Chapter 15 - It´s As If As Playing With Fire - The Unforgettables: A ZeroYear litRPG

At a bar table on the edges of civilization, four figures lay sprawled in a deplorable state on filthy couches made from what had once been velvet. Half a dozen bottles and a few half-empty glasses lay on the table. A phantom emerged to accompany this unusual, hungover group.

Frank looked around and noticed the surprised bartender looking at him. He was a schrogae nicknamed Tommy because his name translated to other languages, according to himself, would scare customers away.

Frank waved to the bartender with a half smile, looking into his face and simply saying: “Tommy!” The bartender recognized him and returned the smile. Frank noticed that Ramirez was wearing the same purple robe he’d worn when he’d revived him, but this time, it was incredibly cleaner. The magic man was also wearing more metal chains around his neck and wrists. Frank thought, "Ramirez must have gotten a job to revive someone important." To which Petra retorted telepathically, "Only if it’s more important than you. Haven't you noticed anything different about this place yet?"

Frank looked around and noticed over a dozen humans scattered among the tables of the bar. Some were asleep on the floor. The few who were awake didn't take their eyes off Frank, perhaps trying to figure out if the hallucination was the result of the drinks from the previous night. Petra commented, “Are they from our Earth? I don’t recognize any of them. But why the hell does Ramirez bring people back to life in such a place?” Liora: "I was thinking the same when I came here the first time. It was very hard to find a mage to revive you two back then. Biggus made it almost impossible on Metropolis, and even those who are in other cities nearby are very afraid, so maybe this is the way Ramirez finds out to keep a low profile."

Frank realized, from the reflection he saw in the glass of drink he was trying to grasp while telepathically talking to the others, that he was attracting a lot of attention by wearing his white training robe and emanating pale light like a phantom. Then he stood up and spoke softly, in a drawn-out falsetto, but in a way that could be heard, extending his arm toward the magic man in his sleep. “Help us, Ramirez! You're our only hope!" The mage, of course, continued to sleep. But some of the humans, seeing the scene, couldn’t contain their laughter. Petra also laughed and asked, “Maybe you need to make more noise instead of trying to use The Force to wake Ramirez!"

"Let him sleep a little longer. Let’s try to talk to the humans who should be from our time.” Frank looked around, smiling with his head down, and walked toward the group of three humans who were laughing, saying, "Hello, friends! I'm from Corpus Christi, Texas. I got this way after drinking Pik Polum grog!" That sent Tommy into fits of laughter.

“Easy there, friend, the three of us came from the city of Porto, in Portugal! I’m João Pedro, nice to meet you!" said one of them as he moved a chair away so that Frank could sit.

Frank thought fast and replied, "Nice to meet you, Francisco F. B., but Tommy calls me Frank. Isn't your city where they make that robust wine? Tastes like heaven, kicks like a mule! I had some during a snooker showdown right by my turf. But I think it was called Oporto. Am I wrong?”

“Snooker? Frank must have had that wine with the English. They have a different name for our city," interrupted a girl sitting at the table. "Nice to meet you, I’m Maria José. And this is Santiago next to me." The third member of the group, holding his head, only nodded with a half-smile.

“Great. I’ve been an old Ramirez customer. I thought about talking to him, but I ended up arriving late. I'll wait for him to wake up. Did you also get brought back by him?” Frank asked.

"Not by him personally. But by the people who work with him.” João answered as he pointed to the group at the table where Ramirez lay. “Let me ask you, Frank, are you okay? I mean, what’s going on with you?” he asked, unable to contain himself because of Frank’s unusual appearance.

“Oh? I’m perfectly healthy. It’s nothing. It’s just a different way for mages to communicate,” Frank explained.

“Oh, wow! That’s what I was wondering. So, your revived group chose to learn magic. Is it worth to choose this option in Metropolis, then?” Maria asked.

"In my case, it's worth it, but I was revived in a different situation. Explain your situation to me so I don't give you wrong recommendations," Frank responded.

Maria looked at João, and he began speaking. "Well, we applied for the Human Immigrant process in Metropolis for groups of up to four people. Smaller groups have priority. In groups of three like ours, the process is taking months. They say it used to be faster. In total, we will receive 900 credits to make a life for ourselves here in this world. Of those, 150 would go to pay Ramirez, leaving 250 for each of us three. After that, in Metropolis, at the end of the immigration process, we can choose to pay 100 credits to learn a magic school or spend the same to live in a permanent cube-house subsidized by the Human District Association, leaving us with 150 credits each, but not both. We were inclined to choose the cube, like most people, but it seems that Frank chose differently.”

"Yes, in our case, they paid to revive us, and we didn't end up going to Metropolis. Is the Human Immigrant process working well?” Frank asked as his mind was flooded with thoughts from his friends through telepathy.

Liora said, “Frank, Biggus restricted this process with quotas. It was among the first measures he took after his inauguration. I don't know how these people managed to get this done?” Petra said at the same time, “Smart move. Ramirez is making a lot of money off this.”

Maria took over. “Right, they say that the president of Metropolis doesn't like humans. Ramirez made us an offer himself. We apply on the Human District and leave the money set aside to postpone the choice. Then we all go back to Rocatrista to work as mages here while we wait for a couple of years to see if the political situation in Metropolis is resolved. They say that everything used to be a lot easier because the city subsidized it. Now, it’s the district organizations that do everything."

Frank was impressed and asked: "But, Maria, does Biggus allow new humans into Metropolis? Did he just cut municipal subsidies?"

"Curious question, Frank,” Maria said excitedly. “I've been studying the laws of this place for over a month. When Metropolis was founded, there was a law guaranteeing that all humans and other revived founders had the right to live there, as this was a premise during the constitution of the city itself. After more species appeared in Gate, this law was expanded to everyone in the Old Metropolis, and it continued like that in the New Metropolis until Biggus managed to revoke the expansion of the law, along with the subsidy. But he can't do anything against the city’s founding law. To circumvent that, he established annual quotas. But they’re a joke. The quota is one new human per year for the entire city.”

Frank raised his eyebrows and gave a bitter smile before speaking: "I’m starting to get it. But is it really worth living in Metropolis without a guaranteed legislation?"

Maria replied promptly, "The law exists. The problem is the quotas. The neighborhood associations have found a way to circumvent this by reserving quotas from people who disappeared during the cataclysm and passing them on, but this takes time.”

“How interesting! Let me ask you something. How did you get this information? Because Ramirez didn’t know any of this a few months ago,” Frank asked.

"He didn't know. This is recent information because it was only last month that someone was able to get inside the psynet to find this out. Frank, you can ask Ramirez that when he wakes up,” said Maria after João nudged her with his foot.

At that point, Frank mentally asked everyone, "Psynet, any idea what that is, guys?" But after a long silence, Silas said, "We know what it’s not. If it were magic, Liora would know. And it doesn't look like technology to me, but Gate is really huge."

"Well, Maria, then let me explain my situation better. This ghost form of mine is magic that I learned to communicate with Ramirez. I'm far away dealing with urgent matters and have no other way to communicate. But thank you very much for talking. In the future, I know a few people who might enjoy living a few years in Metropolis." Frank said, getting up from his chair.

Despite João’s nudges, Maria also stood up and showed Frank a card. He couldn't hold it but managed to read it. She said, “This is my contact. I was a lawyer on Earth and intend to offer a service here in Gate as soon as possible. If you can pass my contact on to your acquaintances, I’d appreciate it.”

Frank registered it on his real comlink through the mental interface and said, “It’s noted, Dr. Maria. I’d give you my contact information, but at the moment, I only have access to Phantom Net. But we’ll meet here at the bar many times. I’m going to see if Ramirez is awake. Thank you for the conversation." Frank got up and said goodbye to the others, saying: “João, Santiago, let us talk another day."

Frank went back to sit at Ramirez’s table and tried to find a way to drink from a half-full glass, but he still had a lot to learn about being a ghost. One of Ramirez's colleagues woke up and noticed Frank sitting there. He made a strange face but said nothing. He just rubbed his eyes, and when Frank didn't disappear, he pulled the glass away from him, grumbling, "This stuff’s way too strong!"

Then the others woke up, but it took them a while to notice Frank sitting there. When Ramirez locked eyes with the phantom, he stopped for a moment, stood up, and chirped, "Frank! Long time no see, buddy! I thought you were dead! They told me that those crazy guys took you up north.” Now, he noticed that Frank was translucent and emanating his own light. “Even though you look kinda dead now that I’m getting a better look.”

"It’s magic, Ramirez, communication. I’m still learning,” Frank replied.

“Of course, I know this is magic, but it’s impossible! What do you mean you’re learning? It's been only months since you were here,” Ramirez laughed.

"It’s a new magic method I learned on the way. It’s called the Desperate Mages School, and it’s pretty efficient." Frank also laughed. "But seriously, I just started learning this two weeks ago, and I had to try it a bunch of times until I could get it right."

"Okay, so you’ve chosen to learn the Communication School in Metropolis. You’re a smart guy! But what are you doing here? Decided to spend some quality time with old friends from Rocatrista?" the magic man asked.

“Actually, that’s exactly what I came here to talk to you about," Frank said as he saw Ramirez sit at the table while his friends said goodbye and headed out of the bar. Frank said goodbye to them and then continued speaking more softly. “Ramirez, we really went north. We almost died several times. And now, we're running from a real phantom that we encountered in Northern Valley, headed to God Knows Where."

Ramirez frowned. "You must be out of your damn mind. Hardly anyone comes back breathing from that hellhole. If anyone from here’s unlucky enough to work the road, they don’t go near that valley. Only the rats scrape by down there, if even that."

Frank continued. “Yeah, we discovered that the hard way. The people who lived in the valley are all dead, and something is preventing them from being revived. We managed to escape by the skin of our teeth, but we couldn’t return to the south. The phantom in the valley killed everyone who tried to reach that place. And this was more than 7,000 years ago.”

Ramirez looked more serious, staring upwards as if he were remembering something. “You’re in trouble, buddy. I lost a few good friends in that cursed place. But it’s been a long time. How did you manage to escape? They even sent a douchebag archmage from Metropolis there, and he never came back.”

Frank sank into the chair and said, "Yeah, that douchebag also ended up with the same fate as the others. We managed to find out a little bit about what happened, and we were very lucky to escape, but things aren’t good now. The phantom is trapped in the valley, but she’s sent Golems after us, and they can easily destroy us. And there's a trap that prevents anyone from going back south after passing a point along the way. So, that's why I’m using this to communicate.”

“Right, but who taught you magic? Did you encounter any wizard on your way?” Ramirez asked.

"Not exactly. We found mages that the phantom had killed, and I’m learning on my own with the things we found from them,” Frank responded.

Ramirez glanced at him. “Since when has anyone learned magic by reading the gibberish that mages write?"

Frank tried to explain. “Stardust said that’s called a didactic monolith, dude. I put my finger on them to make a little sound and follow the manual. The rest is trial and error.”

Ramirez, the great expert in half-truths, says, "Sure, and I put my little finger in Santa's sack every year to learn new magics!”

Frank, no longer finding any excuses, spoke all at once. “Shit, Ramirez, it’s true. We found an open Vabala, and we’re trying to use it in desperation."

Ramirez paused to process the information. "An open Vabala? That wasn’t common even in the Old Metropolis! What the hell was one of those doing out in the middle of nowhere?"

Frank, now more animated: “Exactly, Ramirez. It’s not in the middle of nowhere! It was supposed to be a city the size of Metropolis. You could help us understand what happened and how that phantom showed up.”

“Well, son, if that Vabala is the real deal, we’ll find a way to get you all there because, with it, we can solve Rocatrista's problem forever,” Ramirez concluded.

“You and what army, Ramirez? Are you listening to what I’m saying? That phantom ate an archmage for breakfast! After we use it, we'll send the Vabala to you. I don't give a damn about the Vabala or the money now. But I would really love to get out of this alive.”

"I'm always concerned about the money part. But it’s not just that, Frank. You saw Rocatrista’s conditions yourself. This can change the game for everyone here,” Ramirez responded, realizing that Frank was serious.

“But why is the Vabala so important? Isn’t it simpler to teach magic? Or to send people to Metropolis to learn?” Frank asked.

“Only if that was back in the old days when anyone could enter the houses of the Academy. Today, Metropolis politics controls the economy with restricted knowledge and scarce resources. I've had several apprentices over the years. Half a dozen of them remain today, and most of those who are still active you saw a little while ago here at the table,” Ramirez commented.

"Ah, I see. If I managed to learn magic in a few weeks just with the Vabala, I imagine it’s possible to teach many more people in an appropriate environment.” Frank reflected.

“Exactly. Today, if someone has learned anything in Metropolis, they can’t teach it, work with it, or market it to any city in the northern region. So, of the people we’re reviving here, once the process is finished, they may have problems if they want to go back to Rocatrista.” Ramirez said, to everyone’s surprise.

Frank mentally asked: “Liora, Silas, is this what Ramirez is saying an exaggeration, right?” Liora: ”Yeah, but it’s not totally untrue. If we’d finished our engineering courses, it would have been much more challenging to leave. Even though nobody paid attention to students, we ended up changing our names when we arrived in the region just to be sure." Silas: "The decisions we made in a hurry because we were afraid maybe weren’t the best. Let's take it easy. Ramirez’s idea of socializing the Vabala is great, but it needs to be done with caution. If Biggus’s people find out about it, it’ll be a problem.” Petra: "Although it's a bar at the end of the world, be careful what you and Ramirez are talking about. The bar is not empty, and most people have a price."

"Okay, Ramirez. I see you've made some connections in Metropolis, and you have a reasonable way to obtain information. But we have to be careful with the Vabala. There's something else we found in the valley that I think will be even more interesting,” Frank said, turning his head to look around to see who else was still at the bar and realizing only Tommy and the Porto group were left.

"What a great haul! I'm even regretting that I was afraid to go to the valley myself after all these years. What exactly did you steal this time that's worth more than an open Vabala?" Ramirez laughed.

Frank responded immediately: ”Ramirez, your mercantile mindset is going to be your downfall! We’re trying to stay alive! We haven't stolen a single thing. Is it really so difficult to put it in your head that we have much more important information than anything else? I didn't come here to sell you the Vabala. I came here to pass on what we’ve discovered because, on our journey, we could die at any moment and lose everything.”

“My mindset is what’s kept me alive in this world until now.” Ramirez cast two spells, which caused his head to glow for a few moments before continuing. He continued in a shallow tone, barely a whisper. “Go ahead and tell me what’s so important now. If someone else is listening, I’ll know, besides your three friends who are obviously listening to our conversation."

Frank, impressed, smiled. "You have to teach me that! But to sum it all up, the dead archmage was named Dukliasse. He was from the same guild and party as Biggus. The archmage went crazy and murdered the Buklises' parents. We have audio recordings of everything from the Northern Valley public system. The Buklise couple, on the other hand, were taken by the phantom. Furthermore, we have over a year of disturbing communications between Dukliasse and the MBSI people from that time.”

Ramirez sat up and unfocused his gaze as if he were remembering something. He said, “I know perfectly well who Olanna is. We studied magic together. So long ago, it seems like another lifetime. She was stubborn as a mule, and we spent years arguing more about politics than magic. But that doesn’t matter now. Can you prove these things you’re telling me?”

“Of course! We have a copy of everything cataloged. And after we resolve the problem with the phantom, anyone can go to the valley and check it out for themselves.” Frank said.

Ramirez pondered for a while and then spoke in an even more serious tone, “You’re right. If Biggus discovers this, we'll all be dead. Things in Metropolis are getting worse. Several parties are still trying to organize a general election, but so far, four opposition leaders have been assassinated with extermination magic. Even though it's obvious who’s behind it, Biggus always manages to come up with an excuse. About the Buklise family, I was there the day the parents were killed, along with more than half of my magic classmates. We'd spent years trying to find out something about Olanna and her wife, who was going to have a child shortly before disappearing."

Frank leaned toward Ramirez. "This information is a double-edged sword. If it’s released now, I don’t doubt that Biggus will try to erase the entire north region from the map.”

Ramirez leaned back in his chair again, restless. "Probably. The situation in Metropolis has been unsustainable for a long time. I think the mages would have the power to kick Biggus's ass if they worked together. But the ego and stubbornness of mages have always spoken louder. However, I think that this type of bomb could mobilize a lot of people.”

Frank paused for a long time to think in silence as he tried, in vain, to lift a glass without success. Finally, he spoke: "Can we trust the people here, Ramirez?”

“Tommy is okay. And your human colleagues are even more trustworthy. I think Maria might even be able to help us a lot. But this information would put them at risk," Ramirez concluded.

Frank stopped trying to lift a glass, which was proving futile, and he said: "Well, Ramirez, I plan to be back here. We won’t use technology to communicate because it's too risky to attract attention in Metropolis.”

“See you around, Frank! Before you leave, thanks for trusting me! Things must be pretty bad for you, right?" Ramirez said as he drank the rest of the glass in front of him as if it were nothing.

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Frank looked at him, bewildered. “We don't even know if we’re still alive…” He shut down the magic, making him disappear from Rocatrista and return to the ship's bar.

Silas said with a concerned look, “Maybe we've taken too big a risk this time. We don’t depend only on ourselves now.”

Liora, sitting in her chair with her arms crossed, commented, "It could be, Silas, but maybe we’ve waited too long, and it’s too late. If nothing changes in Metropolis, the chances for Seneca are nil.”

Petra shrugged. “Well, Ramirez seems to be taking care of his own business, but so far, he’s managed to save a lot more people from Earth than us. Ultimately, contacting him seemed like our best option. Don't you think?"

They all smiled and silently agreed. Frank went to the ship's bar and finally managed to drink something. He said, choked, "This is going to take some time, but I have a feeling it will work out. We’ll sleep on it tonight. Tomorrow’s another day!"
