Genesis

Another slow day at Cole’s goes by even slower when Kai’s English teacher is absent, the substitute teacher is an older man with back issues that teaches math. Normally he’d be taking a nap by now without fear of getting bad grades since he is the smartest in his class. His nap would have to wait as his personal space is being trodden upon by the new girl and the student council president. Anabelle’s pink hair fails to pair with the uniform's blue tie so she decided to get a pink one for herself. Masha might as well get a pink tie with her face looking like that.

“What are you guys doing here, don’t you have work to do?”, Kai says as he leans back in his chair-throwing and catching his pencil.

“Well, she is the president. And as her vice president I am obliged to accompany her wherever she goes”, Annabelle sits on Kai's desk pulling out a handful of lollipops.

“Really? Did you choose her for your vice president? I feel so betrayed”

“W-well the elections are coming up and she offered so I thought-”, Masha hides her face as she twirls her hair, which is now let down.

“Alright. So why is it you’re in my class? Come to invite me to the council as well?”

“As if”, Anabelle shoves a lollipop in Kai's mouth “We just want you to write a speech for our campaign”

“Yeah? Why should I do that for you?”, Kai gives the lollipop back to Anabelle

“Well, not for me” Anabelle shoves the same lollipop into Masha’s mouth “But for her”

“Hey! Why’d you do that? That’s-”, Masha has no reaction and continues to indulge in the lollipop. Kai drops back into his chair folding his arms.

“Well, I guess I can help. On one condition”

The bell rings for lunch as the three set out to gather information for Masha’s campaign. The aroma of all the luxury dishes flowing through the air as they pass the cafeteria doors. Anabelle’s head fixated on a poster on the right side of the doors. The predestined poster featured no wrinkles or creases and the picture of a girl with black and white hair almost like a piano. The poster reads ‘Vote Michelle Maker For Student council president. Kickstart your future’. Masha becomes saddened by the sight of her opponent. Perhaps she feels inferior, or they had a bad past. Kai realizes now that he knows nothing about his so-called friends. They continue into the cafeteria as LLida and Roman pass them on the way out.

“Kid’s got two girls following him around”, Roman makes a snide remark.

“Yeah, as long as he doesn't make a move on Rosa we won’t have any problems. That goes for you too”, the two chuckle at each other.

“Hahaha”

“Hahaha”

“What the hell do you want from me Roman Mathews?”, Llida pushes Roman to the wall by his neck.

“How about we calm down. I wouldn’t want to have to kill you today”, Llida knows Roman is serious. Letting him down.

“Talk. I’ll give you a minute of my time”

“Perfect. Let me just get to the point then. Why did you kill your mother Llida?”

Llida’s body burns from Roman’s words. A nervous laugh could be heard.

“What?”, a smile forms on his face. Though he doesn’t seem happy.

“Your mother. She was dead before that angel flew off with her. Why’d you do it?”

Llida turns his back to Roman. His face was paralyzed with his stunning emotion. Fumbling towards the main door as he holds his stomach.

“Llida! Stop right now or I’ll shoot goddammit!”, Roman points two pistols at Llida. He mumbles to himself.

“I’ll kill him. I’ll kill him. I’ll kill him”, he repeats those words as he walks through the door tripping over himself. Roman following right after.

In the library with Masha and Anabelle, Kai indulges in a cup of vanilla ice cream, a great contrast to the otherwise colorful library that feels more like a kid's playroom than anything else. They take up 3 tables filling them with books, Masha sporting new reading glasses and a ponytail fulfilling her side of the promise. Kai had written an A grade speech in less than an hour and spent the rest of the day scavenging for books about the archangels. The books were ancient and dusty, untouched for decades. Yet they hold so much power. Kai had asked the two to help him search for any information on Saraqael the archangel and make notes. They should also write down any useful information about any of the other archangels.

“Kai do you know what a scale is?” Masha asks, holding up a green book to Kai’s face.

“ Yeah, according to Roman there are only things that can kill angels. If we don’t use those the angels are just gonna keep coming back”

“Well turns out. Saraqael has a Scale as well. Here in Astura.”
