CHAPTER 12: HIDDEN TREASURES PART 1

The morning sun filters through the curtains of our room at the inn, casting a warm, golden light that gently wakes me. I stretch, feeling the residual peace from the previous day's experiences. Elara is already up, her movements quiet and deliberate as she prepares for the day ahead.

"Good morning, Orin," she says with a smile. "How did you sleep?"

"Better than I have in a long time," I reply, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from my eyes. "That ritual yesterday really helped. I feel more... centered."

"I'm glad to hear that," she says. "We have a lot to do today. Are you ready?"

I nod, getting out of bed and starting to dress. "What's the plan?"

"We'll head back into the ruins, to search for the usage of the ancient key, maybe it will lead to even greater treasures," she explains. "Oh, but let's first tell the guild about our plans."

"Sounds good," I agree. With our plans forged, we ready our bags and eat the rest of our breakfast.

On the way to the guild, we make a quick detour to the apothecary to sell our overstock of medicinal and alchemical herbs. The shop is a small, cluttered space filled with the scents of dried flowers and exotic spices. The apothecary, an elderly woman with sharp eyes and a quick smile, examines our collection with practiced ease.

"These are quite good," she says, nodding approvingly. "I'll give you a fair price for them."

We barter for a bit, settling on a price that leaves us both satisfied. With our coin purses a little heavier, we thank her and head to the guild.

At the guild, we encounter the stern-looking receptionist once again. Her sharp eyes soften slightly as she sees us, a rare sign of approval.

"Good morning," she greets us. "What brings you here today?"

"We plan to return to the ruins and search for the use of the ancient key," Elara explains. "We believe it may lead to even greater treasures."

The receptionist nods, retrieving the ancient key we had previously given the guild for inspection. "Be careful," she warns, handing it over. "The deeper you go, the more dangerous it will become."

"Thank you," I say, taking the key. "We'll be careful."

Heading to the gate to leave, we encounter the stall of the merchant I met on my first day. The merchant, a jovial man with a thick beard and twinkling eyes, waves us over.

"Ah, my young friends!" he exclaims. "Good to see you again. What can I interest you in today?"

We chat for a bit, browsing his wares. I end up buying a small vial of healing potion, just in case. Elara picks up a few extra provisions, and with our purchases made, we set off into the forest.

The forest is dense and alive with the sounds of nature. Birds chirp overhead, and the rustling of leaves creates a soothing backdrop to our journey. The path is familiar, but there's an underlying tension, a sense of anticipation as we venture deeper.

Our first encounter with monsters is a pack of wolves led by a dire wolf. The glint in the dire wolf's eyes reminds me of the pack leader who ambushed us on our last night camping in the forest. It seems it is out for revenge. Elara fights the wolves with her usual grace and precision, while I prepare to cast one of the shadow magic spells I learned.

Focusing my mind on the light inside me, I use the shadows created by my soul to strengthen the shadows of the trees and vines around us. Unleashing my magic, dark shadowy spikes pierce multiple wolves, ending them instantly and painlessly.

While I take out some of the wolves, Elara beheads most of them with swift, deadly strikes. She even manages to injure the dire wolf's right eye. With its pack vanquished, the dire wolf howls to retreat, its wounded eye glinting with a mix of pain and fury.

The wolves tried to use the intertwined light and shadow to make easy prey but met their demise due to my shadow magic. We catch our breath, the tension easing as the forest returns to its natural state.

Further inside the forest, we meet upon the ruins once more. The ancient stone structures loom before us, covered in moss and vines. The air is thick with the sense of history and danger.

We search the ruins, encountering goblins lurking in the shadows. They attack with wild abandon, their beady eyes gleaming with malice. Elara dispatches them with ease, her sword flashing in the dim light. I support her with shadow magic, ensnaring the goblins in tendrils of darkness.

As we delve deeper, we come across a hobgoblin, a larger and more menacing version of its kin. It roars, brandishing a crude but deadly weapon. The fight is fierce, the hobgoblin's strength and agility surprising. Elara and I work together, our movements synchronized. Finally, Elara lands a decisive blow, and the hobgoblin collapses with a guttural groan.

After its defeat, I open the [Monster Lexicon Lv: 4] to search for good uses of the hobgoblin. The lexicon provides valuable information on its hide, which can be used to craft sturdy armor, and its teeth, which are prized by alchemists for their potency in certain elixirs.

As the sun begins to set, we manage to discover a hidden passage leading to a keyhole. Unlocking it, the walls start to rumble as the door slowly opens. A smell of rotting flesh quickly fills the air, almost causing us to retreat.

Slowly heading inside, we hear a low growl and a clattering of bones. Elara lights a torch on one of the walls, revealing a group of walking corpses animated by the very darkness surrounding them.

Elara warns me, "This is bad. Try to entangle the skeletons with shadow magic. We won't make much progress on them otherwise. The zombies should be easy pickings with my sword."

As Elara swings her longsword, decapitating the zombies in a majestic dance of life and death, I try my best to stop the skeletons with vines made of shadow magic. However, their natural affinity for darkness makes it difficult. My dagger proves ineffective against their bones, chipping away but doing little damage.

I struggle to buy Elara enough time, the skeletons proving to be a challenging opponent. They move with eerie precision, their bony fingers clawing at me with relentless determination.

Elara finally finishes off the last zombie, turning her attention to the skeletons. She swings her sword with precision, aiming for their joints to incapacitate them. The clatter of bones fills the chamber as the skeletons fall, piece by piece.

With the immediate threat vanquished, we take a moment to catch our breath. The hidden chamber is dark and foreboding, the air thick with the scent of decay. Elara's torch casts flickering shadows on the walls, adding to the eerie atmosphere.

"We need to be careful," Elara says, her voice steady but tinged with concern. "There may be more dangers ahead."

I nod, feeling the weight of the key in my pocket. The ruins hold many secrets, and we are just beginning to uncover them. The hidden passage stretches out before us, a dark and winding path that promises both danger and reward.

As we venture further into the depths of the ruins, the air grows colder, and the darkness seems to press in around us. The flickering torchlight reveals ancient carvings on the walls, telling tales of forgotten times and lost civilizations.

We come across a large chamber, its ceiling high and supported by massive pillars. In the center of the room stands a stone pedestal, and atop it rests a gleaming artifact. The artifact is a small, intricately designed box, covered in runes that glow faintly in the torchlight.

Elara approaches the pedestal cautiously, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of traps or hidden dangers. "This must be what the key unlocks," she murmurs, reaching out to touch the artifact.

As her fingers brush against the box, a low rumble echoes through the chamber. The ground beneath us begins to shake, and the walls tremble. From the shadows, more skeletons emerge, their eyes glowing with an eerie light.

"Get ready!" Elara shouts, drawing her sword.

I focus my mind, drawing upon the shadow magic within me. The shadows in the room respond to my call, twisting and writhing as I shape them into weapons. Dark tendrils lash out at the skeletons, wrapping around their limbs and immobilizing them.

Elara moves with grace and precision, her sword flashing in the dim light as she cuts down the skeletons one by one. Despite their relentless assault, we manage to hold our ground, our combined efforts keeping the undead at bay.

The battle is intense, the clatter of bones and the hiss of shadow magic filling the air. Just as it seems we are gaining the upper hand, a new figure steps from the darkness. This one is different—taller and more imposing, clad in dark armor that seems to absorb the light.

"A death knight," Elara says, her voice tinged with awe and fear. "Be careful, Orin. This one is powerful."

The death knight advances, its sword raised high. I summon all my strength, channeling the shadows to create a barrier between us. The death knight's sword crashes against the barrier, sending a shockwave through the chamber.

Elara charges forward, her sword meeting the death knight's in a clash of steel. The battle is fierce, the two warriors locked in a deadly dance. I support Elara from a distance, using my shadow magic to distract and hinder the death knight.

Despite our best efforts, the death knight proves to be a formidable opponent. Its strikes are powerful, and its defenses seem impenetrable. Just when it seems we might be overwhelmed, I remember the light within me—the light that balances the shadow.

Drawing upon that light, I focus my magic, creating a beam of pure energy. The beam pierces through the darkness, striking the death knight and staggering it. Elara seizes the opportunity, delivering a powerful blow that shatters the death knight's armor.

With a final, desperate strike, Elara brings the death knight to its knees. The dark figure collapses, its armor falling away to reveal nothing but dust and shadows. The chamber falls silent, the threat vanquished.

Breathing heavily, Elara and I approach the pedestal once more. The artifact remains undisturbed, its runes glowing softly in the torchlight.

"We did it," Elara says, her voice filled with relief.

I nod, reaching out to take the artifact. As my fingers close around it, I feel a surge of energy, a connection to the ancient magic within.
