Then came the advent of science, which decreased mankind’s dependence on the other realms, causing their faith, reverence, and fear in them to diminish. Losing their source of power, the denizens of both realms became desperate and invaded the mortal realm. They subjugated and enslaved humanity making them little more than batteries of fear and forced reverence, providing sustenance to their hunger for strength and power. At first, they felt a rush of power that they never felt before, but rather than nurturing them it cursed and corrupted them eventually turning them into deformed monstrous overpowered shells of their former selves. They became known as the corrupted. There was a faction from both realms that saw the error of this way, preferring the days of old, they banded together with humanity. Side by side with their human champions they fought together, and created safe havens, which became cities and empires. These areas were surrounded by runic walls which repelled the corrupted, and protected humanity. Outside these walls were the wastelands, ungoverned, unprotected, and filled with chaos. Those who lived there could only hide and find any means to survive or die.

Once these cities were properly fortified, the celestial, and nether realm beings returned to their natural homes. Rather than having the chosen being a rarity, a decision was made between all three realms that all people capable of becoming chosen would be paired with benefactors that complemented their talents. These chosen would provide faith and reverence for the other realms in return for the strength to defend their homes from the corrupted. Being chosen also required them to go beyond the walls at times to eliminate any corruption that may become a threat to the city or empire.

Those who were incompatible were labeled as the unchosen, considered weak, and shunned by society. Upon their 18th birthday, humans would be tested to see which realm, and entity they were compatible with. If chosen depending on the strength of the entity they would be ranked from E rank (weakest) to S rank (strongest beyond measure). In this new society, the strong ruled over the weak and only might made right.
