Chapter Two: Tree Trunk Disaster

Chapter Two: Tree Trunk Disaster

As the weeks went by, Sean and Amethyst grew closer. She never said yes to his offer, so he would stop by around noon every day to ask again, and every time she said the same thing. He would sit and watch her water and tend to her garden. He used to try to help out until he realized he wasn't that good at the whole fragile crops thing. So instead he made a sprinkling system out of old straw! He ran the straw through the soil and put a few holes in it, now all she had to do was shoot some water in the end and watch the beautiful arcs of water spray all over her crops. It was so efficient she was able to grow almost twice the amount of carrots and celery as usual!

And what better way to thank a tinker than making him something! Amethyst wove a tight bracelet made of only the finest vines. It was a nice gesture and Sean wore it everyday since. Now, as even more time went on, a few light fairies warned everyone of an incoming storm. Everyone had prepared for rain, wind, flooding, droughts, hail, anything you can think of. They planned for it many times over, but the one thing they never thought would happen, never in a million years, was a tornado. They had never even heard of a tornado by their hilltop, let alone seen one! Everything was calm, sweet, nobody ever worried or fought, it was so peaceful. One day changed that all.

It was a cloudy day, not much sunshine and it drizzled here and there, so Amethyst took the day off. She rested her tired small wings on her leaf woven couch and smiled, finally having a day to herself not having to worry about anything. The wind started to pick up after a few nice hours of complete silence. Amethyst reluctantly got up to look outside, her small grape vine square of a building wasn’t the best but it had a spectacular view. She could see for miles in every direction! All the humans' colossal mansions towered above all the neighboring fairy villages.

As amazing as the view was, today didn’t look too good anymore. In the far far distance, a small black cloud began spiraling into itself. She turned her head in confusion as the spiral plummeted to the ground. As she stood there staring at the tunneling cloud, all of a sudden a bell began to ring. A voice echoed throughout the oak tree branches bellowing a word she couldn't quite make out. She walked over the small wooden door wondering what the ringing was for, and as she opened the door, her heart had begun to sink. Fairies flying in every direction, scattering for safe shelter. Amethyst became scared and nervous not having any clue what was going on! She rushed out asking any fairy she could find for help.

“What’s going on? Slow down! Someone talk to me.” She murmured. No one would listen and no one would tell her what was going on! Everyone was running around, grabbing their tools and family as quickly as they could. No one was paying any attention to her. Then, Sean came bursting through the crowd of distraught fairies and grabbed Amethyst by the arm in a panic.

“COME ON! WE NEED TO GO! THE BUNKER SHOULD HOLD EVERYONE! THE BASE OF THE TRUNK! LET'S GO!” He shouted. The rush, the chaos, the destruction, everything around froze Amethyst. She stood in sheer horror, standing still, no movement no matter how much Sean pulled. She heard the sound of her heart beating, drowning the real world out. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING MISTY? LET’S GO! WE NEED TO GO!” He screamed one more. She looked at him, fear struck in her heart as wind began to rip through the houses of nearby fairies. The leaves whipping through the air smacking others down to the ground. Sean grabbed her waist and threw her over his shoulder, rushing to the base of the oak tree. Her heart was beating a million miles an hour as she swung across Sean’s shoulder, feeling stiff as a log.

The frantic fairies, the wind wisping past her eardrums, the screams of fairies rushing all around her. Sean’s hands gripped her tight as he flew quickly yet carefully down the tree. Diving through the narrow openings between debris. As his wings began to tire, he could see the trunk only feet away. Sean gave his all to make it down safely, Amethyst tight between his grasp. Alas, between the bark, leaves, and rubble whistling past and the hurling winds pulling him down, Sean was hit right before he dove into the trunk opening. The thin piece of mulch from the human farms hundreds of feet away, had drifted with the wind only to strike Sean’s arm inches from safety. His arm was badly injured as he crashed down to earth. Hitting the ground with Misty clenched between his arms.

As he plummeted to the ground, he landed perfectly into safety. All other fairies jumped back as he hit the ground. A moment of fear had everyone standing still, complete silence from the sheer shock of everyone. Sean’s best friend came rushing to his side, screaming his name. Amethyst rolled out of his arms out cold from the crash and Sean laid still without a word. Blood flowed out of his arm like water down a stream as his friend Marc rushed to his side. The guy hadn’t run in who knows how long, but his best friend lying motionless gave him a reason.

Marc dropped to his knees with a thud beside Sean clenching his fists tight, trying his hardest to hold back the tears. The gentle giant laid his hand against Sean’s chest and gently nudged him. The fairies around, frantic for medical supplies, hurried with water, bandages, and anything they could find. Sean still lied stiff as the blood started to accumulate around him. Marc dug his hands under Sean’s back and gently picked him up. “Sean hurt, friend not good. Help friend!” Marc said with a grunt.

Placing Sean down on a small toothpick table, Marc gently stepped back as the fairy nurses rushed in. The roar of the storm echoed throughout the hollow trunk as Amethyst began awaking. Her eyelids lifted slowly, blurry figures rushing around a table, others hiding in a group. She spots a figure as she rolls to the side, holding her hip as she slowly tries to move. A giant fairy twiddling his thumbs nervously as he rocks back and forth staring at the group of nurses. Amethyst slowly gets up with a faint sigh, trying to gain her balance. She loses her footing trying to approach the table and trips. A nurse in the crowd quickly grabs her, keeping her upright.

The nurse spoke in a soft concerned voice “A-Are you ok Miss? You and that boy had quite the fall!”

“Fall? What fall?...Sean! Where is he? Is he ok?” She said quickly in remembrance of what happened. All shyness, anxiety, or nervousness faded away worrying about Sean. Her heart began to race thinking of the innocent tinker that only wanted her to have a glass of juice with him.

The nurse sat her down on a small bench along the trunk wall. “Ma’am, that boy…he was injured pretty badly. His arm was gashed and the nurses are doing everything they can to help him. I’m sorry.”

Amethyst held her breath for a few seconds, noticing the pool of blood only a few feet away. Her eyes focused onto the puddle as her heart began to sink even lower. A thick stream of blood heading towards the table had her speechless. The nurse sighed and laid her hand upon Amethyst's shoulder before walking away. Amethyst’s head fell into her arms as she began to sob. Tears fell down her face in sorrow as the crowd of scared nervous fairies began staring at her. Marc looked over to see who was crying and saw the fairy Sean talked so much about. He stopped playing with his thumbs nervously and gently walked over to her. He sat down beside her and poked her shoulder.

Amethyst sniffled and looked up at the giant, a big smile grew over his face. “Look there!” He said as his finger pointed to the table surrounded by nurses. Marc smiled at her and said with joy “That my friend. That your friend! He going to be good. Nurse stitch well. Sean be fine. You be fine!” Marc lifted his finger and wiped away Amethyst tears. She sniffed once more and looked to the table.

“Thank you. You’re Sean’s friend?” She said, wiping away the rest of her tears.

“Yes. Sean friend. My name Marc. You Amethyst!” He said with a big smile. “Sean talk about you lots!” He chuckled remembering how happy Sean was talking about her, and smirked looking into Amethyst’s cloudy eyes and smirked knowing how much Sean cared about her.
