CHAPTER 6: WOLVES
The night is still and silent, the only sound the crackling of the dying fire and the occasional rustle of leaves. Elara is on watch, her eyes scanning the darkness with practiced vigilance. I rest uneasily, the events of the day playing over in my mind. My wound throbs dully, a constant reminder of the dangers lurking in this world.
I drift in and out of sleep, my senses alert even in rest. The moon is high in the sky when I hear it—a low, guttural growl that sends a shiver down my spine. My eyes snap open, and I see Elara tense, her hand gripping the hilt of her longsword.
"They're here," she whispers, her voice barely audible.
I sit up, every muscle in my body on edge. "What is it?"
"Wolves," she replies, her eyes never leaving the darkness beyond the fire's light. "A pack of them. Stay close to the fire and be ready to defend yourself."
The growls grow louder, more numerous. My heart pounds in my chest as I scramble to my feet, drawing my dagger. The firelight flickers, casting long shadows that dance eerily among the trees. I can see the glint of eyes in the darkness, circling us, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Elara steps forward, her posture calm and controlled. "Stay behind me, Orin. We need to hold our ground and make them think twice about attacking."
I nod, gripping my dagger tightly. The wolves emerge from the shadows, sleek and muscular, their eyes glowing with predatory hunger. There are at least five of them, their movements synchronized and predatory. They circle us, their growls filling the night air.
Elara raises her sword, her voice steady. "We have to show them we’re not easy prey. Be ready to strike if they get too close."
The lead wolf, larger and more scarred than the others, steps forward, its lips pulled back in a snarl. It lunges at us, and Elara meets it with a swift, powerful swing of her sword. The blade connects with a sickening thud, and the wolf yelps in pain, stumbling back.
The other wolves hesitate, their growls turning into uncertain whines. Elara steps forward, her sword gleaming in the firelight. "Come on, then! Who's next?"

The wolves pace back and forth, their confidence wavering. I watch them carefully, my dagger ready, my heart pounding. One of the smaller wolves darts forward, snapping at my legs. I react instinctively, plunging my dagger into its side. The wolf yelps and collapses, its body twitching.
Two more wolves attack simultaneously, one going for Elara and the other for me. Elara moves with deadly precision, her sword a blur of motion as she cuts down her opponent. I narrowly dodge the wolf's jaws, slashing at it with my dagger. The blade cuts deep, and the wolf retreats, bleeding heavily.
The lead wolf snarls, rallying the remaining pack members. They seem to understand that this fight won't be as easy as they thought. With a final growl, the leader turns and disappears into the shadows, the others following reluctantly.
Elara lowers her sword, her breathing heavy but controlled. "They're gone... for now."
I exhale a shaky breath, the adrenaline still coursing through my veins. "That was... intense."
She nods, wiping her sword clean. "Wolves are cunning and dangerous, especially in packs. But we handled ourselves well."
I look at the fallen wolves, their bodies still and silent. "Will they come back?"
"Unlikely," Elara replies. "They know we're not easy prey. They'll look for easier targets."
We spend the rest of the night on high alert, the fire blazing brightly to ward off any further threats.

The new skill, "Presence Perception Lv: 1" catches my attention. The idea of sensing the presence of enemies fills me with a newfound confidence. It would have been incredibly useful during the wolf attack. I resolve to practice and refine this ability, knowing it could be the difference between life and death.
As dawn breaks, we prepare to head back to the city. Despite the night's ordeal, I feel a strange sense of accomplishment. Each challenge we face, each danger we overcome, makes me stronger, more resilient.
As we pack up our camp, Elara turns to me with a serious expression. "You did well, Orin. You're learning quickly. But remember, the wilds are unpredictable. Always be prepared for the unexpected."
I nod, her words sinking in. "I will. Thank you, Elara."
With our gear packed and the morning sun rising, we set off back towards the city. The forest feels less threatening in the daylight, but the memory of the wolves' attack lingers. This world is full of dangers, but with Elara by my side and my own growing skills, I feel ready to face whatever comes next.
As we walk, I can’t help but glance at the horizon, wondering what other challenges await us. The journey is far from over, but with each step, I grow more determined to uncover the mysteries of this world and my place within it.
