Seeing Shabolei preparing to charge on foot, Rosen immediately yelled, "Uncle! Mount your horses! Take the main road!"
They were scouts, riding well-trained warhorses. These horses were fast, enduring, and brave, while the beastified townspeople were too numerous to count. A head-on clash would surely lead to certain death. Their only hope was to meet up with Hamill's squad and immediately retreat.
As Rosen shouted, he had already mounted his horse and grasped the reins of Shabolei's warhorse, rushing towards him. The three remaining Silvermoon Rangers also mounted up, following tightly behind Rosen.
Having ridden for an afternoon, and with this docile horse under him, Rosen, though an unskilled rider, could maintain his balance with the mage's assistance.
Shabolei leapt onto his horse, roaring loudly as he did.
"Hamill, I'm here!"
The high-ranked warrior's bellowing was like thunder, instantly carrying across the entire Moonlight Town, startling birds into flight throughout the forest.
Indistinct shouts came from up ahead in response: "General! Leave us! Retreat! Retreat!"
It was Hamill's voice.
Of course Shabolei would not retreat. He roared back, "Hold on! Hold your ground! Rally on the main road!"
As they spoke, the party of four warriors and one mage began quickly activating their runestones.
Strange noises rang out as beams of light illuminated each of them.
Intermediate natural spell 'Stalwart Heart'. Greatly enhancing the endurance of up to three targets, lasting half an hour or until dispelled after cast.
Intermediate logic spell 'Intermediate Arrow Ward'. Upon activation, a layer of reactive flame barrier forms around the target's body, capable of unleashing a minor fiery shockwave when struck by arrows, deflecting them away. This spell will last for half an hour or until triggered 30 consecutive times before dissipating.
Intermediate natural spell 'Haste'. Vastly boosts the target's sprinting speed, up to double its original, lasting ten minutes or until dispelled.
However, the targets were not the people, but the warhorses. Accommodating the enhancement of Haste was part of the warhorses' daily training. As the blue radiance enveloped their bodies, the steeds showed no panic, instead great excitement, instantly unleashing the spell's full effects.
The hoofbeats of the five warhorses melded into one, shrouded in a veil of blue glow. Like a condensed gale, they thundered towards the not-so-distant Moonlight Town.
Galloping at full speed, Shabolei led at the head, with three Silvermoon Rangers flanking his left, right, and rear, while Rosen the accompanying mage was protected in the middle.
The roaring wind, thunderous hoofbeats, inhuman beastly howls, and the swiftly flashing trees on both sides all combined to paint an otherworldly battlefield.
Immersed within, Rosen felt his mind coalesce to an unprecedented level, reaching heights that no amount of effort could attain in normal times.
A thought flashed quickly through his mind. 'The virtual training was but a highly realistic game, still quite far from true combat.'
Though the virtual training aided his swift mastery of spells, it could not ultimately help him break through his limits. Only by staring into the eyes of death could one achieve true transcendence!
With just an intermediate spell protecting them from arrows, it was far from safe. Rosen yelled loudly, "Stay within ten steps of me!"
As he spoke, he had already completed his incantation. Agile Casting augmented, unique gravity spell, consuming thirty percent mana, unleashing the extraordinary power of 'Static Vortex Field'!
A strange sound rang out as a hemispherical, slightly distorted force field materialized five meters around each rider.
Within 3 seconds of Rosen completing his spell, the dense forest lining the road echoed with the frequent twangs of bowstrings.
Arrows with flashing blue-white tips shot out from the woods towards the galloping steeds.
In an instant, many arrows entered the vortex field, their trajectories immediately changing as they did. The vast majority warped along curving paths at high speeds, deflecting back out. The rare few penetrating deeper had their orientation drastically altered, mostly grazing past the horses' bodies.
The few actually posing any threat were easily deflected by the warriors. And so the riders only heard the air shriek past their ears, remaining completely unharmed.
Shabolei was overjoyed, praising loudly, "Good spell, Rosen!" He spurred his horse on even faster, madly charging towards the sound's origin. At the same time, he let out a whistling call.
After running for a bit, warhorses burst out from the woods to join them. These were the mounts Hamill had left behind. And so, their horses suddenly numbered eleven.
Though somewhat far, their speed was immense. In less than 2 minutes, they had reached the town's southwest corner and clearly saw the battle ahead.
The beastified townspeople were densely packed, too many to count. Two varieties could be made out.
One kind wore shabby clothing, protruding muzzles, sharp fangs and claws, resembling werewolves to a good degree. Their strength and speed were shockingly immense. Rosen saw they could easily leap onto two meter high shacks, and their claws could readily sever arms-thick wooden staffs.
The other kind wore the manor guards' armor, their physique largely unchanged, but eyes turned bloodshot with beastly black fur covering their exposed skin. And as their bodies were minimally altered, these blood-eyed beasts still employed weapons - they were likely the archers from before.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
With a quick glance, Rosen knew the blood-eyed beasts were higher leveled, the commanders and elite warriors. While the wolf beasts were purely cannon fodder meant for frontal assault.
Right now, the attackers besieging Hamill's squad were all wolf beasts.
It was visible that against the onslaught of numerous wolf beasts, Hamill and his 6 Silvermoon Rangers were already drenched in blood. Like small boats in a storm, they swayed precariously, liable to capsize at any moment.
If not for their steel chainmail armor, if not for the runestones they had already used up, if not for them all being formidable mid-ranked warriors with amazing martial prowess and flawless cooperation amongst each other, they would have been completely wiped out long ago.
Seeing this, Shabolei's heart thumped wildly, yet he still charged ahead unhesitatingly.
"Follow me in!" Roaring, his blade shone with silvery-white radiance. Before he even arrived, two silvery blade beams shot out left and right.
The attack power of a high-ranked warrior's blade beams was astonishing. Cutting out two seven to eight meter long, over two meter wide bloody paths through the beast horde.
Rosen wasn't idle either. Having already downed an intermediate focus potion, the Silvermoon Focus Sword was also in his hands. Aiming at the center of the street behind Hamill, he pointed.
Impact Fireball, thirty percent mana infused!
The mana coalesced into a glowing orb the size of an infant's head, shooting straight towards the wolf beast mob behind Hamill's squad.
An earthshaking explosion, scorching flames, raging shockwaves blasted open at the street's center.
Over ten beastified humans at ground zero were directly blown into chunks, blood, organs and shredded meat seeming to soar into the air before raining back down like droplets.
Meanwhile, the berserk shockwave knocked back and flattened all surrounding beastified humans within a 20 meter radius.
The thunderous boom also stunned the entire battlefield into silence. Even the besieged Silvermoon Rangers were frightened by it.
Though no strangers to the Fireball spell, it was rare to see one with such power, especially cast by a young mage.
Fortunately the warhorses had their ears plugged and were rigorously trained, otherwise they would have panicked and lost control from that impact.
And this spell markedly eased the pressure on Hamill's squad, clearly sensing a momentary lull in the endless incoming tide of attacks.
Spurred by survival instinct, he summoned his remaining strength, twin blades swirling like the wind to forcibly carve out a bloody path through the beast horde.
"Brothers! Follow me! Follow me!" He bellowed furiously.
Shabolei had also charged up close by now. Astride his horse with blade in hand, he hacked and slashed through the wolf horde, carving a route out. The 3 Silvermoon Rangers who followed also battled fiercely.
Rosen was guarded tightly in their midst. He was in no hurry to cast any spells, wholly focused on observing the battlefield, paying special attention to the blood-eyed beasts' actions at the back.
After a slight pause, another extraordinary Impact Fireball flew out, accurately striking the densest cluster of beastified humans, again disrupting the enemy's freshly resumed offensive.
By now, the two sides had converged.
Shabolei roared loudly, "On your horses! All mount up!"
In the brief window they mounted, Shabolei and the 3 rangers frantically swung their weapons, unleashing blade beams at high frequency to clear a path.
But the wolf beasts were simply too many, their assault exceptionally frenzied, caring nothing for their own lives!
Shabolei fought with all his might, but still suffered several injuries across his body. If not for his Darkmoon armor's astounding defense, just those few hits would have torn off chunks of his flesh.
Seeing the endless tide of wolf beasts pouring out from the town, as though inexhaustible, with his own strength reduced to less than forty percent after intense fighting! His heart chilled to the bone. Were his eyes deceiving him? Was he truly going to perish in this ghostly place?
But right then, Rosen's voice entered his ears. "Uncle, get ready to break through!"
Accompanying these words, a translucent sphere of light shot three meters up before swiftly morphing into an enormous ring of radiance, then heavily dropping down upon the beasts encircling them.
Sixty percent mana powered. Extraordinary power of Chaos. Heavenly Domain!
A bizarre noise rang out as all beastified warriors within one to eight meters - blood-eyes and wolf beasts alike - were sent flying aslant, none spared. This single spell had flung away at least 40 beastified humans, which included 16 formidable blood-eyed beasts.
And they flew up at least 50 meters high! From afar, it was as if a 'flower' of humans had bloomed from the ground.
For those surviving the 50 meter free fall, they would still need time to rush back. Either way, their surroundings were instantly cleared.
But the caster Rosen also paid a price. He felt his mana drain away like an avalanche, even depleting over half of the mana stored in his Bracelet of Stellar Intellect.
A single notion dominated his mind - in true battlefields, facing terrifying human wave tactics, his mana was as frail as paper.
Thankfully they were just scouts, not needing to fight to the death. As long as they could break through, it was success. Decisively draining the bracelet's remaining mana, he instantly recovered to forty percent!
With no time to ponder further, he bellowed loudly, "Let's go, Uncle!"
To Shabolei at this moment, Rosen's voice was akin to the hand of salvation itself, forcefully pulling him back from the jaws of death!
Mustering his remaining strength, he fiercely spurred his horse. "Spearhead formation! Charge!"
The warhorse neighed painfully but lunged forth. Having over ten meters to accelerate, it rapidly gained speed, forcefully smashing open a gap within the wolf beast encirclement.
Shabolei wasn't idle either. Hastily downing a health potion, his daemon-slaying blades hacked left and right, plowing a path forward like a juggernaut.
The Silvermoon Rangers following closely began converging towards Shabolei as they wildly galloped.
The rigorous training showed its worth. In just five to six seconds, they formed a spearhead formation with Shabolei at the front, sheltering Rosen within.
More beastified humans still charged out ahead, trying to obstruct the Silvermoon Rangers' escape.
Rosen's mind stirred, unleashing another Heavenly Domain at two-layer mana cost! Instantly, over ten more beastified humans were flung skyward, the path ahead clearing once more.
With this acceleration buffer, the warhorses finally reached their maximum speed.
Amidst the thunderous hoofbeats, the Silvermoon Rangers gradually pulled away from the hellish Moonlight Town behind them, slowly widening the distance between themselves and the beastified townspeople.
During this time, Rosen tightly clutched the reins, eyes wide yet gaze unfocused. But beads of sweat had already permeated his thick leather hat, faint wisps of white steam seemingly rising from beneath.
One breath! Two breaths! The mana consumed to cast Heavenly Domain swiftly regenerated.
Just as the team was about to successfully break through, strange noises came from the roadside woods up ahead, as if something large was approaching swiftly.
Right as the Silvermoon Rangers grew apprehensive, the dazed look in Rosen's eyes regained clarity. He yelled loudly. "Careful! It's the Bear King beast!"
As if in response, a thunderous bear's roar echoed from the forest. Right after, an enormous shadow burst out from the woods, blocking their path ahead.
And that wasn't all! The gigantic bear, its body caked in thick layers of soil, reared up on its hind legs. An earthen glow emanated from its body, especially intense around its front paws.
Shabolei paled in fright. "Bad news! It's a large-scale Quake spell!"
If they suffered a Quake spell in this situation, just the raw might of the spell itself would be dreadful. Even if the mounted warriors somehow survived, the warhorses would surely perish.
With dead horses and a giant bear obstructing their path, the endless horde of beastified humans behind would undoubtedly catch up and surround them again.
Even if the God of War incarnated, facing such a horrifying beastly town, death would be all but certain.
