Vol 1 Chapter 6: The Call of Death

‘Well, this changes everything.’ Abraham thought as a sense of hunger began filling his stomach. 'Weird I wasn't this hungry before. Perhaps a side effect of using that bow?'

Abraham thought, while looking at the broken bow in his hands. His expression turned stiff as he got lost in thought. ‘I'm guessing the rest of the weapons will have the same effects... and a cost. Guess I wouldn't be having it as easy as I thought.'

He heaved a deep sigh as he began walking back to the wooden shed. He took a glance at the destroyed part of the beach not too far away from him. ‘Thank god I maintained enough distance or I would have been crushed to death before I could even know what happened... either way I guess this confirms it. That thing cannot see!’

Abraham’s expression turned into that of pure relief as he lowered his head and steadily entered the shed. He looked back at the monster once more and shut the door quietly. Making sure he does not make the slightest noise. 'Now then... as for my next course of actions I should probably enter that forest. For the off chance I may find a way out. After all, I'm not sure what attracted that monster but the one thing I'm sure of is that it's trying to surround this place. If I don't leave, I will die.'

Just as Abraham thought of this, he had a sudden realisation.

‘That feeling… It’s not there… Could it be?’

He had a sudden surge of euphoria. He felt he had been released from bounds that had been tying him down for years—ever since he was born, in fact.

But sadly for him, that was not the case. ‘No… I shouldn’t hurry on deciding that. That insane feeling of constantly being watched arrives right before an important event happens in my life—which in my previous world has always been terrible. Perhaps this event was just not that important. It’s… It’s too early for me to celebrate.’

Throughout Abraham's whole life, he, not even once, had been able to keep anything he liked. As soon as he would find happiness, it would immediately be taken from him, always accompanied by a feeling of being watched. As if… someone was watching him as everything went wrong in his life.

This feeling served as an omen for him. An omen suggesting something extremely terrible is about to occur.

'Well I guess this means I will live for a while longer. Or... is it the other way around?

Abraham began moving over to the pile of armour that he had neatly arranged in a corner of the shed as he calmed himself down. ‘If I make it out alive… I will definitely find a way to get rid off whatever it is that is messing with me. No matter what it costs.’

Abraham glanced all over them before turning back in disappointment. ‘As much as I want to try these… I’m too weak. Currently, they will act as nothing but a burden. I’d much rather keep my mobility for now…’

Abraham reached over to the weapon stockpile and took out a bow from it. The bow was made from the same dark metallic material as the other bow. However, this one had some strange crimson beads embedded throughout the bow instead of the spikes. ‘What should I do next?’

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

Abraham walked out of the shed after having replaced his bow. Each step he walked felt a lot harder to make from the weight of the weapons he was carrying. But that wasn’t the only thing affecting him.

The shot he had fired from the bow previously had consumed most of his energy and now he had begun feeling extremely hungry. 'I really need something to eat.'

Abraham began looking around to spot anything that looked at least a little edible. But everything around him was far from that. ‘Ah yes, the only things I can see are crimson fruits that look like they will 100% kill me if I eat them and rotted, black, lifeless greenery and trees. Truly a marvelous feast!’

Abraham’s face turned into a frown. He felt extremely annoyed but decided to swallow his annoyance. Taking one last glance towards the tentacles, Abraham drew his sword. He slowly walked towards a tree on the edge of the place where the deep forest began and hit it with all his strength.

‘Holy… so sharp!’ Amused, he looked towards the tree, which was now cut in half falling on the ground, creating a loud thump. As soon as he heard that, he immediately ran away in the opposite direction. He shot a glance towards the tentacles.

‘Perhaps... could I kill that thing?’ But he quickly dismissed such a thought. The fact that he was alive was a miracle in itself. ‘I shouldn’t take unnecessary risks...’nThinking so, he continued running.

He ran with every ounce of strength he had left. His legs began hurting, but he couldn’t care less. He did not stop until he had made at least 30 metre distance between him and the tree.

‘The tentacles have limitations to their hearing!’ He thought while glancing towards the tentacles in the sea. He heaved a sigh of relief. The tentacles had not moved from their position one bit. ‘Well, at least I think they do. It’s an entirely separate matter if they simply cannot be bothered by me anymore… after all, I doubt I will give it enough energy for even one of its tentacles. Let alone whatever lies below the water.’

A frown farmed on his face. He watched the tentacles as they continue growing in number and slowly surrounding more of what he supposedly considered an ‘island’

‘Man… I sure do hope this is a seashore of some continent and not an island. If it is, then I’m quite screwed.’ He sheathed back his sword back into his scabbard and looked over to the dense forest not far from him.

‘I guess it's time.’

‘Damn, this place is dense!’ Abraham cursed inwardly. The deeper he got into the forest, the more dense it would end up becoming. The black bushes and leaves that grew were sharp to the point where even a slight touch would leave a scratch on him. The forest was extremely dark as well, with the only source of light being the little rays that sometimes peeked through the dense leaves of the large trees.

The trees themselves kept growing in size the further he went in. Now, they looked to be as tall as a three story building. Their leaves were so dense to the point where most of the sky was covered with them, except for a few areas that let in the sinister crimson rays of light. It all looked extremely ominous and unsettling.

But this did not stop Abraham, as he was determined to get out of this place. ‘Now that I think about it, the trees did not look this big from the outside. Oh, well. Whatever.’

A strange sense of slight dizziness filled his mind. Scratches covered his entire body. He held his sword in his hands and cut through the vegetation in his way. ‘This sword sure is sharp. Just a slight swing and even a big tree is cut in half. And, best of all, it doesn’t break like the bow earlier! Although I wonder what the side effect is....'

Abraham kept moving forward.

Some time had passed. He had gotten even more hungry than before. But it was still manageable. It was not his main point of concern.

He had begun feeling a mind-boggling feeling of impending doom. He felt as if, if he went any deeper in, he would die. But at the same time, he felt a strange need to continue forward. ‘Wait… why did I even enter this place in the first place? Ah right to find a way to escape.’

As if… something was calling him from beyond this darkness.
