Chapter 9 (Delilah)

Chapter 9 (Delilah)

Delilah’s world was pain, she had no idea how long she had been lying on the ground but she knew it was death to stay. Yet, her world was pain and she did not know if she had the strength to move. Her head felt light and groggy and she felt a sticky liquid covering her body. Everything ached but the line of dull fire running through her underside was insistent and unignorable. To top everything else off there was a monotonous red flashing in the corner of her vision which was causing her headache to worsen. With a thought and the intention just to stop the flashing Delilah focused on the flashing icon in the corner of her vision.

Warning! You are bleeding. 2 hp loss per minute for the duration of the bleed. Time remaining until bleed becomes 1 hp loss per minute: 7:48 minutes

In a panic Delilah opened up her status page and looked at her health points.

Eight health points remaining. Delilah blankly stared at her status, pain clouding her thoughts as her health ticked down to seven. Shit. She was going to die, she was going to die. Frantically Delilah thought of what to do. She could try to stem the bleeding? But with what and looking down at her paws in horror she realized that even if she had bandages then it wasn’t as if she could apply them. seven health left. Think Delilah think. So she wasn’t human and couldn’t stem the bleeding through normal means but she didn’t need to she wasn’t on earth anymore. six health remaining. She had prompts; she had leveled up maybe some more achievements. But at most she could gain a handful of stat points from achievements and that was from by the sounds of it very rare and unlikely achievements at that. But wait she looked at her status, 36 free attributes if she pumped them into constitution. Five health points remaining. Without a second thought she pushed all her remaining attributes into constitution and promptly blacked out.

Delilah’s everything hurt. It felt as if her whole body had been stretched out before being compressed into a ball and beaten with sticks. Everything ached and throbbed. Groggily she tried to figure out what was happening. She was… she was bleeding out! With a start that sent a fresh jolt of pain through her body she checked her health and her bleed time. 15/405 health points and 60 seconds left of the bleed time. With bated breath she watched the seconds tick by until a new prompt filled her vision.

Warning! You are bleeding. 1 hp loss per minute for the duration of the bleed. Time remaining until bleed becomes ends: 29:58 minutes

With dread in her heart Delilah looked at her health pool. Fourteen health points remaining? Her pain addled mind could not comprehend why she had only lost one health point instead of two. Delilah numbly watched as the time ticked by, she was so tired. No, she would not give up yet. With an eye on the countdown she forced her sluggish thought into order maybe her prompts?

Delilah came back to herself with a jolt. How long had she been asleep?

Warning! You are bleeding. 1 hp loss per minute for the duration of the bleed. Time remaining until bleed becomes ends: 13:43 minutes

Sixteen minutes had past, sixteen minutes? But she only had fourteen health points when the timer started, how was she alive? By this point she was almost too numb to care, everything was so hard but regardless she opened her status one last time to see her health pool. Eight health left. She did not know how or why or even if it was true but somehow she wasn’t going to die. With that thought tipping her over the edge she gladly allowed the sweet release of sleep to take her.

Delilah groggily opened her eyes, a dull pain in her belly disturbing her slumber, however more keen than the ache was an acute sense of wrongness. Despite her deep seeded desire to simply close her eyes and fall back asleep she forced herself to blink and look around at her surroundings. She was currently lying in what looked like a grassy ditch, above her was a beautiful scene of an orange and red sky indicating the arrival of the sun. Delilah stared up uncomprehending for a minute before she was struck by why she felt a subtle yet pervasive wrongness. She was a rabbit, a prey animal and the sun was already peaking over the horizon meaning that she should have been in her burrow overnight to avoid owls and foxes and such and she should also be heading to her burrow now as soon predators such as the eagle will start to appear and she was in no state to survive another encounter with such a being. It was a miracle that she had even survived the night and she knew that she would not survive the day if she allowed herself to fall back asleep, so she forced herself to her feet and slowly made her way to a burrow each movement feeling like a dagger was ripping apart her insides.

After she finally made her way a couple feat into one of the side burrows she allowed herself to collapse. She ignored the prompts flashing in the corner of her vision and simply allowed her consciousness to fade once more.

Delilah once again groggily opened her eyes, this time the pain in her belly was more of a dull ache rather than a persistent throbbing. Looking down at herself she was startled by her new body’s recovery speed. She knew full well that the eagle had dealt a deep gash to her stomach, looking back she realised that such a wound should have probably been fatal. However when she looked down at where the wound should have been all she could see was a slightly raised patch of fur not a gaping probably festering wound. Now she was no expert on rabbits but she thought that if rabbits could heal from deep flesh wounds in a matter of hours then she would have heard about it by now so the question remained that was this miraculous healing the same for everything in this new world or was it unique to her for some reason. The former would be miraculous as no doubt diseases would fall under this effect as well meaning life expectancy would be through the roof here however something in her gut told her that this was too good to be true and what was more likely the case was that it was her now ridiculous constitution maybe combined with her godseed or one of her abilities? Again there were too many questions and far too few answers.

Now that Delilah was awake she decided to deal with the flashing prompts at the corner of her vision. One of the few things that she had managed to find out about this new world was that if a prompt such as an achievement granted some sort of boost such as additional stat points then she would only receive the benefits after she had opened and parsed the prompt. Which meant that if she decided to run off in the world without checking what was new then she could end up dying due to lacking the additional power which she could have had if she simply sat down to consolidate her gains. With an inward grown she realised that it also meant she might not have had to drop all of her free stat points into constitution after the eagle attack as one of the prompts in her vision may have given her what she needed. Shaking her head and dismissing what could have been Delilah delved into her prompts.

Congratulations! You have achieved 3 new achievements!

Underpowered 1: Congratulations, you have killed a creature over five levels higher than you, for this minor achievement you gain: +5% damage to creatures of a higher level than yourself, -5% damage taken from creatures higher level than yourself.

Predator 1: Congratulations, vampire, ghoul, demon or devil hunter. You are one of the few who have delved into the path of slaying your natural predators and have also lived to tell the tail. For this mighty achievement you gain: +10% damage to natural predators, -10% damage taken from your natural predators.

Acro warrior: Congratulations, you killed a being of the same level or higher with a single blow whilst performing an acrobatic feat. Effect you gain the scarce skill martial acrobatics, +10% damage whilst airborne, +2 dexterity

Underpowered 1 made sense to Delilah, the eagle was over level five and although it made her slightly queasy to think about she had in a way killed it. Likewise with acro warrior despite the event being a blur in her mind she accepted that if intentional the feat of one shotting something whilst doing acrobatics would be incredibly difficult hence the strong rewards. However the wording of the predator 1 achievement brought up a few questions on the efficacy of the system running Etherella. By the wording of the prompt it sounded as if the achievement was meant for humans meaning either the system or whoever ran the system did not care about animals reading inaccurate prompts or that animals were not meant to have access to achievements. If the latter was the case then she may just stand a chance in this new world despite her rabbit form. Delilah put that thought on the back burner and decided to finish working her way through her prompts.

Congratulations! You have been offered 2 new quests!

Underpowered 2:

Rarity: uncommon

Requirements: slay a being ten or more levels above your own level.

Failure conditions: N/A

Rewards: The underpowered 2 achievement and access to later stages of the underpowered questline.

Predator 2:

Rarity: unusual

Requirements: slay ten creatures that are natural predators to your species

Failure conditions: N/A

Rewards: the predator 2 achievement and access to later stages of the predator questline.

Both quests looked promising to Delilah as the achievements they came with were already powerful hence gaining the upgraded form of each was definitely something worth considering. However it did raise once again raise the question about how she would gain enough experience to ascend to godhood. Now that she had tasted death and delivered it unto another did she really want to make such experiences her life? She had gained four levels from the encounter however she strongly suspected that those levels would possibly be the easiest levels she would ever gain meaning she had a choice in front of her. A choice which she one hundred percent intended to procrastinate making.

Congratulations! As you have surpassed level zero you have unlocked the skills aspect of your status screen. Your first skills will be generated based on your actions up to this point. You have 5 new skills!

Hop lv4 (uncommon): You have learned how to hop with skill and style. Why you would wish to hop rather than walk is anyone’s guess however what you choose to do with your body is your choice. Effect: +4% leg power, and -4% hop stamina cost

Munch lv6 (unusual): Due to your ability beastborn ERROR. Due to your class Rabbit you are able to gain experience points through eating. Due to gaining experience this way frequently you have gained the ability to extract extra experience through consumption. Effect: 6% more experience through consumption, ability to gain additional experience dependent on the variable of food.

Natural senses lv3 (unusual): You are in tune with the natural world and understand your place within it as such you are able to sense information about the world that is not readily available to most. Effect: efficacy of perception +3%, ability to understand the natural world +3%

Kick lv3 (common): Congratulations, you have figured out one of the many ways you can make your body into a living weapon. Effect: +1.5% damage when using your foot as a weapon, +1.5% leg power, -1.5% stamina cost of kicks

Martial acrobatics lv2 (scarce): due to a great feat of martial acrobatics you have unlocked this rarely seen scarce skill. Used correctly martial acrobatics can vastly increase the combat proficiency of the skilled. Effect: +4% damage from attacks involving acrobatics, +4% ease of performing acrobatics and -2% stamina cost of performing acrobatics.

Again it felt as if Delilah was netting bonuses everywhere but with no scale of reference she really had no idea how much these bonuses meant, for all she knew the achievements and skills she gathered were decidedly mediocre meaning with her current body she would be no match for this world. On the other hand she could end up being vastly overpowered due to sheer luck and her time here would be a breeze. She doubted this option if only for Garoth implying that it was very difficult to become a god despite all the advantages she was given. Inwardly sighing and really, really wishing that there was someone to talk to, she delved into her final two prompts.

Congratulations! You have slain a level 9 bald eagle! As this enemy was over five levels higher than you bonus experience is awarded! As this enemy was a natural predator of your species bonus experience is granted! As this is the first bald eagle you have slain bonus experience is granted! Calculating… you have received 21,248xp

Wow, she knew that killing the eagle had brought her up to level four but hadn’t quite realised how much experience she had netted herself. Previously she had received a little over sixty experience from eating grass over the span of a couple days but now… one act of violence had netted her what would have been weeks if not months of work. No, she couldn’t start thinking like that. This was a living breathing creature and while it may not be conscious that didn’t mean that it deserved to be thought of as a quick tool for experience. She knew that her moral standpoint would likely degrade in this new world but she would be damned if she’d drop all morals for an easy fix. Shaking her head which sent a fresh twinge through her aching body she opened her final prompt.

Congratulations! Due to reaching level four you have 2 new class related perks!

Calculating… based on recent actions you have gained the perk thick hide!

Thick hide: Due to receiving what was initially a fatal wound and somehow surviving your body has toughened its skin. Effect: you receive 10% less damage from piercing or stabbing attacks and are slightly less effected by temperature change.

Calculating… Due to constitution being your highest stat by a considerable amount you have gained the perk Dense frame!

Dense frame: your body compacts becoming more sturdy and harder to influence. Effect: -5% size, +10% weight, -10% knockback chance, -5% bludgeoning damage, the efficacy of constitution is increased by an extremely small amount.

The next few minutes were strange to say the least. While not exactly painful the experience of having every part of your body shift and shrink whilst feeling your skin tighten was not one that she wished to repeat After the sensation finally left her she considered her gains from the encounter with the eagle. The addition of the new achievements were of course welcome as well as the quests. The additions of skills looked promising. While their bonuses looked small currently, she was sure that over time they would quickly add up and add significantly to her survivability. She had conflicting emotions about her new perks. By the sounds of things, the perks that she gained were dependent on other aspects of her being meaning in theory if she picked a direction of growth then her perks should synergise. However, while survivability was her number one priority now and thick hide and Dense frame were boons in that regard, she was not convinced that this was the best direction for her growth long term. One thing that she had noticed while looking at her status screen was despite having over double the stat points in constitution compared to intelligence she still had a higher mana pool than health pool which meant that trying to invest heavily in constitution may give less results compared to intelligence? Regardless she shelved that thought for later, she was tired of looking through prompts and parsing their connotations now was the time to act.
