Chapter 42: The Lion's Den

Chapter 42: The Lion's Den

Zona gets Lupa dressed in some of the extra clothes that she brought. Lupa goes over to the window staring out it. Zona looks at her looking worried. I look at James who is fast asleep. Zona sighs sitting down at the small table in the room. I sit across from her. “What’s next?”

“No idea. We don’t know who they are or what they are. We don’t know anything about them.” I remember that her flames did a lot of damage to the female at least.

“Can’t you just... Burn them?” She frowns focusing on a nearby candle. The flame bounces off the candle dancing around the air.

“Maybe. I think I would be able to destroy them if I went all out.” She returns the flame back to the candle trying to relax. “However, the last time I did that. A large majority of a forest was burnt down. So, no one would need to be around.”

“Only if we can find them, right?” She nods. “Maybe the capital will actually have something for us then? Maybe some information.” Zona lays her head on the table looking like she has a headache. Lupa walks over to else with red hair and dark purple eyes.

“Zona. We need to talk.” The Sister is back. Zona doesn’t raise her head off the table.

“Don’t talk to me Sister.” The Sister glares reaching over grabbing Zona’s hair. She yanks it up causing her to look at her.

“We don’t need you to deal with your pity anger towards me. The world needs saving again.” Zona gets angry standing up. She gets in the Sister’s face glaring at her.

“We are trying. We have no idea what they are. Can you tell us?” Sister frowns looking away from her. Zona smirks angrily. “Of course not. You are alwa-” She stops noticing that the Sister is looking at me.

“She will.” This causes me to stand up somewhat baffled.

“Wait what?” Zona looks at me with a look of concern on her face. She looks back to the Sister.

“What is she?” I look at Zona shocked. The Sister walks over to me.

“She is Seer. She able to see things, understand things, interpret things. Just like Aleem.” I look at her in disbelief.

“.. But I can’t do magic?” She goes to say something but stops as her hair starts to change back to white.

“I don’t have a lot of time left. Go to the capital of the Green Belt and find th-” Lupa blinks taking back control of her body. She heads over to the window staring out it. Zona grumbles looking at me.

“We head to the capital in the morning. It should take us a few days.” Zona heads to bed calling over Lupa. Lupa gets next to Zona and hugs her tight. I slowly head to the other bed getting in next to James.

“... I’m a seer...” Thoughts fill my head as I try to fall asleep. It could be possible with everything that I’ve been seeing. Maybe... I do have magic after all. Before I notice it, I am fast asleep. In the morning, I am awoken by James.

“Want to get some breakfast?” I grumble turning away from him. He makes a sound picking me up. I drag the blanket with me not wanting to leave to warm bed. He sits me on the cold floor causing me to wake up fully. I stand up annoyed as he leaves the room slightly laughing at me. I change not some fresh clothes. I head downstairs seeing him at a table. I glare at him walking over at him. I stop seeing that he has a plate of eggs for me. I roll my eyes sitting down across from him. I slowly eat the eggs trying to hide how much I enjoy them. “Are you still mad at me?” I look away eating more of the eggs. “It was the only way to save Zona.”

“I am not pissed that you used magic. I am upset that you didn’t tell about the healing ability.” He stops eating his food placing down his fork.

“I didn’t want anyone else to know.” I look at him annoyed finishing the rest of my eggs.

“Why?” He takes a sip of his drink trying to find the right words to use.

“Because I didn’t want anyone to go after you to get to me.” I look at him to elaborate. “Think. Someone who has the ability to heal mortally fatal wounds? I didn’t want anyone to find out and go after my family and friends.” I look at him still confused. He sighs giving me a look. “I didn’t want you to get hurt just in case someone found out.” I pause slightly feeling myself blush.

“Oh...” He reaches into his pocket pulling out a vial.

“What are those?” He shakes the vial showing a red liquid.

“My blood.” I stop slightly sickened at the thought.

“... why?” He shrugs putting the vial in his pocket.

“Emergences.” I give him and he rolls his eyes. “Most spells I can use the vials, but healing causing me to use more.” I give him a look slightly annoyed at him. “I will only use my magic for emergencies.” Lupa and Zona appear coming down the stairs. Zona looks at both of us sitting down with Lupa. Lupa still looks out of it with Zona looking somewhat tired. I look at her.

“Are you okay Zona?” She yawns stretching her back out.

“Whatever that man did to me is finally wearing off.” I look at Lupa who slowly looks back to normal. Zona orders some food for both her and Lupa. Once we all eat, we head out to the capital. We decide it is for the best that we stay off the main roads. We spend the next two days travling back roads and cutting through the forest. By the second day, Lupa is finally acting like her old self a relief to all of us. The massive walled city of the capital comes into view. The first thing I notice the massive construction going on everywhere around the wall. Most of the city was destroyed from the assault from Lupa, the military, and other factors. We get in line of carts to head into the city. Zona and Lupa disguise themselves to hide their appearance. We get to the front of the line and some soldiers start to look us over. One of the men looks at Zona.

“What is your reason for coming to the capital?” Zona motions for James. James pops his head out of the back of the cart putting on a smile.

“I am here to join the military. My friends want to spend one last day with me in the city.” I frown slightly hating this part of the plan. I really don’t want him getting into trouble.

“Of course. Welcome to the city future solider.” The man waves us through allowing us to enter the captial.

Most of the city has been rebuilt except for the large portion of the wall. They are still rebuilding it. Many citizens throughout the city are helping the rebuilding, but most of them are going throughout their daily lives. Zona pulls the cart over near the stables. Zona looks around the place looking slightly on guard. From what we understand, a lot of trouble been came from the city. We get out of the cart staying close to Zona and Lupa. Zona looks at both of us. “Stay by our sides. Don’t talk to anyone. Understood?” James and I nod as Lupa looks around excited.

“Can we explore after we get the thing we came for?” Zona pauses and sighs.

“Yes. Only after...” She stops staring at the town square. A few street performers are dancing trying to show the crowd a good time. A decently sized crowd has started cheering. Zona seems to zone out slowly raising her hand. Lupa reacts fast grabbing ahold of Zona’s hand pulling her inside a nearby shop. Lupa gives me a look mouthing we will meet back up later. I stop not really knowing what to do. I look at James deciding to shoot my shot. I grab a hold of his hand pulling him away from Zona and Lupa. James looks down at me somewhat confused.

“We need to follow them?”

“We are grownups James. We can handle stuff ourselves.” He gets a slightly mischievous grin on his face. I lead him throughout the city trying to find a beautiful site. We finally stumble upon a large garden. The garden is next to an expensive home. I smile looking at a bunch of beautiful flowers. A few ducklings walk pass our path following their mother. I look at them thinking that they are adorable. I beautiful rose catches my eye causing me to stare at it.

“Like what you see?” I nod happily looking James looks around. He quickly picks it. I frown slightly.

“Why did you do that?” He dethorns and places it in my hair. He smiles placing his hand on my face.

“Beautiful.” I frown feeling my cheeks get red. I look away from him. He laughs slightly sucking on his thumb for a second. He spits out some blood on the ground as we continue through the park. Before we leave, we see a statue toward the end of it. We walk towards it seeing it is some handsome man with demonic armor on. “Hmm.. Dedicated to captain Jake Wilson. Never heard of the guy.” I stare at the small set of symbols on the armor and I blink. My head starts to go fuzzy and before I can react, I am in a different place. I look around before falling to the ground as the man in the demonic armor charges past me. He cuts down another strange looking monster. He looks around wiping his hair out of his eyes. He places his sword into his hilt as one someone approaches him. It’s the woman that Zona burned. However, she has blonde hair and green eyes. She is also wearing armor similar to the man.

“Jake, we need to move on.” Jake looks at her as she cleans her daggers.

“No. We aren’t done yet Lillian. We need to find Grant.” A man runs out carrying a warhammer. A weird looking monster charges behind him. Lillian throws a dagger as Grant slides hitting the monster in the face. Grant turns around slamming his warhammer into the creature's skull causing blood to spatter all over him. Grant smiles looking back at Jake and Lillian. His blonde hair and blue eyes shine in the setting sun. He walks over to the pair.

“Thanks for the save sister.” Lillian smiles giving Grant a hug. She pulls away looking at the destruction that surround the three of them.

“Where did these things come from?” Jake walks over to the creature examining it. He draws his sword slicing it down it’s stomach. He studies it for a few moments as loud thunderous steps are heard within the forest. Jake, Grant, and Lillian ready themselves as a hulking mass of darkness. The creature is similar to what a troll looks like. The creature roars at the three causing them to spilt up. Jake charges forward distracting the creature. Grant and Lillian flank the hulking being. The thing tries to attack Jake barely missing him as Jake slides underneath its legs. Jake takes his sword slicing both of its legs in one swipe. As the creature stumbles forward, Grant takes his warhammer slamming it in the side of the creature’s leg to break. The creature screams in pain falling to it’s side. Lillian flawlessly jumps onto the creatures side running up it’s arm. She lands on his head driving both of her daggers into the skull. The creature lets out a small groan falling over dead. Jake stans up dusting himself off. Lillian hops off the creature smiling happily as she cleans her blades. Grant walks over to her.

“You always have to finish with style don’t you?” She smirks sticking her tongue at him.

“Maybe.” Jake starts to walk toward them as the ground starts to shake. I look up to see a black cloud slowly forming over head as the air grows frigid. Familiar black tendrils raise up out of the troll like creature. They fly toward Jake before he deflects them with his sword. He starts to cut them away as Grant runs over slamming his warhammer into the mass of tendrils. The tendrils stop focusing on Jake turning toward Grant. Grant takes wrapped as Lillian tries to cut him out of the mass. A booming voice echoes over the field.

“Begone invader!” The voice sounds like... the Father. I watch Jake look on in horror as Grant and Lillian are drag into a black void. Jake runs toward them trying to get to them before the void closes. As he reaches them, the void closes leaving only Jake in the field. He looks around with an angry expression on his face.

“I can’t lose you guys too.” I notice the area around him start to get darker as it looks like he is controlling it. I feel someone touch my back causing me to turn around.

“Ash... You zoned out again.” I see that I am in the park again. My head stops swimming as I look at James. He looks at me somewhat concerned. “... Did you have another vision?”

“He... knew them.” James makes a face at that.

“Knew who?” I look at the statue.

“Those things that attacked the town. Their names were Grant and Lillian. I saw all three of them fighting a weird creature. After they killed it, they got dragged into some void.” I frown holding my head stressed out. “If I only knew more information...” I pause getting an idea. “Let’s go. If you see a library let me know.” We start searching high and low for any information on a library. We stumble by a group of men that look like they are on break from construction. It is about mid-day now, so the sun is slightly hot. I walk over to the men. “Um... Does anyone know where the library is at?” A few of the men chuckle as one points down the street.

“Take a left at the stocks and you should see it.” I smile happily dragging James with me. We practically run to the library nothing stopping us. Once we finally find it, I jump for joy going to the door. James stops me making him look at him.

“Ash. You need to calm down. We don’t want to bring any more attention to ourselves.” I take a breath trying to relax.

“Sorry. I am just excited that I am able to actually help with something.” We enter the library exposed to thousands upon thousands of books. I am blown back about how many books there actually are within the place. Walking in I can just get the sense of hundreds of stories waiting to be read. An old woman sits behind a desk looking at books. We walk to her as she looks up from the current book she is working on. “Hello. Is there any books on any battles or significant deaths? Also, any books on the gods?” James gives me a look as the old woman places a few books on a nearby cart.

“All those materials have been banned by the military ever since Lord Lionheart declared the Church of the Brothers the reason for the monster attacks.” Disappointment fills my face as the woman points to the left. “However, I don’t work for the military. The books are a few rows down to the left. Look in sections 4-C and 5-F.” I get excited again heading over to the sections. I have James carry a stack of books from the 4-C section. While I carry only a few books on the gods. I start to pour through the pages of the books trying to find anything that can help us. After finishing one of the last books, I set it aside disappointed.

“Nothing.” James comes back reading a fairy tale book. “..and you aren’t helping.” He rolls his eyes shutting his book.

“You knew this was a long shot. Plus, I got bored.” He places the book down on the table. I look at the book causing a faint memory in the back of my head to raise.

“The Forgotten One? Where have I heard that before?” He opens it back up.

“You’ve heard of this book before? It’s pretty messed up.” I shake my head rubbing my head trying to remember.

“No. I heard someone say that one before.” I look at him sighing. ”What’s it about?”

“This man was born with power, money, fame, everything any one could ever want. However, he was wanted more. He went around being a hero for a time gaining more fame and money. It got to the point he was one of the strongest humans in the world. Once he had this, he still wasn’t happy. He wanted to be one of the gods. It didn’t end well for him. The man was stripped of all his wealth, fame, and power by the gods.”

“.. Not a good story huh?” He frowns slightly.

“He grew furious with them. He spent years looking for a way to get back at the gods. Somehow, he found dark evil magic. He opened a void allowing something to come through.” A void. A thought runs through my head as James finishes his story. “Whatever came through was defeated by the gods. The man was thrown into the void for his punishment. This story is an understand that the gods do the things do because they know what lays in the void.” I realize something looking at James.

“A void.. Grant and Lillian. I think I know...” We hear the front door get slammed shut. We both pop our heads out into the pathway seeing Zona stomping toward us. Lupa walks behind her looking a little worried.

“Do you have any idea how long we spent looking for you?” I stand finally connecting the pieces together.

“I think I know what they are and how to defeat them!” Zona, Lupa, and James look at me confused. I take a breath trying to calm my nerves. “Alright. I know that they are from a different place and a god needs to kill them.” Zona looks at me somewhat cautiously.

“That exactly doesn’t help us Ashley.” I look at her confused. I point to Lupa.

“We have a god.” Zona makes a face crossing her arms.

“We don’t know what they want, where they are, what purpose they are here.” I go to answer but stop realizing that she is right. I look down defeated as James places his hand on my back. “It’s a good start Ashley. It’s late now. Lupa got us a room down at the inn. Please head that way soon.” Zona heads to the door. I look up at Lupa.

“It’s okay Ashley. I know that you will be able to do it.” She follows Zona to the door. I look at James who thinks for a second. He gets a smile on his face causing me to give a funny look.

“What are you thinking?”

“I am going to get in a fight."
