Chapter 7: And the Wound Was Gone

Chapter 7: And the Wound Was Gone

What Peter saw when he woke up was baffling, the wound in his leg was gone. As if it never existed in the first place. In the right corner of his vision, his health bar said 125/125. The wolf was gone as well, at least he could neither see the wolf or hear it. What should he do? His stomach was rumbling, food and water were definitely one of his priorities. He was afraid, if there was one wolf, there were probably even more. He needed to figure out what essence was too, he doubted he would get lucky again, the next encounter with such a feral wolf could kill him. It would be nice if he had company too, Peter was a chatterbox and he did not like being alone.

Peter decided to climb higher in the tree, maybe he would see something interesting. Peter knew he was in a forest, but to see it from up high was breathtaking. Huge ancient looking trees spread miles and miles. Majestic, Peter had no other words for it. A streamlet slithered through the trees. It was barely visible, but it was there. It looked like it was a two or three miles away, Peter could walk that distance easily enough. He just had to be careful not to anger any wolves. Remembering in what direction the river was, Peter climbed down.

The blue box caught surprised him. It just dinged into existence. The rarity was common, like his sprint skill. Maybe that said something about how easy it was to get. Peter cared little, he waved away the pop-up, and dropped down from the tree.

The ground was covered by moss. Near the tree he found a sturdy stick, he took it with him. A stick couldn’t harm a wolf, but it made him feel a little bit more secure. With a stick in his hand, Peter began walking towards the stream.

New quest

Reach the river

Get to the river.

It may seem easy….

Reward

10 Essence

The tiny bit of security that he just acquired immediately left his body. That sounded ominous. Did this mean that it would be difficult to get to the streamlet? At least now he knew how to get essence. He needed to complete this quest. There was no use worrying. Peter was calm. Very calm. His walking pace had increased and his eyes were darting around.

“I just have to get to the river, I can do this. Get to the river, easy-peasy.” Peter began talking to himself. Questions floated through his mind. “Where is everyone? Everybody got transported, that’s what the message said. Then why am I alone? How does essence make me stronger? How the hell does this all work?” Needless to say, Peter had no answers for his questions.

Making noise in a forest where there are wolves is not a good idea. Predators single out the unusual noises, and move towards the source of it. Without Peter noticing it, a little green creature was stalking him. After twenty minutes of stalking, the creature had waited enough, Peter was no threat. It unslung its bow, aimed, and missed.

Peter snapped out of his daydreaming when suddenly an arrow hit the tree in front of him. That was bad. Peter turned around in a panic to see where the arrow came from. An hideous green creature stood there, not even 3 foot tall. It had little tusks in its mouth and its eyes gleamed with craftiness. It looked awfully humanoid, standing on two legs, having two arms. But there was no time to inspect the creature with greater detail, as it was already putting another arrow on its bow. Peter had to move, had to get out of range. He ran for cover to the nearest tree, and stood behind it. What could he do?

New quest

Kill or be killed

Kill the goblin.

Wait too long and it will call for help….

Reward

15 Essence

Battle mode activated. Incoming messages and pop-ups are blocked

Kill? He had to kill it? It was logical, but Peter had never killed anything bigger than a bug. Peter realized that it was the only way to stop the goblin from calling help. How many more of these goblins would there be if the goblin called for help? Would all the goblins want to kill him? If it was kill, or be killed, maybe Peter could do this. This was his survival. He took a couple of deep breaths, readied his stick, and ran out from his cover. He could see the goblin, it was around twenty yards away. The goblin released its arrow. Peter tried to dodge it while rushing towards the goblin. It grazed his shoulder, his health declined to 115/125. Peter was now almost in front of the goblin. It released a high pitch shriek and then attacked him with a dagger. While the goblin stabbed him in his thigh, Peter swung his stick and hit the goblin’s head. And he hit it again, and again, and again. Finally, something cracked, and the goblin fell over.

A rush that paled in comparison to the hard drugs that Peter tried once entered his body. He felt like flying, but it was only a fleeting sensation, and soon Peter was left facing reality. In front of him lay a goblin, head battered till it was reduced to bleeding pulp.

Well, that was a horrific reminder. He emptied what little he had left in his stomach. With the taste of puke in his mouth, Peter ran away. Peter was getting sick of this, both literally and figuratively. Normally he would be excited, he was in world were he could become stronger. He had a fresh new start, one that he always wanted. But not like this.

It was a destructive way of thinking. With difficulty Peter changed his state of mind, and began thinking positive thoughts. Yes, he would grow stronger. Yes, he would make the best out of this. It was still a new start, and he would take every opportunity. Resting for a bit, Peter sat on the moss, and looked at his Status.
