Chapter 18 - Moonless Sonata - The Unforgettables: A ZeroYear litRPG

Vaud and Mosh were so thrilled with the organization of years of astronomical observations that they dived into data analysis before checking the devices that had been left running alone for years. Silas took charge of getting everything working again, while Petra woke up early, concerned about Liora, and went to the bridge to find the copy managing the ship.

"Good morning! How is Liora? She didn't look well yesterday." Petra asked, relieved to see the copy managing the ship as usual.

"Hello, Petra! Did you fall out of bed? Liora is fine; she put energy cells in her body like Silas did, but in the case of oioi, we can burn energy in our structures to try to mitigate damage. It doesn't work as well as it looks. Anyway, now she’s replacing some parts, and in a moment, she'll be brand new!" while the copy was talking, Petra noticed an audio channel open with Silas giving voice commands.

"Did Silas wake up too?" Petra asked. "I'm anxious to know what we'll do now, and I would also like to test one of the magics I’ve been learning for a long time."

"Silas didn't even sleep. None of the three in the observatory closed their eyes last night. They're interpreting and cataloging data from a few years back, and Silas is helping with the analysis. It looks like the two researchers didn’t have time to convert the research data into a universal format or document anything. I'm actually helping Silas solve that pickle more than taking care of the ship," the copy said, strangely grumbling less than usual, almost happy about something.

"They must have found something exciting; Silas seems very happy after a long night, " Petra said, getting quite curious.

"Well, they should be talking about what they found out in a boring way this morning. I like to see things with my eyes. I've been putting together the visual data from the so-called fold telescopes. If you want, I can show you what I've assembled so far of the puzzle!" the copy smiled in response to Petra, who responded with a nod.

The interior lights of the bridge shut off, and all the monitors were turned on, transforming the room into a dome cinema. The copy said, "Well, I've assembled what we will see in the Gate sky in a few years when the light of all this reaches us!"

Petra, already accustomed to the near-complete darkness, was about to comment on anything when she was interrupted by an explosion of lights and colors. First, Petra saw the dark sky through the bridge monitors, as always, then an inundation of red lights in ethereal currents, like colossal auroras borealis, floods the entire firmament, like currents of celestial rivers. Darkness gives way to various shades of a deep red. Some points of brighter light become orange, yellow, and even white. It is possible to see a half-dozen flashes of light pulsating with white lights, almost blinding, similar to strobe lights in a disco, and the entire sky doesn't stop moving and pulsing. Petra forgets for a moment about her magic spells and asks, "But what is this?"

"I don't know. The sky is going to be like this in a few years. Maybe Liora can explain it better. I heard the name of things. The darker red is the scorching background radiation, the lighter-red waves of light are the first concentrations of gas closer to Gate, and the farther ones move more slowly behind it. That’s why everything seems to move at the same time. The blinking white dots are massive protostars in formation. There are still no names for those little, super shiny blinking dots. They said that they oscillate without reaching equilibrium because of a lot of mass arriving near them, and those light spots probably will not last long; what a shame, they are so beautiful.” The copy attempts to explain.

“Holy Cow!” Frank exclaims, having just woken up. He is still holding his milk mug as he enters the bridge transformed into a disco.

“So, Gate’s sky will be like this in a few years, apparently." Petra comments.

The three stayed for a good while observing the monitors covering all the walls and the ceiling. Frank asked, not quite believing what he saw, “Is this some kind of simulation generated by a computer?”

"No computer did any of this. I just put together some of the more colorful videos of the fold telescope that they've been broadcasting this night. I have about two hours of it already ready," the copy explains.

"Fascinating! Is Silas still down there? We should go down and talk to them!" suggests Frank, finishing his milk.

"Liora is going, too. Meet her in the aircar," the copy says, grumbling again. “I will keep trying to trick the Golems by staying distant with the ship and the little cursed red stone."

"The little stone that I got in Northern Valley? I hardly remember it.” Petra comments.

“It’s been inside a probe since it reacted abruptly to that schrogae zombie, but since then, nothing else happened. Several sensors keep monitoring it in real time. Well, Liora is already in the aircar waiting for you." the copy warns.

"She's already ready? Ok, we're on our way!" Petra responds, leaving the bridge with Frank.

Arriving at the car, everyone realizes that Liora is visibly different. She’s greener. "So? Let’s go?" she asks, in a good mood.

"I see that this ship’s spa did a lot for you, Liora. A new look?” Frank asks.

“Ah, yes, this ship has everything you need to make an oioi happy!” Liora smiles back. “But part of my external devices were all crumpled up, and I ended up swapping for older versions. Don’t worry. It only changes my look a little bit, like these nailia arms here. See how funny!” Liora shakes her new long arms clumsily, now thin and delicate. They’re so big that they almost drag on the ground.

“I'm seeing. I noticed that your skin and hair are greener, but the Nailia in the photos were kind of pale.” Frank observes, shaking his head as he and Petra get into the backseat of the aircar.

"Nailia have several skin and hair colors. The most common are shades of white and brown, and the rarest are green and blue. I have 3 or 4 versions of green Nailia hair. The one I'm wearing now has a much more metallic shade than the last one.” Liora responds as she departs with the aircar towards the observatory.

"Are you sure you can use these arms, right, Liora?" Petra asks.

"Of course! ” Liora says, smiling, making the aircar hover in suspense to finish the movement in a loop. "These parts bring back good memories of my student days.”

Frank laughs while Petra holds onto the seat. “Maybe it’s not memories from your childhood but that you’ve forgotten to tighten some of your screws.“ Petra says to Liora, ironically pointing at her head.

"In the current situation with our training, if the aircar fell, we’d break the ground!” Frank says with conviction.

“Probably…” Petra gets lost in her thoughts, remembering the day’s affairs, "But now that you brought that up, we’re on our way to an astronomy class, but it would be good to stay a while here on this mountain. If we go hard on training, our ship won’t last.”

“That's true. On the other hand, we can't stay here too long, either. Maybe the idea of stopping from time to time is the solution." Liora comments.

“Wait! We can’t forget about the spells that Petra’s learning; she's been training intensively these last few days.” Frank remembers.

“Yeah. And I even made these." Petra takes three colorful little stones out of her pockets. "I made these a few days ago, following the Vabala manual. I haven’t even tested it yet. The magic is much more complex than I imagined. I don't want to get stuck in another universe just because I did something wrong.”

“Wise decision!” Liora concludes as she parks the aircar next to the observatory. “We've arrived, folks!" The observation tower's door is completely open. From inside the tower, there are only the sounds of machines operating. Next to the observatory, at some distance, two guards stand with their arms crossed next to the King's metal gate. They observe with curiosity what is happening with their newly reconnected former neighbors.

Frank looked at Petra´s little stones with a mix of curiosity and lack of faith but asked nothing now. He jumped out of the car and headed inside the observatory, quickly speaking at full volume as no one was near the open door: "Good morning, folks! We've arrived! We're going in!”

Silas responded via comlink, “You can come in. I’m still on the top floor fixing the space warper. Take the spiral stairs close to the interior walls and ignore the mess.”

When the three entered the observatory, they found a tangle of massive instruments occupying almost all the space. They took care to push things aside, opening a passage without breaking anything. Liora observed the instruments with a mixture of strangeness and surprise. When Frank and Petra's curiosity gaze turned to her, Liora said, “I have no idea!” And the three continued to climb the stairs.

There are five floors in total, with an internal ceiling height of at least 30 feet each. The upper floors are even more crowded with stuff. These things are clustered in the central area, leaving the stairs slightly more accessible. They are covered with dust that indicates that they were left there for many years.

The top floor is different. The ceiling is entirely transparent, and there is a set of telescopes and lenses, as well as a central device that Silas literally has to get inside to repair. Vaud and Mosh are standing next to a small table full of maps and terminals. They are having black coffee and heatedly discussing something with each other. Behind them, there are scribbled whiteboards and four small shelter cubes thrown in a corner with downright messy beds. Two of these beds are thrown together to form a larger bed. Liora, observing this, telepathically comments, "Silas, you could have gone to sleep in the ship.” Silas replies, “They were frantic with their hypotheses, and I preferred to stay with them. We didn´t even take a nap. They're still in a mess with the data. It’s not every day you can observe a universe emerging.”

When Vaud notices everyone's arrival, he says at a relatively fast pace, already dragging an enormous monitor to serve as an exhibition board. "Hello, folks! I'll put you in the loop of our results. Mosh and I have some differences of interpretation. But we’ll begin without beating around the bush.”

Mosh is standing with his arms crossed, making a face and shaking his head. There are few places to sit in this room, so everyone is standing except for Silas, who is inside the machinery observing everything while he works.

Vaud speaks hurriedly, also changing to the suma language sometimes: “It will be great to consolidate our points now. Well, let's start from the beginning. You should have noticed that since year 9611, the red background luminosity of Gate has visibly been increasing at an exponential rate."

Liora replies: “Actually, I noticed it some time ago while outside the ship. But I thought it was within the margins of error or an atmospheric change as we were getting far from the Metropolis area.”

Vaud continues, “Nop! This is already the effect of the Big Bang, and the rate at which the background luminosity increases per time unit is going to go up until a maximum point about two years from now. The luminosity will continue to increase for at least another 10 thousand years, but its second derivative with respect to time will decrease. At the point where it's maximum, it'll be the peak of the Big Bang. We'll be the only civilization ever to observe such a marvel, I suppose!”

Mosh interrupts, “Everything my colleague said is going to happen, except for the fact that he insists on calling it all the Big Bang.”

Vaud glances sideways at Mosh, puffing out his cheeks, while Mosh contains himself and makes a hand signal for him to continue, with his hand still crossed. Vaud takes back the word, “The Big Bang occurred from a spherical surface space with a radius of almost 10 thousand light-years, forming a bubble. That's why when we look at the sky now, we still see the ancient constellations; we are inside this bubble the whole time, still receiving information about the past universe before the Big Bang. The current old galaxies will be pushed beyond our observable universe when we start to perceive the effects of the expanded space."

Mosh can contain himself no more, "But there was no real explosion. The energy reaching our warping lenses is immense, but it is almost all luminous, with only a small fraction of extremely heated particles. The magnetic field and gravitational distortion of Gate will be more than enough to protect all of us from those things!”

Vaud: “But I never said the Big Bang would be dangerous to us, just that it’s an explosion of space that pushes everything away almost immediately.”

Mosh: “Well, according to your hypothesis, the few old galaxies will be pushed out of our observable universe. In a few millennia, we will be able to test if this is really true. But I think that, unfortunately, you won't find anything because, in my hypothesis, the entire old universe will cease to exist because time will no longer flow through there. The existence of the new universe is infinite, as it always has been with all universes, and the expansion is apparent because light and other forms of radiation take time to reach us. Particularly, background radiation is going to be pretty interesting to observe in the young universe!”

Via telepathy, Silas tries to help, “Vaud thinks that the Big Bang just creates space, pushing the old out, and Mosh thinks there is a rupture in the space timeline, effectively erasing the old from existence." Petra: “But when I look at the sky now, I still see the red dots that are ancient agonizing galaxies very far away, right?” Liora: “Right, but that's the imagery of the past. According to Mosh, they no longer exist, and according to Vaud they do, but their information is lost unless it’s accessed by space fold telescopes,” and Silas adds: “In any case, a space folding telescope that could target through a whole universe would need much more power than this one here, which is already absurdly powerful, and hunting anything at that distance with a small fold cone is almost impossible.”

Vaud continues, utterly unaware of the group's shared thoughts: "As for background radiation, my colleague is right. It’s going to be a night show for years and years! But we’ll find out that he’s talking nonsense about the ancient distant galaxies disappearing in time."

Mosh responds excitedly: “Maybe in a parallel universe without Gate, things work more like Vaud says. Our ancestral colleagues here next door came from the universe that just ceased to exist in time—probably from the same planet as the Nîs but in a prehistoric time, long forgotten by everyone. If Vaud's hypothesis were right, those guys would be people much like us, but no! They are shards from the U-9, and that´s because their home galaxy exists no more, not because it is just far away from us somewhere.”

Vaud adds, "Certain things are the same throughout the multiverse. The Big Bang that we observed in Gate had the same impact everywhere. What was bizarre is that something occurred from U-8 to U-9, which explains why we're here alive witnessing these marvels! Maybe that explains why those shards from U-9 are here, because there are some Nîs that are no shards and are people just like us, and they came from the same place but from a different time; we need more information about this before jumping to conclusions.”

Silas, in a mental note, “U-8 and U-9 are how they call the number of layers of the Underworld in Gate. We are in the tenth universe after this Big Bang, which means that we have nine layers inside the primordial monolith, so U-9 refers to our Underworld with nine layers, and U-8 to the Underworld before the Big Bang, and there is also a copy of the U-8 inside the U-9, as there is one Underworld for each past multiverse as well.”

Mosh responds more calmly, "Well, I agree with my colleague that we are living inside a singular bubble right now, a providential space-time bubble that could be the making of someone, I suppose. I agree that some things should be similar in all corners of the multiverse, but I'm afraid I have to disagree with the Big Bang and that implied space-time continuity in all the universes of the same multiverse. I also can't entirely agree with a pretentious continuity between different multiverses. The event that occurred 10 millennia ago made an infinite space-time rupture. If we get into a space folding ship now and if it is possible to pass the edge of the bubble, we're going to fall into a known universe with a radius of around 10 thousand light Gate-years plus the inflation, not into another universe with information of the last multiverse, if this universe we are living right now is infinite as I suppose we unlikely meet any empty space bubble, but even if it is finite and we found a real matter border and beyond that there is empty space, there will be no information about U-8 there, everything in the last multiverse is gone, except the light information what was inside that singular bubble we are living.”

Vaud adds: "Finding a real matter border only implies that U-8 and the other old universes don't have their cadavers of matter scattered across the same observable space, but beyond the matter horizon of U-9, there is no reason for those cadavers cease to exist."

Mosh replies, again more animated, “I disagree! I could think twice about my statements if we really find a matter border, but I think we will never find such things. I think that the old universe cadavers of matter are gone forever, not exactly destroyed, but time just ceases to flow for them. Let us consider this: in addition to having data beyond Gate’s observable universe with our space-folding telescopes, we've always found continuity within all the observable universes no matter how we reach them. The size of every observable universe is identical to ours at the same point in time but shifted in position. If my colleague’s hypothesis were true, by jumping to an observable universe near a supposed matter edge, the observable universe on the edge of matter would be heterogeneous. This is not the case. It's never been the case in any place that we've tested. Be it the original Earth, in Seneca, where you came from, or any planet from any species that ever stepped into Gate, they are all homogeneous. Also, if that were the case of a Big Bang - as you like to call it, when we calculate the displacement vectors of many objects in any observable universe, we would likely find a bias in the same direction as the original center of mass of the universe, given that in your hypothesis, every universe has finite mass cluster, defined by those supposed matter borders, and, because of that, it would always have a center of mass.”

Silas mentally comments, “They’ve been stuck in some variations of that discussion all night. It´s like music playing the same theme again and again. No matter how many times I hear that, I still have some trouble perceiving some of what they're discussing, but it seems that for Mosh, we live inside one among several infinite universes, all of them composing a multiverse. At the same time, for Vaud, there’s just a single space, and there’s only a division of information between them. This division of information forms a cluster, which is called a universe; the collection of such clusters forms a multiverse, and matter interaction is finite within each cluster.”

Vaud replies over Mosh, “As for the displacement vector not being detected, that’s a non sequitur to refute the Big Bang. It's at least insufficient. In the case of always finding spherical homogeneous observable universes, that’s explained by the locality bias of the Umbra, which explains how people pass through the world of the dead and come to live in Gate after being revived. If there were no locality bias, we'd certainly find species living on the material edges of the universe; maybe our ancient neighbors lived in such a place; maybe that explains why the King´s people are shards after all, while the more recent Nî are people like us.”

Liora mentally: “What the hell is this, Silas?” Silas: “I’m not entirely sure, but as far as I understand, people before being revived here have their reflections in the world of the dead from where the two came from. It's not everyone that passes through the world of the dead. Just those who were once inside Gate's observable universe or connected to that observable universe in some way. In the case of Seneca world, which is a particular universe, that would obviously include Seneca Earth and all of its observable universe. Anything rational that was supposedly outside could never be directly revived in Gate, but it could be found in the Underworld, at least preserved in some form of registry.” Frank: "My head is hurting. Tonight, I’m going to take a quick trip to Rocatrista to decompress." Petra: “I find this fascinating. I confess I’m having trouble understanding all this. I'm better off interrupting Vaud and asking him." Liora: "Yes, good idea. All this is fun. But it’s going to be even more fun using this information to mess up Biggus’s doomsday speech.”

Petra takes advantage of Vaud's pause for questions. "Vaud, Mosh, you have my comlink, and I would like you to send me the material with your hypotheses. I’ll need some time to assimilate these concepts better, but I’d like to know what you guys think is going to happen when Biggus can’t hide the sky from people in a few years.”

Mosh and Vaud look at each other with a smile, remembering in Petra’s words their friendship despite their different opinions. Vaud responds: “Ah yes, you don’t have much time if you want to save people in Seneca. I think things are going to heat up in Metropolis very soon because Biggus is going to react violently, as he always does. We need to pass this information about the Big Bang to all Gate's scientific community to analyze, but without attracting too much attention, to avoid being literally hunted, and that’s before the sky turns into a light show.”

Frank interrupts: “Yeah. We also have other information to pass along, but I don't think it can be done through the same channels. We'll have to find some other alternative. Any personal ideas?" There is a long silence.

Petra finally speaks: "Well, let's think calmly and continue gathering information here. We need to resolve those issues with Seneca soon. Do you think your people can help in some way, Vaud? I mean, could you guys revive our people?"

Vaud lowers his head and replies, "I'm not very proud of the suma mages. If they were paid a true fortune to revive a whole planet, they probably wouldn’t have any objections. But it’s all very complicated with them. Maybe if it were against a common enemy, but even so, it never happened before; they're just too pragmatic.”

Liora comments, "Ah, yes. Always the mages. Why I’m not surprised?”

Frank interrupts, "Wait a minute, Liora. Ramirez thought the same thing, but maybe what happened to Dukliasse in Northern Valley will wake them up to reality."

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Liora looks at Frank and says. “I hope I'm wrong, Frank. It would be great to have a little more peace of mind to take action.”

Mosh, already with open arms, gestures and says, “We’ll try, yes. Silas told me a bit about what happened in the valley, but only now that we’re talking did I realize that this information you have is more important than I initially thought. My mind gets stuck in the stars. Anyway, the mages in our city work in a very different way from Metropolis, and it’s always been that way. I wouldn't plan on relying on their deliberate help. They’ll surely help revive all of you once, according to the contract. But I think it will be complicated to get them to revive more people from Seneca."

Petra seizes the opportunity: “So folks, I was about to ask something about magic, precisely this.” Petra holds out her hand, showing three colored little stones. “I ended up doing this here." Everyone stares at the stones with some curiosity.
