49: Evil and the Red Knight

49: Evil and the Red Knight

No one spoke for a while. The air was filled with tension as they thought over what they had learned and what they were going to do from then on. Howard began to think over everything they had learned so far. Red eyes signified Dream, not the Bloodcry. The Bloodcry signified Evil. Evil was actually the third type of magic as well as an unfortunate girl. The knights or heroes were supposed to save that girl and stop a war and the Cycle would continue until both of those things happened.

{But is the Evil in the bloodcry the magic, or a clue leading us to the person?} Howard wondered, his thoughts leaking out.

{Good question,} Dorian agreed, {and according to Denewulf he is only one of the knights here. Do any of you feel particularly knightly or like you could save a girl?} He looked over at those with red eyes.

{Don’t look at me,} Nova shot down, {My red eyes might not have anything to do with Dream at all. Besides, I don’t think an Outsider can be a knight. We seem to have a different role.}

{I’m not so sure about that,} James muttered, {Saving the girl could definitely be counted as a revolutionary change.}

{This is all very interesting,} Jonathan mused, {I wonder what color Evil is. Red is taken, so black, perhaps? Very few of the natives have black hair or eyes, even if they are dark. Then again, they all have telepathy at the very least. Black seems to signify lack of any power. In that case something as powerful and dangerous as Evil sounds must be a more vibrant color. White is too blinding and Wisdom seems to be white.}

{Is there a point to this?} Natalie snapped.

{Oh yes,} Jonathan replied with a smile, {Because if I am right about what color Evil is, I am the other knight, and Evil has been teaching me various things since I separated from all of you the first time.}

{Why is the color important?} Selina asked.

{Have you ever noticed how everything here is teal. The leaves of trees turn teal when they soak up the overabundant sunlight. The nightly glowing is a side effect of them discharging the radiation that would make them wither. I met a ghost a few months after I returned to the crash site. She was transparent for the most part, and took on the colors from around her, but at night she also shone teal.}

{So, you are telling us that you met a ghost over a year ago and you hadn’t thought to say anything?} Natalie demanded.

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Jonathan smiled. {Before this, would you have even believed me?} he asked, {Besides, no one asked and I was busy. I thought some of you would notice that my research was progressing too fast but I suppose none of you are that familiar with the process of scientific discovery.}

{The fact that she was a ghost didn’t bother you at all?} Selina asked.

{Of course not. I don’t believe in the classic concept of ghosts. She was clearly not dead but it seemed like she wasn’t all there. At first, I thought it was an advanced form of some kind of long-range telepathy, but she doesn’t seem to know where the rest of her is.}

{Before we can look we are going to have to make sure we aren’t wiped out,} Dorian reminded.

{Have the other side figured out how to respond yet?} Jonathan questioned.

{We haven’t received anything,} Dorian answered, {but I am certain Veda got it. We need to make certain to send a message to the Crimson Colony with everything we found out, but we need to make sure only the knight there can open it.}

{I might have a way,m if you are willing to use that third kind of magic,} Jonathan suggested, {During my tests I had actually already discovered it but I wasn’t sure what it was. Wisdom is an application of knowledge through magic. Dream is creation through imagination. Evil is control through emotion. A dangerous combination, don’t you think?}

{Control through emotion?} Dorian asked, {If you put the three together the magic here isn’t actually that much different than my homeworld, but because magic is based on emotion it is difficult to control. I can see why someone might label it as Evil in comparison to the other two. Control would also explain how they are protected from the sunlight’s radiation.}

{Really?} Selina asked, {It doesn’t sound as bad as I thought it would be, but isn’t it impossible to use more than one magic type?}

{If Wisdom can be given to those who cannot use it through the system, then why not the others? My ghost friend has been transferring Evil to me with a system I created. It took a few tries but I believe it should work fine now.}

{I think we should stop using the supposed genius’s term for that,} Natalie broke in, {Things could turn bad if other people found out we were using magic called Evil. Why don’t we call it what it is, Control.}

{That sounds a lot better,} Miranda agreed, {Though Control still sounds shady. I wish there was another thing to call it.}

{Why don’t we just call it Power?} James suggested, {Those who have power control things, and power can come from emotions. It makes more sense than Control.}

{What should we call the girl?} Selina asked, {We can’t leave her being called Evil like that either. I also don’t think it is flattering to be referred to as a ghost.}

{Spirit?} Dorian suggested.

{Oh, that’s pretty. We can refer to her as Spirit from now on,} Selena agreed.

{Spirit and Power,} Howard muttered to himself. While they fit, together they seemed like something you might hear at a sports game, not as a name and magic.

Just then Howard felt something similar to when he had given Denewulf his name. Impossible. There was no way they had overwritten the name of someone who wasn’t even there.

{What was that?} Selena asked.

{I think that was our first revolution,} Dorian replied, {Once all three of us Sages agreed on the name for the girl and the magic, the old ones started to sound wrong to me.}

{Is that what happened?} Jonathan asked, {Now that you mention it, it takes a lot of focus for me to refer to her as a ghost in my thoughts now. This will take some research.} For some reason he seemed happy about that.
