Chapter 14 - Who Wants to Fly Away? - The Unforgettables: A ZeroYear litRPG
"Okay, everyone. Let's try to understand together how this magic works,” Frank announced, entering the small stage next to the bar. The others grabbed chairs from the cube and sat around.
“Petra and I are going to observe and record all kinds of energy. Maybe that will help,” Liora said, already sitting and with several devices next to her. Petra sat by her side, taking the opportunity to learn more about using the sensors.
“Go for it, Frank!” Silas said, sitting down with a smile, genuinely excited.
“Right, I want to test three things, so let us slow it down. From what I understand, after using my energy, I’ll have to rest for a long time.” Frank prepared on the stage, taking a lectern from the cube and placing the part of the Vabala he was going to use on it. He plucked the Vabala monolith as if tuning a musical instrument, and they could all hear a deep, pleasant sound emanating from the environment around Frank. "First, let's test group telepathy. I’ve already tested on myself last week, and I’m still alive. I thought I'd start with Liora, as her mind must be most different from mine.”
“Wait a minute,” Liora interrupted. "Are we going to share our memories? How does this work?”
Frank promptly responded, “From what I read in the Vabala, it's not that at all, really. This magic is a type of enchantment that every enchanted person can turn off, on, or filter freely. There’s an example in the explanatory text that caught my attention. It draws a parallel with the imported skills with technology that we used a while back. Magic shares all the skills of all enchanted people. And it also works in combination with whatever we have imported via technology."
“What? But how is that possible? If that’s really it, it’ll be excellent!” Liora was impressed and wary, as she had never seen magic work in her favor before.
“Well, from what I read, this magic makes it possible to share our senses as if we were one person. It allows us to talk mentally as if our minds were one. But we completely preserve our individuality and memories. It's as if magic opened a new door to communicate directly inside our minds. And each person decides what passes through that door, in the same way that we decide what we’re going to say,” Frank explained based on what he read but still unsure.
"Right, and what do we need to do to make this work?" Liora asked.
“I have to enchant you, Liora. And to do that, I need to perceive you in person and replicate the steps that I’ve trained. After that, you'll be able to use that mental door to share senses, communicate, or use skills as if they were imported memories. However, there is a limit. It’s not possible to use any of the other's powers," Frank said.
After a few seconds of thinking, Liora stood up and said: "Okay, I’m ready. Let’s get on with it, Frank!”
“Lu…” Frank said. He made a funny face as everyone waited in silence. Petra started to get some readings on the sensors but scratched her head and pointed the sensors at herself without saying anything.
After a few seconds, Liora said: "So, Frank, when are you going to do your magic?"
"I’ve already done it, Liora. I’m trying to talk to you mentally, but it seems like you're blocking everything," Frank suggested.
"I’m not noticing anything different,” Liora said, still very tense.
Petra interrupts: “Okay, everyone. Two things: Frank and Liora have a slight increase in the humidity of the air around them, and the temperature drops a little bit. Frank already had that effect, and now Liora also does. That must be the enchantment. Other than that, the magical energy sensor returns a positive value for Frank and me. This same sensor was zeroed for about ten seconds for Frank only but now returned to the previous level. I imagine this is the mana being used by Frank to do the magic.
”Should I try to think about talking to you, Frank?” Liora said mentally to Frank after getting curious about Petra’s report.
Frank smiled, followed by a few seconds of strange silence.
"1 2 3 testing. Hello, Frank, this is Liora! This crap isn't working!” Liora thought silently.
"Liora, I’m hearing you grumbling that it's not working, but you're blocking all of my replies," Frank said.
"Oh, at least I discovered how to send things!" Liora responded, happy with her progress.
“Frank, stop fooling around and do that magic on me already,” Petra insisted.
"It's not possible, according to the Vabala. I have to rest for eight hours," Frank responded, perplexed.
“And since when have you been tired? We regenerate, Frank. Don't you remember the fine print in the power database side notes Liora sent us when we started training?" Petra taunted.
"I don't remember any of those side notes, Petra," Frank confessed. "But you're right, I've never felt tired."
"Refreshing your empty head, Frank. The regeneration we trained for is physical and mental. The description also says that it's strongly recommended that mages train some regeneration if they plan to use magic in stressful situations," Petra recalled.
“Lu…" Frank said, and then he spoke mentally to Petra. "It's better to have an open, empty mind than a mind locked up like Fort Knox."
"The only one thinking about mind bricks is you! By the way, is Liora listening to all of this, or can we keep cursing each other freely?" Petra smirked, thinking and smiling silently.
“I'm glad that a thick skull like yours is lucky enough to have learned how to use telepathy so quickly. But Liora only listens if I or you put her in the conversation. Look, we can share our senses." said Frank, immediately pausing in astonishment, "Wow! But your vision and hearing are really impressive. It’s like the world is a tuned home theatre,”
“Lucky? Of course, Frank. Let’s see what you have to share. Your vast experience of discussions inside a bar and the ability to get drunk without losing your senses, while I, on the other hand, have military training and shooting…" Petra mused with disdain.
“Never forget, if it weren’t for a bar, we’d still be dead. But let’s get back to serious business and try to bring Silas into the magic. I thought the limit was three people at a time, but I feel like I can add another.” Frank waited for a while in silence while Liora slowly tried to understand the magic before using it.
"Right, Frank, by the way, do you need to speak or make noise to do magic?" Petra asked, refocusing and breaking the silence.
"No, I can just think. The Vabala, in a little note, recommends that the mage try to vocalize the sound during the learning process, but it seems to me that wizards don’t care much about being discreet." Frank concludes.
At that moment, Frank looked at Silas, who was silently waiting for something to happen and only thought of the magic syllable "Lu." without speaking or making any sound. Immediately, they all heard Silas’ voice in their minds.
"This is test number eight. Tok tok, give me a little kiss, two little turns, and then three little jumps. This is test number nine. Tok tok…” Silas sings mentally as if he were trying to speak to them all.
"What the hell is that, Silas?” Frank asked mentally.
"Ah, it’s working now? I was testing with an ebex lullaby. We sing this to children while we hit our bone plates together. I thought of something you'd never know unless I’d told you beforehand." Silas responded mentally.
“Ha ha ha! Brilliant! I really like how your mind works, Silas!” Petra complimented.
"Okay, everyone. I think now I’m reaching my group size limit for this magic. The only thing left is for Liora to learn how to use this," Frank said. Everyone looked at Liora, who was distant and thinking to herself.
“What’s going on? I'm running my test routines to try to configure this power as a communication portal, but it’s not easy.” Liora said in the real world.
“Liora, maybe you should test everything you can do with the magic first, then use a top-down strategy to create a mental interface model for this. I’ll help you program it, but first, you’d need to test it and understand the potential." Silas proposed.
"Okay, I'll try then, Silas," Liora said. And immediately, she thought: "I’m going to try to open a two-way communication now, everyone. Can you hear me?” Liora said mentally.
“Now we can hear you, Liora. You missed Silas singing ebex lullabies!" Petra responded.
"What? Crap! My prejudice against magic made me miss the best moments!" Liora lamented. “Hey, can I use this too? Actually, I heard Silas singing. Very funny!" said Liora’s copy.
“Wow! Two for the price of one. Is this what the Vabala means by perfectly combining with technology?” Frank commented mentally.
“Hey, I wasn't expecting this!" Liora commented.
"Interesting. We’ll still take some time to use this to its maximum potential, but I realize that it will give us a huge advantage during dangerous situations." Silas commented.
“That's it, and in the Vabala, they mention that this magic is the most powerful to combine with the others. We’ll see how this will work in the future. Now, let’s move forward. I want to test more things today. Now we’re going to see how to use mana in a wild way." Frank planned.
"Before moving forward. In the Seneca Project, we had a friend named Fabiula, who I think actually used this telepathic magic with me in combination with the talking-to-the-dead spell. On the days I had to replace my supervisor, I was feeding the database directly with the conversation data from both spells, but something was different about her magic.” Silas commented.
“Yeah, in the Vabala, there’s a huge note warning that these magics are techniques to train the mage's particular powers and that, despite being similar, each spell ends up having slightly different effects depending on each mage's personality. Should we continue with the tests?” Frank asked.
"I’m ready for it!” Petra responded. While Silas stood up to prepare the ship's security devices, Petra and Frank went to the training area nearby.
"Petra, let's try simple unarmed attacks. First, I'm going to enchant my attack, and you’ll defend. Then we’ll do the opposite, and in the end, we both enchant our attacks. I think you can already use your wild mana, right?" Frank asked.
"Yes, Frank, I’m past that part in the Vabala. Let's get on with it. It probably won’t make much difference," Petra said.
Frank prepared a kata. Rays of energy coursed through his body, causing his fist to ignite. The visual effect was impressive. He delivered a relatively light blow, and Petra tried to block it. The effect was somewhat unexpected. Petra struggled to the best of her ability to block the blow. Frank's punch goes through her defenses as if passing through Petra's arms, but Petra's counterattack hits Frank's body squarely.
Petra suffered a slight burn, but her magical resistance, enhanced by her protective jacket, managed to mitigate the blow. On the other hand, Frank hurt himself far more than he imagined, needing a few seconds to remain motionless while his regeneration kicked in.
"Sorry, Frank, I didn’t mean to hit you with the counterattack. When I couldn’t block it initially, I instinctively increased the force," Petra lamented sincerely and with a bit of concern. They all realized that the ground beneath Petra had sunk, and the mat had been damaged a bit.
Silas immediately activated the ship's auto-repair using an energy cell. The floor regenerated, and Liora realized that the ship had changed its trajectory slightly because its mass increased significantly—a few dozen tons more for a few moments. All of this information was mentally shared among them.
"Wow, the ship moved?" Frank commented, receiving the thoughts of everyone at the same time. "I think I understand what happened. At the same time that it's more difficult to block magical blows, the entire force of the physical counterattack passes without any impediment. It’s a double-edged sword. That's why maybe the mages don’t use this type of strategy in close combat.”
“Should we continue testing? Now I'll try to block blows with magic?" Petra asked.
“Sure, I’m ready for another. But, go slow, Petra." Frank warned.
After a few seconds, Frank prepared the same attack without magic, but this time, it was Petra who used her mana in a wild way. Her body seemed to transform into dark stone, and the floor started to sink even before she prepared the counterattack. Seeing this, Silas kept the energy cell engaged, muttering mentally: "And there goes the floor again,” while Liora’s copy on the bridge, piloting, thought: “Earthquake!”
The ship swayed again. Petra blocked the blow as usual, and Frank ended up with only a small bruise on his fist that immediately regenerated.
“Curious," Frank said, looking at his regenerating hand. "The part of the blow that I suffered apparently was only the magical part that Petra used.”
"If I want to scare someone using magic, it works better than the effect in the end," Petra concluded as she returned to her usual human form, letting the mana dissipate from her body.
“Okay, now we’re going to test both of us using mana in a wild way!” Frank enthusiastically exclaimed.
"Let’s go for it!" Petra said. Immediately, she returned to her stone form while Frank set his fists ablaze. The ship rocked again as a light show took place in the arena, with fire scattered everywhere and the floor consuming more energy from Silas to regenerate. Liora’s copy was already cursing words that didn’t even exist in her thoughts.
The result was a Frank sprawled on the floor with the same injuries as before, plus a bruise on his hand. Petra’s jacket had a little tiny fire that soon went out.
“Well, Silas, it looks like your jacket does work against magic!” Petra concluded, realizing Frank was fine. She continued to ponder. “I couldn’t block Frank’s attack again, but now I think if I practice, I might even be able to do something. The first time, it was really impossible because Frank’s arm had passed through my counterattack, but this time, it seems like I was able to parry a bit." Petra commented.
“Interesting!” Liora said, suddenly remembering things she’d read about kicking wizard asses. “That reminds me of the Toroem, which is one of the many species from the Daboulam galaxy. They developed a combat technique to defend against magic that is very similar to what you’re trying to do, Petra. Maybe we can talk to one of them when we have the chance."
"Well, everyone, I still want to test one thing to close out the day,” Frank said, still lying on the ground, resting for a moment while his regeneration took effect. "It's something I’m still learning to do. So, I’ll need to use the Vabala monolith during the process. About enchanting locations, I’m going to try to enchant this bar here on the ship. Then I’ll do the same thing to the bar in Rocatrista."
"Wow! Can we already do that? If it works, it’ll be wonderful!” Liora exclaimed, recalling their plan to do something with the information they’d gathered in the Northern Valley city.
Frank recovered but remained on the floor, his arms open. He thought aloud to everyone: “That's it. But the Vabala says the student might have trouble setting a reference point the first few times. Do any of you have any idea what that could mean?”
“I don't know, maybe you’ll have to set a reference point in space to enchant," Liora suggested.
Frank stood up, jumped, and spoke usually. “Well, before using the new spells, let us set up the telepathy channels properly; the Vabala suggests that you should always keep the enchantment communication channels switched off to avoid getting your senses hooked for long periods and to leave only one sense open for emergencies, like hearing. This telepathic magic can also function in some extreme cases. If something terrible happens to any of us, or we start taking physical damage, the others will sense something is wrong. And if one of us dies, the telepathy will stay active even after death, according to what’s written. It becomes easier to bring us back to life as long as at least one of us survives and can find a mage to revive the others.”
"It’s always best not to die. I think," Petra replied. "But let’s test this other magic of yours. What do we need to do?"
Frank thought for a moment and said, "Well, I’m going to share my senses with you, Petra, while Silas and Liora stay outside to see if I’m alright because I'm going to pass out. This magic causes all my senses to be transported to the enchanted place while I really don’t leave my spot. As far as I understand, only with a lot of practice can mages use this magic without becoming unconscious, blending their real and expanded senses. But that's not the case for me.”
“Right, and how are you going to enchant Rocatrista, Frank?" Petra asked.
"I just need to know the place. If I've been there personally before, it helps, but I didn’t understand how this works exactly. So I’ll test it here in the bar. I can only maintain one enchanted location for now, but I can disenchant whenever I want," Frank explained.
"Okay, Frank, I’m ready. Start whenever you want." Petra warned.
Frank returned to the stage, now carrying a chair. He sat down next to the Vabala and leaned against it as if playing a musical instrument. He imitated the sound it produced, saying: "Lo."
Immediately after speaking, Frank passed out. Liora notices a ghostly image of Frank in the bar for a few moments. Then, the ghost is immediately launched into the back wall. Petra loses her balance and falls to the ground, cursing, “What the hell was that!”
Frank felt the impact of the ship’s wall coming towards him. He continued to be rubbed against the ship’s compartments, going through the engine where he felt he was being burned and flung outside. After a while, yelling in pain, Frank realized he was in the sky, in freefall, outside the ship, and experiencing an almost unbearable cold. He continued to scream in panic from the pain and the freefall.
"Frank, you idiot! You enchanted the space, not the bar. But it seems like you’re in a bubble because you’ve stopped falling for a while now, and you’re floating in the air,” Petra said mentally.
After calming down and realizing that the pain was gone and he could only feel cold, he focused on interrupting the magic and returned to himself, sitting in the chair. He noticed Silas and Liora using probes to determine if he was really okay.
"Ah, you're back! But what happened? You were yelling, but you’re not injured," Silas asked.
“I think I enchanted space somehow, and my senses passed through the entire ship before I was floating out there. I didn’t get hurt, but I felt the pain, the heat, the cold, and everything else.” Frank reported.
Petra stood up from the ground. "Well, I didn’t pass out like Frank, but the sharing of senses through telepathy was so intense that it took me a while to realize what was going on."
“You're both really okay?” Liora worried.
"I’m ready to test again. What about you, Petra?" Frank asked, now excited, realizing he hadn’t been in any real danger.
"Everything is fine, but this time, try to do the magic first and then connect with me through telepathy. As far as I understand, you can stop whenever you want, right?" Petra asked.
“Yes, I wasn’t expecting this, but I need to concentrate a bit to stop the magic. If I take too long, the magic is interrupted if I’m physically injured. So I think if someone pinches me hard, I should wake up." Frank warned.
“Well, you could’ve mentioned this before!” Petra revolted.
The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
“The way it’s written in the Vabala, it doesn’t seem to me like the idea is to injure yourself to escape the magic’s effect. So, let’s try to avoid that," Frank explained.
"Okay, second try, then. This time, start solo mode, and let’s see what happens." Petra suggested.
"Frank, before you try again, I saw your translucent image being thrown against the bar wall, but it was too fast," Liora commented.
"Yeah, when it works, I appear like a ghost. From what I understand, that’s how people can see and communicate with me. But you can't do much as an image. Just pass messages,” Frank explained.
After a couple more tries, a few of which Frank revisited the engine, he finally managed to anchor himself to the ship's bar. In ghost form near the door, he celebrated his victory: "Finally got it! This is really strange. I’m seeing myself sitting there on the chair."
“Good, Frank! Do you think you can try to enchant Rocatrista from here? It was really hard to enchant the place right in front of you,” Liora asked.
"This might take a while. As I understand, it has more to do with how accustomed you are. But, I'll try." Frank took a deep breath, focused, and tried.
"No, it’s all dark, and I ended up in the middle of the snow. There was not a sign of any city," Frank became discouraged. Well, I'll keep trying. If I manage, I’ll let you all know."
"Take it easy, Frank. If it depends on knowing the city, maybe a good option is to search for more stuff about Rocatrista in the database, right?" Silas said. "Gate is too big to depend on trial and error."
"It must be the same as trying to revive people with magic, Frank. That's why sometimes the wrong person shows up, I guess,” Petra commented.
“Petra, you're a genius!" Frank jumped from his chair. “That’s it. I’m going to try something!" Frank seemed to do ample movements as if concentrating on a complex kata.
"Thank you! I think..." Petra replied, wondering what Frank was doing.
After a few seconds, Frank did the magic again, shouting out loud, with no noticeable changes, but the result apparently changed.
"Aha! Bingo, everyone. I'm at the Rocatrista bar!" Frank informed them mentally. "I used my willpower trick. Tonight’s going to be good!"
