Chapter 3: This Is It!

“Everyone stand up.” Professor Madbatten requested.

The entire cohort stood from their seats.

“I will now teach all of you how to use your Shard Bracelets. Please put them on your wrists. But remember, this is your first time. Some of you may feel discomfort or an overwhelming power.” He continued.

Jaff looked at Lexi and Ray.

“Who first?” Jaff said.

“I’ll go.” Ray responded.

Ray gently slipped the bracelet over his wrist. The bracelet magically tightened. Then.. nothing.

“Well that was anticlimactic.” Lexi joked as she prepared to put her bracelet on.

“I’ll go next then I guess.” She continued.

“Wait… Something is happening” Ray uncomfortably said.

Ray’s eyes widened as they filled with a bright yellow glow. Ray let go of his spear. Jaff caught the spear and as he did a warm bright yellow aura appeared to surround Ray from the ground up, completely engulfing him. Jaff looked around the room to see other students surrounded in a similar aura. Jaff and Lexi took a step back as Ray, overwhelmed, dropped to one knee. The aura around his body and in his eyes changed from the bright glow to a pale transparent silver. Ray stood back up. A tear rolling down his face. He looked at Jaff and Lexi.

“This is the legacy my parents left me.” He said as more tears rolled down his face.

Ray told Jaff that his parents passed away in Estoria while he was young and being nursed by a nanny back on Earth.

“This is amazing!” Ray continued as he looked at his hands as the silver aura followed them. His long black hair levitated to an upright position.

Jaff began to get excited, he wondered what would happen to Lexi and then himself. But Jaff, although hopeful, was realistic. He was starting from the beginning. Nothing to inherit.

Lexi slipped her Shard Bracelet over her wrist, which tightened. The silver aura around Ray slowly subsided and his hair began to fall as Jaff handed his spear back.

While they waited, Jaff noticed Drake’s red aura slowly subsiding as he was surrounded by his friends. Or as Jaff thought, his lackey thugs.

Jaff was suddenly blinded by the yellow glow that surrounded Lexi. Lexi put her arm onto Jaff’s shoulder for support. The glow didn’t hurt Jaff. It was warm, inviting and gave off a slight pressure like someone blowing on your skin or the gentle wind at the beach. The glow turned a cool blue color. Lexi’s fingers dug into Jaffs shoulders forcing him downward until he slipped away in pain from her grasp.

“Wow Ray, you're right. This is amazing.” Lexi said as the aura fainted away.

Both Lexi and Ray turned to Jaff.

“Your turn Jaff.” Ray said.

Jaff looked down at the Shard Bracelet. He hesitated.

“What’s wrong?” Lexi questioned.

“I’ve been wanting this ever since I saw the first World Summoner Tournament on the TV as a kid. It’s… It’s finally my time! Guys…” Jaff said as he looked up with a tear in his eye.

“We are now official Summoners!” Jaff continued as he slipped the bracelet over his wrist.

The bracelet tightened. Jaff waited. And waited. Lexi and Ray looked on in curiosity. And nothing…

“Sorry guys, I kind of knew that this would happen.” Jaff said in a disappointed tone.

Jaff turned to hear Drake and his group watching him and laughing. Drake cupped his hands around his mouth.

“Plainy!” Drake shouted from across the room as his lackey thugs continued to laugh.

Drake looked at Professor Gibben who was now standing in the crowd of students. Gibbon looked straight back at him. Drake immediately turned to his friends in an effort to not get in trouble.

“Idiot.” Jaff muttered.

“He’s such an asshole.” Lexi piped.

“You're the one who dated him.” Ray responded sarcastically.

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

“Yeah, that was a mistake…” Lexi said in an embarrassing tone.

“Settle down everyone. Settle down!” Professor Madbatten commanded through the microphone.

The students slowly quietened down and went on to face Madbatten.

“Now to learn how to access your inherited Summons, skills and status points. Raise your Shard Bracelets in front of you and down on the purple shard in its center.”

Jaff raised his wrist just below eye level and pressed down on the purple shard. The shard slightly depressed like a button and began to glow. Above it appeared a slightly gray transparent screen:

Typical… Jaff thought. Jaff hoped for better stats but was also realistic. What's this though? A skill?

Jaff pressed on the skills panel, which opened up his skills list. Hmm.. Jaff pondered. The skill is called Thought Lull. Let’s see if I can see more detail on it:

Freeze’s others fully for 10 seconds but freeze’s Jaff as well. Jaff wasn’t sure of the enemies he would be encountering so was unable to tell if this was a good skill.

Jaff turned as he felt a soft bump against his arm. A female fairy with blonde hair, bright blue eyes and wearing blue leather armor about the size of Jaff’s forearm was hovering next to him. The fairy was holding a thin golden staff the size of its body with a glowing golden star at the top end of it. The fairy’s wings were transparent with gold veins. The fairy turned to look at Jaff.

“Sorry about that.” The fairy said.

Shocked, Jaff took a step back.

“I have a Summon!” Lexi excitedly said.

Lexi caught the fairy mid flight and squeezed her in her arms.

“Ohh, you're so cute!” Lexi affectionately said as she squeezed harder.

“I’m… I can’t breathe!” The fairy responded.

The fairy’s star on the wand brightly glowed. The air went cold as snow flakes flowed out of the star and around Lexi, Jaff and Ray. Lexi’s arms closest to the fairy slowly turned to ice. Jaff felt pain up and down his body and looked down to see frozen patches of ice begin to grow on his body. The fairy used the ice to slip out of Lexi’s grasp.

“What’s happening!” Lexi uneasily said.

“I am Esper. A frost fairy. Just because I am your Summon doesn’t mean you get the right to touch me. A contract goes both ways and I am only here because your mum wanted me here to protect you. But to be honest, you need to show me you're worth protecting!” Esper said in a higher than usual pitched female voice as she hovered and pointed her finger at Lexi in a condescending manner.

“You can talk?” Jaff curiously asked.

Esper turned to Jaff and rolled her eyes and sighed.

“Duh… A Summon can be any inhabitant of Estoria. There are all kinds of races and creatures that live there. How do you not already know this?” Esper said.

“I kinda did… You're just the second Summon ive ever seen face to face. How long can you actually stay in this world?” Jaff asked.

“Until Lexi sends me back or I decide I want to go home. Or… I am “incapacitated” as your people like to call it...” Esper replied.

“I see. I can’t wait to get to Estoria to find my own Summon!” Jaff said excitedly.

Jaff turned to Ray who he could see was still in his Shard Menu. Jaff noticed that Ray was getting frantic as he made hand gestures to switch through the menu.

“No, no, no… This can’t be. Where are you…” Ray said frantically.

“Where is what?” Jaff questioned.

“My family Summon… Gia the Great Wolf… He’s not here!” Ray panicked.

“Isn’t that the ultra fast wolf Summon you said your parents had? Oh wow, you have some nice stats there!” Lexi said as she looked over Ray’s shoulder at his Shard Menu.

Ray abruptly moved to the side to prevent Lexi from looking.

“Hey, it’s rude to do that! What if we ever had to fight each other in the Summoner Games? And yes… that’s my family Summon. He’s been part of the family for generations. He also acted as a mount. But he’s not here…”. Ray responded in a disheartened voice.

Jaff grabbed onto Ray's wrist. Ray’s Shard Menu turned off as Ray looked up at Jaff. Jaff looked at him with a face full of hope and a gleam in his eye.

“Don’t give up. I’m sure we will find Gia together!” Jaff said as Ray’s eyes swelled with tears.

“Silence!” Professor Madbatten suddenly shouted through the microphone.

The three of them and Esper turned to face Madbatten. Jaff noticed all of the other Summons. A black snake as big as Algoria with thick prominent scales. A male elf in green armor with leaf patterns inscribed through it. The elf was holding a plain brown bow. And a mysterious person in a dark hooded jacket with a dark purple aura twirling around the person's body from the feet to the head. Incredible he thought.

“Now we will all be traveling to Estoria. Remember that you will not be able to return to Earth until the 24 cooldown has completed. Hold out your Shard Bracelets like this.” Professor Madbatten instructed as he held out his wrist.

“Now press and hold the purple shard. Your Shard Menu will appear and ask if you wish to transverse worlds. Say Yes… A purple teleport will appear in front of you in which you have approximately five minutes to enter. But be aware… Your Summons will not be with you. You must locate them again in Estoria… Also be aware. A Summon in Estoria are like us on Earth. They are mortal. There is no resurrection if they die in Estoria… Now, hold down your purple shard.”

Jaff pushed down his purple shard until his Shard Menu appeared with the words “Transverse Worlds?” He looked up to see purple circles with a black center, the size of a human forming in front of the professors and classmates.

“Yes!” Jaff loudly shouted as other students oddly looked at him.

The purple portal opened. Jaff shook with excitement. A grin from ear to ear formed. This is it he thought.

“This is where my adventure begins!” he said to himself as he stepped through the Shard Portal.
