SOME TIME LATER
I began taking off the bandages that were applied a few days ago, biting my lip from the pain as my burnt hand was slowly revealed, and once I made the last rotation, I let the bandage fall to the floor, staring at the hand for a few seconds. Seems my moist skin saved me for a few seconds, but after that it burned through, I'm lucky that move didn't do anything more.
I heard my door open and I turned to see who it was, my eyes meeting Ardosus's as she peered in through the crack. “Is this a bad time,” she said. I shook my head and she continued in. “Have the painkillers been working,” she said. “No not entirely,” I respond. She nodded seeming a little distressed. “I’ll tell them to get you something stronger.” I shook my head. “I don’t wanna be on that stuff, it'll screw you up if you take it for too long and it seems I’m in for the long haul.” Ardosus walked closer. “Do you want me to help you then?” I raised my hand, and she sat down, gently placing my hand onto her lap, carefully beginning to rewrap it with a fresh bandage.
“You gave my generals quite the talking,” she said smiling while looking at me. “Yeah that situation didn’t leave me in a good mood.” She nodded. “I understand… I apologize for that I should’ve.” “No one can see into the future Ardosus, I’m just happy that I’m sitting here with you.” She blushed a little. “But there is one question I have.” I nodded, already knowing what it was going to be. “Why did you do that?” I exhaled as she finished bandaging me up. “It was a lot of things, one I was angry, two I really wanted to kill him, and three… hearing you were in danger… love makes you do a lot of stupid things.” She sorta launched back into her seat a little bit with the most excited expression, as she then placed her hand on her chest exhaling. It was pretty cute to be honest, watching her fumble around after such a sudden and unexpected statement. “Y-yes it does.” Her eyes darted around the room for a bit, and then she recomposed. “Do you wanna go to the peace talks with me.” A bit of softness in her voice, I smiled. “Something tells me I'm in for a surprise.” She smiled that same seductive glare slipping from her again. “Oh and Unga one last thing,” she said as she stood up. I stared at her waiting for her to say something, but she bent down, and hugged me. “I know he’s not a good person Unga, but don’t let your anger get to you, sometimes you have to be more tactful.” She then backed away. “And if you can’t do it for yourself then do it for me, please Unga.” I nodded. “I’ll ensure it,” I said. She smiled again, and walked out, letting out another glare as she exited through the door.
I wonder if that's why she’s been so shy, besides the fact that she'd be afraid I’d say no… Again. I took the glass of water I had lying on the table, taking a sip as I got up and as I did, an intense and immediate energy drain following. I stumbled around for a bit, until I found my balance using a desk as support, feeling as if everything was lacking everything, oxygen, blood pressure, water, it's like the entire dash went up with warnings and as I stared at the floor, I looked up seeing Ardosus sister walk in, a smile stretched across her face.
“Wrong choice of words Unga, wrong choice of words.” I backed away slightly. So this was her doing. “Your such a persistent annoyance,” I said with strained breath. She giggled as she walked up to me. “Annoyance, no I’m a threat.” She gently pressed her hand onto my chest, the force strong enough to make me fall backwards, my head banging against the floor, she then brought her waist down to my crotch, an aroma entering my nose. Wait, I remember that I’ve used that substance before. I looked at her leg seeing a thigh strap with many little needles attached to it. It’s coming from there. “I wonder what would happen if I stole Ardosus’s prince charming, what would you think of yourself.” She placed her hand on my chest, a psychotic gaze forming on her face. A burst of adrenaline went through me, as I found the energy to move my arm, quickly grabbing a needle that smelt the strongest, shoving it into the side of my neck, my strength immediately returning to me. She tried pinning me down with her weight, and in response I clocked her with my good arm, sliding out from underneath her, grabbing a letter opener from my desk. She immediately jumped back towards the door, throwing some of her needles at me. I twirled to my left the knives flying past me. I then used my remaining velocity to throw the letter opener the door closing just as it left my hand. I got lucky, I should keep my guard up. I picked up the glass of water and sent it down the drain. Maybe carry a knife of some sorts, at least until we get to those peace talks.
ARDOSUS
I stood over my old crib, staring into it, smiling as Unga words swirled inside my head, causing a wave of relief every time I uttered them. If things go well this crib will have a child in the coming months, it would certainly be dreamlike for me especially with the way I lived before, I’ve denied myself so much, but now I can refuse that denial and say that I at least I was a mother, and I plan to be a good one. I held onto my stomach my eyes glowing a yellowish orange, my heart beginning to race as I began to pant. No, it can’t happen now, not yet. I grabbed a vial of elixir that I had tucked away in my armor just for these occasions and drank it, waiting a couple of seconds feeling my body return to normal.
I expected it to be soon, but not this soon, whatever, this should buy me the time I need. I walked out of the room, into my bedroom where my sister was standing with a bruised cheek, looking pissed as ever, casting a burning gaze in my direction. Shes up to something. “Is this about Unga,” I asked. She smiled, stepping forward. “Listen Ardosus, I want you to put this romance aside.” I scuffed. “No.” Her smile disappeared. “We serve Glenchin, we serve Glenchin’s interests, not some fuck all nation turned kingdom, that has a bunch of people, that can’t handle a cool fucking breeze.” I walked towards her. “This isn’t about those people, this is about Unga,” I said as she backed away a little. “Like hell it is.” I then caught a whiff of Ungas scent on her, my eyes glowing yellowish orange, as I felt all control wash away. I stepped forward grabbing my sister's throat, lifting her up, pinning her against the door. “What, no, you’ve haven't even mated with him yet, how can you see him as already yours,” she said through strained breaths. I sighed, loosening my grip, and she dropped to the floor, standing up soon after, clenching her throat. “I’m only doing this because I care about you, and this nation.” I opened the door for her. “I don’t care and if you touch him again, well you already know what will happen.” I then kicked her in the stomach and she went flying out, skidding across the hallway floor, the guards watching, they then looked at me. “Tell the other guards to keep an eye on her, and if she gets close to Unga, don’t hesitate.” I should probably get Unga, peace talks should be starting soon.
A FEW HOURS LATER
UNGA
The Glenchinite dropship came down, and we exited it, bringing my sight onto the palace, which was right in front of us. Even though I couldn’t see the color, one could easily tell it was a spectacle. We walked, forward from the garden to the massive entrance where a man walked up to us, vehicles then pulling in from all sides. “Ardosus, it’s so nice to see you again, of course, I wish it was under better circumstances, but still it’s nice.” Ardosus smiled. “I understand Pureno, but nonetheless it is good to see you too.” He then looked at me. “ah, is this the man you were talking about when I was preparing invitations.” Ardosus nodded her head, Pureno bowing a little. “I welcome you to my palace, a home to anyone looking to do diplomacy.” I smiled. “Well then, I will ensure that I do much of it here.” The man smiled. “Then I will look forward to your many visits.” He then looked behind us, and I did the same, seeing the line of people forming behind us.
“I apologize, I have kept you two in such a long conversation, please come inside,” he said moving aside. We nodded, continuing in, and as we walked in the inside opened up, the ceiling decorated with beautiful chiseled artwork, and finely detailed archways, I stared at it all. If this is just one of there palaces I can only wonder what there capital looks like. We then made it into the ballroom, the attention to detail the same as the last room.
People wandered about gathering refreshments, and food talking, laughing, and arguing with each other, as the slight and subtle sound of music played in the background from an orchestra. “Unga, make yourself comfortable here, I will join you shortly after the meeting is done, then I’ll show you a surprise.” I nodded, smiling. “I’ll be waiting,” I said, and she shot that same smile back at me, and she then continued into a separate hall. It shouldn't take too long, especially when that ceasefire was called right after that battle, but historically Glenchin has never asked for much, just payment of damages, resources, and a guarantee they won't start another war anytime soon.
I walked over to a table that had many assortment of meats, cheeses, breads, pretty much a you name we got it situation. I began making my selection, and a man with a bandaged burn mark across his cheek walked up beside me doing the same. “Interesting burns Unga,” he said. I looked up at him with a fake smile. “Same could be said for you,” I said, as I stared at the Emperor. Two palace guards stepped near us. “Either way, why are you here, shouldn’t you be handling the talks.” He giggled. “My diplomats handle that, that's what they're there for after all, but Ardosus never understood that from the looks of things.” I chuckled. “you should give her more credit, at least she actually aids her people and doesn't just give them false promises, besides you should be for thankful for her, because she told me not to rip for throat out.” The guards moved a little closer. “Bold words for such a small man, cause I will assure you that they will be back and crush that tiny spec off the map.” I exhaled. “You just look foolish the more you try, how many times have you tried to invade Glenchin, how many of them ended in failure, I mean your spec ops squad lost to a bunch of hunters.” He bit his lip. “You don’t understand why we lost.” I scoffed. “Really is this what the great Empire has to offer petty excuses.” He lunged at me, but the guard behind him grabbed his waist, and the other held onto his arm. “See patience is key in conflict.” Biting into a piece of glazed ham, walking off, the cries and yells heard throughout the ballroom.
I soon found myself sitting against the wall, surrounded by crowds of people. A man then approached me from out of the blue in a general's uniform belonging to the Empire. “Unga, is that your name?” I nodded, he bowed. “Thank you for what you did for my brother, I got to see him one last time.” I nodded. “How is he anyways.” He looked at the Emperor, who was still fuming from across the ballroom, clenching his fist as he did. “Executed as a consequence for his failure.” I looked down, sighing. “You have my regards,” I said with sorrow. He nodded. “Unga, when the Empire collapses my allegiance is guaranteed.” I nodded. “Then I must ensure your trust is not misplaced.” He nodded, disappearing into the crowd once again. Seemed he was doomed either way. What a nightmare this conflict has bred, but it seems that change is on the horizon, and hopefully I can shape that change for the better.
I waited for what felt like a few minutes when Ardosus approached, all giddy and happy. “I assume it went well,” I asked. She giggled. “No, it’s not that,” she said taking my hand. “Come on, let's get to the roof.” Her normally calm and docile tail, wagging about intensively. We continued up stairs, until we reached the roof. The orchestra still able to be heard from an open window, she released my hand walking up to the window, dropping a white cloth down into the ballroom below.
The music stopped, and she walked a little bit aways from the window, as the music then changed to a more smoother, seductive tone. She began unlatching her armor, and as each piece fell, a more and more revealing dress was exposed. Her heat pouring out of the dress. She could probably seduce my entire kingdom. “D-do you like it,” she said. I stepped forward. “It’s um, stimulating for sure,” I said extending my hand, my heart beating as hard as it could, and She extended hers to met mine, the minute our hands touched a sensation of bliss jolted up to my head. We then pulled each other closer, beginning to gently twirl around. “I can already tell you like my little surprise,” she said giggling a little. “To be honest I don’t know what to say.” She smiled. “Then don’t say anything, just enjoy what where doing for each other,” I smiled. letting my head rest against her stomach, taking in all that she had to offer, letting my hands feel her back and every other warm spot on her, she did the same to me every touch and poke making me jump and flinch. I can’t believe I would have denied myself this, myself her, I can’t believe I looked at her with such criticisms when we first met, but I guess those don’t matter anymore, it’s only what I do now. And as we went on and on, time began nothing more then a distant after thought until the music stopped.
“I think that's our queue,” she said. Looking up, I nodded. “Sadly.” She smiled. “Careful what you wish for.” She said. I cocked my head sideways, confused a little and she giggled. I began picking up a faint smell one that's sweet, pleasing I wanted to be close to it. I took a big whiff of it and stared up at Ardosus. “You smell really good.” I spoke as if I was on a drug, my mind and movement a little hazy, her eyes widened. “Dammit, why now.” She reached into her armor that was lying on the ground, pulling out a perfume bottle in which she sprayed frantically over herself, and as I watched her that feeling of attraction grew stronger. I drew deep breaths, as I stared at her body, her breasts, and her waist. “Sorry Unga, I didn’t know that it was going to break the elixir that easily.” She then sprayed the perfume into my face, the foul smelling odor making my entire body recoil in disgust, snapping me out of the trance. “What, what was that,” I said. “Pharmons my body produces, it helps attract mates,” she said as she put on her armor. “We must hurry, there's no telling when the elixir might fully wear off.” And she placed the last armor piece on her. She then took off, grabbing my hand as she rushed by, making our way down to the entrance. “It’s been a pleasure hosting you Ardosus.” Pureno said with a smile. “Sorry Pureno, can’t talk it’s that time.” He jolted up. “Oh my, thats early, well I’m rooting for you two.” We boarded the dropship, Ardosus and I sitting next to each other. “So it’s early.” She nodded. “earlier than the earilst ever recorded.” I looked up at her nervousness dressed across her face. “I’ll freshen up a bit when we get back, have to look my best before you go haywire.” She giggled. “Yes, that would be good.” There was a stretch of silence, and she pulled me to her side, her body getting warmer. “Thank you Unga, for being here.” She stroked my head, and I smiled as I brushed my head up against her.
ARDOSUS
I told the guards what was to come. “Ardosus, are you sure it’s fine that your mating season has come so early.” I sighed. “Unga stimulated it, I’m sure of it.” They both looked at each other. “I’ll lock the door, and slide the key under. Unga already has one so when he comes down, let him through.” The guards paused. “We understand Ardosus.” They said. I walked in, locking the door, sliding the key under the crack, letting out a held breath, as I took off my armor. My body feels like it’s on fire. I began to pant harder and harder, my heart racing faster and faster until it felt like it was at its limit. I grabbed a thin nightgown as I took off my undergarments, the heat still festering. I laid down on the cold floor until something clicked, and an animalistic urge fell upon me to rip the damn clothes off of the one I was seeking. I scurried to the light switch turning it off, the orange crimson tint of my eyes lighting up the room. I hovered close to the ground staring at the door, knowing I could not breach through them, so I went to a corner near the door, servicing my arms as another pair of legs, and like a predator I lied in wait, hoping he does not take long, my voice letting out slight whimpers with each passing second, wanting, needing him. Don’t take long Unga.
UNGA
I washed my face and looked down at my books. I haven't gone through these in a while. Gently opening one up. Good times, I wonder after all of this if I can get back to them. I chuckled. I shouldn’t worry we’ll help each other.
I checked the back of my room, looking at the spear my father had delivered just now, the note that came with it lying on the bed, congratulating me on my military success. He knows me, he should be more tactful, I’m not like others seeing the other side as less than what they are, I do not see them as obstacles. I took off my dress clothes, picking up my custom tailored ceremony outfit. It had long stretches of cloth going down the arms, with the stomach area having a thin see through layer of cloth over it. It was made to be baggy while expressing as much heat as possible without being naked. This seemed stupid at first, when I came of age but now I can’t wait. I put it on feeling slightly embarrassed. It's really the first time I’ve worn anything so revealing.
I walked over to my door gently opening it and there she stood, Ardosus’s sister. Murderous intent behind her eyes I bent my body backwards as needles flew past my face, and just as they passed I launched myself to the back of my room, picking up the spear. I pulled at the sides a fan like shield coming to my defense as the next volley came, this time more in quantity. The sound of the knives hitting the thin, but durable plating, the sound audible throughout the room audible throughout the entire room. I then heard quick paced footsteps so I charged forward and ducked pulling the shield up, feeling her foot hit the shield as she went over. I quickly brought it to defend my back as more needles began bouncing against it, and I quickly dashed out of the room slamming the door shut in my wake. Knowing that the lock was not on my side, I made a run for it, darting through the other door and half-way down the hallway before hearing the whistling death of another pair of needles. I immediately took the corner hearing the needles pepper into the wood, as I barely dodged them, I continued running down the hallway, crashing through the door at the end of it, slamming the door shut, dead bolting it.
I gave myself a minute to calm down. “Freshening up doesn't seem like a very wise choice now.” I then heard a key get inserted into a hole. “Oh come on.” I yelled as I jumped back and rammed my body through an opened window, jumping from one side of the castle to the other, landing on a balcony. I shot a quick glance behind me, seeing her staring at me from the door. I ran through the balcony door. An official jumped up at my sudden entrance. “Unga, what the fuck.” I darted out of the room. “Where am I, where am I,” I whispered. I then saw the stairwell. “Right under Ardosus’s room,” I added. Running up it, and as I was going up I heard the clattering of heels that were growing closer and closer. I focused and as I jettisoned my way out of the stairwell. I tripped on the final step, falling into the hallway gaining quite some distance from the stairs. I quickly looked up to see her throw a pair of needles. I quickly brought up the spear extending its shield, the first pair bouncing off the shield, but the second bounced off the marble ceiling. I moved to the side and saw another pair being ready to fire just before I could bring up the shield, her smile widening. A royal guardsmen then came rushing in, bashing her to the side with a shield. My freight train in shining armor. I quickly got up, running up to his back, jumping off his shoulders, and bringing the back end of my spear down on her head, her body lying knocked out cold on the floor. “I’ll take care of this Unga, you go see the Queen.” I nodded, breathing heavily as I slowly got up.
I then looked down the hallway, seeing the other guard standing totally still. I slowly trekked over. “How was the run.” The guard said. “Exhausting, frightening, yeah, I think I’m good for cardio now.” I placed the spear by the door and pulled out the key, exhaling. “I have a feeling that I’m gonna die happy,” I whispered. The guard laughed, as I opened the door the room cool and quieter than I’d like it to be. I walked in an ominous feeling beginning to take hold of my body, but that smell, that smell from the rooftop, it’s here and more potent, I already feel way too aroused from it, and when I took a few steps in the door behind me slammed shut, the lock on the door making it’s distinct click. I turned around to see Ardosus’s entire body heated like a forge. She rushed forward tackling me onto her bed, which was quite a ways away from the door. She pressed her hand down near my head as she looked over me, panting, growling, as I felt the sheet she had placed her hand onto begin to crumple as she squeezed. “Ardosus, wait,” I said, and watched her desperately fight off her instincts. I grabbed both her arms, reversing our positions and then leaned in kissing her. Her muscles relaxed and after a few minutes passed I lifted my head up her breathing deep and intense. She gently opened her eyes and that breathing reverted back to panting again, but more aggressive. She grabbed my shoulders, wrapping her tail around one of my legs and pushed me onto my back. The only thing audible being the tearing of clothes and the sound of a tail tightening its grasp.
MANY LOUD HOURS LATER
ARDOSUS
I woke up and embraced Unga again, his breathing heavy from last night. I listened to his heartbeat, replaying every memory that I had perfectly captured from midnight to dusk. I breathed in deeply, our scents mixing together. He’s mine for sure. I then heard a grown and I turned my head upwards facing Unga, as I was still laying on his stomach. My tail wagging more intensively. “You okay,” he asked. I nodded, and stared at the bite marks on the side of his shoulder. “Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself,” I said shyly. He grinned. “It’s alright, I could tell you weren't exactly at the helm.” I giggled. “Yeah, mating season does that to us.” Unga seemed concerned. “Does that mean I’m gonna have to fear for my life everytime it comes round for the Glenchinte people?” I shook my head. “They smell me on you, and I’d kill them if they dared to lay their hands on you.” My hands tearing the sheets a tad as my grip tightened. “Oh, I see,” he said, reaching his hand out, cupping my cheek, relaxing me. “Sorry, it makes those feelings more intense.” He began stroking and I rubbed my head up against his hand as he did. After a few seonds I curled up against him. “But the smell is still on you.” I smiled. “I may have more control, Unga, but it doesn't mean it’s ended.” He shivered. “Don’t worry it won't be like last night.” He let out a small exhale. “I can’t lie though, it was great,” he said, bringing his forward head against mine as we held each other.
“I still can’t believe you pushed me down like that.” He looked away shyly. “Heat of the moment, I guess,” he said as I gently pressed my lips against his cheek. We both giggled, as I felt the heat of the sun hit my back. “I guess it’s that time,” I said as a piece of hair fell in front of my vision, Unga, brushing it away. “Yeah, I guess so.” I sighed and lazily started taking off the blankets. “Start with a bath,” I said. “Probably for the best,” Unga said, beginning to follow. I saw him shiver a bit from the morning cold, but nothing a little skin to skin doesn't fix, and that skin contact extended right into the bath. “I fear we may overindulge in ourselves,” Unga said as I rubbed my hand across his back, feeling every little scale. “This only happens every year so I think we can enjoy ourselves a little excessively.” He nodded. “Fair.” We cleaned each other from the lasting aromas that stained us, of course the only scent not even coming close to being removed was mine, and mine alone.
It felt odd finally achieving this with Unga, probably because subconsciously I thought I’d never reach this point, but it’s still a welcomed feeling, I mean we just happened to meet and if it wasn’t for his actions, and my intrigue we probably wouldn’t be here. A splash of water then hit my face, I looked at Unga who had a sly smile. I smiled, grabbing his shoulders and forcing him under for a second. “Think you're funny huh,” I said jokingly. We both laughed. I can’t believe my old self would deny these emotions, these urges, and sacrifice so much for so little.
Once we were done washing, we dressed ourselves. “Wanna walk around the castle,” I asked. “Shouldn’t we eat first,” Unga replied. “It’s only a short one.” He nodded. “Well then, lead the way.” He got close to me, and we continued out the door, the two guards bowing as we left. “My Queen, have you been made aware of what happened last night,” one of the guards said. “No, what happened.” He raised himself. “Your sister attempted to assassinate Unga, fortunately she has failed and is currently locked in what used to be Carta’s cell, do not worry we’ve already placed reservations for Carta’s release, he’s currently in the canteen.” My eyes widened and I looked at Unga. “Hey, it was already dealt with, and I didn’t want you to worry.” My hands turned into fists, the guards backing up a bit. Unga grabbed my hand, gently brushing it. “Seems like my sister likes setting me off,” I said. “Do you wish to see her,” he added, and I nodded. “Unga if I lose control do your best to stop me.” He nodded and we continued down to the dungeon, the guard immediately giving me the key to her cell. “You sure you want to do this, in this state,” Unga asked. I nodded. “I want to tell her off before I ensure her putridness never infects this castle again.” We continued up to the door, unlocking it and walking inside.
“Die in a hole you damn snake,” my sister yelled. I growled readying myself to lunge at her, but Unga gently placed his hand onto my stomach. My sister remained quiet, but still retained an angry and disappointed glare. I stepped forward. “You’ve done nothing, but hurt and use people around you, you would be the reason Glenchin falls. You’d have us become the Empire in the false belief that it would make us stable. I hope this jail cell makes you think outside the realm of what you think the people want and places you into the realm of what they actually want, so that you may realize your faults, and so I can watch you wilt as you realize what you’ve done.” As I felt my anger boil I turned around leaving with Unga, shutting and locking the door behind us. “You sure you’ll be okay,” Unga said. I exhaled. “As long as she remains down here I will be.” He gently rubbed my back. “I know, I’m being excessively brutal.” He nodded. “Shes always pushed me to be the best, always to look out for my people, still I hated her for what she was.” Unga listened intently. “And now I hate her more for what she has tried to do.” “I understand,” he said. We continued out of the dungeon. “How about we go stuff ourselves,” he asked. I nodded. “And go see Carta.” “Who is this person anyways?” I smiled. “A friend from long ago.” We continued up to the cafe and as we approached the door, we heard the racket of a party, men hooting and hollering as the clashing of drinks echoed through the door.
Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.
We stepped inside, seeing everyone jumping about viciously eating their food and chugging their drink. “Who knew my sister could cause such a party,” I said. We both giggled, continuing in, even farther, seeing Carta talking with a group of people, he looked more freshened up compared to when I last saw him in that dungeon. I smiled, feeling all that guilt and pain wash away. He then took notice of us, and waved, I waved back as we walked over. “I guess you’ve heard the news,” Carta said. Walking towards us. “Much of it, the question is have you heard of ours,” I said. He thought for a moment, slowly bringing his attention to how we were standing next to each other. “My, my, my Ardosus, I didn’t know you were such a cougar.” I pinched the bridge of my nose, as the two laughed a little. “But jokes aside Ardosus, you’ve changed a lot.” He picked up a mug that was oozing with alcohol, everyone else then paying attention. “And let's just say, we all believe you’ll be a great mother.” I smiled as everyone cheered and drank from their mugs. I then looked down at Unga who was looking up at me with a smile.
A MONTH LATER
UNGA
I sighed as I looked over the documents of another trade deal. This thing has been through fifty drafts, and it’s finally coming to a close. I enclosed it in a confidential envelope getting up, and continuing out into the hallway, Carta immediately approaching me. “Hey, can you deliver this for me, I need to meet up with Ardosus this afternoon.” Carta nodded, and his eyes widened as he began to frantically check his pockets, exhaling once he found what he was looking for. “Here, it’s tradition to give gifts to the newly mated couple around here.” I smiled. “Yeah, I’ve been getting a lot of these recently, thanks for keeping it small.” “Oh, no problem, I had a tough time finding the stones for it though.” a confident tone leaving his tongue. “Let me guess necklace.” He nodded. “And a pain in the ass one too, the twist and turns I wanted to do with the metal was infuriating. I can’t believe I put myself through that.” I laughed. “Hey, I’m happy you where willing to do this, shows true friendship you know.” “Speaking of friends, is she… alright.” I raise my eyebrow. “Yeah, except for a little nausea in the morning she’s been fine.” He grabbed my shoulder, pulling his mouth close to my ear. “She's been kinda avoidy today, and she's been walking around almost as if she's looking for something.” He then pulled away, as I scratched my chin. “Hmm, I’ll make sure to ask her about that.” He nodded.
“Anyways, how's your day been,” he said. I shook my hand back and forth. “Ah, so-so,” he added. “Yeah, that envelope you hold contains documents that have been a pain to get through, never in my life have I ever dealt with diplomats that have been complete and utter nuisances.” He chuckled. “How so.” I exhaled intensely. “Okay it started out reasonably, like. “We don’t feel comfortable spending this resource.” And stuff like that you now, and then it started boiling down to. “Why is the word the used here, where's the period, that isn’t the proper word of were.” It’s just infuriating.” “Sounds like they gave you the runaround.” I nodded with wide crazed eyes. “Well, I won't take up more of your time, oh and when are you open.” I thought for a moment. “We’ll try tomorrow, me and Ardosus get pretty busy, especially when someone does something stupid.” He nodded. “I understand, well you two enjoy your afternoon together, see ya bro.” He immediately ran off.
I then began my walk down stairs to our chambers. These past couple of days have been an absolute nightmare with the collapse of the Empire echoing throughout the national community. All these new mini nations are really gonna drive us nuts, especially with many of them already being at each other throats, but as long as I and a few other like minded people can maintain peace we might be looking at another alliance like the one Ardosus, has with the nations below her.
I stepped into our bedroom, seeing a giant bulge underneath the blankets. I walked forward seeing the searing heat underneath it, slowly lifted up the blankets as I approch the side, Ardosus curled up holding onto her stomach, and lightly panting. “You okay honey,” I said. She grabbed my hand, gently tugging on it. I granted her wish and went under the blankets with her. “I threw up,” she said softly as I moved closer to her. “Think you're sick.” She shook her head. “My breasts hurt, and it’s just exhausting to move, plus I’ve been looking for a place to be alone all day, I think this is the spot.” I felt myself get excited. “Your saying that it’s finally happening.” She nodded her head. “The signs are there aren't they.” I nodded my head as she grabbed my hand placing it on her stomach. “It’s just the beginning stages and I already can’t wait,” she said. A gentle smile stretching across her cheeks. I nodded and then paused. “Question is what life should we give our child,” I said. The smiled disappeared from her face as she stared back down at her stomach. “I don’t want our child to be birthed, and groomed into politics like I was; they should be able to be away from all this, have an actual childhood.” I leaned in. “How are we going to do that.” She stared into my eyes. “I’m going to dissolve the Glenchin monarchy, and replace it with a more flexible government.” I nodded. “That's why you’ve been reading a lot of government text books and political philosophy.” She nodded.
“I’m not needed anymore, the Empires gone and our borders are at peace, it is the natural next step.” I chuckled. “What?” She asked. “Sorry, my father has been admit about our current governmental system being crucial for keeping the people together, truth is I don’t know anymore, the Empires no more and wealth has been plentiful, but he seems adamant that this is the way forward.” “I see,” Ardosus said with a great pause. “I fear for him, I know what power does to people, and ego reaches even the most stable of us.” I sighed. “I’ve told him many times that change is needed, maybe if he’d stopped and listened.” She snuggled up against me. “Enough politics, it’s already driven me up the wall today.” I nodded and gently patted her head. “Have you told him about us?” “No,” I muttered. “Unga you should get to it, before you know it I’ll have a child and he’ll be wondering what happened in those months.” I nodded. “I’ll do my best to remember you know how I am in those meetings.” She giggled. “The tiger of the courtroom.” I giggled too. “Such a cringey name,” I whispered.
ARDOSUS’S SISTER
Finally, the word echoing through my head as the unlocking tink sound of the lock to my shackles bounced off the walls of my cell. I have been here too long already. I walked over to the door, with the thin piece of metal I had found by chance pinched in between my fingers. I expertly moved my hand through the door’s barred window and picking that lock too, and as I continued to the next door, I looked through its window also. The guard fast asleep from his hours of boredom. I then quietly went for the lock, my heart beating with excitement.
I silently made it through the castle, night serving as my aid, helping me get to the store house unnoticed, where I grabbed the thickest clothing and buried myself in rations, along with taking a rifle to supply myself with the food I need for when I banish myself into Glenchin’s lands. I left in the cloak of darkness, using an arriving supply cart as a means to get past the gate, disappearing into the snow. I looked back for a brief moment, staring up into Ardosus’s chambers, knowing that snake was up there enjoying himself. Hopefully my disappearance will plague him until the day I come back to take his life.
MANY MONTHS LATER
UNGA
I rushed to the doors of our room guards, doctors, and diplomates all standing outside, the guards seeming to be the only ones able to remain calm in the midst of all this. I placed my hand onto the door and everyone stood back, as I opened it, Ardosus lying on the bed panting as she held her bulging stomach. I closed the door as I continued in, and she turned to face me. she twitched, developing an expression of pain letting out a loud groan, her entire body seeming to be functioning on instinct. I immediately brought myself to her side. She grabbed my hand and squeezed it with the crushing force of a trash compactor as she let out another groan.
I can do this, I can do this, I’ve read a lot of books about this. But my hands still shook, I had Ardosus prop her back up against the backboard of the bed so that she was in a sitting position, I then grabbed a bowl, placing it under where the child was to come and a few minutes later I held a little screaming child in my hands. He didn’t appear as big as your average Glenchinite child, but he still retained key features like the tail and ears, of course with a few expectations like some patches of scaly skin, and one of his eyes resembling mine, with little spikes already in his hair, he did seem odd, but I guess that's what you get with half breeds. I smiled from ear to ear as I gave our child to Ardosus, who looked absolutely exhausted as her breaths were long and winded.
She immediately snatched our boy from my hands, beginning to lick the poor little bugger to death. I sat beside her watching the sight, and once she was done she brought the child to her breast. Ardosus fighting her exhaustion every step of the way, and once the child had stopped feeding, I slowly and carefully took him from Ardosus’s arms as to not startle her. I cuddled our little boy as he stared at both of us and I then looked at Ardosus, who looked like she needed rest, desperately. I extended my free arm, bringing her head down onto my shoulder in which she slowly closed her eyes, her breaths becoming soft. I looked back down at our child as he began looking around his strange new world, taking in the surroundings until he brought his eyes to me. I brought down my finger in which he smiled, and let out a funny little Ah, in which he grabbed the finger with his tiny hands and after a few minutes he fell asleep too.
The doctors then came in silently with the guard holding onto the doc’s shirt. The doctor approached us with a stethoscope in hand, placing it on our child's chest. “Sounds very healthy, congratulations,” he whispered, backing away silently and hastily. I smiled as names started flying around in my head, as well as the things I will do with him, and the things I will teach him. I can’t wait to show him the world. I then looked over at Ardosus. “And I wonder what plans you have for our little boy,” I whispered looking at her as she rested peacefully.
ARDOSUS’S SISTER
The village contractor handed me the last of my payment. “I have to say you finished that relatively easily,” he said. I counted the money. “By the way, I can get you a job around here, a lot of the people have actually taken a liking to you despite you know your very mysterious appearance.” I tucked my hood over my face more. “Sorry, but I never planned to stay here long.” He nodded. “Well at least consider it before you go.” I selected the bills I needed and pocketed them, pressing the rest against his chest. “Um, sorry I can’t take this,” he said. I shook my head. “Your family lives in a crumbling house, you need all you can get.” He looked down at the bills and took them, as I began walking away towards the gun store. “T-thank you miss,” he said. I paid him no mind and kept walking, entering the gun store, purchasing some high velocity ammunition.
“Going long hunting.” “Yeah.” He smiled. “I recommend the DeadShots, they seem to be the only ones that actually pack a punch.” I replaced the ammunition I had selected with the one he recommended and handed him the bills. “Staying around here,” he asked as he took the money. “No, there's somethings I need to finish.” He giggled. “All right, but if you change your mind you know where to go.” I walked out, heading to my snowmobile.
I haven't filled it up in a while. I looked at the local gas station, which was really just a few jerry cans on some selves. I started the engine and drove it over, the man there looking up at me from his sleepy daze. “I’ll get ya set up,” he said, getting up, grabbing a can. “But first proof of currency,” he added, as he walked over jerrycan in hand. I showed him the bills and he continued. “Staying.” I scoffed. “Everyone's been asking, ya that.” I nodded, he laughed. “Of course, well can’t blame them, you helped a lot especially with making sure our food stores are full for next winter, oh, and I don’t think I’ve complimented ya for this, but nice shooting.” He then finished topping off the gas tank. “But is the whole thing you gotta do really that important,” he said putting the gas tank cap back on for me. “It’s important to me,” I said, getting onto the snowmobile. He nodded. “Yeah, I know the feeling.” I handed him the cash. “Hey, you overpaid.” I started the snowmobile driving off towards the castle. I would stay if I could, but this is something I must do to stop this snake from consuming the people I hold dear and the nation I love.
A FEW WEEKS LATER
ARDOSUS
I stepped out to the balcony with my child in my arms, his little sounds making me smile. Unga then came out and stood next to me looking into my arms, our kid making sounds of excitement at the mere sight of his father, Unga stared at him smiling. “He’s been really active today.” Our child then falling asleep just as Unga uttered the words, we both laughed. “Yes, yes he has, I think it’s because you’ve been away in meetings all day.” Unga exhaled, politics becoming the center of his mind once again. “Yes, it’s been busy.” I placed my hand on his shoulder.
“What were they about,” I asked. He stared out at the Glenchin landscape. “My home land,” he said almost with a hint of disappointment. “Have things turned for the worst.” He shook his head. “No, not entirely,” he said, fiddling with his hand. “I mean there are riots and my father, my fathers still refusing to step down to allow a regime change.” I nodded, Unga then looked up at me. “Ardosus, I’m sorry to ask you this, but can I leave for my home land.” I nodded. “Do what you must, Unga, just don’t get yourself killed.” He exhaled. “Don’t worry, I don’t plan to.” He then looked back up at me. “But I do mean to ask will your sister be a problem.” I sighed. “If she wanted to try and kill you she'd have done it a long time ago, besides I will never let that happen.” He smiled. “Well, I think that's enough worrying, for now we should enjoy this small break from everything.”
ARDOSUS’S SISTER
I stared at the two through my scope. My calculations were already done for the plants rotation to the wind, It's all done. I closed in on the little snake's chest double checking my shot. I have this one shot, I cannot miss. I gently squeezed the trigger, and then stopped as the child began crying, the two bringing their attention to him immediately, trying to figure out what's wrong. My heart started beating, I don’t know why but it just started. I began breathing deeply to try and make it go away but it wouldn’t. Whatever. I readjusted, double checking my shot again, centering it over the snakes chest once more, but I paused watching the two laughing and spoiling the child.
My muscle in my trigger finger, failing me. I’ll wait till he's alone, so that way no one can notice my kill until I’m long gone. I placed the rifle onto a log, stoking the flames of a fire I started. They both seemed unrealistically happy, I wonder if there's some bad blood between them and there just putting on a show. No, that doesn't make sense they were alone. I turned on the radio to drown out my thoughts. “So, what do you think about that rumor.” “Rumor what rumor. “Oh you know, that rumor those nationalist started about Unga and Ardosus.” They chuckled as my ears perked up. “Oh yeah, that one where Unga was abusing Ardosus.” I knew it. I grabbed my rifle. “I mean have you looked at the size of Unga, I’m sorry but he couldn’t even hurt a damn fly much less bruise her.” They both laughed, I stopped. “On top of that there's no actual brushing, and they're doing all this weird hula hoop logic to support their claims, like with how she's actually wearing makeup to hide the bruising.” Yeah, but they could be right. “Yeah, that makes no sense because she was caught in a rain storm while in a dress not to long ago, which led to some interesting pictures. Which woulda wash that shit right off, also come on this is Ardosus everyone knows she dosnt wear make up.” “Oh oh, your mates gonna beat the crap out of you when you get home.” “Oh, yes indeed.” They both laughed. “Either way, we're avoiding the elephant in the room and that is Ardosus doesn't take anything from anyone, I mean did you hear what she did to her sister even before she tried to kill Unga.” What am I doing? I felt my brain frying as the sentances that I’ve used to justify my actions, where countered by words and what I know. Am I just like them, of course I am, I identified with them, but am I lying to myself, no, no Unga is from a foriqen country, he’s, he’s. “Ardosus literally kicked her out of her room.” “Like foot on stomach kick.” “Yes exactly.” I shut off the radio. Do I think the people want something they don't? Was Ardosus right? I think I need to sleep. I got into my tent and crawled into my sleeping bag, my eyes wide open lost in thought.
A FEW DAYS LATER
UNGA
I walked up to my father's door, pressing down on the handle hearing the clicking sound of a locked door. I sighed. “Father, open the door.” I yelled, then the door unlatched, I walked in my father immediately going back over to his desk. “How goes your studies abroad,” he said. I walked up to the desk. “You know that's not why I’m here.” He exhaled. “Tell me what changed.” “Nothing changed, the people did.” I placed the documents of removal on his desk. “The people have never changed, they always wanted something else, you knew that you’ve worked with these people.” He looked outside of the window, at the people outside as they held there signs to the sky, and sung there chants. “Tell me Unga, do you know why this province is always in turmoil?” I stared at him. “Because certain people thrive in turmoil, and I can’t just hand this to anyone.” He then looked at me. “I understand, but I trust these people, I’ve talked with them.” “You’ve always been a trusting one Unga,” he said. I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Tell me, what is it that makes you think this way,” I asked. Stepping forward. “Your friend from long ago, the village being burned, all of it, why should I trust others that have acted so foolishly when I can trust myself.” “That's no way to continue. Listen, I recognize the tragedy that happened that day, what our government did for all those years, how they maintained power for themselves, but we have a chance to change that… Look at yourslef okay, what are you doing.” my Father nodded somberly, and looked back out at the people. “Unless you want to repeat the same bloody conflict all over again.” “How much do you trust these people?” I stared at him seriously. “With my life father.” He walked over to the paper, picking up a pen. “If this goes sour, I’m never listening to you again,” he said, then reluctantly signing it. “Good then it is a fair deal.” I took the paper, and placed it back in its envelope. “But I have more request for the former king.” My father looked up at me. “Why don’t you head back up to Glenchin, with me, Ardosus and I have a surprise for you.”
A FEW DAYS LATER
ARDOSUS
I heard them through the door. “My, my Unga, how do you tolerate this cold? I'm surprised you haven't froze to death,” his father said as he grew near. I held my breath as I heard Unga press his hand on the door. “I have my ways.” His father laughed. “You're so damn secretive all of a sudden, come on what's the deal?” “You’ll find out in just a minute,” Unga said as he opened the door. I smiled as the former king stared at me. “Oh Ardosus, I didn’t know you had a child, seems to be healthy too with the color I’m seeing.” Unga then stood beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist, as our child reached out to try and grab his father with the most excited sounds. The king paused, and soon developed a blank expression on his face. “Wait, no, when, how.” He went into a long pause. “You need to give me a good run down so I can wrap my head around being an Uncle all of a sudden.” We both laughed.
ARDOSUS’S SISTER
I stared at them through the scope of my rifle again, remembering the news from a few days ago that their nation's monarchy had been dissolved and replaced. Why am I still here? Why did I even come here? I released my finger from the trigger, continuing to stare as the three talked and laughed. Tears slowly rolled down my cheeks, as I watched my sister care for others, more than she cared for me.
I walked back to camp, defeated in more ways than one, sitting down by the smoldering fire. I'm kinda thankful I wasn't able to kill Unga. I slowly began packing up. He’s helped my sister, which also helps Glenchin, and he defended our border against all odds. He's a Glenchinite but that's just a word an identifier, he just wants people like me to cease existing, so the world can be a better place. Ardosus deserves him, and I deserve to go away never to show my face around them ever again, it's only natural.
I began my journey back up the mountain to that village. “Ah, so you’ve come back,” a villager said walking up to me as I unloaded my gear. I nodded. “I’ve done what I needed to do,” I said, lowering my hood. “Well do come by the contractor's house, he’s got a lot more things now.” I nodded, beginning to pitch up my tent. “You know there's an open house.” I shook my head. “This will do.” “Alright you do you.” He walked away and once I had set up camp. I went inside my tent with a box of antlers and a knife. I used to carve these things with ornate decorations, until mom replaced these with books. I wonder if I still have a small niche for it. I sunk my knife into an antler. Oh yeah that's already a bad cut.
MONTHS LATER
ARDOSUS
“Why are they being such a pain?” I said over looking the document for the non-aggression pact, Unga sitting down at the table with me. “These are still technically the last remnants of the Empire, it should be expected that they would refuse such a proposal,” he said. I shook my head. “It just doesn't make any sense.” Unga nodded. “For some it doesn't have to, it just needs to send a massage,” I sighed, then hearing the cries of our child. I slammed the papers onto the table and stood up, but Unga grabbed my hand. “Ardosus, relax, I got this,” he said. I exhaled, nodding as I sat back down, and he walked over to the child's room.
I can’t believe we haven't come up with a name for that little bugger. I giggled a bit. And he's growing up so fast, I wish he could stay little with those fat little chubby cheeks, but I guess sooner or later they must grow old, so I better enjoy this while I can. I then heard a sound of clashing with yelling coming from the child's room. I grabbed my sword and rushed in. Seeing Unga lying on the ground with at least four bodies around him, gasping for air with a wound in one of his lungs. I immediately came to his side, applying all my might onto the wound. “Ardosus,” Unga said struggling to breath. “They have our kid, they took him.” The guards then came rushing in. “Get him to the doctor,” I yelled. They both nodded and picked up Unga, the both of then running out in a heartbeat. I then ran out to the balcony, seeing two men jumping in between towers with one carrying the child, his cries echoing throughout the castle. I quickly made my way down the stairwell, still in my nightwear and into the courtyard, seeing them hop over the walls, everyone oblivious to them.
I ran to the outside of the gates, my eyes emitting a yellowish orange onto the bare ground, as I charged forward in the direction of the small group, as they put some distance away from the castle, moving at a speed that shouldn’t be possible. I pushed myself, and as I gained ground they turned their heads, running even faster. A light on there sides growing brighter, but it didn’t matter. I approached the behind of one, jumping forward, having my sword come down onto him, slicing the assassin into two. The next one saw this, igniting the flames at his side even more as he dashed towards an uncross-able ravine. surely he doesn't mean to. My eyes widened and I continued my chase and as I got close to him, I extended my hand to grab his back, but he jumped into the air igniting his sides into a great burst, flying across the large gap, I slammed my foot to the ground, as I came to the very edge, then stepping back, my legs shaking.
I stared at the man, powerless to do anything as the cries of our child grew more distant and distant. I didn’t know what to think or to feel, I just stood there wide eyed, my head empty of thought, and once my legs were unable to support me, I collapsed. It didn’t take long for the guards to find me. They already released a manhunt and plastered the man's mask everywhere, but at this point I knew he was long gone. He's probably off the mountain by now. The guards radio then sounded off, a sense of sorrow suddenly being brought unto them, they then brought me to the infirmary, they didn’t tell me much, just that Unga was inside and as I walked in, and made my way to Unga’s section. Everyone was standing outside the door, their heads hanging low and not uttering a single word.
I continued through bracing myself, and saw Unga motionless, I walked forward. Please, no. I placed my ear over his heart, not even a pulse or a slight murmur. I sat down and laid my head across his chest, clutching his hand. “I failed Unga, to bring him back.” Slight tears flowing down my cheeks. “But I’ll make sure to find this bastard,” I said as I looked up at him. Then touching our foreheads together, and placing my lips onto his cold mouth, I then slowly arose, still holding onto Unga’s hand, but as I slowly walked away I allowed it to leave my grasps.
I stepped out of the room, everyone staring at me. “I want a full investigation conducted on this immediately.” Everyone nodded. “Ardosus, what about the body,” one said. I paused fighting back the tears. “I’ll see that the funeral is… done.” It is out of my hands now, hopefully that rat bastard is found so I can get my son, and sink my sword into his chest cavity. “I will be in the library waiting for a report,” I said walking away from the crowd. Their eyes, following me. Who would even want to do this? What purpose does our child have to do with whatever they have in store and how did they even get in? I pressed my head against the door of the library.
My chambers are mine once again, I’ll sleep alone this time with the terror of waking up, knowing what was once there. I then stepped in with what will power I had, taking in the rooms silence, remembering those brutal few seconds. I walked across the library, opening the door to Ungas old room which he converted into his office, grabbing the book Unga was working on, looking through it, every page filled with detail and my drawings adding more to what was already a masterpiece. A man then walked in dressed in white along with a diplomat. “May I ask when the funeral will take place, so that I may prepare for the king's departure,” the man in white said. “As soon as possible,” I said. The diplomat then stepped forward. “My Queen, he is a foreigner on our land, a foreigner highly prized by his people, they would want him buried where he was born.” I looked up at the diplomat. “He is my mate, my friend, someone who saved me from myself and the years of lies I’ve been fed, I do not care for the bickering of some nationals.” My voice, turning to ice. The diplomat nodded, stepping back, and the man in white nodded. “I will bring this to my utmost priority. It will be an event that everyone will honor,” he said and they both walked out as I started sifting through our old photos. Choosing to remember and embrace what I lost. Hopefully we’ll find him Unga, and if we don’t I’ll keep on searching.
A FEW DAYS LATER
I stared at the hedge stone, my legs sore from sitting for far to long. I then felt the hand of Ungas father press against my back. “I’m sorry Ardosus,” he said. “We haven't found anything on who it could be,” I said. "Give it time, sooner or later they're going to slip up." I stared at the words on the hedgestone, reading them over and over agian in my head. "The Queens pillar." Written under Ungas name. "The kid loved you to his core," he said. I remained emotionless, moving my head down to stare at the packed dirt. "Sorry if that added more weight to the whole thing." I shook my head, and smiled a little. "I'm happy that he felt that way. I just wish things didn't come to this, but I guess I'm lucky that I experienced it when I could… You know he almost didn’t pick me because, well, you know." Ungas father nodded. "His fear almost cost him a wife." I looked at him, cocked eyed. "Sorry, mate, it's odd having to adjust to different terminology."
I nodded and looked back down at the tombstone. “I must be going, and although I am out of my league when it comes to finding a murderer and kidnapper, I cannot just sit around and feel sorry," I said. He stood up with me. "Then I wish you luck and that you bring these people to justice, for my son, for my grandchild." I nodded with a flame burning inside me, and proceeded to walk up to my chambers, sitting at my desk, looking over the reports of the investigation, the words becoming hard to read as I went over the details from both the autopsy and how they think they got in how Unga might have just been an unintended consiqence. I can't blame anyone for this. It was unexpected and their equipment couldn't have been civilian, but the question that everyone else has had, including me, is what was the purpose of kidnapping our poor child. I tried my best to come to a conclusion, but the only ones I could come up with is a ransom of some kind, but they haven't given us anything of that kind, it’s just been complete darkness.
I heard the sound of a light footstep with the same aurora that I’ve always known. I immediately got up sword drawn, pinning my sister against the wall with my arm against her throat, the sword just barely touching her neck. “Relax Ardosus, I’m here to help.” I pressed my arm against her throat harder. “Oh, that's really funny, because all I heard was gargling horse shit.” “Ardosus, please.” She removed her coat which had carefully carved antlers decorated across it, revealing that she was in fact, bare naked, and was without any sort of weapon. I removed my sword, but kept my arm against her throat. “I see,” she said, placing her hands onto her hips. “Now that you’ll listen to me,” she said, with a pout on her face. “I want to help.” I laughed. “You tried killing my mate, whatever sense of trust I placed in you is gone, get out, I have more important things to deal with.” I released her, and she shrugged. “I understand,” she said, walking towards the balcony. “But you understand my skills, and surely you understand that these are no normal kidnappers, I mean to have the balls to kill the mate of the Queen of Glenchin, and kidnap her son, surely they must have a death wish.” She kept walking towards the balcony. “Wait,” I said softly. Her ears perked up on the top of her head. “Why help me.” Her confident face then turned soft. “I saw you two, I saw how happy you were, I saw Unga’s true intentions, and what you two did, Unga will forever be a man of many nations and kingdoms, everyone of them will consider him their own, and in my eyes he's a Glenchinite through and through,” she said almost as if she was pitying herself. “All I need is your word,” I said reluctantly, extending my hand. She walked up, immediately shaking it. “I have one request.” I cocked my head. “Can you please take me off the wanted list.”
END.
