Chapter 4: First Quest

Chapter 4: First Quest

Jaff watched as his classmates vanished into their portals. He looked straight and took a step forward into the swirling abyss.

Everything went black. “Standby for synchronization.” a female voice echoed in Jaff’s head. “Link established.. Transportation initiated.”

A bright flash of light forced Jaff to close his eyes. His ears screeched as a high pitched sound was heard and then slowly faded. Jaff forced his eyes open. There was glare. His eyes slowly adjusted to the light with the structure of people and buildings coming into focus. He looked around to see his classmates in a medieval town square. There was no pavement, only dirt for the roads. The outskirts of the roads were lined with various open air market stalls. Vendors were shouting to the passing citizens in an attempt to sell their wares.

Jaffs eyes bulged open as he watched a group of exceptionally aesthetically beautiful girls with different shades of green silk clothing moving between market stalls. Their white, blond hair flowing behind them. Jaff noticed the prominent pointy ears as they faced away from him to talk to the market operator. Elves!

“Welcome to the Elven town of Rala.” Professor Madbattens voice boomed as he stood on top of a stone podium.

“The professors and the students of our school work together in keeping this region safe from both monsters and invaders. Even though you compete on Earth for a place in the Summoner Games, here you are a team. You will all start at Tier 1. Your Tier level will decide on what duties you will perform while you are in Estoria. Think of it like a quest ranking system. You will be given a minimum of two days of duties per week that you must complete from here on. This is a condition of you staying at this school. The higher your Tier level the more challenging the duties we may ask you to perform. There are two ways to increase your Tier. The first is by showing the exceptional completion of your duties and the second is by taking the Tier Exam that aligns with your Tier level. You are free to go back to Earth or roam Estoria when you are not on duty and outside of class time. We will be giving you all free time today to explore this town and its neighboring regions but you are absolutely forbidden as first year Summoners to leave the region's borders. Other regions in Estoria are controlled by the different schools and Summoner factions. Region politics exists and you must remember that your Summons are not Summons in Estoria and can die. Our school cannot guarantee your safety and you will be disciplined for disobeying if caught. These can be dangerous lands. Now go out and explore. Come back to the school inn when the sun goes down for roll call.”

Jaff turned around to a hard poke in his back to see Lexi. Her eyes were bright blue from the sun and Jaff thought she looked irritated or angry.

“What’s wrong Lexi?” Jaff curiously asked.

Lexi moved in closer and grabbed Jaff by the wrist.

“Why were you looking at those girls like that? You know what… never mind.” She said as she loosened her grip of his wrist and walked away.

Jaff was confused. What an odd thing for Lexi to do, he thought. Maybe she knows them and doesn’t like them?

“What you do to Lexi?” Ray asked as Lexi continued to walk off down past the square and onto the main road without them.

“No idea, I think. I think she doesn’t like those Elves for some reason.” Jaff responded.

Ray looked over as the Elves finished with their exchange of goods.

“Ahh, I see. Jaff you’re such an idiot you know that?”

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

“Why? What did I do?”

“That's for you and her to work out. I ain’t getting involved.” Ray concluded as he picked up his bag and staff off the ground and ran to catch up with Lexi.

“Hey, wait up!” Jaff shouted.

Jaff picked up pace to catch up and as he did he turned to notice one of the Elven girls not focused on her shopping and was watching him. What an odd girl he thought.

The group reached the edge of town where two older students stood on either side of the road in their school uniform holding long spears. One of the students, an older boy with dark hair and blonde tips let out an obnoxious sigh.

“Why do we always get the shit duties? I can’t wait until these little plebs take over.” The boy said.

Lexi piped up and veered aggressively off the road towards the boy. The boy noticed and his posture became defensive. The boy tapped the spear on the ground, an electrical current engulfed the spear with the sound of voltage being heard as the electricity dispersed around it. The boy faced the tip of the spear towards Lexi. Lexi walked and stopped inches to the tip of the spear. Jaff could see that she was angry.

“Who are you calling a pleb!” Lexi hissed as she held her ground.

“You, you stupid bitch! Know your place” The boy snapped back.

Lexi angrily grabbed the electrified spear. Jaff, Ray and the other student both looked on in shock. Lexi held it tightly, the electricity closest to where she gripped it began to fade as the area turned white from cold. The white traveled slowly down the spear as a cold mist began to form. The boy, now also in shock, took a step back and attempted to pull his spear out of her grip but failed.

“I am already level 23 and to top it off..” The ice began to spread faster towards the boy's hand as Lexi gripped harder. “I’m angry!”.

The boy let go of the spear and fell onto his bottom. The boy was too scared to speak. Lexi threw the spear to the side as it made a heavy thud and she then continued to stomp off down the road. Ray turned to Jaff.

“Whaaaat did you do to her!” Ray said in a surprised tone.

“I didn’t do anything!” Jaff said in his defense.

Ray and Jaff quickly hurried to catch up.

“Where are you going Lexi?” Jaff asked.

“I need to find Esper. Professor Gibben said she is most likely north of Rala in the fairy forest of Merryland” Lexi responded.

“Wait, Merryland is another region. You heard Professor Madbatten… Crossing regions is forbidden for first year Summoners..” Ray said in concern.

“I don’t care what he said. This morning my parents said that they lost contact with the fairies and that Esper and all of the fairies in the forest could be in trouble. I need to know she is safe.” Lexi said.

“Didn’t you just summon Esper back at school? Doesn’t that mean she is okay?” Jaff asked.

“No, I was able to summon her but she said that it was dark and she didn’t know where she was in Estoria.” Lexi responded.

Lexi turned around to face Ray and Jaff.

“Look, you two don’t need to follow me. I’ll figure it out. You don’t have to get in trouble because of me.” Lexi said.

Jaff walked up to Lexi.

“Lexi.. you know I can’t do that. I told you that I am here for you, always. I’m coming whether you want me to or not.” Jaff calmly said.

“And I’m with stupid…” Ray mocked as he pointed to Jaff.

“Thanks guys!” Lexi said with tears in her eyes.

Jaff smiled and let out an excited yell. Ray and Lexi turned to look at him shaken by his surprise outburst.

“Yess! Guys, this is our first quest in Estoria!. Let's go save Esper!”
