Chapter 5: Into the Woods
As we venture deeper into the woods, the dense canopy of leaves overhead thickens, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The air is filled with the earthy scent of moss and decaying leaves, and the sounds of distant animal calls create an eerie symphony.
We come across more slimes, their gelatinous bodies shimmering in the filtered sunlight. Elara and I work in tandem, using the techniques she taught me to efficiently dispatch the creatures. Each successful kill reinforces my growing confidence and skill.
After dealing with a particularly stubborn slime, I notice a cluster of plants with broad, dark green leaves and small, white flowers. My instinct tells me these are medicinal herbs.
"Elara, wait a moment," I say, kneeling to inspect the plants. "These herbs look familiar. I think they're used in healing potions."
Elara watches as I carefully gather the herbs, placing them in a pouch. "You have a good eye, Orin. Those are indeed medicinal herbs. They'll come in handy for making potions and salves."
I smile, feeling a sense of accomplishment. My knowledge of herbs might not be extensive, but it's already proving useful. We continue on, and I keep an eye out for other plants that might be valuable for alchemy.
Further into the woods, the atmosphere grows tenser. The forest seems quieter, the usual sounds of wildlife replaced by an unsettling silence. Elara signals for us to stop, her hand on the hilt of her sword.
"We're entering goblin territory," she whispers. "Goblins are cunning and often set traps. Stay close and be alert."
We move cautiously, every rustle of leaves and snap of twigs putting us on edge. Suddenly, a group of goblins bursts from the underbrush, their green, wiry bodies brandishing crude weapons.
"Remember," Elara instructs, "goblins are weak individually, but they rely on numbers and ambush tactics. Stay focused and don't let them surround you."
The goblins rush us, their high-pitched war cries filling the air. Elara engages the first wave, her sword a blur of motion as she deflects their attacks and strikes back with lethal precision. I draw my dagger, positioning myself to cover her flank.
A goblin lunges at me, and I sidestep its clumsy attack, plunging my dagger into its side. It falls with a gurgling cry, and I turn to face another. This one is more cautious, circling me with a malicious glint in its eyes. I remember Elara's advice and keep my movements steady, not letting it draw me into a reckless charge.
Elara dispatches another goblin and quickly assesses our situation. "You're doing great, Orin. Keep it up!"
With renewed determination, I focus on the goblin in front of me. It makes a feint to the left, then tries to strike from the right, but I'm ready. I parry its attack and counter with a swift thrust, piercing its chest. The goblin collapses, its weapon clattering to the ground.
The remaining goblins hesitate, seeing their numbers dwindling. Elara seizes the moment, launching a decisive attack that scatters them. The few survivors flee into the forest, their cowardly nature overtaking their desire for battle.
Breathing heavily, I look around at the fallen goblins and the quieting forest. "We did it," I say, a mixture of relief and pride in my voice.
Elara smiles, wiping her blade clean. "You fought well, Orin. Goblins may not be the most formidable foes, but handling them effectively is crucial. You've proven yourself today."
As we take a moment to rest, I notice another type of plant nearby, its leaves a deep purple with small, blue berries. "These look like they could be useful for alchemy," I say, gathering a few samples.
Elara nods approvingly. "Those are alchemical herbs. They're valuable for making various potions and elixirs. You're not only improving as a fighter but also as a resourceful adventurer."
With our packs slightly heavier and our confidence bolstered, we decide to head back to the city. However, as we make our way back through the forest, a loud rustling in the bushes startles us. A wild boar, larger and more aggressive than I expected, charges out, it's tusks gleaming.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
"Careful, Orin!" Elara shouts, drawing her sword.
The boar rushes at us with surprising speed. Elara moves to intercept it, but the beast is relentless. I attempt to flank it, but the boar swerves and rams into me, it's tusk grazing my side. Pain flares up, and I stagger back, clutching the wound.
Elara quickly steps in, delivering a precise slash to the boar's side. The creature squeals in pain but continues its assault. With a few more coordinated strikes, we manage to bring it down, its massive body collapsing onto the forest floor.
Elara rushes to my side, examining my wound. "You're hurt. We need to treat this."
We find a small clearing and set up a makeshift camp. I sit down, wincing as the pain from the wound intensifies. Elara kneels beside me, inspecting the gash. "It's not too deep, but we need to clean and bandage it."
Using the medicinal herbs we gathered earlier, I start concocting a simple healing salve. I crush the herbs into a paste and mix them with water from my waterskin. As I work, Elara butchers the boar, preparing the meat for a meal.
The smell of cooking meat fills the air as Elara roasts the boar over a small fire. She adds some provisions and herbs we picked up along the way, creating a hearty stew. Once the salve is ready, I apply it to my wound, feeling a soothing coolness spread through the injury.
"How does it feel?" Elara asks, stirring the stew.
"Much better, thanks," I reply, grateful for her help and the knowledge that allowed me to create the salve.
We share a meal, the boar meat tender and flavorful, complemented by the herbs and vegetables. As we eat, the sun begins to set, casting a warm glow through the trees. The exhaustion from the day's battles and the comfort of a full belly start to lull me into a sense of peace.
Elara looks at me, her expression softening. "You did well today, Orin. You've shown great potential. With more training and experience, you'll become a fine adventurer."
I nod, feeling a deep sense of gratitude and determination. "Thank you, Elara. I couldn't have done it without you."
We sit in companionable silence, watching the fire crackle and the stars begin to twinkle overhead. Despite the dangers we faced, I feel a growing sense of purpose and belonging. The path ahead may be uncertain, but with Elara's guidance and my newfound skills, I'm ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
As night approaches, the forest grows quieter, with only the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant call of nocturnal creatures. The fire crackles softly, casting a warm glow over our makeshift camp. As I finish applying the healing salve to my wound once again, I notice the familiar sensation of a screen appearing in my mind's eye.

A small smile tugs at the corners of my lips. Despite the pain and confusion, I’m making progress. The titles and achievements may seem like small victories, but each one brings me closer to understanding this world and my place in it.
As night falls, Elara and I take turns keeping watch. The forest feels different in the darkness, the shadows deepening and the sounds more pronounced. During my shift, I sit by the fire, the soft crackling keeping me company. The stillness of the night provides the perfect opportunity to examine my status once again.
Reciting the word "Status" in my mind, the screen appears with a familiar flash.
