued to sit as she wallow in sadness and hopelessness. She grabbed her bag beside her as she sat in complete silence.

Suddenly, the light switched on. She was dazed for a second, waking her up to a realization, that she have to pack her things and head out. She looked around still feeling the effect of the shimmering lights. She looked at the door, only to see a familiar face that greeted her with a smile.

She couldn't be bothered, why she was there, or why she was smiling brightly as if she was just won a lottery. She just wanted to be alone, with her thoughts slowly eating away at her sanity. Miss wendy walked further in, she grabbed a chair and sat opposite of her.

" What happened? She spoke calmly afraid of scaring her even more with her leg crossed.

" Why did you walk out of the auditorium all of a sudden?"

"..." Her silence continued, as she packed her bag

" Answer me, Harper? What happened to you?" She continued to question her

"..." She grabbed her bag

" Look at me! I'm talking to you!" She grabbed her shoulder from behind, as she turned her around

She was shocked to see her puffy red eyes, tears flowing down her face as her makeup was fading away.

" Are you doing okay?"

"... No." She let out a soft voice, you could barely hear it

She grabbed her by her hands, wrapped her hands around her, and hugged her. She held her tightly in her arms afraid to let her go. She hugged her as she spoke, telling her that she will be okay. She is there if she needs someone to talk to.

Harper was numbed to it all. She couldn't feel her love and affection, all she wanted to do was get away from all of this and make her way to where her dad and the rest were waiting. Miss Wendy let go of her and her facial expression didn't change the slightest.

Harper grabbed her bag and she slowly dragged her feet out of the room. Miss Wendy stood there as she watches her walk away.

As she left, Miss Wendy noticed that she left her phone on the bench. She picked it up, the phoned buzzed.

[ I'll be waiting in Saint Marys

-Dad ]

" Harper!! Wait up!! You left your phone back in the room!!" Miss Wendy shouted as she ran to where she was

She finally caught up with her, holding her phone in her hand, gesturing her to take it. Harper grabbed it without uttering a word as she walked off.

She unlocked her phone, to check if there was anything that her father might have sent. She saw his new messaged and looked in the direction of what transportation she needed to take. Taking her phone, with the direction of the place she needed to go, she slowly made her way through the overpass and waited for the bus.

Harper stepped out of the bus, and walked toward a big building, holding her phone tightly as she walked. She continued to walk and stopped in front of the building. She was contemplating, as she paces back and forth, thinking about what she will have to face or if she is brave enough to face what awaits her in this building.

After a few minutes, she finally got the courage to go inside and walked to the lift. She pressed the up button as her hands were trembling with fear and anxiety. She went inside, she couldn't muster the energy to press the close button. she pressed the 7th floor her hands trembling as she waited for the lift to reach.

She stepped outside and was bombarded with people walking around pushing their way through. Making their way as they go from one point to the next. The air was filled with uncertainty and gloom as she made her way through the hallway finding the door she had to go to.

She started to tear up as the thought came rushing in. She quickly rushed to the nearest toilet to avoid being noticed by the people who were walking about.

She looked at herself in the mirror trying to wipe the tears from her face, she brush her hair back with her hands and wiped the makeup she had put on. She blew her nose with the 3 ply tissue that she had with her in her bag. Her eyes were puffy as she tries to press them down to release the tension and make it look normal.

She calmed herself down, from the panic she was having and make sure that she was feeling okay before she went in. After a while, she finally stepped outside and continue to make her way through the door marked on the message that was sent to her.

She stood outside the door with a ' Waiting room ' hanging on the door, thinking about what she will find on the other side of the door. She gripped tightly onto the handle as she pressed it down the latch bolt came undone as she pushed the door open.

She open the door and saw her father sitting on the bench at the side shaking his leg waiting impatiently, unable to contain his anxiety and nerves. He pulled back his hair as he gripped it with frustration and let out a big sigh. He decided to stand up, as his thoughts were becoming more and more jumbled up and he couldn't sit still. He stood up and saw Harper come in.

" Hey, sweetie!! I'm so glad you could make it."

" What's happening? What are they doing right now? How did it happen? Who was it?" She asked a rapid-fire question

" Your brother and Bruno ran into an accident. They were playing outside, Jerry threw the ball a little too far and when Bruno ran after it, he ran into the open road. Your brother saw and ran in to save him. By the time he grabbed him, there was no time to react further and they both got run over by the car. Your mom saw the blood pool on the road as she was going out to hang the clothes and shouted for help."

" OHH!! GODDDD!!" She started sniffing as her eyes started to well up

" We're currently waiting for the doctors to see what happened and if the operation were successful."

" What was the driver thinking?! Didn't he see them on the road!! How blind can he be?!" Showing her frustration while she gripped her hands tightly wanting to punch the air

" I spoke to your mom. Apparently, the guy, who was driving, was a little too intoxicated and he was driving back home, on a road that has a 30km/h limit and he was driving at 50km/h. We have made a report about this to the police and they are handling the case right now."

" Ohh!! That's so stupid!!! Those kinds of people are the worse!! Shouldn't they know not to drive when they know they can't do it!!! How is this fair?!! Just cause of one jackass who doesn't know common sense and who's apparently dumber than a bag of rocks, we ended up here!!" She yelled trying to restrain her anger

Her dad came to her and hugged her tightly as she slowly wept to let her cry out. he caresses her hair to let her know that it'll be okay and that there's nothing to worry about.

" Where's mom?" She whispered to him

He let go of her as he gestured to the chair, where she saw her mom sleeping.

" How is she doing?" She asked

" She had a long day. She couldn't stop crying, from the time we were at our house all the way here. I finally managed to get her to eat a little just now. She's been pushing herself too much today. I was glad that she finally got some sleep." She had an exhausting day.

" When will you know the result of the operation?"

" The doctors were still unsure of when this will end. All we have to do is wait it out the best we can. They are doing their best to save both of them. In the meantime, try to get some sleep and get something to eat when you can. It might be a long night."

" There are some sandwiches, we bought them just now, while we were out to get dinner. You can eat some if you are hungry."

" Its fine, I don't think I'll have the appetite to eat. I'm too anxious about the results hopefully there are no complications."

She grabbed the seat, that was two seats away from her mother and placed her belongings beside her. She couldn't help but think, about the day she just had. It was a whirlwind of emotions, she was afraid and anxious about what she will have to face when she gets back to school.

She tries to close her eyes as she tries to fall asleep, but her thoughts were making it hard for her to find peace. Her anxiety and panic did not seem to help. The chair didn't help either, due to the lack of lumbar support, causing her back to ache as she tries her best to find the optimal position to get some sleep before the operation was finished.

The doctor opened the door and came into the waiting room. Harper's parents were sleeping on the bench. The doctor walked over as the floor creaked. It woke up Harper who hadn't slept for the past 13 hours. She woke up her parents, letting them know that the doctor was here for the result.

" Mr. and Mrs. Kensly, I'm sorry to break the news to you, but Bruno did not make it. I'm sorry, we tried everything we could to save him, but we just couldn't. The injury was too severe to let him live. However, we were able to operate successfully on Jason and he is recovering just fine. He is in his ward resting. You can see him in a little bit if you wish to. I'm sorry for your loss." The doctor announced
