Chapter 016 - The Island Has Eyes

Chapter 016 - The Island Has Eyes

“Look out!” Verne yelled as he saw giant spikes grow out from the Lure Island’s back. The Lure Island took in a deep breath of air (and also swallowed a bit of water), and then shot out the giant spikes at the players. The spikes flew high in the air and crashed down into the rock platforms everyone was standing on. Q and Brie were able to jump off onto another platform in time, but everyone else fell back into the water.

“Verne, help Kukis!” Q said as she ran around the platforms, looking for a place to jump up onto the Lure Island.

The Crios Blades members all helped each other (and Kukis) get back up onto a platform, and wondered what they should do from there. “Grr… none of us can move like Q or Brie… what can we do?” Verne gritted his teeth in frustration. Suddenly he heard Q shout at him, “Verne, there are things in the water! Be careful!”

Verne looked into the water and noticed that there were small fish swimming there that hadn’t been there before! A quick investigation revealed that the Lure Island was spawning them from its open mouth.

[Lure Fish] - Level 10

“Melun, Aeryn, can your attacks reach them?” Verne asked, looking down at the fish which were slowly surrounding their rock.

“My arrows don't fly too far in the water. If they’re near the surface I can hit some, but other than that I can’t do much.”

“Sorry to say but I don’t have a lot of spells that will work on underwater things. The best I can do is use [Pebble Shot] and hope it does something.”

“Okay, Melun and Aeryn, stand on opposite sides of the rock. Me and Neira will balance out the other sides while Kukis will protect Fortis in the center.” Everyone moved according to his commands, and they tried to balance the rock. Melun and Aeryn were able to kill a few of the fish, but there were far too many surrounding the rock for their kills to make a difference. Every so often Verne and Neira would try to make a stab at the fish, but they almost fell over instead from leaning too far.

While the Crios Blades (and Kukis) were struggling, Q and Brie also had their fair share of troubles. The Lure Island’s attention was focused on the two of them, and it would constantly shoot out a giant spike to destroy their platform and keep them on the run. At one point Q was close enough to touch the Lure Island, but it’s sides were too slippery and she couldn’t get a hold on it to climb up.

“Ahh man! This thing’s sides are too wet! I can’t climb up it.” Q complained.

“Yes, if we had a foothold things would be far easier.” Brie was similarly frustrated at not being able to climb up the monster.

“Foothold… that’s it! Melun!” Q shouted to the distant Crios Blades. “Can your arrows pierce through the Lure Island’s body?”

“I can try! [Hawk Eye], [Precision Shot]!” Melun fired an arrow and it was shot with enough force to successfully bury itself into the Lure Island’s body.

“Alright! Can you keep shooting at the same general area? I need a foothold to jump up onto the Lure Island!”

“Q, you’re crazy!” Melun yelled. “But… I like crazy! I have a 30 second cool-down, so wait until then!” Melun said as she tried shooting some more fish.

“Okay… now to keep this thing’s attention.” Q muttered as the Lure Island slowly began to turn towards Melun. “[Spark]!” Q reached out as far as she could so that her spell would hit the enemy. Ever since she levelled up and got points in her intelligence and wisdom, her spark spell became stronger and reached farther than it had initially. With the levels the spell had gained from constant use, it now had the range of almost a meter, and was able to reach the Lure Island.

The Lure Island returned its attention on Q, and her struggle began anew. Every 30 seconds Melun would shoot another arrow and would slowly increase the size of the foothold. By the time she shot enough arrows for a decent foothold, the Lure Island’s health also fell down to 90%. The Crios Blades were able to clear out a decent amount of fish, but there were still a lot left surrounding them.

“Brie, are you ready?” Q said, preparing herself to jump up onto the foothold.

Brie seemed a little hesitant, but seeing the look in Q’s eyes she nodded and began to prepare herself as well. “Alright then, here I go!” Q took a running start and jumped onto the foothold. For a moment the arrows bent a little, but they held long enough for Q to jump again and stab her dagger deep into the creature’s side. This elicited a roar from the Lure Island, as it tried to shake Q off. Fortunately Q had buried her dagger deep into the creature’s side, so she was able to hang on.

“Brie!” Q called for her and she nodded, jumping up onto the foothold as well. The moment Brie landed on the arrows, she heard a crack, and without hesitation she jumped up and reached for Q’s outstretched hand. As soon as she exerted force on the foothold, it broke, but Brie was still able to grab onto Q in time. “Nice. I’m going to swing you up now okay?” Q said as she slowly rocked back and forth, picking up momentum.

Once she had enough momentum, she swung Brie up with all of her force and let go, causing Brie to fly up high into the air, and right onto the Lure Island’s back. When Brie stabilised herself on top of the creature, she stabbed her sword into its back for support as she reached down to pull up Q. With a bit of effort, she successfully pulled her up and the two of them made it on top of the Lure Island.

“Hmm… this surface is quite soft.” Brie noted as she treaded on the island.

“No! It isn’t soft, it’s squishy! There’s a VERY big difference between the two!” Q suddenly shouted out, quickly running on the island. She noticed a slightly larger mound than usual on the Lure Island and decided to investigate it.

“What kind of difference would that be?” Brie asked, following Q.

“You see, soft is a feel from touching a surface. The feel is transferred mainly by the surface, and the inside of whatever you’re touching is irrelevant.” Q said while stabbing random parts of the island. “While most of the time soft and squishy go together, they are different things entirely. Soft being the feeling of a surface, while squishy is a reaction to being pressed. This island isn’t soft at all, It’s just smooth.”

“I see… You have very specific qualifications when it comes to soft items.” Brie stabbed a mound that appeared near her.

“Yeah. In order to enjoy optimal softness, only the items that pass my check would be considered soft.”

“Could you two focus on the battle a bit more? And why are you so composed!?” Kukis cried as she struggled to stay on top of her rock. With Q and Brie on top of the Lure Island, it stopped attacking them and instead focused on the Crios Blades. “Uh-oh. Guys, we need to move!” Fortis yelled out as he noticed that the Lure Island changed targets.

“There isn’t a rock close enough!” Melun said, panicking as the Lure Island got closer and closer.

“... I got it! Everyone come to the center of the rock!” Aeryn said as she moved to the center of the rock. Everyone gathered at the center, and then Aeryn began chanting a spell. “Spirits of the wind, obey my call! Bring forth a gale, [Wind Blast]!”

Once she had finished the spell, a strong gust of wind came out from her staff and the recoil from firing out the spell allowed the rock to begin drifting towards another one. “Nice job Aeryn!” Verne said as he gauged the distance from their rock to the nearby one. “Okay, I think we’re close enough if we do a running jump! I’ll go first!” Verne leaped over the gap between the two rocks, and was just barely able to make it to the other side.

The rest of the players all followed him and got over without incident. As soon as they left the platform the Lure Island shot out a giant spike at the platform, breaking it. The Crios Blades began a new struggle, madly hopping from one rock to another as the Lure Island kept shooting its spikes at them.

Meanwhile, Q and Brie were trying to find the Lure Island’s weak point. Each of the mounds they saw turned out to be a giant spike that the Lure Island was currently spawning. Whenever they attacked them it would delay the spike from coming out a for a while, but in the end it would still shoot out.

“Weak point~, weak point~, where are you weak point~?”

“What manner of song is that?” Brie asked, attacking another mound that appeared near her. Q ignored her though as she continued to sing.

“Soon you shall see~

you can’t hide it from me~

You don’t have any joints~,

So where’s your weak points~?”

As she sang her song, Q realized something. Hm? If it’s anything like the previous Lure creatures it has to have some joints of some kind. And if there’s nothing up here then… In the water! After having her revelation, Q looked over at Brie. “Brie stay here and delay the giant spikes. I’m going for a swim!”

Before Brie could say anything Q jumped off of the Lure Island and dived into the water. Luckily there weren’t many Lure Fish around as most of them were focused on the Crios Blades. For the few that approached her, she simply cast [Spark] and was able to kill most of them. A few got by, and for a moment Q had a bit of trouble with trying to slash at them in the water. She tensed her body and narrowed her eyes, and the world seemed to move a bit slower than usual.

Reading the fish’s movements, Q slashed at the place she predicted it would be. Unfortunately she missed, but it caused the fish to back off and that bought enough time for her to cast another [Spark], killing the rest of the fish. With nothing in her way, Q re-surfaced to take a breath of air. When her head popped out of the water she found a concerned looking Brie but she gave a smile to reassure her as she dived back into the water.

Underwater, Q found that the Lure Island’s legs were similar to those of the Lure Flowers, being short and stumpy. She suddenly noticed that there was a slight glow from underneath the Lure Island. Q approached it and found that the source of the glow was a large shiny gemstone which covered the entire underbelly of the Lure Island. Hiding your weak point where people can’t reach it easily? Clever girl… or, whatever gender you are. Q thought as she swam towards it.

Once she got underneath the Lure Island, she cast [Spark], [Magic Fist], and began to slice at it with her claws and dagger. This caused an immense reaction from the Lure Island as it instantly lost 5% of its health. It let out a huge roar as it felt its weak spot being attacked. The gemstone let out a powerful glow as it let out an invisible force which pushed Q backwards. The roar of the Lure Island also attracted the Lure Fish, and once they got close enough they began to attack Q.

Eyes widening, Q swam up as quickly as she could, casting [Spark] when she could to keep the fish at bay. Eventually she managed to surface right where the Crios Blade were, frightening them out of their skins. “HOLY-! Q, how did you get over here?” Kukis asked as she pulled Q up.

“No time to explain, it’s weak point is underneath it!” Q said, gasping for air. “Is anyone here a good swimmer?” She looked at the Crios Blades for any volunteers. Neira raised her hand, as she explained, “I swim as a hobby in real life. I should be able to help out if I remove my heavy equipments.”

“Okay, sounds good. Verne, can you keep the fishes attention on you? It’s annoying to deal with them underwater.”

“Underwater!?” Verne was surprised for a moment, hearing that Q was fighting underwater. “I- Okay, but we can’t exactly keep them here the entire time. Besides, the Island is shooting spikes at us so we can’t stay in the same spot for very long.”

“No problem on that front. Brie should be keeping most of the spikes from launching at you so you should have enough time to attract the fishes and then move to another platform.” Q said, indicating the top of the Lure Island. Brie was indeed there, constantly stabbing the mounds and dealing damage to the Lure Island. She seemed to notice everyone’s gazes on her, and she gave a wave before going back to stabbing the mounds.

Just as Q and Neira were getting ready to dive in the water, Verne stopped them with a question. “Wait, how are we supposed to keep the fishes on us?” He asked.

“Hmm…” Q thought for a moment before giving him a solution. “How do you normally catch a fish?” She asked with a mischievous grin. “You use bait.” She then jumped into the water, followed by Neira as the two of them swam back to the bottom of the lake.

“Bait? What can we use as bait…? The only thing the fishes seem attracted by are people...” Kukis wondered aloud as she tried thinking of what they could use. The Crios blades all stared at her intently before taking a step towards her.

“Hey… what are you all doing?” Kukis asked nervously.

“They’re only attracted by people right...?” Melun said with a smile.

“If that’s the case, we should use a person as bait!” Aeryn finished, grabbing onto Kukis.

“W- wait! Stop! You can’t make me do this! Stoooooop!!!” Kukis’ cries were ignored as the Crios blades dipped her into the water, causing the Lure Fishes to be attracted with all the movement she was making. “I’ll get you back for this!” She yelled as she watched the fishes approach with horror.

Meanwhile, Q and Neira reached the bottom of the Lure Island. Approaching the gemstone, Q demonstrated that people could cast spells underwater by throwing out a [Spark]. Neira’s eyes widened at this, but she quickly nodded in understanding as she used a skill of her own. Both of the girls began attacking the gemstone at the same time, quickly dropping the Lure Island’s health down to 70%. The Lure Island roared again, pushing the two back and attracting the fish. They made their way back to the surface to catch their breath, and then dived back in.

From then on the battle was a pattern of Q and Neira diving down to deal damage, and then resurfacing to take a breath of air. While they were underwater, the Crios Blades attracted the fishes with their newfound ‘bait’, and kept them away from Q and Neira. While they did this Melun and Aeryn also shot the occasional arrow or spell towards the Lure Island and contributed to the overall damage. Brie was still on top of the Lure Island, and whenever she saw a spike headed towards the Crios Blades she would warn them and keep the spike from being shot out. In this fashion the Lure Island’s health dropped down to 20%, and then it changed its tactics.

It suddenly rushed forward, heading towards the Crios Blades with a speed incomparable to before. This caused them to panic as they all scrambled to get off their platform which was promptly chomped into bits by the Lure Island. When the Lure Island moved away, Q and Neira found themselves unable to keep up with its speed and had to resurface. When they came up out of the water though the Lure Island noticed and came speeding right towards them!

“Q, look out!” Brie cried from atop the Lure Island. As soon as Q noticed that the island was heading towards her, she instantly pushed Neira away from her and jumped over to another platform. The Lure Island ignored Neira and followed Q, chasing her as she jumped from one platform to another. To everyone’s horror, the platforms began to run out and Q had nowhere to run to!

“Q!” Kukis screamed.

“Q get out of there!” The Crios blades were all yelling at her to move away, but she simply didn’t have anywhere else to go. Closing her eyes, Q steadied her breathing as she tensed her body and narrowed her eyes. This time, the world began moving in slow motion, and Q activated her racial skill.

“[Beast Within]!” As soon as she activated her skill, she instantly leaped forward into the gaping maw of the Lure Island! The rest of the players were absolutely shocked. They thought she might dive to the side, but instead she jumped right into the mouth! Seeing her disappear into its mouth as the Lure Island closed it, everyone began calling out her name in desperation.

They didn’t get an answer though, and all of them were completely silent. The Lure Island also stopped moving, as if feeling accomplished that it had finally killed one of the players. For a moment, there wasn’t any movement until suddenly the Lure Island twitched. The players all looked at its health bar and found that it had actually fallen a bit!

“Oh my god, she’s attacking it from the inside!”

“How does she even!?”

“This girl has guts…”

All the players were absolutely stupefied, discovering that Q had unexpectedly turned her potential death into an opportunity for dealing damage. Seeing that Q was still attacking it from the inside, it stirred up everyone’s fighting spirits as they also began to attack the Lure Island with more vigor. The Lure Island’s health dropped down to 15%, and it turned towards the players. It opened its mouth, and whether it was trying to roar or swallow the players they would never know, as they all saw the image of Q with a powerful glow around her.

“[Arcane Overload]!!!”

An intense light emitted from Q, and wherever it touched it caused the Lure Island to take damage. This wasn’t the rest of it though, as suddenly all the light gathered at Q, and then exploded in a blast of pure energy! All the players covered their eyes as the light began to eviscerate the Lure Island.

Unfortunately this didn’t kill the Lure Island though, as it was left with just 1% health left. Just as the players were about to attack it again, they noticed that Q had just drank a mana potion and threw the vial away.

“[Magic Fist - Arcane Overload]!"  She yelled as she punched the Lure Island and emitted the same light and destructive force. The power of this attack was a bit weaker since she wasn’t at full mana, but it was still more than enough to finish off the monster. Once the boss’s health dropped down to zero, the cavern was completely silent for a moment before everyone began cheering.

“THAT WAS AWESOME!!!” Kukis yelled.

“HAHAHA, that damage was insane!” Verne was laughing in relief now that the boss was dead.

“Wow… just wow.” Fortis could barely find any words to say after witnessing that event.

“Q, be mai waifu!” Melun screamed out.

“Incredible work Q.” Neira nodded in respect.

“This makes me like you even more. Ufufufu~.” Aeryn laughed as she watched Q make her way back while rubbing her temples.

“Hm? What happened everyone? What was that bright light?” Brie was the only one who didn’t fully grasp the situation, but for now everyone was just relieved that they had gotten through that boss battle alive.

Oh boy, I didn’t think the spell would be that strong. Though with the backlash of having no mana afterwards, it can really only be used as a trump card. Q thought as she tried to shake off the woozy feeling from running out of mana. She eventually got back to her friends and smiled, saying, “That was fun.”

[Great Feat Accomplished!] Your party is the first party to successfully complete a dungeon-raid. Would you like to let people know of your accomplishments? Note: every party member must agree to this in order to receive rewards. (YES/NO)

For a while, everyone was completely silent as they addressed their rewards and began to distribute their stats and check their loot. Q looked over her rewards and once she saw the Spell Evolution section, she was quite amazed. So this is what a unique spell can do huh? Well then, I think I’ll choose… Tri-Spark! I’d rather be able to use an ability quickly than release a larger amount of damage...

[Spell Evolution] - Congratulations! Your [Spark] has successfully evolved into [Multi-Spark]!

As she read the message Q could swear she heard some fanfare playing once the spell evolved, but brushed it off as she began to trade loot with the other players.

Suffice to say, the rewards they obtained were absolutely phenomenal. Various equipments were passed around to whoever needed it most, and if no one needed a particular piece then they would roll for it using the random system that the game had implemented for loot drops. In the end, Q was able to obtain 2 rings, a new chest piece and some new gloves. In Q’s inventory there was also a small key which she suspected was to be used for the box, so she tried using it and it opened the box, revealing a ruby ring and a note.

[Ring of Trickery (Ring, Rare)] Durability (20/20) A ring worn by gamblers and thieves alike, made for those who want to cheat more easily. Dexterity +4, Luck +4, +1 to level of Stealth Skill.

[Magic Focus (Arms, Magic)] A glove with a mysterious crystal embedded in its center. Increases damage for all spells intermediate level and lower by 10%. Defense +2, Intelligence +3

[Ruby Ring of Flames (Ring, Magic)] It bestows upon its wearer the strength of a fire spirit. Strength +5, Increases all fire type skills/spells damage by 10%, adds a 1% chance to burn with each attack.

[Old Note (Quest Item)] An old note found with a ring at the bottom of an underwater lake. Just how did it get here…?

Q was interested in the note, but decided to leave it for later as she equipped all the new items she had received and addressed everyone else. “So… now that the loot’s all good, who wants to accept that system message?” She asked.

“Do you want to?” Verne replied surprised. “I didn’t think you would because you’re not technically a part of our ‘party’.”

“Really, I just want the rewards.” Q said with a smirk. Letting out a grin of his own, Verne asked everyone if they were fine with accepting the message, and they all did. The screen then asked for a party name, to which Verne entered in “The Crios Blades”.

“All in all, I have to say this was really fun partying with you guys.” Q said with a contented smile.

“I feel the same way.” Verne closed his eyes and simply basked in the aftermath of the battle.

“But you know… there’s one thing that’s bothering me.” Q said with an uncertain tone of voice.

“What’s bothering you?” Melun said while lazily laying down and resting.

A/N: BWAHAHAHA! I don't know why I evil laughed just there, but there you go. This one is double the length of my usual chapters (about 4000 words, while regular ones are 2000-2500) and encompasses a lot of stuff. Hopefully my battles flow well for you guys. Sometimes it didn't go into full detail on what the players were doing, but I feel like you guys can fill in the blank.

So... here we are, at the end of the Crios Blades arc. Feels slightly emotional. But, you don't have to be too sad because you'll be seeing them again in the future. As usual, thanks for reading!

P.S: So it seems that in the previous poll more people voted yes rather than no... hahaha.... HaHaHaHa... HAHAHAHAHHAHA!!! Do you know what that means!?

Spoiler :

Because I don't.

Fun-fact: Humans require less sleep as they grow older. (I haven't reached that state yet though).

Edit: Okay, fixed Q's health and mana.

Now... It seems you guys are confused about the Magic Fist - Arcane Overload combo. Well that's my fault for wording it terribly, but basically up until this point Q was just using her Spark on Magic Fist. When I introduced a new spell well... Yeah, sorry. I reworded both her use of Magic Fist and the description of Magic Fist so hopefully that clears up some confusion.

So what does this mean? It means Q has a broken ability on call every minute XD (but it also eats all her mana so its not something she would constantly use.)

I also imagine it to look like a magic glow covers her fist, and upon hitting something she unleashes the spell point blank at the enemy.
