Light and Shadow in City Sven-1 [Chapter 9]

An unexpected order summoned the LEGATUS to a meeting with Leppart on the outskirts of Yersi-City. Reckless, Ziggy, Whisper Wind, and BJ had to leave City Sven-1 for a few hours. Although they understood the risk of leaving the city without their presence, they trusted the remaining Elementals to handle any situation that might arise.

BJ, always intuitive, couldn’t help but voice his concern. Something deep within him felt off, like a foreboding he couldn’t shake.

– Are you sure all of us need to leave?– he asked, crossing his arms as he looked at Reckless.

The LEGATUS of earth met his gaze with his usual sternness, his voice firm and unyielding.

– If we can’t trust them, they’ll never be of any use – Reckless said bluntly. – We can’t shoulder everything ourselves. The CENTURIOS are next in line to become LEGATUS if we fall in battle. They need to face challenges bigger than themselves.

BJ knew Reckless was right, but the unease in his chest remained. With nothing more to say, he nodded silently and prepared to leave, entrusting the protection of City Sven-1 to the CENTURIOS, DESTURIOS, and VENATORS who stayed behind.

Among the Elementals in the city, Max stood out as the natural leader. As the strongest CENTURIO present, he took responsibility for overseeing the city’s safety. Experienced and reliable, Max was a warrior in whom even the LEGATUS placed their trust. His strength and judgment marked him as the next heir to the rank of LEGATUS of water, a transition BJ had quietly prepared for.

During the morning, as the streets of City Sven-1 bustled with their usual activity, Max didn’t expect major disruptions. Yet, like BJ, he felt a faint, strange unease within himself. Something in the atmosphere was off.

Standing atop one of the city’s rare tall towers, Max closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Suddenly, a grimace of disgust crossed his face.

– This isn’t normal… – he muttered, his brow furrowing as he inhaled again. There was a stench in the air.

– It smells worse than garbage… – he said, his voice laced with concern. – It smells like poison… and… death?

The unease in his chest intensified. Though he couldn’t be certain, something within him seemed to know exactly what it was. Wasting no time, he activated his communicator to alert the other Elementals in the city.

– Attention, everyone – he said, his tone grave and commanding. – Something’s not right. Stay alert and be prepared. This isn’t just intuition…

As Max’s instructions echoed through the Elementals’ communicators, the atmosphere in City Sven-1 seemed to shift. The hum of the streets quieted, and a sense of anticipation, like the calm before a storm, enveloped the city.

Deff, who had been joking with Jazz in a corner of the market, felt a chill run down his spine.

– Do you feel that? – Jazz asked, her dark eyes searching his.

He nodded slowly, placing a hand on the hilt of his sword.

– Yeah. Something’s coming…

Elsewhere, Saico was training alone in one of the city’s abandoned parks. He’d been perfecting the moves Deff had taught him, but the strange heaviness in the air made him pause. He turned his head toward the horizon, to the city’s edge, where the shadows seemed to shift unnaturally.

– This isn’t good… – he whispered, clenching his fists.

Despite the city’s apparent calm, the Elementals knew something dark was lurking. The peace they had enjoyed was about to be shattered.
