ARDOSUS
"We'll send you the materials by the month’s end." The village elder nodded with a great smile. “Thank you Ardosus, I never thought that you’d be so generous to such an insignificance village.” I nodded. The villages should know I am not a ruler who lets my people suffer. “If you think this way, then do not be afraid to tell others I will not ignore them.” “Yes my Queen, I will go right away.” He quickly walked out of the Royal Hall, his heavy boots squeaking periodically. "Is that the last of them?" The diplomat nodded. "That avalanche caused plenty of damage. It should be expected that we’ll see them again," said the diplomat, as he moved his attire gracefully with the rest of his body to face me. I nodded, confirming the analysis. "I need to prepare for an expedition into the Southern Regions soon. Ensure my sister follows heed on my word of governance.” His lip slightly quivered at the mention of my sister but he immediately straightened it.
"May I ask why this research expedition is of such importance. A Queen who deals with politics with such fervor, has no reason to deal with the sciences,'' he said. Looking at the massive arch doorway, then back at me. "It's securing a valuable trade partner, I protect the man's son, we gain their trust, and the trust of many others, as well as a strategic position upon the Empire's border.” I explained, my tone colder than a midnight blizzard. He paused. "I see my Queen, I was unaware.'' I lifted my hand to give him a sense of calmness. "Do not fret, I ensured that the deal was made aware to everyone at the last minute." He then straightened himself. "But if you're leaving me here with… her, I expect you to at least take pleasure in this trip. You’ve been working yourself to the bone these past few years and it's beginning to scare me." I grunted in annoyance. "A Queen is always on duty." He let out an exhausted exhale, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I understand but I don’t want you to become burnt out. The people rely on well rested royalty." I've heard many of my diplomats say this. A memory of my Mother appearing in my head, her cold words weighing heavy on my mind. (“Ardosus do you want to know how this nation survived.” I stared up at her with gleaming eyes “because we were willing to do all that it took and then some.”) And I will not yield just as my ancestors never did.
I arose from my chair maintaining my stiffness and continued out of the court. An eerie feeling dripped deep into my mind, I could always sense her presence. I shot my head to the left, my sister seductively leaning against a wall near the doors of our court. She still had the same sick delighted smile. "Report!" I sternly said, and she pouted. "You're no fun, at least let me get the jump on you now and then.” She ripped off her man's clothes to reveal her brightly colored dress, with her saggy pointed ears staying relaxed atop of her head, as her lustful lazy eyes locked onto mine with their mystical glare, whilst moving her tail in such a way that it was akin to a mating ritual done only in secret. Her ears twitched as she cleared her throat in a serious manner, a hidden joke to me. I didn’t laugh, I never did. "Our spy’s have discovered that the Empire's forces have moved upon our borders." she said in the same serious tone, continuing her secret mockery. "Dispatch the royal hunters, they dare cross, we kill them." I said, as a subtle growl followed my words. She sighed, pulling a needle from her thigh strap. Spinning it between her fingers. “Are you sure you don't want to use the scalpel?" I shook my head assertively. "They've been doing this on and off. We must show them that we aren't afraid to spew there blood across our land just as we’ve done many times before." I walked off, only looking back to see her pout and strut off in a passive aggressive manner.
She's always liked her little games. I don't blame her though, they are very effective, it's just, now is not the time to play them. I exhaled, recognizing what part of the castle I was in, I stared at the door to the dungeon. It's been a while since I've seen him. I should conduct a visit, maybe think of a way to release him or get him an exit. Seems like I've been saying that forever. I looked to my left, then my right, and walked down. The candles, barely keeping the stairway lit.
I reached the ground floor, and the guard saluted me. I walked up to him as his brow slumped and the corners of his mouth frowned. He misses you.” He said somberly, I nodded. "I thought as much." The guard then handed me the keys, and I began walking through the dungeon. The few people that were in here stared at me from their wooden cell doors, their eyes devoid of any hope as they’re left here to rot, for there unspeakable crimes, and they shall remain here for them, forever left unforgiven as it should be.
I then made it to the end, placing the key into the rusty hole of an iron door, opening it. But this one was unjust. Cartra was in his shackles, bruised and battered. I rushed over with hast, and unlocked the devices that bounded him to the wall, gently laying him onto his side. "Your sister is as fierce as ever." He said, and a burning sensation filled my stomach and head, she has done this many times, but it still hits the same. "I apologize for her brutality, I’ll be sure to prevent her from coming down here.” He giggled. "Yeah last time you did that she straight up ignored you." He spoke, as I touched his rib cage, feeling a singular rib move. I relaxed a bit but was still tense. "Arennt, get a doctor," I yelled. Then hearing the guard run off. "Yeah, he had to string me up before she came down to beat my ass for quote on quote info." I helped Carta flatten out, brushing the hair away from his face, the urge to beat the shit out of my sister washing over me with more vigor than the last. "You haven't been here in a long time," he said. I nodded a little bit, disappointed in myself. "A lot of things have been happening," I replied. "I know you've got quite a burden to carry, especially with talks ending so poorly. Almost hard to believe that almost six years have passed." I nodded.
He is rotting away in here at the mercy of my sister. Theirs no excuse especially for one as powerful as me, I need to get him out without anyone noticing. I felt my shame swirl around in my head, growing every minute he remained here. "I remember when you exploded at me for being a spy and didn't talk to me for two months. I guess I'm lucky that you never really forgot." I nodded remembering the outburst like it was yesterday. "Until I found your letters." I said. "yeah, I got lucky" he uttered with a slight chuckle. "I still find it impressive and brave that you told off the Emperor." I added and he laughed a very prideful laugh. "Sometimes, I think being a stubborn little shit was a good thing." He Spoke as his smile grew. How is that a good thing, look at you the only reason you aren't withering is because I ordered the guard to give you extra food. He seemed to frown, as if sensing my thoughts. “Ardosus, I’m confident I made the right decision.” The doctor came rushing down and stood beside me. "May I, my Queen." I nodded, and he took over. I stood up, and watched an old friend suffer, the only thing stopping me from truly helping him is my damn sister.
This must be done until I can do it discreetly, without attracting the attention of her prying eyes or anyone else's. I could use the supply cart or have a navigator escort him silently out of the lands, so many options but I will only have one chance to get him out alive. "Thank you, Carta. I will forever be in your debt." I said, as my voice grew hiddenly softer. He gently nodded. "From cold to compassionate." he brought his eyes to the ceiling. "I just wish your parents treated both of us with more mercy." I looked down, my brow narrowed and my lips projected disgust "it was the most improper judgment my parents had issued, and an apology will never make up for it." He grunted. "Ardosus, you are not the one at fault remember that." I recomposed myself and raised my head, but it is, I failed to convince them, well in actuality I did, but they felt like they needed to prove a point, I just failed to counter that decision. "I'm sorry,” I muttered as he looked at me, only hearing the slight whispers.
“I must go prepare for an expedition that carries much weight to it." I said firmly. "Aye, I heard, enjoy yourself and don't hit me with the Queen is always on duty bullshit, you have a personal life, ya know." I looked down and nodded, slightly annoyed as I’ve heard that sentence a hundred times. "Oh and the king's son down there. I’ve actually met him, he’s an interesting fellow. I think you’ll enjoy his company." He said. Just before I left, I looked back and was forced to push myself to keep walking.
Hopefully that broken rib isn't anything major, ugh my sister, so brutal and uncaring, doesn't even stop to think about her actions. I walked through the castle's marble halls staring at the paintings of those who came before my mother and father, and At the very end my mothers, her old sickly skin and failing hands could be seen only if you where looking for them of course they were hidden quiet well by the book she held. I then looked towards my father’s painting, his chest puffed out, he seemed uncomfortable probably a sign of his failing spine, and his hair looked to be turning to a subtle gray. Duty above all else. A memory then emerged deep within my mind, a hazy but decipherable memory, a memory of me poking my mom. I wanted to play but she shushed me and told me to listen to the slow and dying voice of an old man talking about policy. I exhaled, as the exhaustion crept in, then looking at my sister's painting and the same eerie feeling followed. I shook my head and then looked at mine or where it’s supposed to be. The truth is I cannot waste hours just for one of our artisans to finish some painting, in fact my parents only did it because it was tradition, and I had begun to take power.
I then remembered when they put me in command of the throne from their bed, long before any official rise to power was initiated. I closed my eyes, pushing away the first letter of a thought. There is no need for that.
I walked up to my chambers, the gold lined room a testament to our kingdom's wealth, but such a small line of gold took years of wars and sheer determination to finally come to realization. Shame that all my ancestors including my parents inevitably died in battle or old age, they would have loved to see where we are now, how their labor laid the groundwork for what we are today.
I turned to my right and walked through me and my sister's old room, every piece of furniture and decoration covered with white sheets. This room has never changed, not even once in my memory. My parents never could decide what to do with this place once we grew up, on top of that they never actually had the time to do so. I went out to the balcony, and stared into the snowy landscape. Our small city, home to many artisans, traders, and hunters. Still bustling with activity from the recent festival. I hadn’t gone to it. I have no reason to, but maybe just. No, my business is here. I turned my attention away from the celebrations in order to discourage any more thoughts, and focused my eyes onto a tiny little cottage in the distance, a faint orange glowed from its tiny windows, as regret piled onto me. If only I wasn’t so naive. I felt my head begin to pound and discomfort sweep across my mind. I quickly looked away from that too, and stared up at the sky seeking its comfort. Everything so distant and uncaring.
I saw a comet streak across the sky, burning its bright colors. They struggle to survive those little things, hoping to find a place called home, controlled by forces not their own. Trying, and trying again to rest. I then looked back down at the small city as it continued to glow in the night, following the buildings to the sea, staring out, knowing that is where I will go tomorrow. Everything relies on my actions. I felt an immense pressure fall upon my shoulders, letting them slump as my mind became numb, my heart starting to pound out of its chest, but the feeling was nothing new, and was just as expected as my mating season. I took my elbows off of the guard rails, and let out a great sigh as I slowly recovered from the sudden attack.
My doctor keeps harping on me to take those medications, but it just makes everything feel blurry and foggy. I can’t have that, not while in this position. I turned around, walking away from the balcony into my old room, and as I closed the connecting door a cold gust blew through, my patches of fur catching the wind with my sensitive ears twitching at the sensation, but remaining warm to the touch. I continued into my bedroom. Hopefully, this treaty will finally force the Empire to take into account its situation. Who am I kidding, they never care about that. Ego, desperation, glory all of it mixs together to create this mess.
I trekked over to my dresser and removed the armor that I had put on for the day. It was more ceremonial than practical, still it leaves an impression on people. Although, I would prefer if it could actually take a hit. I turned to my bed and called it a day. No need for a bath or anything else. I've already done too much to warrant that, all I really just need is a good rest and a soft sensation. I laid down in my bed, its softness comforting me, letting all my worries crumble little by little around me, but it was still hard to sleep. So I played with my tail a little. It's not a lot, but it helps, and as I played with it I gave it a little, too much of a tug, and a clump of fur came off, the common occurrence stopping me. I stared at the patch for a second. The doctor said, this is never a good sign, but it’s not like I can just stop, no matter what condition I’m in. I rolled over to my side forgetting everything or at least trying to. Eventually coming to tire naturally.
While in slumber, nightmares of battle plagued me. Dreaming of a brother carrying the other, who's gone limp and cold, and in the blink of an eye I awoke. With my eyes opening suddenly to the sound of a grandfather clock’s ringing, echoing through the halls, in addition with the sun's rays fighting through my curtains, leaving an orangey tint across the floors and walls.
I arose, without complaint, dawning a more practical suit of armor, as it was lighter, more durable, and designed around the specifications of the region I was heading to. Comfort was not a priority, not that it wasn’t hard for me to get used to such things. Although, with this more open, airy design, it does make me feel a little naked, which is something I could do without.
I walked out of the room, the guards escorting me down the hall, until we reached the gate house of the castle. The carriage accompanied by an armored escort, outside waiting for my presence. I got into the old, but well maintained carriage, remembering all of the times my parents put diplomats into corners, so they could get what they wanted, the secret deals, the plots, and the plans all hidden in here. I believe sooner or later we are going to need to upgrade to one of those armored automobiles. Simply wandering about in horse drawn carriage nowadays is begging for a deadly ambush, especially given the current circumstances. Those traditionalists would be in outrage though, and they make up a decent proportion of the population although they have been historically dwindling since trade as become common practice, but I do believe one minor change wouldn’t cause too much of a fuss.
Once the carriage pulled down to the port. I stepped out and a hoard of people stared at me in a respectful silence, a hidden glow of pride attached to everyone's expressionless faces. A little girl then, ran out of the crowd, running up to me, handing me a flower that should have died long ago, from the winter snow. The guards were quick to try and drag her away, but I signaled them to yield and they returned to staring out into the crowd. I took the flower, and the little girl ran off, back to her parents whom promptly scolded her, although it seemed she didn’t care. I smiled as jealousy crawled across my body, scolding your child out of love maybe one day. My doctor's words ringed through my head. ("Your in your early thirties for fucks sake, do you really think you can wait forever") I still have time, just not right now. I stared at the flower and tucked it into my ear, some raising their eyebrows. I was quick to hide it under my hair to avoid any other behavior that would appear unleaderly. I’ll do my best to care for it, for you little flower girl.
I bid my people farewell, waving goodbye, as they all bowed in my presence. They put all their faith in me, I will ensure that it’s not misplaced like those times before. I walked aboard the warship that had ported for this expedition, its design specifically tailored for these types of travels. The southern lands are not far, this should be fairly calm and easy. I stared out towards the sea, as some workers ran across the dry docks, rushing to prepare another warship, as an Imperial fleet was spotted moving to one of our ports. Thank goodness, I invested in those highways. Still, the Empire starting their war machine, once again to confront us is worrying. Everyone needs to stand together against this threat once more, if we want to prevent their expansion. If they break through our lines and gain a direct route to the nations across our mountains, their potential for resource exploitation would sky rocket, but who knows, maybe they’ll collapse before they even have the chance. Events tend to unfold in a way that is unexpected. Hopefully, the new players know what they're doing. I can’t expect Gurgath to do much though, since it’s just gone through a revolution, which was surprising, but not unexpected.
I watched the gangplank get lifted, the ship captain letting off the horn, its booming sound being carried for miles across the open water. I waved my people goodbye once more, and as we went farther out, they appeared as nothing more than ants. “My Queen, our destination is in sight. We will arrive in a mere two days,” the Royal Guardsman said, kneeling before my presence. I turned around. “Good, you may return to your post,” I said. He then rose, and bowed. “Happy to be of service,” he said. Immediately going off to where he was posted. I went to my quarters, which was like any other soldier's room, no need for special treatment, it’s expensive anyways. I continued over to a desk, opening up a drawer that contained thick, almost bursting files, packed full of documents, I made myself comfortable in an old office chair, its constant squeaking almost unbearable.
I laid out each file, organizing by region, and severity of the issues pertaining to it, each file containing information that ranged from finances, troops all the way down to the winter food stores I had scattered around the kingdom, which was long overdue. My stomach rumbled just at the thought of going through another famine. I continued with my work, going through paper after paper, deciding and stressing over my decisions, until I was confident in there viability. It was probably going to be dark by the time I finished, and when I put down the last paper, I checked the clock and noticed that it hardly made the day go by, every second felt like a minute, and I soon found myself staring out the window watching the waves rise and fall.
Hopefully, I made the right preparations, if war does break out. Those war games we did last year seemed to scare our allies shitless, which could be considered a good sign, although if we want to maintain peace even after the Empire’s collapses then it would be wise to assure them that our tactics will not be used on them to any degree. I felt a shred of hair fall off my head. Never seems to get fucking better does it.
I took the flower out of my hair and placed it into a cup full of water, gently laying my head onto the table and staring at it with lazy eyes. Such a cute little girl. I smiled as I imagined one of my own with me running through the hallways of the castle being a nuisance, playing little games with them, but I know I’ll be just like my mother on the verge of menopause and having kids just to continue the line. I felt my soul begin to wilt as time moved slower, finding myself spending long, lonely hours staring out into the sea from my window only bothered when a decision needed to be made or a minor dispute needed to be put to rest. I slowly grew more and more desperate in my attempts to find something to do but I eventually settled for going back through the papers again and again with no end in sight.
UNGA
My father patted my hair down, taking the last leaf out as he stared at me, his eyes lost. He let out a brief exhale that no son would want to hear. “This is unnecessary,” I said. He rested his head on my chest. “Listen Unga, if you go into that damn jungle alone one more damn time without anyone, I’ll lock you in this damn palace.” I nodded, acknowledging his empty threat, as he lifted his head back up. “Ardosus is going with you, now I expect that you do your country due diligence and help us secure this alliance, because we need this especially after the revolt.” I looked away. “Listen my son, I know you’d rather die out there than live a single second being the heir to the throne, but I took the reins because we needed a leader, and no one else felt confident enough or was ready to step up to the plate.” He grew quiet. “I understand,” I said walking over to my desk a treasure trove of animal biology scattered across it, the drawers packed to the brim with the same exact thing.
I heard my father exhale one last time before exiting my room. I went back to organizing my documents, and saw an old paper I hadn’t seen in awhile. I picked it up, seeing the poorly drawn insect along with the most basic description, a hidden treasure from my childhood, a good childhood for the most part. Maybe if I hadn't been forced to kill during those times, it might have been considered the best. I quickly placed it in its own little drawer, cherishing the memory of my youth.
The Queen of Glenchin should not have been called, I can handle myself out there, I am not ignorant to the dangers, but whatever my father says go’s. Why must he groom me to become a king, I know it’s the next step in our hierarchy of leadership, but surely we could have followed a similar government to that of the constitutional republics farther east, or those of nation states down past the Empire's reach. Maybe I should’ve argued that instead of just twitting my thumbs, looking outside the courthouse at the many exotic birds that hovered around outside, probably would have helped my case. I guess that would’ve failed either way, strong centralized leadership will probably be needed for as long as there is a powerful enemy at our border.
I opened the book I've poured my heart and soul into. The details of every animal I’ve come across in the jungle, meticulously analyzed and documented. I should probably consider myself lucky that my father even considered green lighting this expedition, he probably did so knowing it’s potentially my last. Maybe he thinks I’ll learn something from Ardosus, now that it comes to mind. That would be really funny if he thinks I’m gonna take anything from her, it’s Ardosus we’re talking about, the duty bound Queen, a contributor to the cycle of death, destruction and manipulation. She's just another brick in the wall that I despise. I chuckled a bit. I’ll never be like that, as long as I don’t fall for their tricks, and kill those poor people they send to do their bidding, but maybe this is a gift in disguise. Glenchinits are usually very recluse, maybe I’ll be the first outsider to actually decently document them and do an in depth study into their culture and species. Yes, that would be interesting. I felt my analytical spirit trigger, and I sat down taking out a blank page form the stack on my desk writing about an animal I witnessed today. Describing its behavior, organs and physical features, my pen drifted across the page as the words poured out of me, filling me with bountiful energy.
ARDOSUS
I heard a knock on my door. “Come in,'' I said, with a deep commanding voice. A Royal Huntsman walked in, covered with thick jungle foliage, he bowed with grace. “We have arrived,” he said. I steadily got up from my chair, and stepped outside. The fresh air mixing with the scent of the sea, spices, and recently harvested fruits from the giant market, that came into view the minute my eyes adjusted to the light. Children ran about, adults conducted business, and the chatter of foreign tongues filled the air, as herds of patchy skinned snake and lizard people, as well as the occasional pure skinned wandered about, searching for a good deal, and as I watched I felt the humid warmth run across my fur and skin, the sudden heat forcing me into a pant.
“My Queen, are you okay, aren’t you wearing the armor your sister gave you just for this occasion.” I nodded. “Give me a few hours, Guardsmen, I’ll adjust.” I spoke through short bursts of breaths. I felt as though I was gaslighting him though, this heat is enough to give any Glenchinite heat stroke, even the sickly skinny ones that bear no fat. I began to make my way off the boat, and took notice of the king to this land. Genard, a man of great status, known for his diplomatic skills, and renowned trade deals.
A young man stood next to him, along with two guards, the young man attention focused on an assortment of animals that where locked away in cages, in which he wondered off towards after a few seconds.
Once I had taken in the surroundings, I stepped off the boat's stairs. The King, stepping forward extending his hand. “Ah Ardosus, Queen of Glenchin, it’s an honor to finally turn this long distance relationship into a more closer and bountiful one.” Genard said, I was quick to shake his hand, the sensation of his reptile scales, odd, and the slimy moistness more than uncomfortable. If he wasn’t so cheerful, this would be an awful first impression for anyone. “And my, my, look at you, a true representation of the people of Glenchin, you are taller than most people let on.” I am mostly immune to his charm, since I’m mostly concerned about the business, but it would be best to not start off on the wrong foot. “Please, Genard, no need to humor me, besides I have a land to rule, and I do not want to be forced to listen to your infectious charisma” He developed a great big smile, good we're off on the right foot. “Why yes. I don’t see myself as irresistible, but I do admit, I have a way with people.”
I found my eyes drifted over to the Young man, whom was still by the animal crates, this time feeding them food he had purchased from a local stall. The animals jumping with joy, due to the fact they were most likely rarely fed. He looked at me and waved, and I raised an eyebrow, as I found the scene odd, since most don't really pay much attention to those beings. “Speaking of people.” Genard turned around anxiously. “Oh my” he then turned back around to face me. “Ardosus, please excuse this poor display of manors.” He said, and turned back around, the two guards that had stood in complete silence covering their ears as well as everyone else in the immediate vicinity, whom happened to catch the conversation.
“UUUUUUNNNNNNNGGGGGGGAAAAAA!” He screamed, into the air. I felt my ear drums pop at the first uttered syllable, and soon after a loud and constant ringing filled my ears. I remained firm, not even moving an inch or expressing a hint of discomfort, it still hurt quite a bit and that pain was expressed via the rest of my troops as they moaned and groaned covering their ears. The young man quickly got up, and shamefully ran back over to the king. The king then letting out a sigh of great relief while my soldiers were still clenching their ears slowly recovering. “Sorry about that Ardosus,” his voice, muffled. I nodded my head, barely making out what he said, my hearing returning to me in the seconds that passed. “This is my son Unga, I requested you to accompany him for his expedition, he has all the details.”
I stared at the young man. He just about went over his fathers height, wasn’t as plump as his father, but didn’t have the muscle to show for it either. His body also appeared more scaly with patches of scales, being more prevalent then his skin, which is an oddity especially amongst their race. He stepped forward, extending his hand, with a bright smile lighting up his delicate face, maybe his father isn’t the diplomat. “It’s good to finally make your acquaintance, Ardosus,” he said. I noticed that he seemed kind of nervous, for what reason, I do not know. Probably just ill experience, or excited, since this is probably his first time meeting someone from abroad, and his family is relatively new to such status. I shook his hand without hesitation, his grip light, gentle, soft, still had that weird moistness to it, but I can look past it, now that it’s expected. The interaction still felt alien to me, most try to lead with a commanding presence, but maybe that doesn't work for him.
The small sense of nervousness then disappeared, and was instead replaced by a more concentrating gaze. He stood on his toes in an attempt to meet my height, and then stared deeply into my eyes. I backed away a tad bit, but he followed. “Unga.” Genard said, just before slapping the back of the young man's head with an collapsed fan, Unga scratched the back of his head as a result. “I apologize, it’s just no one like you has come around here, and might I add your body temperature is astonishingly high, which is well… I figured it would be a good opportunity to.” His father then cleared his throat and Unga silenced himself. “I’ll wait by the truck.” He said with a mildly depressed tone. “I apologize again for that rude display. He’s a little odd you know, fascinated by creatures big and small and what not, I assure you, I’m teaching him the ropes of how to lead. Do not fret, I do not plan to leave the throne in the hands of someone who's unaware how to run it.”
I barely saved what Garnard had said to memory, as my interaction with his son was on my mind. Unga, the Prince. Quite an interesting little hobby he has, but his focus should be on the crown and how to effectively run it, still I think listening to his banter would be interesting as well as time consuming, I should try to keep our conversations on business. I watched as Unga slowly walked over to a cart that was being packed with goods, opening a notebook, immediately writing things down with intense speed and as he did I noticed a fight brewing in the shop next to him, and saw Unga, immediately step into action, quickly putting his body between the two, and with a few carefully selected words he was able to establish an agreement between the two parties. My eyes widened, impressed with his ability to resolve such a conflict so eagerly and calmly.
I then looked back at his father, who was still recovering from his embarrassment. “Is he your only son?” I asked. He nodded. “Sadly yes, I wish he was more interested in the throne, and not the last species he’s looking for to complete that damn book.” He said with a hiss, letting out a sigh right after, allowing his frustration to pass. He then looked up at me, his eyes tired and pupils stressed. “Whatever you do Ardosus, ensure to me that he doesn't get himself killed because of his fantasies.” I nodded sincerely, and the king smiled. “Do take care, you’ll leave within the hour.” He said as he began to wander off, attending to other matters. I sighed, knowing I may have a handful.
“Interesting bunch,” I heard a knight mutter. I snapped my fingers, I can't have a diplomatic hiccup, not now. “S-Sorry my Queen,” he quickly stated, as we walked over to the cart. “When do you wish to begin?” I said. He held up a finger as he finished whatever he was doing in his book, closing it on his ending stroke. “I apologize, I just need to write down the things I witness before I forget about them.” I nodded, relating to the rush. “Don’t fret, I understand.” I said, he’s completely drowned in whatever he’s doing, no wonder king Genard is concerned, as his priority's can easily be misplaced… but seeing how well he handled that situation and how willing he was to resolve conflict between his people even if it was minor, Genards concern may be some what none existent. Although he might have gotten lucky… One can only hope he didn’t and that was all skill, but even then he was still willing. “When would you like to leave?” I repeated, and his eyes immediately shot up with great energy and excitement. “As soon as possible of course.” he said, with energetic delight. “Very well, I will begin to have my soldiers unpack our cargo.” I said. “Yes, yes, do that please, we mustn't waste time.” he responded. I nodded to my guards, some of them quickly dispersing to give word. Unga beginning to attend to other matters, checking cargo, and the conditions of vehicles being brought along.
I walked over to him. Doesn't he have people to do this? “May I ask what we are looking for?” He handed me a piece of paper as he worked, I stared at the beast sketched out on it. “What is this?” I said, slightly taken aback by the aggressive features. “It’s an Emit… it charges into its prey and once it’s down, starts tearing into it with jagged teeth. Viscous things,” He said with excitement. I figured this was just to closen relations between us, but I guess it was also out of concern too. “But this is an opportunity of a lifetime, no one's ever examined one that wasn’t rotting in the woods,” He added.
“I don’t mean to be rude, but why are you so into this?'' I said. He sighed, as if he'd heard the question a thousand times. “Well, why does a painter paint, why does a craftsman craft, why does a dancer dance, well simply put, because they feel compelled,” He said, while opening up a crate filled with books. I guess I understand, although the analogies weren't necessary and it still doesn't explain why you feel compelled. He did put some heart into the speech though, I’ll give him credit for that. “I have my father to thank for this convoy and books, but it’s sad to know that he thought he could weaponize my desire to document animals to help with the bureaucracy of the state.” He placed the notebook into the crate.
And theres Genard worry and now it is also mine now that he’s said it. This isn't good for both our interests long term, as all the empire has to do is kill Genard, and his nation will be at there mercy, do too his sons lack of will. I stared at Unga. Doesn't he realize this, he so selflessly, jumped to resolve a conflict with no benefit to him and yet he doesn't realize what would happen to his people if he doesn't rise to the occasion. "Your lack of interest in the throne could lead your people to destruction," I stated. I knew it was inappropriate, but it needed to be said, considering the stakes. He nodded, his eyes taking a more gloomy mood. It felt like I was kicking a puppy. He picked up another book and began looking through it in an attempt to completely dodge my comment. "I know I cannot make you answer, but think about it" I said, about to walk away. "I think if I were to gain power it would be the ruin of me and my people. You see, I refuse to be a part of the system." He said, I turned back around and stared intently at him. "Do you understand?" He gently added, touching the paper of the book with a very sincere expression. I remand still, trying to decipher what he just said, partly understanding it. I don’t know why he’s being so vague, I should keep an eye on him. Usually those people always have something up their sleeve.
“To be honest, Ardosus, I wonder my father will outlive me just so I am not compelled or forced upon that role.” He then closed the book, and closed his eyes as the sun shined on him, its rays touching every part of his skin, he snickered. “I guess one can hope.” he said, closing the crate, latching it shut. “Thank you for answering.” I said, I wonder if what he said was truly on his mind, then that would be the first time I’ve heard any prince speak truly about themselves and not out of fear of letting to much slip, definitely would be a rare breed but that can make enemies, and to speak without restraint is an easy tool for others to us against you. I've done that many times.
He smiled, and nodded a guard then approaching him. “Everything's loaded.” He said Unga, then facing me “well, we’ll wait for you by the gate." He said as he walked up to the side of a truck, waving goodbye and I responded with the same motion, then continuing over to our warship. All of its cargo, already unloaded and organized, which was expected from Glenchin's finest. Soldiers were running left and right, preparing trucks and weapons, all while a Royal Guardsman then approached me. “My Queen, we are almost finished.” I nodded and he quickly went to assist anyone that looked as if they needed help. I watched as our convoy grew, boarding the first vehicle that turned on its engine, driving me through town until we finally came to Unga’s convoy at the entrance to the city.
The populace all staring at the king's son, talking amongst each other as he sat on the roof of a truck, the populace all possessing delighted smiles as if happy to see him going out again, I then noticed a man whom was talking to Unga, and as they both nodded, Unga handed a pair of wrapped paper’s to him and the man ran off with giddy delight, while Unga went back to analyzing the jungle, he seemed more excited than ever even, strange considering he’s gone out there more then once, usually with repetition everything seems to fade and all sense of excitement with it, yet he still seems inclined to go out there.
I then heard the roaring engines of more trucks approach from behind, checking the mirror I saw the rest of my convoy form up behind me. Unga then taking notice gave me a thumbs up and I performed the same gesture, he jumped down entering his truck through the window. “Alright, we’re good.'' I heard a soldier say in his native tongue, and Ungas' column began moving forward the truck's roofs just barely touching the gate, and after a short while, we passed the ancient walls of the city.
Paved road became dirt with scattered houses and farms dotting the road, with a large jungle that could be seen from miles away appearing in more detail as we took a slight turn with the road. A few miles went by and the dirt road turned to mud with the sun disappearing under a blanket of leaves. I heard the calls of birds and sounds of tiny animals rustling in the brush. This place feels more alive, unlike back home where it can be dead for days if the weather demands it. I brought my attention back to the outside, immediately seeing the dirt road disappear, being replaced with harsh roots and black dirt, and when I was finally able to see through the dense canopy just for a moment, the day had turned to dusk.
I guess this is why Unga likes this place it has a special aura to it, a sense of life and wealth, It's no wonder he takes great interest in the creatures and plants that harbor these jungles. I felt the trucks begin to slow down, and stopped at a clearing that seemed to welcome us into the deepest parts of the jungle where no machine could go through without having a path carved for it.
I stepped out of my truck and approached Unga, who was looking at a map, stroking his chin as his finger ran across the paper. “Is there a problem?” He looked up at me and shook his head “it’s not really a problem, more of an inconvenience.” I leaned in. “How so.” he showed me the map “well you see the clearing is supposed to go up to here, but it stops right here” he said, placing his finger down right on the road leading up to a circular patch. “So we're going to have to walk more.” I said. He nodded, and I sighed, frustrated at the fact that I’m going to have to deal with this miserable weather more. He was then immediately taken away by some guards, discussing the gear that should be assigned to each man.
I suppose I’ll have to tell my troops. I looked towards my group as they began to set up camp, and by the time daylight disappeared, the tents were pitched and fires were lit, everyone huddling together talking and joking. Of course none of that suited me, I needed peace and quiet in order to go through my thoughts, and thank goodness there is always one group that is always silent. I found my way to that group sitting with them while they ate and looked around, their silence providing me a little bit of rest. I analyzed their scars trying to guess who was a young blood and who was a veteran, which is probably a dumb little game because almost every single man in Glenchin is a veteran, it would probably be better to gauge how bad of a fight they got into, it usually follows, the bigger the wound the more desperate the fight type of hierarchy, but some of those could be training accidents, though to say that still doesn't count as some kind of experience is foolishness.
I adjusted my armor and felt the cool air of the night rush in. It was still warm and humid but not to the point like it was before, which is a blessing considering how bad I was panting the minute I stepped off the boat. Hopefully my soldiers aren't worried about me, no they shouldn't be, they've seen me crawl back to camp before, with my body covered in wounds. The memory then came onto me the hoard of men rushing me and carrying me into the med tent with panicked voices all around. That was a scary moment, I'm surprised I remembered those details, considering how blurry everything was.
I looked around and saw Unga talking to a mix of my people and his. He cracked jokes while talking about his many adventures into these woods, in one story he found a cave covered in crystals that shined beautifully because of a crack in the ceiling of said cave, and although I was looking for peace I cannot deny that I listened in, letting my mind clear from the problems at home, which I felt guilty for doing. I guess even sitting with the quiet ones doesn't make it easy to focus when you are surrounded by banter.
I continued to keep my attention on Unga, listening to all his adventures, noticing something in all of them. He seemed rather organized, prepared, and self-sufficient, with the ability to learn new things, it’s no wonder he was checking supplies he could do it all himself easily, and his father says he's trying to teach him the ropes, hell, the kid can mostly teach himself, but of course he's not seeking that position. I sighed. Another thing to stress about, hopefully Genard can make it work, so I can keep this alliance.
he then made a quick gesture signifying, he was leaving and then disappeared into the darkness, my ears following him as he ran off into the woods, shouldn’t he be taking guards with him, either way, what could have made him perform such an action, he should know it's dangerous out there especially since he’s not the strongest. I wanted to follow but it felt rude to peer into his business. No, he’s the only heir to a nation that I need to keep allegiance with. It would be wise to ensure that he is not ambushed. I got up, and followed entering a little away from his insertion.
The jungle was covered in a mist of darkness, but I could manage as most Glenchinite eyes are sharp. The terrain was also extremely different from home rocks, branches, and small hills littered the landscape with high frequency. which made everything a little more difficult to navigate especially stealthy. I then saw the top of his head through the trees, the short needle hair giving him away easily. He stopped and I did soon after. He sat down and seemed to begin performing some sort of action, I carefully went around the side hoping to catch a glimpse of what he was doing, and once I had reach my desired position, I came across a bush hid behind the shrubbery the leaves concealing me well, although my glistening white hair and yellowish orange eyes did not help in that matter.
I watched as he smashed a bunch of herbs together and combined them into a fluid, pouring it into a syringe. He looked up and scanned the area around him, double checking multiple times, then carefully wrapping the dart in a white plastic foil, letting out what seemed to be a sigh of relief, then beginning his walk back to the camp. This filled me with an odd sense of suspicion. I made sure to follow him back from a distance, his nervouness growing as he goot closer. I almost could sense discontent, as he stepped back through the foliage back into the clearing, odd behavior his first impression didn’t set off any idea of nefariousness. He then went into his tent. I think I should confront him on this, but I’ll see what he does in the coming days, I'll be sure to watch myself though.
The night then passed and the next day was filled with trekking through harsh terrain and dealing with heavy swarms of bugs, which Unga's guards didn’t have a problem with due to there thick scales but unfortunately for us Glenchinits, we had a poor time with it, somehow they kept getting underneath our armor, I don’t even know how my troops could even manage and the heat today, this is one of those few moments I wish I was this kingdom's inhabitants, their cold-bloodedness would be a lifesaver. I then felt a dizzy spell kick in as heat penetrated my mind, but I kept it together, then there was a tingling sensation on my arm again, the sound of a bugs wings replaying over and over in my head, I smacked my arm, this time with the force of a giant the sound echoing throughout the group as they all turned their heads to look at me.

“Ardosus, here have this.” Unga said, handing me some kind of foul smelling thick liquid, I nodded and applied it to my armor, the bugs soon dissipating. “I made it in advance for your people but forgot about it, sorry, here have the jar.” He said, I held the massive jar in my hand, and handed it to the royal guard behind me, who was quick to apply the liquid. “I can only imagine what it must feel like for you down here.” He said, opening his notebook. “It must be almost hellish, with the fact that you're used to extreme cold.” I exhaled. “This journey has been a true test of will.” I said through pants, he stared at me. Please don’t ask if I’m okay. “Hey everyone why don’t we take a few.” Everyone stopped, and I did too with me collapsing where I once stood, Unga, then left and fetched water and an ice pack from a cooler, that his people were carrying, then running back over, handing the water bottle to me.
I remembered the serum he mixed and thought for a moment trying to gauge his intentions, but as far as I could tell they weren't hostile and beside I was dying, so I took it, sniffing the liquid inside and as I did, he pressed the ice pack against my head, the relieving cold feeling utterly heavenly, and to ensure maximum comfort I took control of the ice pack, prompting him to remove his grip. “Recommendation Ardosus, remove some of your armor pieces it’s not worth getting heat stroke over, I can tell you that, also I recommend the same for your men.” I nodded, looking at my soldiers in which they promptly removed what they could, and as I looked back at Unga, he began staring into my iris.
“Shame I can’t see the color, the only thing I can sense is heat, I guess it comes with its perks though.” he said, where did that come from that's an extremely out of nowhere comment. “Do you mind?” he said as he took out his notebook. I shook my head, not knowing what he was planning to do. He placed his pencil on the paper and started sketching out an outline of me. “Sorry if this seems rude, it’s just, you're the only one that's really caught my eye.” And a few minutes later he was done. A perfect drawing is some sort of weird spotted vision, odd, seeing something like this, still it’s interesting to see how they view the world. He quickly moved to the other section of paper, jotting down every little observation that had crossed his eyes over the past couple of days. Completely immersing himself at his task, I bet the outside world appeared in the form of a blur to him, and after he wrote all he could, he closed the book.
“Thank you” he said with the largest smile I’ve ever seen anyone posses, again that feeling crossed over me, he has something to call his own it’s private and he enjoys it, it fulfills him, I’m not saying my title as Queen is empty, but I do wish I had something more private more tailored to my liking, although one must realize that there is nothing I can do for I am Queen and I bare a responsibility that must be cared for with all my attention. “Why the long face.” He said, I shook my head snapping myself out of it. “It’s nothing, just some minor issues flying through my head.” I said, as I stood up. “yeah, I have those far too often tiny little gremlins stabbing your mind, it’s nothing to others but to us there everything.”
He then walked forward, and my troops rose, as I stood next to Unga hoping to extend our conversation, Unga then sighing for reasons I do not know. “It’s usually my father beraiding me, I know he does it because he cares for me, and my people even if it doesn't seem like it.” Ending the sentence with an exhausted smile I stared at him, until finally deciding that it was appropriate to comment. “He’s a good man, just concerned.” I said, Unga giggled a bit. “I know but even concern can wrought destruction, most citizens see him as a man who bullies his son no matter how many times I’ve explained it, few understand.” He said, I nodded knowing the feeling. “Do not fret. It's good that people are willing to listen to you; it's a sign of trust.” He nodded, still disheartened. “I just wish they understood, and he understood.” He seemed defeated in a sense. I've encountered this situation many times. The best thing to do is be patient. “Understanding comes with time, so when people ask you how you feel about your father, ensure to do your best to explain it and if they still don’t get it just say it again, there will be times when they don’t understand at all but remember as a leader you must go with what you think is the best decision but that doesn't mean you should block out the criticism.” He nodded and sighed as if he was a boy listening to his parents preach to him. “Yeah, leader, sorry just.” He responded with heavy words. “Nonsense, you command these troops with ease, and easily stand on your own.” He developed a slight smile, a subtle chuckle following it and then he remained silent obviously keeping his thoughts to himself, I did not push the issue onto him, that would just cause friction, the kind I don’t want.
After much more trekking, we reached a clearing. Clear glistening water lying in the middle of this place, fed by a stream farther inland hidden by large intimidating trees, with its features being mostly flat and even, I wonder why no one has built a village or some kind of structure, in this beautiful place. “Here this is it, everyone, find your spots.” And as Unga uttered those words, we took all our gear off and my soldiers along with his dispersed to set up camp. I walked over to the large body of water, looking up the stream that fed into it, a rush of heat coming over me, as hypnotizing cool water filled every thought in my mind, I followed the river until it reached another pool farther away from the camp the area perfectly covered in dense foliage making it private in every way imaginable, the water, crystal clear without a trace of impurities, not even a grain of dirt could be seen in it. I took my armor off along with all my clothes, gracefully walking into the cool refreshing pool. My body's muscles, loosening.
This trip has been interesting with less ballrooms and aristocrats and more normal everyday things, to be honest Unga probably helps with the normal part, something I think an aristocrat should learn, instead of speaking in tongues, those aristocrats, always beating around the bush, I hate it when I am forced to do that, makes everything take more time and causes everyone a headache, especially when things get lost in translation. I stared off into the canopy above trickles of light coming down, touching my body and the water around me.
Unga is not what I imagined that's for sure but he's a joy to have around, what he catalogs might be a good bedtime read something that would help me unwind and stop me from tearing off my hair my, my, I can already hear his voice describing the different functions that organs play inside an organism, I don’t know if I could though, I go through hundreds of documents everyday, and that is mostly due to my ability to out pace my advisors every single day.
I wonder how my sister is fairing back home, it’s been awhile since she’s handled any administrative task, ah, who am I kidding she's probably flirting with everyone in an attempt to get dirt on every little thing, she's beyond a user, hopefully, she doesn't get to Unga, especially since, he's a fresh target for her, that would be tragic. Funny I haven't even heard Unga swear he must be a pure little soul, qand his touch really shows it, I smiled, I can almost recount the handshake one for one it was so soft, I giggled a little at the thought, weird it has been awhile since I’ve done that. I frowned. I think I should call it quits right there I still have things to do.
I then slowly arose from the water putting on my clothes and dawning my armor once again. Hopefully that will be all I need for the rest of the day. I heard a branch break in the distance, my ears turning to face the sound, then twisting my body and raising my sword in the same direction, nothing, no wait, footsteps moving fast I won’t be able to match. I lowered my sword and quickly returned to camp and spoke to the guards about what I heard. “Unga went into the woods, but I don’t think he was near you.” One said. “We’ll remain on look out, as it could be some of the not so pleasant local wildlife.” Another affirmed, I nodded. “Well then, I’ll leave you too your posts.” I said and they all nodded.
He didn’t seriously wander off alone again. “Did he bring guards with him?” I added, they all shook their heads. I sighed out of frustration. “Where did he go?'' They all pointed to a dense patch of foliage, and I quickly took off, slowing down once I picked up his scent. I followed it, the smell growing stronger, as I transferred to a stealthy rush, stopping when I saw him standing in a little open patch with a dart gun in hand, staring at some plants, analyzing and writing in his notebook. I sat down, staring, should I make my presence known, no, I shouldn’t interfere in whatever he’s planning, and as I looked more closely he seemed worried both trying to pay attention to his work, and what was happening around him.
Once dusk came he stopped whatever he was doing and went back to camp with a look of disappointment. I followed, maintaining my distance, making sure my arrival to camp was as inconspicuous as possible, ensuring the only people that were aware of me were my people. Should I be watching him, I exhaled as I walked into my tent. laying down after taking off my armor and padding, he shouldn’t be heading out there by himself, he could easily be torn apart by anything down here. I turned to my side. Hobbies, hobbies, this one is going to get him killed. I then looked at my tail, the spot I tugged on some time ago just beginning to regrow but it seemed hampered in its recovery, just like the doctor said would happen. I didn’t dwell on it and quickly went to sleep. I awoke the next morning, with the chatter of men celebrating and partying, enjoying themselves over their arrival here, the last few days of heat and humidity must have really been getting to them. They splashed and jumped in the water. It was interesting watching the Royal Guard, the most uptight and honorable detachment of the kingdom enjoy themselves in play.
Unga, was all the way across the pond staring at his book, tapping his head with a pen, until he finally got up and entered his tent. I made sure to be in his way the minute he left his humble little abode. “Unga.'' I said he stared, throwing his tranq rifle onto his back. “Sorry Ardosus, but I must be on my way.” He said then walking past me. I watched as he delicately waddled through the same foliage.
I then followed after waiting for a minute, ensuring that I wasn’t going to alert him to my presence, we both arrived at the spot from last time, and I approached the point where I last watched him as he continued analyzing the plants from yesterday. I watched for a few minutes still perplexed by this behavior, my finger tapping on a branch slowly speeding up as time went on.
This has gone on long enough, I should make my presence known, it’s not like there's anything to hide. I slowly got up and took a step forward feeling the vibration of a stick breaking in half and the sudden snap that followed, waking the jungle, Unga then turning around aiming the dart gun at me, sighing once he realized it was me.
I then heard the pounding something pounding onto ground and a beast flew out of the woods head first towards us. I knew, deep down in my gut, he wasn't going to react to that in time. I charged forward my blade low to the ground to protect Unga, the beast suddenly changing directions, hitting me from an angle. I flew backwards, and felt its teeth rip into my shoulder. The sound of my flesh tearing, giving me an unsettling feeling, my form weakening as the pain grew worse.
I felt my back hit Unga, as I lost balance, and we both fell backwards into denser foliage, which quickly gave way to a hill. I grabbed Unga’s arm, and pulled him into my chest as we barreled down and when we finally hit bottom, my sword plunged into the ground beside me as I heard the beast charge again sinking its teeth into my already wounded shoulder. I let out a scream, and then it dropped, and I slowly raised my upper body, seeing a dart implanted into its side.
“Well at least my illegal concoction wasn’t wasted.” He said, pulling the bolt back on his dart gun. I layed back down going into a pant, and he took notice of the gaping wound in my arm, immediately dragging me to the base of a tree, tending to it, his hands, moving with great care, and speed. “Sorry.” He said. “No, I shouldn’t have been just staring at you.” I refuted. “Nonsense, I should've known my attempts to leave would’ve been met with suspicion.” He said as if disappointed in himself I felt my head get lighter and in response he moved quicker. “What's your blood type?” I could barely make out his words, everything was getting so foggy.
Tears then began to form blurring my vision, and I fought them as they crawled out, and as I did my throat choked up and a gaping hole formed in my mind, that only got bigger and bigger… I served my people shouldn't a part of me feel good or fulfilled. I, I want to cry, no, I can’t I-I’ll look weak. “Hey don’t pass out.” He said his voice getting more and more distant, was it a life worth living without anything else to do except lead. I wonder if I found anything I loved, what would I feel besides this hole that's just growing or maybe it was always this big and I just ignored it. Where are all these thoughts coming from all of a sudden? Why aren't I casting them out like every other blasphemous thought? Have I just finally taken notice of what I’ve failed to do myself… No matter this is what I was born into, this was my duty, this was my life, and that won’t change now wont it, it’s not like one can try again.
I then felt a sharp jab of pain in my wrist the pain bringing me back a little, and as I brought my head down, I saw Unga then pierce his skin using a needle connected to a tube, life giving blood soon coming into my veins. It was risky, field medics detest this solution, but sometimes there is no choice and as I slowly recovered, Unga continued with patching up my wound. I bit my lip at every stitch and when he closed off the blood and started attaching the gauze, tears began going down my cheeks.
I wiped them away before Unga took notice, smiling secretly as a warm fuzziness swelled within me, thankful that all was not lost, but at the same time that hole still remained, surely it will go away after some time, surely it must just be shock, or am I lying to myself. I felt the last wrap of a bandage, and watched as Unga layed out a blanket that he held in his little satchel laying me down onto it.
"Sorry." He said again, with a guilt stricken voice, I quietly giggled. "Hey, I didn’t die and you're still alive, I think that's something to be congratulated for." my words not even phasing him. He got up his shoulders slightly sagging, with his feet dragging on the ground. my eyebrows pointed down, as I grabbed his arm before he went out of reach. "Please be easy on yourself, I’m used to this." He nodded, continuing over to the Emit.
It's not like he could do anything else although I wouldn't mind it if he stayed next to me for a little bit, I've never actually come that close to passing out from blood loss and... Dying, even when it looked like I was right on the border of it, from my past engagements. I flinched as I felt the wound begin to sting, and burn intensively, sighing as it did. Here we go again.
I looked back at Unga hoping he would take my mind off the pain. Watching as he viciously tapped his pen on his notebook, from what I could see, he was only able to write down a few things before he inevitably walked back over to me. "Sorry, I should be more mindful." He said, as he checked my pulse, I shook my head. “No, I've been there before.” The image of a soldier carrying his dead brother flashed into my head again. I felt powerless in that moment, knowing nothing I said could have comforted him, shame he left. Maybe I could’ve apologized, or rectified my wrong in some way.
"I've been meaning to ask about the creatures of your lands." Unga said, knocking me out of my head, his cool, smooth hand gliding across my skin. "They’re few in number." I answered and he chuckled. "Oh I doubt that, I bet there's many to be discovered in those snowy mountains of yours, you just gotta look hard enough." He said, staring at me with a warm smile. "Doubt my father would ever approve a voyage though." an idea then popped into my head as a chance to strengthen our countries' alliances appeared, this could benefit us all. "I could just tell him, I wish to undertake your education in leadership." I said, he pondered for a moment. "No that doesn't feel right I couldn’t lie to my father" he rejected, as I picked up a hint of disgust. "I never said I wouldn't do it." He pondered longer. "If I finish this, and am no longer held back by anything, then I will most likely take your offer, then." He said, I nodded noting what was said. "But if I am to finish and keep up my end of the deal." He got up with new found focus and commitment, beginning to jot down things onto his notebook. I smiled internally.
"I have to force myself to stay focused, it’s weird how you can just summon it." I said, I heard him slow down on his writings. "Oh, trust me I’ve been there before, had to read an entire text book on governance." I almost let a laugh slip, knowing what book he read. "By Arbint Wesker." I said "yes that one, I swear that books in everyone's library." He said, madly. "I've meet the man before," I stated, he raised his head. "Is he as bland as his writings?" I silently giggled. "No, in fact, we conversed about his exploits in the Pettus continent, how he conquered the place to found his own nation. He talked about it with such vigor and pride, but when he reached the end, he seemed saddened and discontent." I heard Unga, stop his pen to listen closely. "He told me he wished he added an ending to that book." Unga nodded. "I can see why." Unga said, looking over the animal's body.
"They live just about thirty years but those were the ones we found rotting, who actually knows how long they live, and from the looks of this one he seems ancient.", "as ancient as my kingdom." I said, he laughed. “You wish, no, just an adult, a perfectly healthy one from the looks of it.” I slowly lifted myself to a sitting position, my kingdom. What does it mean to me? Is it a burden or a duty, I stared at my tail as I shifted it back and forth, what am I talking about, treason. I stared at Unga who was still writing away, what he does is barely a burden for him. I grabbed my tail and hugged it, something I never thought I’d do again, the pressure slowly releasing.
I continued looking at Unga with an almost jealous gaze, as he happily wrote away, the world melting away around him. Maybe I can learn something from him, maybe he can help me process these thoughts. I opened my mouth slightly, and then clenched it shut, sharing these words would compromise myself and my kingdom and although I do hold a hint of trust in him it would be safe not to trust him like I would an advisor, for he is of a separate nation. I noticed him looking right at me as I thought, and his eyebrow slanted up.
“Is something wrong?” I was startled a little but then again it's not like a made an effort in hiding it, he walked over and had me lay back down on the blanket. “You know I've heard how much of a busy body you are maybe take this as an opportunity to just rest.” And as I layed there. I remembered he is not all about his future ascension to the throne, maybe I was just looking for excuses, or maybe it was my sister getting to me, I sighed maybe I should just kick all these thoughts out of my head.
"So are you dead set on the deal." I asked, He nodded. "Seeing your land and such a different species of people with such a distinct culture, why it’s, an opportunity of a lifetime." he said, the energy transferring to me, as he became more and more excited from just imagining the prospect. I couldn’t help but feel happy for him, as he finished the last couple sentences in his notebook. "I’ll just make sure not to hide when you're wandering our lands.” He giggled. “Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure my eyes will catch you in all that snow.”
I then noticed the beast twitch, and I grabbed my sword, Unga, quickly placing his hand on my arm. "Relax, the things not gonna be moving for a while, but we should still get moving, preferably as far away from the Emit as possible." I nodded and Unga helped me up, guiding me through the jungle, the lush foliage surrounding us every step of the way as we did our best to navigate. I was unsure about the location in which we fell, we could have landed anywhere to be honest. "Do you know where we are?" I said with a little concern, he shook his head. "Completely unfamiliar with this place but I've been in this situation more times than I would bother counting." He had this confident tone and walk, to him, but it only made me more worried.
We continued through the jungle Unga walking as if the thought of being lost and alone in the woods brought pleasure to him. “What would you think of it, me being there at your castle?” He said smiling, the thought of my damn sister then crossed my mind, I’ll deal with her it shouldn't be hard. “Many wouldn’t mind I just wonder if my sister would approve,” I said, he turned his head towards me with a skeptical look. “How so.” I let a minor exhale slip. “I don’t know how to describe it, she cares about our people, just not in the way you’d think. She isn’t focused on preserving my current status quo, more on becoming a dominant power.” He looked back. “A conquer.” I paused, that would explain a lot. “In truth, I do not know.”
I then heard more footsteps in the woods, and I readied my sword Unga seeming to have heard them too, as he immediately took cover behind me. “Hear anything else.” He said, I shook my head angling my ears in all directions, and as time passed, it was safe to say who ever was watching, was no longer there, or has found there post. Unga then stepped out from behind me. “So back on topic, do you think that your sister will be a problem?” I paused, remembering all the ways she’s gotten to people. “Please don’t take her as a sufficient threat if you decide to come along, I know her tricks, I’ll protect you.” He nodded, and looked out into the jungle. “Good.” He exhaled. “I’ve always wondered why people are like that, how they justify their actions of destruction and manipulation.”, “it comes from a good place.” I said, he sat down on a tiny rock and I sat next to him. “Yeah everyone says that, yet they end up killing hundreds if not thousands with there decisions.”, “so that’s what you think the cycle is.” he nodded.
“That's why Unga, I keep her on a short leash, because my people don’t want that conflict.” I saw his eyebrows shot up a little and his mouth open slightly. “I-I see.” He said, as he tapped his notebook. “But as you know the status quo won’t change, I for one know that, and that's why I hope to completely retract from everything it touches, avoiding the cycle.” I shook my head. “It's not about the world Unga, it’s about your home.” He chuckled a little. “If it really started at home, the world would be a whole different place.” He's such a little pessimist for a cheery person. Maybe he just hides it, like I do but this sounds like the root of his problems, and if I can fix that.
I extended my hand and placed it on his shoulder. “Unga, I understand, but is it really worth letting your people fend for themselves?” I shouldn’t be showing compassion, I should be strong-arming him, yet I can’t bring myself to do it, do I, No, this is to just helping this nation in the future nothing more, he looked at me, and let out a few nervous pouts of air from his nostrils. “C-can you not do that.” he said, and I let go. “Sorry, sorry, it’s just, you're really hot.” Of course their attractiveness to heat. He lowered his head and spoke. “T-thank you.” he then began to flip through the pages of his notebook, and I peeked over his shoulder viewing the strange illustrations of creatures.
“Your drawings are interesting.” I saw his eyes glimmer with excitement, as his mind was taken off of what just happened. “Yeah, they must be completely different from the way you see them, oh, can you draw, I’d love to see how they look from your perspective.” He looked up at me, shoving the pencil up in my face. I giggled quietly. “Sorry that was something I put down when I was a child.” He then looked down in disappointment. “Oh, I see.” I felt bad for crushing his little dream, I could probably take him to one of our artisans and have him draw a animal, for him or I could have them draw me, I smiled subtly I think this is the first time my mind as been clear, I placed my hand over my heart feeling it beat less frantically, I guess Carita’s wish has come true, it’s been awhile since I’ve felt like this it's refreshing really.
I then saw Unga turn blue, and reach into his satchel. “Oh no.” He sighed, as he pulled out a wrapped piece of paper similar to the one he gave that person. I got up, and brought my eyes upon it. The paper covered in markings, with locations of ore deposits, and fertile soil, as well as possible trails and roads. “If I lose this.” He said, his pupils, dilating. “We’ll never see the economy bounce back.” He spoke with urgency and dread, strange. “I thought you said you wanted nothing to do with your cycle.” He nervously fiddled with the paper a little. “Just because I want nothing to do with it doesn't mean I want to watch people starve.” I nodded acknowledging my error. “Sorry.” I replied, he shook his head. “It's fine, you just wanted to make sure I wasn’t a hypocrite.”
He then placed the paper back into his satchel nervously, bringing his eyes up to me once he finished. I guess there is more depth to this than I imagined. “Whether or not you want to be king, at least I know you’ll do good by your people.” I said, he developed that same shocked expression, just a little less prevalent. “I like my people, they’ve been put through too many tests these past couple of years, they deserve to have that pressure alleviated.” He lowered his eyes and stared past me, as if reminiscing on something. “But I should’ve have known that you cared, considering what you did at the market.” he shot his eyes back up. “What… Oh yeah, that one, yes the market gets tense, I mostly end up walking through there just to help people get along.” He said with surprise. “And the people seem to love you for it.” I replied, he nodded with a gentle smile, and the sun began igniting the horizon in a bright purple and orange.
“Well it’s the ending of a another day, we should set up camp before it gets too dark.” He said looking out at the setting sun. We found a decent clearing farther ahead in the jungle, and began to set up our little hideaway. I gathered any wood that wouldn’t put too much strain on me, while he expertly set up our shelter, and started a fire. Even though this place was so alien, Unga somehow made it feel homey, but I still had my intense desire to return home, I must for the sake of my people.
“I hope they take notice of our little camp.” I said. “Oh you can barely see a bonfire flicker in all this jungle, it’s mostly a stroke of luck to find any civilization out here.” The mood was better when he was quiet, ugh, this expedition wasn’t supposed to take much time and if we're gone for a couple of days. The thought of my sister running the show for longer than she was supposed to made my anxiety break out, my tail shaking the more I thought about it, I corrected myself quickly, unfortunately he took notice, and seemed humbled by it.
“Don’t worry I can find a way out, I just need to get high enough.” I nodded, I can’t appear like that again it makes me appear weak. He smiled more. “So don't let those things plague you, I’ll make sure to get you home soon enough.” He added, I nodded, hiding any other emotion that dared to show its face, and as the fire flickered. He climbed into the little makeshift tent, and I soon followed, nervousness was dressed across his face. “Do you want me to sleep outside?” I said, he shook his head and I felt my body grow uncontrollably hotter, and as result he turned to face the other way.
“Sorry about our first encounter,” he said. “Oh, it was harmless, I'd happily help you if you have any questions about are race.” I said, he then turned back over his eyes locked in a trance. “Well then.” he spoke, and after those words were uttered, a long night ensued of me explaining our culture, heritage, and psyche, he stayed awake every minute without even nodding off and somehow through it all he even was able to keep me awake too without a hint of drowsiness, until the fire ran out of wood and he was forced to stop, seems the only thing that can really turn him on is research. I laughed internally at the absurdity of it, maybe, I should stop seeing this entirely as an alliance and maybe separate Unga, from his nation.
My sister would hate me right now if she heard my thoughts, she always sees the world as this nation versus nation scenario, and I don’t blame her, it’s just sometimes, I wish she’d shut up, and go away, but who am I to say anything, I’ve acted the same way before too, and Carta payed for it, if I only found those letters sooner, if I could've had my parents seen a different approach. The night then carried me away into a deep slumber. Calmness coming over me in my sleep, another thing I haven't experienced in a long time. At first I thought I died because of how foreign the feeling was, but I recognized it and attempted to welcome it, although it was fleeting. Sadly.
ARDOSUS’S SISTER
I sighed, as more paperwork was brought before me. It's a wonder how my sister does these things, with such commitment and speed. I then looked out of the window and picked up my little telescope, and stared at the little city, watching my people go back and forth, doing their day to day errands, with the kids annoying the adults. It's a beloved sight to behold. The fact that this safety has been achieved, due to my clever and headstrong sister, and with the assistance of my shadowy hand is nothing more than fulfilling, as mother said. (“Keep this place safe at all costs and you’ll be satisfied.”) And I shall, just like my sister has baring, the brunt of it all.
I do wish she stopped this alliance bullshit, as well as those non-aggression pacts and treaty’s, all these fucking nations are exquisite pieces of animal excrement compared to us. Our people shouldn’t be brought down because of them, in fact they should be giving us tribute for all these invasions we’ve taken the brunt of. All well, at least our people are well fed and clothed with roofs over their heads. still though Glenchin should stand on its own without the look that other nations are keeping us afloat. I want the Glenchin people to feel proud of their kingdom, and every other nation to look on in envy, but I’ll trust my sister's judgment. It's gotten us out of many problems once before, and I’m sure her judgment will now.
I looked back at the paperwork, this can wait, there are more important matters to attend to, and I made my way out of the castle, getting into a truck, it’s windows tinted pitch black, I then ordered the chauffeur to bring me into the small city, and as we passed the first building. I brought my vision to the window, watching my people as they passed by. Smiles and laughs where abundant as the festival was coming to an end, and people wanted to savor every last moment. The truck then pulled up to the sidewalk near a park, a place where I usually walked about, and as I stepped out the city manager greeted me. “I see, the Queen has left you in charge.” He said, I nodded with a gentle smile. “So what brings you to this humble city of mine.” I looked out towards the festival, watching my people celebrate.
“Just a little walk like usual.” I said, and he smiled. “Good, I thought I was going to be forced to appease you.” I teasingly scoffed. “I would not dare treat my people like surfs.” I said, he nodded, and I went on my way, wandering throughout the city. The people hardly recognizing me, some do of course, but many don’t, and I like it that way, it gives me a chance to see how everything is. How my people thrive, and not only that there personal troubles. I probably have a better understanding of our people then my sister does but it's not like it's a requirement for her position she rules good and that is what matters.
I then made it to the port, a place of major trade, watching as many peoples come to exchange wares. Ugh foreigners, there ideas infesting our culture and identity, no matter where fairly immune to it, at least I hope so. I watched as someone exchanged a book with a species from one of the lower regions, a sense of disgust coming over me. I don't know how Ardosus tolerates it, you'd think she'd show concerned about such things how it impacts us, but she continues on not caring, she needs to put her foot down at some point. I continued on doing my best to ignore the sight. Best not let it ruin my walk.
UNGA
I slowly arose, and saw Ardosus clenching her teeth, as she restlessly slashed about, her painful grunts causing my muscles to seize up in discomfort. Seems the adrenaline finally wore off. I wondered when that would happen. I got up and prepared for a little venture into the woods. “I’ll be right back.” I said, she nodded clenching down harder onto her teeth, as I ran out to find the herbs that would relieve some of her pain, and with what seemed like a stroke of luck, I found a decent patch and began gathering all that was needed. After a few minutes of rushed gathering, I made my way back to the camp grinding the certain parts of the herbs I needed into a fine powder. She can eat it like this, but it’s easier to mix it with water, I then started a tiny fire, and waited for the water to boil.
Yesterday was certainly eventful, it seems Ardosus was not who I thought she is, she could be lying though I’ll save my judgment on that possibility for later, for now I need to get this to her, I picked up the metal container, placing the powder inside it, and brought it into the tent, giving Ardosus the concoction, and a few minutes later she was back to herself, allowing me to work on her bandages and replace them with new ones.
“You seem to know everything.” She said. “It’s mandatory out here, you die if you don’t know what you're doing.” I asserted, she nodded. “You're still more of a leader than you think.” I scowled, as a bad taste filled my mouth. “And, I still want nothing to do with that role.” Ardosus eyes squinted, as I remained in the smoldering frustration of my silence, this is probably the fourth maybe fifth time she’s said this, and although she doesn't sound all that bad from her accounts, I still want nothing to do with it. I then remembered the deal, it would be wise to have her explain it, she still could be slimy you never know with these people. “So about this deal, how is everything going to play out.” I stated, sounding more serious than I wanted to. “You’ll be provided residence in the castle, while I teach you the ropes, not that I believe that those teachings will be too hard for you.” I nodded disagreeably, she took notice. “I know you won’t like it, but you have plenty of potential.” I exhaled, my eyebrow twitching. “Listen I know what you're trying to do here, but it isn’t working so can we please stop talking about it.” I said, my hair spiking up a little. “Then there is nothing else to talk about.” She said, as she positioned her body so that she stood higher over me, her chest broadening more, I didn’t know what she was doing, but I remained unwavering, she then got out of my crappy tent, and stretched while ensuring she didn’t put to much strain on the stitches, my spikes relaxed and my emotions subsided. I sighed and followed her out, I should apologize shouldn’t I.
“I’m sorry, that was unbecoming of me.” I said, she turned around. “It’s alright, I’ve been kinda pushy, it was only an amount of time until you pushed back.”, “still I should be more tactful.” She sat by the smoldering fire, letting her arm relax on the ground. “Tactfulness, and showing someone your boundaries go hand and hand.” She said, and I sat down across from her, she isn’t like the rest, no, not at all.
“I miss judged you.” I said, playing with the embers in the pit. “In what way.” She asked, laying down onto her side keeping her eyes locked on me. “In the way, I judge every leader.” She nodded in an understanding way. “ Not all of us are bad, it’s just hard to make the light shine through the cracks.” Yeah, I guess so especially when the suns blacked out, a branch snapped, along with the audible sounds of footsteps. “There it is, again.” I said, Ardosus clenched her sword. “I swear upon Glenchin if it is the fucking Empire.” She said, raising her sword into a guard. “I don’t believe now is the time to fight.” I said, staring into the woods, and she nodded her head.
I quickly knocked the tent down, and did my best to remove any evidence of our presence. We then disappeared into the woods. “This is worrying.” I said, my heart beating quicker and quicker. “Don’t worry, as long as they don’t catch up we’ll be alright.” I then heard the crack of a bullet, Ardosus quickly moving her sword, blocking the shot, a familiar panic flowing through me. Why would someone want to seek our heads… Ah what does it matter? It could have just as much purpose as the burnings. A bullet whizzed past my head, Ardosus, then picking me up off my feet breaking off into a full sprint. A great shiver running down my spine, hopefully this is just a bunch of ragtags. I then heard the firing of a rocket, and she sidestepped the warm blast of the explosion grazing me, as she quickly set me on the ground, I covered my head, and a breeze come from her as she took off, I looked up a little, watching her cut into a group of soldiers whom emerged from the foliage, there body parts flying through the air, as she hacked and slashed, bullets bouncing off her armor and sword as she did, sparks flying everywhere.
I then saw a small tank appear over the crest of a nearby miniature hill, Ardosus preparing for it to fire as she grasped the handle of her sword with both hands. The tank fired, Ardosus positioning the flat side of the blade at an angle deflecting the round, sending it flying off somewhere deep into the jungle; She then twisted the handle, two plasma rods emerging from the flat sides of the blade, as she used the force of the impact to twirl around, she then twisted the handle back into its original position, the unstable plasma then flying towards the tank, the metal immediately combusting spewing chunks of melted alloy in all directions, thankfully Ardosus was out of range from the debris, although the same could not be said for some of the soldiers, there agonizing screams filling the jungle.
Ardosus stood still for a second switching the sword to her other hand, letting her injured arm lie limp, she charged up the blade again, casting it into the jungle, the explosion of fire and flame engulfing the jungle's foliage, and anyone unlucky enough to be in its vicinity. She then began panting heavily from exhaustion, as the flames flew up around her. A lone soldier either brave or stupid charged her, with guns ablazing. She blocked all his shots, and swiftly lifted up her sword bringing it down upon the poor man. I then noticed two more soldiers about to open up on her, as she was exposing her side.
I hastily looked around for anything that could help her, and saw an assault rifle lying on the ground a fair distance from me. I quickly picked it up, putting the two in my crosshairs. A moment of hesitation as a quick flash of a memory appeared, a spear in my hand, and a corpse held within a dead soldier's grasp. I squeezed the trigger, and the two soldiers fell. My eyes picking up the warm blood flying out of them as I riddled them with holes. I fell to the ground feeling the same deathly Ill that I had felt long before, and Ardosus calmly walked over and stood in front of me, an emotionless expression of stone etched across her face, so uncaring, how cruel.
“It doesn't feel good doesn't it.” She said, I slowly lowered my head as my body felt colder, she bent down to meet my eyes, her hand gently touching my shoulder a little warmth returning. “It’s the most unsettling feeling you’ll ever come across.” She softly whispered, I nodded slowly trying my best to recover. “yeah I’m somewhat familiar with it.” I said, she rose, taking her hand off my shoulder, and I looked up seeing that she still had her arm extended towards me, blood dripping off of her finger tips whom it delonged to I did not know.
I took it and she helped me up onto my feet. This is one of the many reasons I never wanted to be a leader, I guess that never really mattered, didn't it. Where always at the mercy of those above they'll always dictate what you’ll be and I’m a killer, I can’t wait to separate myself from all this. Ardosus than lowered her head and breathed in calmly, steadily. “They chose their fate Unga, do not feel ashamed by that.”
She then fell like a brick. I tried to dampen her collapse, but I didn’t even make a difference, as I was knocked to my knees in an instant. I then heard soldiers running towards us there, boots thumping on the soft jungle floor, I readied my gun, and as they came through the foliage I noticed they where ares, I quickly lowered my weapon, as they quickly fanned out, securing the area and getting us out of the jungle, before anyone else that sought our heads had the chance to begin another assault.
We soon arrived back in the coastal capital, my father waiting by the hospital. I jumped out of the truck and he rushed over to make sure I was alright, but I paid no mind, bigger issues required my attention. I and Ardosus’s soldiers help her off the back of the truck in a stretcher. My father finally gaining the ability to read the room, understood the gravitas of the situation and remained far back from it all.
I watched the surgery from the window of the operation theater, since I protested to stay and observe. It was a nail biter every second of it, and as minutes turned to hours, I finally sat down, my legs beginning to hurt due to all the stress pacing. I hope she's alright, I giggled a little realizing the irony here, that I was hoping that a ruler was all right, but to be honest she's alright.
A few more hours passed, and the surgeon walked out his gloves bloody, as he began to take them off, my foot began tapping rapidly preparing for the worst. “She’ll make a full recovery soon enough, but do tell her to go easy.” I exhaled probably the greatest exhale of relief I’ll have for my whole life, and just like clockwork the nurses brought her out.
I followed them down the hall the sound of wheels scurrying across the tiled floor, forever burning into my mind the nurses then turned into a room, exiting soon after I walked in. I stared at Ardosus as she laid in bed, bandages covering her body from the fragmentation finding its way through the cracks of her armor, with her entire right arm hung in a cast. It was easy for one to tell that I would be forced to wait for a while.
Her guards then came in, immediately locking their eyes onto me. “Why are you here?” One said. “To make sure she’s alright of course.” I responded, they all looked at each other. “I think one guard in her room should do.” Another stated, they all nodded, one taking position by the door, while the other two stood outside in the hallway, all while I sat in a chair reading and going over my notes. The stress, still there. I just wasn’t paying any mind to it and after many hours of writing, I noticed her eyes slowly open as she let out a grown, the first audible emotion I’ve heard from her I got up, quickly making my way over.
“How are you feeling?” I said. “Sore and everything burns.” The guard then approached me. “It’s alright, he’s good,” she muttered. “You sure my Queen.” She nodded slowly, as I quickly put an assortment of medication into a little cup, making sure to have a glass of water ready, and gave it to her. She seemed more exhausted than in pain, probably because she's too tired for her body to even register how injured she is. “How long did they give me?” She asked.
“They haven't told me yet, I’m pretty sure the surgeon will come in soon though now that you're awake.” I said, it was obvious she was fighting sleep, so I placed my hand on her shoulder. “Hey it’s alright you don’t have to prove anything, rest.” She nodded, closing her eyes once again. She fights so hard to maintain her stature even when it hurts her, hopefully she recognizes this.
I went back to what I was doing before, doing so for some time until my father decided to show face. “Well you two seemed to have formed a great bond, maybe this allegiance will prove very fruitful for both our kingdoms.” I sighed in disgust as I got up, continuing towards the window, and opening it. “What?” He questioned. “I wish not to see the world through politics.” I affirmed, he nodded and joined me by the window. “I know. Your mother and I once we finally gained power we thought we could change the world, in the end we just ended up fighting to not get trampled.” I looked at him. “Yes I’m aware, just because I was a young teenager doesn't mean I’ve forgotten.” I said, he giggled. “Just because you're young doesn't mean your memory won't fail you.” We both chuckled a little. “Still won't let go of how I forgot those documents huh.” He nodded. “At least I can laugh at it now, it almost gave me a heart attack at that moment." We both chuckled, and then silence befell us.
"Right now though, I plan to keep us untrampled no matter what, because I, like many good kings, don't want to see our people suffer.” He has the same worries as me, the same worries as Ardosus, where all trying to ensure our people don’t suffer. “How about this.” I said he looked at me, as if expecting me to shrug him off. “I go with Ardosus on a diplomatic mission, while also taking lessons from her in leadership.” he seemed skeptical, his eyebrow rose. “tell me, why?” There was no point in trying to hide it. “I am interested in the region.” I heard him groan. “Come on Unga you have to accept that there are more pressing matters than this hobby.” I reached into my satchel, pulling out the map, I didn’t like drawing it a single bit because I know resources will go back into the machine, but I also don’t want my people to suffer an economic down turn least be it I want them fighting in the streets like the animals I study, he took it, scanning the entire map.
“What the hell, have you been doing this while conducting your adventures.” He looked up at me in shock. “S-Sorry, I didn’t know.” I nodded, as he carefully closed the map. “So how long do you think this trip will be?” I looked away trying to capture a time frame in my mind, but couldn’t. “I do not know.” I said, he chuckled. “Have as much time as you need, just be sure to come back.” I nodded happily, and he walked to the door stopping as he placed his hand on the knob. “Thank you Unga, for thinking about our people.” He then continued out and I felt a sense of relief sweep over me.
Finally some new terrain and animals, I just wonder what I’ll come across, a mammoth sized creature. No, no, it’s not flat, maybe some interesting small rodents, and medium sized animals, calm down Unga, and as I pondered on the possible landscape and animals, a few hours then passed, and the then surgeon then came in.
“She'll be able to leave once her energy comes back, but make sure to tell her men that their Queen mustn't do anything too strenuous for a while rupturing another muscle could result in more major internal bleeding.” Another grace of good fortune, all I just need to do is wait now. Hopefully, one long rest will take care of most of her problems. I looked at her as she rested her chest slowly rising up and down. the monitors reading that everything's nominal, she seems fine for now.
I'll remain and watch over her still, It couldn't do any harm. I sat down in a chair, continuing where I left off with my notes, waiting for her to suddenly wake, but that's wishful thinking, I do a lot of that don’t I, I wish I didn’t kill anyone, I wish I could be left alone, then there are some things you never wished for, like Ardosus. Who might have actually given me some hope in terms of our current leadership class, but when she passes who will take her place, no one of her stature that's who. then it’s back to business as usual.
I slowly began slumping in my chair, my eyelids beginning to cover a good portion of my eyes. That almost happened today, an Ardosus less world, I think a part of me wants to stop that, knowing her people would suffer a great deal... I can rationalize it all I want, but I only know one thing for sure, I want to go to Glenchin and I want to make sure she's alright because I don't want the beast of ivory to have free game.
My eyelids closed and I drifted away, feeling everything from today pass by me, I then suddenly awoke from my nap. My eyes fluttering open, my attention immediately grabbed by Ardosus’s tail flailing back and forth as she tried to grab it, such an odd and cute scene to witness. I secretly looked about the room the guard no longer present. She must have ordered him out. I’ll pretend that I’m still asleep to get a little more out of this. Her tail flung side to side until she finally grabbed a hold of it, ripping a large section of hair off.
I saw her eyes widen, as she slowly brought her hand towards her, the hair still clenched tightly in her palm, then quickly hiding her error under the blanket. I gasped a little, lifting up my head and walking over, concern traced across my face. “How long has that been going on?” I asked, she sorta hid under the blankets, which I found a little humorous. “I know, but this is something that comes with the job.” she replied, I pinched the bridge of my nose, exhaling. “True, but if that kind of symptom is there then you're overdoing it.” She shrugged, not taking in anything I was saying. ”Just recognize when you need to take a break, okay.” I said, she nodded from under the blankets, along with what I thought was a pout. I prepared the medicine again, downing it with no hesitation once again.
She seemed a little more awake and stronger than when she first woke, good we may get out of here more quickly than I originally thought. “Do you want to get up?” I asked, she extended her hand carefully towards me, and I grabbed hold of it slowly helping her up. Her torso towering over me. I forgot how tall she was. It seems like a feat to bring a person like her down.
“I already talked to my father about the trip. I will leave when you are ready.” she looked out of the window "good… How long have you been here." I shrugged. "Don't know." I responded, she remained emotionless, probably trying to look tough, after I witnessed her little attempt at fun. "You didn't have to." She said, "But I did anyway." I asserted helping her over to the window allowing her to get a better look.
"Hope you don't mind the cold weather in my land.” She said, “Hey I may be cold blooded, but that doesn't mean I’ll just drop dead of hypothermia.” I responded, she softly chuckled, which was hard to notice. “We’ll see.” She muttered, my eyebrow slanting up. “Yes, I guess we will,” I added with a hint of confidence. She looked down, her presence as imposing as ever. “Let's see who comes out on top then.” She stated with very sure of herself, I couldn’t help but smile.
