Chapter 29: The Way of the Elf

Chapter 13: The Way of the Elf

Alexander happily began his new apprenticeship, and after learning of the youth's incredible talent, the She-Elf happily dedicated herself to teaching him. As an extreme traditionalist within Elven culture, she was an expert in Wood, Wind, and Light Magic, as well as many other skills related to nature.

In the mornings, she would take him out to gather food and other materials from the wilderness.

After this came his lessons in elven history and theology.

Following a brief lunch came magic classes where he learned the spells Plant Communion, which allowed him to vaguely sense the emotions of plant life. There was also Breeze, which allowed him to control small quantities of air, and Spark, which could illuminate a small area. They were very traditional elven magics, and Alexander enjoyed learning to use them.

After magic practice came physical training with his staff and his Elven Running skill. Livian wanted to teach him to use a bow, but when the youth confessed he was an absolute pacifist, she gave up on this idea.

She doubled down on teaching him the art of woodland medicine, which was why she was in the Poison Wood in the first place. She had come to discover new medicine amidst the poisonous wildlife and had experienced some major success. Alexander was more than happy to learn everything she threw at him. Meanwhile, Nathaniel had traded spells with the woman and was allowed to transcribe notes so long as he attended all the lessons.

As three weeks flew by, Alexander had never felt more in tune with his racial heritage and wished he could stay longer. However, by this point, thanks to his elevated comprehension and learning abilities, he had already formed his Wood, Wind, and Light Symbols. He knew he had to continue with his journey, though, like with Biffer, Livian also tasked him with a final mission.

Like so, Alexander ended up suspended upside down by a rope and lowered into a clearing filled with massive sleeping spiders. Looking up at Nathaniel, who lowered him, he called in a whisper, "Stop shuffling; they'll hear you."

Grunting, the half-elf hissed back in a whisper, "If anything is going to wake them up, it's your worrying."

They both froze as one spider twitched in its sleep, and they both sighed in relief when it rolled over and grew still once more. A few moments later, Alexander's body was lowered right next to one of the biggest spiders, and he brought out a knife and began to swing his body back and forth. Once he got enough momentum, Nathaniel grunted, "Hurry up."

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

With a careful hand, Alexander took note of this and began to cut off the low-lying mushrooms that grew from the spider's back symbiotically. After pocketing a few handfuls, he gestured for his friend to pull him back up. At this same moment, the spider began to stir and eventually awoke. It looked around, seemingly sniffing the air, but couldn't find the prey it smelled so close. The great beats let out a cry, and its brethren also awoke and began to scurry around the trees and earth in search of food.

Almost falling out of the trees, the two young Elfkin fled through the branches and were forced to use Alexander's Drowsiness spell, his Bonk skill, and his new Spark Spell to escape.

Once they had escaped the spiders' tertiary by scaling a tall cliff via a few vines, they sat down to pant. While recovering, Nathaniel gasped out, "Did you get enough?"

Alexander brought out his harvest and nodded happily, "Definitely, let's get working."

The two brothers brought out several odd plants and began to dice, mash, and mix them together. Ultimately, everything ended up in a boiling pot, which they tended for nearly an hour. Eventually, the steam from this pot turned black. At that point, they discontinued the fire magic and collected the substance in a vial while Alexander received a notification:

Smiling, the Elf stood up and reached out to Nathaniel, offering, "Come on, let's finish this."

"Hell yeah." His friend responded while taking the offered assistance.

They ran deep into the woods, eventually coming to a clearing. They looked around carefully, though, before they could travel too far. An enormous gorilla covered in white fur emerged with a roar. It charged them, forcing them to evade violent outlaws. Luckily, the creature's body was large, so as planned, Nathaniel distracted it by shouting while Alexander stunned the beast with a Bonk.

Once the creature was made drowsy by magic, the two split up and searched till Netahnial called, "It's over here."

Alexander rushed over and let out a sigh of relief as his eyes fell on a baby white gorilla with a sickly expression. Its actions were lethargic, and its pitiful cries were full of weakness. He used his Drowsiness spell to calm it down while speaking softly, "It's okay, kiddo. We're here to help."

Once the child was good and sleepy, Nathaniel brought out the antidote they had made and fed it to the child. At first, it was reluctant, but after feeling its effect, it drank it up quickly. Once finished, it released a happy noise as its complexion grew much better.

Both youths smiled, though a loud crash rang out behind them, caused by a silver-furred gorilla even bigger than the first one they had encountered. Panicked, Nathenial grabbed the white baby and held it up between them and the parent. The silver-furred creature pounded on its chest and let out a roar of rage, fuming with anger. Seeing this, the baby let out a happy giggle and waved its arms as if it wanted its parent.

Seeing its offspring's renewed health, the gorilla was started, at which Nathaniel blurted, "Time to disappear."

Alexander needed and responded, "I agree."

He threw down a smoke bomb, and as the fog spread out, the two quickly fled, leaving the animals to reunite. As they fled, the two friends laughed; however, neither slowed down even for a moment. They were so focused on running they hardly noticed the notification they received:
